The casting of DeHaan as Harry Osborn was confirmed this morning in a tweet by Webb (@MarcW) who wrote “Meet Harry Osborn. So excited to have him on board. @danedehaan.” The new film in the Spider-Man saga is set for release in 3D on May 2, 2014. Production will begin in early 2013. Webb, Garfield and Stone previously teamed on this summer’s blockbuster THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, which has taken in more than $751 million worldwide.

DeHaan caught moviegoers’ attention with his performances in four 2012 releases: Steven Spielberg’s LINCOLN, opposite Daniel Day-Lewis and Lukas Haas; John Hillcoat’s LAWLESS, alongside Shia LaBeouf, Tom Hardy, and Jason Clarke; Bradley Rust Gray’s JACK & DIANE, with Juno Temple and Riley Keough; and one of the year’s biggest sleeper hits, the adventure thriller CHRONICLE, directed by Josh Trank. He began his film career with director John Sayles and actor Chris Cooper in AMIGO.

DeHaan next stars in PLACE BEYOND THE PINES alongside Bradley Cooper and Ryan Gosling. In addition he will star in Atom Egoyan’s DEVIL’S KNOT, with Reese Witherspoon and Colin Firth, about the fate of the West Memphis Three; and John Krokidas’ KILL YOUR DARLINGS, with Jack Huston, Daniel Radcliffe, Ben Foster, and Kyra Sedgwick, set in 1944 amidst the Beat Generation.

Mr. DeHaan first came to industry attention with his portrayal of Jesse in the third season of the critically applauded drama series In Treatment, starring alongside Gabriel Byrne. This was followed by a guest arc in the fourth season of the popular horror series True Blood.

In 2010, he received an Obie Award for his performance in Annie Baker’s The Aliens, directed by Sam Gold. The Rattlestick Theater production was cited as “Play of the Year” by The New York Times. Mr. DeHaan made his Broadway debut in with American Buffalo, Robert Falls’ 2008 staging of the classic David Mamet play.

PROMETHEUS – The Blu Review

By Joe Vanourney

When I saw Ridley Scott’s “Prometheus” in the theater this past summer, I left somewhat disappointed.  This was one on my most anticipated films of 2012.  I was hyped for it for over a year—even before I saw Damon Lindelof and Charlize Theron take the stage with the first images in July 2011 at San Diego Comic-Con.  The film was shrouded in secrecy. Is it or is it not an “Alien” prequel?  Other than that initial Comic-Con exposure, I tried to avoid any articles or news about it.  I went in pretty blind.

Don’t get me wrong.  On that initial viewing, there were many things I liked about it. The production design was A+.  The score was impressive.  The use of 3D was among the best in the modern era. The visual effects were fantastic and I LOVED that they were shooting on practical sets and not in front of green screens. But something left me….cold.  The characters felt underdeveloped.  There was an emotional detachment to the characters and some of their actions made no sense based on what they had done in previous scenes.  I didn’t understand why Guy Pearce was cast as an old man (with horrible old man makeup).  And I was slightly confused with the plot.

But as I left, slightly disappointed, I withheld judgment.  I knew that there was a great chance that after some time had passed, and my brain had time to process, I may look back on “Prometheus,” like “2001:A Space Odyssey” before it, as a film with a lot to say, and that there was a great possibility that the film would stand the test of time as a science fiction epic, and quite possibly, a masterpiece.  The film addresses the issues of creation and evolution in a very heady-philosophical way.

And now, with the release of “Prometheus” as a 4-Disc Collector’s Set (which I have dubbed Prometheus For Dummies: Extended Edition), I am happy to report that I may have been exactly right with my suspicions.  The film does make more sense on a second viewing.  And with over 7 hours of bonus features, this set stands out as one of the best Blu-Ray releases of the year, as sets the bar high for how films should be released on home video.

Video: This film looks stunning. There is really no other word to describe it. There are no compression issues or encode errors in this top-notch transfer.  The film was shot with Red Epic digital cameras using high quality Zeiss lenses mounted to 3ality Technica Atom 3D rigs, and director Scott and cinematographer Dariusz Wolski shot on magnificently-detailed sets at Pinewood Studios’ massive 007 stage, allowing them complete control over lighting and camera issues. Their attention to detail shows in the crisp, highly-detailed images. This was Scott’s first foray into 3D filmmaking, and he says he can’t imagine shooting any other way now.  The first disc in the set contains the 3D Blu-Ray transfer and the second disc contains the 2D Blu-Ray.  The third disc is bonus features and the fourth contains the film in standard DVD format and digital copy.

