CIRQUE DU SOLEIL: WORLDS AWAY Spectacular Bloomingdale’s Holiday Windows In NYC

Photos: Kristina Bumphrey / Starpix for Paramount Pictures.

Bloomingdales unveiled their 2012 Holiday windows celebrating CIRQUE DU SOLEIL: WORLDS AWAY, in New York City on Tuesday, November 13th, 2012. See the windows through the holidays at the store on 59th and Lexington in NYC!

CIRQUE DU SOLEIL: WORLDS AWAY, from Paramount Pictures and James Cameron, will be in theaters on December 21st, 2012.

From the big top to the big screen, Academy Award®-nominated director Andrew Adamson and visionary filmmaker James Cameron invite audiences on an all-new 3D adventure – CIRQUE DU SOLEIL: WORLDS AWAY. Two young people journey through the astonishing and dreamlike worlds of Cirque du Soleil to find each other as audiences experience the immersive 3D technology that allows them to leap, soar, swim and dance with the performers.

Unique in scope, this immersive experience melds acts from seven live Cirque du Soleil shows in Las Vegas — “O,” KÀ, Mystère, Viva ELVIS, CRISS ANGEL Believe, Zumanity and The Beatles LOVE — into a circus love story produced, written and directed by Academy Award® nominee Andrew Adamson (Shrek, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe). The film stars Cirque du Soleil strap aerialists Igor Zaripov (The Aerialist) and former artist Erica Kathleen Linz (Mia) as the young couple.

When Adamson chose acts from the seven live Cirque shows to use in the film, he picked those that would lend themselves to the storyline of Mia searching for the Aerialist from tent to tent. Each time she peels back the curtain and steps inside, another Cirque du Soleil world opens to her. These worlds are:

  • “O”“Water represents both life and the unconscious, the dream state and illusion because of its reflection,” says Pierre Parisien, Cirque du Soleil senior artistic director. ”It’s sort of the unseen realm of spirits, of ghosts, and the flying boat is like The Flying Dutchman. They are trying to lure Mia aboard but she won’t go.” It is the first tent Mia visits after she falls into an alternate desert wasteland populated by six big tops, “six kinds of limbos,” says Linz.
  • To Adamson was about spectacle, with a stage a quarter of the size of a football field that lifts vertically, spins around and changes. “What I wanted to capture wasn’t just the act and the performers but the ingenuity. Part of what Cirque does so well is combine art and technology and present you with this completely different imagery you’ve never seen before.”
  • MystèreMystère is highly acrobatic, the most acrobatic show we have,” says James Hadley, Cirque du Soleil’s senior artistic director for resident shows in North America. It is also the longest running Cirque du Soleil show in Las Vegas. Hanging from a cube in mid-air, an aerialist performs a ballet with seemingly effortless maneuvers, foreshadowing what is to come for the star-crossed lovers.
  • Viva ELVIS In the film, a mysterious self-propelled tricycle leads Mia to the Viva Elvis tent, where performers dressed as super heroes fly off trampolines to the music of Elvis.
  • CRISS ANGEL BELIEVE Mia travels through six Cirque du Soleil tents that occupy a limbo state between life and death in search of love lost. The seventh element is not a tent but Cirque du Soleil’s very own peculiar White Rabbit, a dancing disembodied bunny head from CRISS ANGEL Believe, who makes a timely appearance, beckoning her to follow.
  • zumanity “The act that we’re using from Zumanity is very small and contained, but it fits thematically well where we’ve placed it,” says Adamson. What first appears to be water on the moon transforms into a water-filled glass container from which a seductive contortionist entices the Aerialist to join her.
  • The Beatles love The act built around the song Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite is “a circus-based theme,” says Adamson, “so it tied us back into the beginning of our opening circus.” Hadley adds, “Actually Mr. Kite, of all the acts that we filmed, probably has the biggest number of artists in one act.”

Presented by Paramount Pictures and Academy Award® winner James Cameron (Avatar, Titanic), the film is a Cirque du Soleil production in association with Reel FX Inc., Strange Weather Films and CAMERON | PACE Group. Produced by Cirque du Soleil producer Martin Bolduc, Adamson and his Strange Weather Films’ partner Aron Warner, Cirque du Soleil Worlds Away is captured in 3D by executive producer Cameron and his CAMERON | PACE Group partner Vincent Pace, the film’s 3D executive producer. Executive producers are Cameron, Jacques Méthé, Cary Granat and Ed Jones. Director of photography is Brett Turnbull. Composer Benoit Jutras (Cirque du Soleil shows Quidam, “O,”. La Nouba and, as co-writer, Mystère) wrote the score and the opening song.   Stephen Barton contributed additional music to the final strap act. The editor is Sim Evan-Jones.

LES MISERABLES Strikes A Pose In Vogue, Hugh Jackman In Best Actor Race, Russell Crowe Sings In International Trailer

The cast of director Tom Hooper’s LES MISERABLES are dreaming a dream in a gorgeous new spread by photographer Annie Leibovitz in the latest Vogue photo shoot. Still sight unseen and just going by the trailer below, I will go out on a ledge and move this film right to the top of the Best Picture pile. Academy voters will love this type of big production, grand scale slice of old Hollywood!

In the latest Gold Derby podcast, Oscar pundits Thelma Adams and Tom O’Neil discuss the Oscar race. I noticed in particular Hugh Jackman’s name pop up in the Best Actor race during their half hour conversation.

She and I concur that the biggest suspense looming over this race is the quality of the performance by the star of still-unseen “Les Miserables.” “The huge open question is Hugh Jackman,” she adds.

