Rami Malek Is Freddie Mercury In First Look Pic From Bryan Singer’s BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY

“Any way the wind blows”

Rami Malek is rock icon Freddie Mercury in this first look photo from the upcoming Twentieth Century Fox/New Regency film BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY.

Tuesday, September 5, which would have been the singer’s 71st birthday. He died at the age of 45 in November 1991.

The Bryan Singer-helmed film chronicles Queen from 1970, when Mercury teamed with Brian May and Roger Taylor, until the band’s performance at Live Aid in 1985, six years before the singer died of complications from AIDS.

Their 1975 single, “Bohemian Rhapsody“, was number 1 for nine weeks (and a further five weeks in 1991) and is the third biggest selling single of all time in the UK. The band’s 1981 Greatest Hits album is the biggest selling album in UK history with 6.0 million copies sold by 2014. The band’s 1991 compilation Greatest Hits II is also one of the UK’s top ten biggest sellers of all time, with 3.8 million copies sold by 2012.

It returned to the chart at number two in 1992 following Freddie Mercury’s death in 1991, as well as its appearance in the film WAYNE’S WORLD, which revived its American popularity.

BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY is scheduled to be released in theaters on December 25, 2018.

CITIZEN JANE FILM FESTIVAL Will Run in Columbia, Missouri October 26th – 29th

A FILM FESTIVAL THAT CHANGES THE INDUSTRY FOR WOMEN FILMMAKERS – Citizen Jane Unspools Films From Female Directors

Showcasing the work of female film directors, the Citizen Jane Film Festival will run in Columbia, Mo., from Thursday, Oct. 26, through Sunday, Oct. 29, 2017. The Citizen Jane Film Festival’s schedule and other information can be found HERE
https://citizenjanefilmfestival.org/

Now in its 10th year, Citizen Jane FF has been voted one of “50 film festivals worth the entry fee” by MovieMaker magazine in 2016 and 2017.  In 2015, MovieMaker magazine named the Citizen Jane FF one of “25 coolest film festivals in the world.”

Citizen Jane will screen 19 features and documentaries and 8 programs of shorts, including animation, in various venues in Columbia.  The fest also will offer free workshops and networking sessions.

American and international filmmakers will serve as seminar panelists and conduct Q&A sessions following their screenings.  This year’s participants include feature film directors from Australia, the Bahamas, Denmark, and the U.S. cities of Seattle, San Antonio, San Francisco, and Englewood, Colo.

WINTER’S BONE, which was filmed in Missouri and marked the breakout performance of Academy Award winning actress Jennifer Lawrence, screened at Citizen Jane FF.  Other past films included work from filmmakers who’ve gone on to notable careers:  Golden Globe winner and multiple Emmy nominee Lena Dunham (TV series GIRLS), two-time Emmy nominee Christine Vachon (CAROL, BOYS DON’T CRY), five-time film festival award winner Yvonne Welbon (LIVING WITH PRIDE: RUTH C. ELLIS), and multiple film festival award winner and nominee Leah Meyerhoff (I BELIEVE IN UNICORNS).

The non-competitive festival is sponsored and coordinated by Stephens College, an historically women’s college with a strong film program.  Why hold a women’s film festival?  This information about lack of female film directors appeared in the trade paper Variety in January 2017:

Despite all the editorials and the speeches and the handwringing, things aren’t getting better for women in Hollywood. They’re getting worse. Women comprised just 7 percent of all directors working on the 250 highest-grossing domestic releases in 2016, a decline of 2 percentage points from the level achieved in 2015 and in 1998, according to a new report from the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film at San Diego State University. The results come after two years of debate about the lack of opportunities for women and minorities to rise up through the studio system. It’s a conversation that has drawn the likes of Jennifer Lawrence, Natalie Portman, Elizabeth Banks, Jessica Chastain, and other stars, all of whom have publicly decried the lack of pay equity for women and the dearth of female filmmakers.

Women Make Movies, FestAgent, and Hollywomen Diversity Directory all list the Citizen Jane FF as an important filmmaking resource for female directors.