Audio:  Again, top-of-the-line. The DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 surround track is spectacular. This film has fantastic sound design. From the beginning of the film with the crashing waterfall and thunderous rumbling of the spaceship above it, to the great sound mix on the Prometheus ship, with its airlocks and engine hums and wailing sirens, to the dripping rain and cavernous echoes on LV-223, this is a full-immersion sound experience.

Bonus Features:  This is the meat of the collection. I wish all new release Blu-Rays were this massive in their bonus features. And in the case of  “Prometheus,” the bonus features truly enhance the film and elevate it to something greater than the film that was released in theaters.  The bonus features help make “Prometheus” a better movie.

Let’s start with the audio commentary tracks. There are two.  The first features Ridley Scott and is decent.  He tells stories of the production, talks about shooting in 3D, and explains why he decided to make another science fiction film after 30 years and another “Alien” film at that.

The second audio commentary track is even better.  It features writers John Spaihts and Damon Lindelof. This is one of the best audio commentary tracks I have ever heard.  Period. Spaihts was originally hired to write a direct prequel to “Alien” and talks about how in this scene they were originally going to find the eggs, and in this scene we see the facehugger, and in this scene—the chest-burster, etc. It gives a fascinating alternate view of what might have been had the film progressed in one direction.

Lindelof’s contribution is even more fascinating.  He announces upfront that he is recording the track before the film’s release but predicts what the criticisms of the film are going to be—and then addresses them.  Every single one.  And his explanations are valid.  And make sense.  He said he purposely writes ambiguously because he likes to have the audience think for themselves and draw their own conclusions.  He feels that the best moviegoing experiences are ones that have you talking for days, weeks, and years afterwards.  He references “Inception” as a film he still talks about a year after he’s seen it.  He realizes that that may be frustrating to certain members of the audience.  He then goes into detail though in explaining exactly what is going on and answers questions about the film in detail.  It really sheds a new light on the film.

The other MAJOR bonus feature is a 3 hour and 40 minute (!) making of documentary from Charles de Laurizka titled “The Furious Gods: Making Prometheus.”  This documentary explores every aspect of the making of Prometheus.  I enjoyed the first 20 minutes or so the best when they were talking about the development of the story and how close they wanted to tie it to “Alien.”  Some very interesting tales there.  The documentary is very well-produced and extensive.

As if that nearly four-hour documentary wasn’t enough, the third disc also contains an additional hour of making-of featurettes.  One of the more interesting ones is about how Ridley Scott came up with a way to tie the “Alien” and “Blade Runner” universes together.  That idea was ultimately abandoned, but makes for an awesome “what if” anyway.

There is a collection of internet promotional videos released before the film came out under a section titled The Peter Weyland Files.  There are 4 total and the best is the one called TED Conference 2023 where a young Peter Weyland (Guy Pearce) gives an inspirational speech where he proclaims that “we are the gods now” and “if you’ll indulge me, I’d like to change the world.”

There are over 36 minutes of deleted and alternate scenes included on the disc as well.  Many of these scenes also enhance the film, and help shine a new perspective on it.  Together these deleted scenes, along with the audio commentaries and making of documentaries help answer questions and flesh out the story.

One may argue that if you have to watch deleted scenes and listen to audio commentaries to make the film accessible, then the film has failed. There is some validity to that argument.  The other side of the argument is that if the filmmakers have the answers to the questions and they purposely designed the film so that audience members would ask questions and seek answers, and leave the film a little frustrated (and leave more questions to be answered in the inevitable sequel), then they succeeded. Perhaps “Prometheus” is a masterpiece. Perhaps “Prometheus” is a flawed masterpiece. Perhaps more time will tell.

Peter Jackson’s Long-Awaited Filmed Adaptation Of THE HOBBIT To Be A Trilogy; Summer 2014 Release Planned For 3rd Film

Peter Jackson will make a third film in his upcoming adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, it was jointly announced today by Toby Emmerich, President and Chief Operating Officer, New Line Cinema, Gary Barber and Roger Birnbaum, Co-Chairman and Chief Executive Officers, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, and Jeff Robinov, President, Warner Bros. Pictures Group.

Jackson, the Academy Award®-winning filmmaker behind the blockbuster “The Lord of the Rings” Trilogy, recently wrapped principal photography on what he originally planned to be a two-film adaptation of The Hobbit, which is set in Middle-earth 60 years before The Lord of the Rings.