Listen HERE for their thoughts on Russell Crowe as well. Speaking of Crowe, watch the full international trailer and hear the Oscar-winner sing at last.

Oh yeah, its all over… I give credit where credit is due as far as LINCOLN goes. Fine give the Academy Award to Daniel Day-Lewis and screenwriter Tony Kushner (maybe even Spielberg). But Tom Hooper and the epic he’s apparently made! LES MISERABLES wins Best Picture.

Les Misérables is the motion-picture adaptation of the beloved global stage sensation seen by more than 60 million people in 42 countries and in 21 languages around the globe and still breaking box-office records everywhere in its 27th year. Helmed by The King’s Speech’s Academy Award®-winning director, Tom Hooper, the Working Title/Cameron Mackintosh production stars Hugh Jackman, Oscar® winner Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Eddie Redmayne, Aaron Tveit, Samantha Barks, with Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen.

Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, Les Misérables tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption—a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit.  Jackman plays ex-prisoner Jean Valjean, hunted for decades by the ruthless policeman Javert (Crowe) after he breaks parole. When Valjean agrees to care for factory worker Fantine’s (Hathaway) young daughter, Cosette, their lives change forever.

In December 2012, the world’s longest-running musical brings its power to the big screen in Tom Hooper’s sweeping and spectacular interpretation of Victor Hugo’s epic tale.  With international superstars and beloved songs—including “I Dreamed a Dream,” “Bring Him Home,” “One Day More” and “On My Own”—Les Misérables, the show of shows, is now reborn as the cinematic musical experience of a lifetime.

Deadly EVIL DEAD First Look Image

(EW.com)

In just hours, AMC will unveil the opener to season 3 of The Walking Dead. So to get you ready, check out this deadly first look at TriStar Pictures’ EVIL DEAD. The photo was released this weekend at the New York Comic-Con.

According to the official synopsis, five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin. When they discover a Book of the Dead, they unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.

The film is produced by Rob Tapert, Sam Raimi (writer and director of the 1981 film) and Bruce Campbell aka “Ash” of the original trilogy. I’m particularly partial to 1992’s ARMY OF DARKNESS with it’s classic lines, “Shop smart. Shop S-Mart. You got that?,” “This… is my boomstick!” and “Give me some sugar, baby.”

The anticipated remake of the 1981 cult-hit horror film is from the director and writer of PANIC ATTACK! – Fede Alvarez & Rodo Sayagues Mendez. Here’s our preview of the sci-fi short back in 2009. Watch their film below and then tell us how excited you are for the new version of EVIL DEAD!

The EVIL DEAD cast includes Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Jessica Lucas, and Elizabeth Blackmore.

EVIL DEAD will be in theaters April 12, 2013.

See the Trailer and Photos for SPECIAL FORCES

A trailer for SPECIAL FORCES, a new action film starring Diane Kruger and Djimon Hounsou, has arrived. It looks like a familiar bit of men on a mission / high-stakes rescue stuff. It’s interesting how there’s been a sudden cluster of movies featuring special ops teams in the past year. There’s this film, ACT OF VALOR, and the upcoming ZERO DARK THIRTY. It’s absolute coincidence that this all comes in the wake of spec ops receiving some pop cultural scrutiny due to the killing of Osama bin Laden (even ZDK, which is about the hunt for bin Laden, was in production for a while before his death). Sometimes there are just odd convergences of the creative minds in the film world. At any rate, time will tell whether this film proves to be a worthwhile addition to this budding mini-genre.

In Stéphane Rybojad’s SPECIAL FORCES, war correspondent Elsa Cassanova (Diane Kruger) is taken hostage by the Taliban. Faced with her imminent execution, a Special Forces unit is dispatched to free her. In some of the worlds’ most breathtaking yet hostile landscapes, a relentless pursuit begins between her kidnappers and a group of soldiers (Djimon Hounsou, Benoît Magimel, Denis Ménochet) who risk their lives to bring her home alive.

SPECIAL FORCES opens in theaters and on VOD and iTunes October 12, 2012.

Arnold Schwarzenegger And Sylvester Stallone In THE TOMB Photo

Photo: Alan Markfield © 2013 Summit Entertainment, LLC. All rights reserved.

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone star in THE TOMB in this first photo from director Mikael Håfström’s (THE RITE) film.

In this action-packed thriller, Roy Breslin (Stallone), the world’s foremost expert on security, must team with a prisoner named Church (Schwarzenegger), to escape from the most impregnable penitentiary ever built, a prison he himself helped design.

Roy Breslin is the very best at what he does — he helps improve security at the world’s most secure prisons by posing as an inmate and escaping from them. So far he’s batting 1000. But everything changes when he’s double-crossed and finds himself incarcerated, for real this time, deep within a virtually escape-proof prison inside a tanker in the middle of the ocean!

Cut off completely from his support team and guarded by a ruthless team of trained military personnel, Breslin must team with fellow prisoner, Church, to accomplish the impossible and escape the inescapable.

No release date has been set by Summit Entertainment yet. THE TOMB also features Jim Caviezel, Vincent D’Onofrio, Sam Neill, Vinnie Jones, 50 Cent and Amy Ryan.

First Official Image of Daniel Day-Lewis From Steven Spielberg’s LINCOLN; In Theaters Nov 9

Check out EW.com for the first look at Daniel Day Lewis in the title role of LINCOLN directed by Steven Spielberg. LINCOLN focuses on the last four months of the president’s ’s life and the political strategizing he undertook at the close of the Civil War to ensure that slavery would be forever outlawed. “Our movie is really about a working leader who must make tough decisions and get things done in the face of overwhelming opposition,” Spielberg says.