Lucio Fulci’s DON’T TORTURE A DUCKLING Coming on Blu-ray September 12th from Arrow Video

Lucio Fulci’s DON’T TORTURE A DUCKLING (1972) will be available on Blu-ray September 12th from Arrow Video

From Lucio Fulci, the godfather of gore (The Psychic, The Beyond), comes one of the most powerful and unsettling giallo thrillers ever produced: his 1972 masterpiece Don’t Torture a Duckling.

When the sleepy rural village of Accendura is rocked by a series of murders of young boys, the superstitious locals are quick to apportion blame, with the suspects including the local “witch”, Maciara (Florinda Bolkan, A Lizard in a Woman’s Skin). With the bodies piling up and the community gripped by panic and a thirst for bloody vengeance, two outsiders – city journalist Andrea (Tomas Milian, The Four of the Apocalypse) and spoilt rich girl Patrizia (Barbara Bouchet, The Red Queen Kills Seven Times) – team up to crack the case. But before the mystery is solved, more blood will have been spilled, and not all of it belonging to innocents…

Deemed shocking at the time for its brutal violence, depiction of the Catholic Church and themes of child murder and paedophilia, Don’t Torture a Duckling is widely regarded today as Fulci’s greatest film, rivalling the best of his close rival Dario Argento. Arrow Video is proud to present this uniquely chilling film in its UK high definition debut.

OFFICIAL RULES:

1. YOU MUST BE IN THE ST. LOUIS AREA THE EVENING OF THE PLAY.

Audiences will be treated to inebriated reenactments as a cast of five actors will attempt to bring to life Romeo & Juliet, all whilst becoming increasingly intoxicated. Better than any high school English class, guests can expect an evening affair with a copious amount of booze, and an entire work of Shakespeare, all in an hour.  Raved St. Louis theater critic Kevin Brackett from ReviewSTL.com, “You are about to have your world rocked! ‘Shotspeare’ is hilarious! If you are looking for a truly unique piece of theatre, look no further.”

This highly interactive show encourages audience members to join the fun throughout the performance. Upon entering the theatre, select guests are given “Shotspeare Cards” and are instructed to use them at any given time when they want to see the actors drink. One lucky audience member even gets to join the cast for the duration of the production, becoming one of the Shakespearen characters and partaking in the always challenging and entertaining, “Wheel of Soliloquy.”

“SHOTSPEARE is basically a Drunk History of all those plays you never quite understood,” said Matt Morgan, show co-creator and actual graduate from the Ringling Brothers School of Clowning. “Our show is equal parts bacchanal and classical theater, harkening back to the actual time of Shakespeare where audience members (groundlings) were boisterous and part of the show.”

The Playhouse @ Westport Plaza is located at 635 Westport Plaza in Maryland Heights, Missouri and is a venue filling a niche for a variety of Broadway and Off-Broadway entertainment that would otherwise not find its way to the St. Louis area. Programming at the venue is offered at affordable ticket pricing so that anyone can have dinner at one of the many restaurants in the area as well as see a great show. For additional information on upcoming events, please visit www.playhouseatwestport.com. Princess-Mononoke-princess-mononoke-17269831-576-324
Hayao Miyazaki’s PRINCESS MONONOKE (1997) is  reportedly a delightful anime from the man who has come to define everything that is best about the genre, I’ve never seen it, but Miyazaki always brings in the crowds for the midnight shows so I’m sure it’s a worthy choice. PRINCESS MONONOKE was Miyazaki’s calling card to the world outside Japan. The English voice cast boasts Billy Crudup, Billy Bob Thornton, Minnie Driver, Claire Danes, Jada Pinkett Smith, Gillan Anderson and Keith David – a considerable volume of talent for an animation back in 1997 (TOY STORY was 1995), arguably marking the beginning of another trend – for big names to be heard and not seen. Essentially a statement on the ecological devastation brought on by human advancement, the story follows the battle between Princess Mononoke and a mining village.