Jackson stated, “Upon recently viewing a cut of the first film, and a chunk of the second, Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens and I were very pleased with the way the story was coming together. We recognized that the richness of the story of The Hobbit, as well as some of the related material in the appendices of The Lord of the Rings, gave rise to a simple question: do we tell more of the tale? And the answer from our perspective as filmmakers and fans was an unreserved ‘yes.’ We know the strength of our cast and of the characters they have brought to life. We know creatively how compelling and engaging the story can be and—lastly, and most importantly—we know how much of the tale of Bilbo Baggins, the Dwarves of Erebor, the rise of the Necromancer, and the Battle of Dol Guldur would remain untold if we did not fully realize this complex and wonderful adventure. I’m delighted that New Line, MGM and Warner Bros. are equally enthusiastic about bringing fans this expansive tale across three films.”

Emmerich stated, “We completely support Peter and his vision for bringing this grand adventure to the screen over the course of three films. Peter, Fran and Philippa’s reverence for the material and understanding of these characters ensure an exciting and expanded journey that is bound to please fans around the world.”

“With the abundance of rich material, we fully endorse the decision to further develop what Peter, Fran and Philippa have already begun. We are confident that, with the great care the filmmakers have taken to faithfully bring this journey to the screen, the film will be welcomed by the legions of fans across the globe,” said Barber and Birnbaum.

Robinov added, “Peter, Fran and Philippa have lived in this world and understand more than anyone its tremendous breadth and scope, and the relationships that bind it together. We strongly support their vision to bring this great work fully to life.”

The first film in the trilogy, “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” will be released December 14, 2012, with the second film releasing on December 13, 2013, and the third film slated for summer 2014. All three films will be released in 3D and 2D in select theatres and IMAX.

From Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson comes three films based on The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. The trilogy of films are set in Middle-earth 60 years before “The Lord of the Rings,” which Jackson and his filmmaking team brought to the big screen in the blockbuster trilogy that culminated with the Oscar®-winning “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.”

Ian McKellen returns as Gandalf the Grey, the character he played in “The Lord of the Rings” Trilogy, with Martin Freeman in the central role of Bilbo Baggins, and Richard Armitage as Thorin Oakenshield. Returning cast members from “The Lord of the Rings” Trilogy also include Cate Blanchett, Orlando Bloom, Ian Holm, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, Elijah Wood, and Andy Serkis as “Gollum.” The international ensemble cast also includes (in alphabetical order) John Bell, Jed Brophy, Adam Brown, John Callen, Billy Connolly, Luke Evans, Stephen Fry, Ryan Gage, Mark Hadlow, Peter Hambleton, Barry Humphries, Stephen Hunter, William Kircher, Evangeline Lilly, Sylvester McCoy, Bret McKenzie, Graham McTavish, Mike Mizrahi, James Nesbitt, Dean O’Gorman, Lee Pace, Mikael Persbrandt, Conan Stevens, Ken Stott, Jeffrey Thomas, and Aidan Turner.

The screenplay for “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” is by Fran Walsh & Philippa Boyens & Peter Jackson & Guillermo del Toro. Jackson is also producing the film, together with Carolynne Cunningham, Zane Weiner and Fran Walsh. The executive producers are Alan Horn, Toby Emmerich, Ken Kamins and Carolyn Blackwood, with Boyens and Eileen Moran serving as co-producers.

Under Jackson’s direction, all three movies are being shot in digital 3D using the latest camera and stereo technology. Additional filming, as with principal photography, is taking place at Stone Street Studios, Wellington, and on location around New Zealand.

“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” and its successive installments are productions of New Line Cinema and MGM, with New Line managing production. Warner Bros. Pictures is handling worldwide theatrical distribution, with select international territories as well as all international television licensing, being handled by MGM.

A VERY HAROLD AND KUMAR 3D CHRISTMAS – The Review

Once again the magic of the holidays revives the third installment of a comedy movie franchise. In 1989 the Griswald family bounced back from their dismal European vacation with NATIONIAL LAMPOON’S CHRISTMAS VACATION, and now after their lackluster Guantanamo Bay escape those best buds are back in top form with A VERY HAROLD AND KUMAR 3D CHRISTMAS. I’ll warn you that this film isn’t the family friendly romp with Chevy Chase’s clan-it earns that R rating, but it’s a return of the same kind of smart ‘ dumb’ comedy craftsmanship that imbued that original quest for “sliders”. And since it’s ” the most wonderful time of the year’, there’s a little extra to tug at your heart-strings ( to offset those sore-from-laughter ribs ).

After their last misadventure things have radically changed for one half of this doper-duo. Harold ( John Cho ) is now a successful Wall Street investor complete with fawning assistant ( Bobby Lee ) and a group of protesters outside his building ( like our current occupiers in the news ). He’s got a spacious house in the suburbs he shares with his Latin bombshell wife Maria ( Paula Garces ), who’s VERY ready to start a family. Speaking of family, her kin, headed by her intimidating dad ( Danny Trejo ) are spending the holidays there. Meanwhile things are not going so well with Kumar ( Kal Penn ). After failing his medical school drug test and getting dumped by his gal Vanessa, he spends most of his days getting high and watching TV. That is until a package for Harold mistakenly gets delivered to his apartment. His attempt to get the package to Harold begins a chain of events that encompasses a quest for the last perfect Christmas tree, an internet virgin, her Ukrainian mobster poppa, the must have holiday toy- the Wafflebot, and good ole’ Saint Nick himself. And could there be a Harold and Kumar epic without some quality time spent with the great NPH-Neil Patrick Harris?

After the glut of 3D flicks this year it was great to see a movie having fun with and poking fun at the format. The producers knew to really slow down the objects coming toward the viewer. This may be the most entertaining use of the technology since last year’s PIRANHA 3D or JACKASS 3D. The film makers are also having fun with the trappings of the Christmas movies with the gaudy decorations, tacky musical numbers, goofy Santa, and that crazy waffle-making droid. Hey, there’s even a great homage to Bob Clark’s A CHRISTMAS STORY. Cho and  Penn are in fine form ( there are in-jokes about the actors’ jobs since the last H & K outing ), and they’ve got some terrific comedic backup players. Trejo is funny and frightening ( can you imagine having Machete for a father-in-law? ). Elias Koteas also brings the brutality in his mob kingpin role. Before they re-unite our heroes have both made new best buds. Thomas Lennon scores big laughs as Harold’s wimpy, eager to please, single dad neighbor who tries to protect his toddler daughter from the chaos. And Kumar’s next door neighbor pal is the nerdy sex-crazed Adrian played by the manic Amir Blumenfeld. But of all these great performers, the movie’s MVP is once again NPH. This time we’re treated to his exceptional musical skills before we get another visit with the maniacal horndog of the previous films. He doesn’t appear till after the midway point, but it is so worth the wait. Sure the film’s crude, lewd, and politically incorrect, but unlike several recent R-rated comedies ( looking at you again CHANGE -UP!) this doesn’t have a cruel, mean bent to it. Well, maybe in the clay-animated sequence, but ,hey it’s just a big dream. If you’re in the mood for some raunch with your reindeer then this is your perfect stocking stuffer ( if the boys didn’t already stash their herbs there )!

X-MEN: FIRST CLASS – The Review

The other day I was thinking the concept of a movie prequel was a fairly new notion. I suppose it was George Lucas who really promoted that idea with his first trilogy in 1999 with STAR WARS: THE PHANTOM MENACE. But as I thought about it, movie prequels have been around for a while. Back in the 30’s and 40’s they were made to delve into the backgrounds of historical figures as in YOUNG TOM EDISON and YOUNG MR. LINCOLN. In the early 70’s we had BUTCH AND SUNDANCE : THE EARLY YEARS. The 80’s saw YOUNG SHERLOCK HOLMES, and INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM ( which technically is a prequel to RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK as it is set a couple of years earlier ). The post Star Wars first trilogy prequels have been used as a way to restart or reboot an aging franchise. In that way CASINO ROYAL was a Bond restart. Sometimes this re-inveigorates the series with fresh blood as J.J. Abrams did with STAR TREK  in 2009. This has been done again with Matthew Vaughn’s X- MEN: FIRST CLASS.   A film series that limped through two lackluster sequels and a spin-off (  X- MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE ) now seems fresh and exciting once again.

The first X- Men movie was set in 2000, so to see how the group was first formed we’ve got to go back to the swingin’ 60’s.  That is after a brief stop in the 1940’s and World War II. The memory of young Erik Lehnsherr being separated from his parents at a Nazi concentration camp in occupied Poland is replayed. This time his gifts are observed by a Nazi scientist. Back in upstate New York young Charles Xavier comes upon his mother making a midnight snack. He sees through the ruse and meets a kindred spirit: the shape shifting Raven ( later Mystique ). Back at the camp the Nazi scientist ( Sebastian Shaw played by Kevin Bacon ) murders Erik’s mother to pressure the young boy into using his talents. The boy’s fury unleashes his mutant magnetism much to Shaw’s delight. Now we leap to the 60’s -1962 to be exact. Charles Xavier ( James McAvoy ) and his adopted sister Raven ( Jennifer Lawrence ) are two star students at Oxford while Erik ( Michael Fassbender ) explores Switzerland and Argentina in his quest for revenge on Shaw. In Las Vegas, CIA agent Moira MacTaggert observes a high ranking US general entering the Hellfire Club ( along with several barely clad female escorts ). Thinking on her feet, Moiria sheds her dress and enters the club as one of the escorts. Inside, the general is taken to a private booth by Emma Frost ( January Jones ). Through a secret entrance they are sent to a private room where Shaw and his two aides Riptide and Azazel greet them. Shaw is paying the general to use his influence to get a missile base in Turkey. Later Moira enlists Charles and Raven in an assault on Shaw’s yacht. There they meet Erik, who is thwarted in his attempt to kill Shaw. Reluctantly Erik agrees to join them in their quest to stop Shaw and his crew. Since Shaw, Frost, Riptide, and Azazel all have mutant abilities, Charles uses a device called Cerebro created by the CIA’sresident genius Hank McCoy ( Nicholas Hoult )  to seek other gifted individuals. Can this young team stop Shaw in his quest for a nuclear nightmare?

Director Vaughn is no stranger to this material ( after helming the comic book-based  KICK-ASS ) and keeps the plot moving at a great clip. The film could use a few minutes trimmed from it’s 2 and a 1/4 hour running time, but it  never seems to slow for too long-unlike some other Summer actioners ( I’m looking at you, Capt. Jack! ). The film makers do a fairly good job of re-creating the look of the 60’s in the sets, fashions, and autos. I have to nit-pick over some of the hairstyles. A Russian general would never have hair over his back collar. Speaking of 60’s fashion, January Jones is no stranger to them as part of TV’s Mad Men. Her Emma Frost is almost Betty Draper with super powers. Scary thought! McAvoy exudes intelligence and even has a bit of fun with the later stodgy Professor X. Love his groovy mutant pick-up line! Michael Fassbender brings a sinister, sexy energy to his future super villain,Magneto. Jennifer Lawrence shows that her WINTER’S BONE performance was the start of a great screen career with her conflicted Raven. My favorite of the original X-Men was the Beast and Hoult really nails his portrait of the clumsy braniac who desperately wants to fit in. I was a bit conflicted over Kevin Bacon. I wasn’t sure if he was right for this ruthless, evil mutant, but he uses his charm to great advantage when wheeling and dealing. I’ll give you a heads up-there’s no post end credits bonus scene on this superhero flick. Oh, and I’ve got to give special kudos to the producers for not giving in to greed and releasing this in 3D. Excelsior! Now I don’t want to spoil any surprises, so I’ll just tell you to hold off on a rest room or snack run when the Cerebro sequence begins. After THOR and this movie, it’s turning out to be a great superhero Summer. I’d say Marvel is two for two, but this film is not produced by Marvel Studios as was THOR, the Iron Man movies, and the upcoming CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER. This a great popcorn picture with a bit of a social message snuck in between the fantastic stunts and effects.

GK Films Reboots TOMB RAIDER Film Franchise

In a pre-emptive strike, GK Films has come on board to acquire the feature film rights to TOMB RAIDER and will reboot the successful action-adventure franchise aiming for a 2013 release for the first film.

Produced by Graham King, the films will create daring new adventures for the young and dynamic Lara Croft.

GK Films acquired the film rights from interactive entertainment company, Square Enix Ltd. In Dec 2010, Square Enix subsidiary, Crystal Dynamics, revealed a new game for TOMB RAIDER based around the origins of the Lara Croft story.

“We are very excited to be rebooting what is already a hugely successful film franchise and continuing the TOMB RAIDER phenomenon,” said King.

The original game was published in 1996 by the London based video game company Eidos and became one of the most successful video games of the time. Today Eidos (including Crystal Dynamics), is part of an international interactive entertainment group, Square Enix and the stage is set for this new chapter in TOMB RAIDER history.

A pop culture phenomenon, the original TOMB RAIDER games have sold over 35million game units worldwide and Lara Croft, along with Mario Brothers is the most recognized name in gaming history.

Starring Angelina Jolie, Paramount Pictures made two movies based on the daredevil archaeologist on a series of global missions in 2001 and 2003. They grossed a total of $432m at the worldwide box office.

Senior Vice President, Grey Rembert will oversee the project for GK Films.
