Julia Leigh’s SLEEPING BEAUTY Acquired By IFC’s Sundance Selects

IFC’s Sundance Selects has acquired the U.S. rights to SLEEPING BEAUTY, the Julia Leigh-directed Cannes Film Festival which premiered May 11th. The film stars Emily Browning, Rachael Blake, Ewen Leslie, Peter Carroll, Chris Haywood, and was produced by Jessica Brentnall.

“You will go to sleep: you will wake up. It will be as if those hours never existed.” Death-haunted, quietly reckless, Lucy is a young university student who takes a job as a Sleeping Beauty. In the Sleeping Beauty Chamber old men seek an erotic experience that requires Lucy’s absolute submission. This unsettling task starts to bleed into Lucy’s daily life and she develops an increasing need to know what happens to her when she is asleep.

Jonathan Sehring, President of Sundance Selects, said: “For the last 5 days, people throughout Cannes have been discussing SLEEPING BEAUTY. We are thrilled to introduce Julia Leigh and her arresting debut to American audiences, and to continuing the discussion.”

According to Deadline, UTA brokered the deal with Sundance Selects acquisitions exec Arianna Bocco. UTA reps Leigh and Browning, with the latter managed by Michael Aglion and Catherine Poulton in Australia.

Princess Diana Controversial Documentary UNLAWFUL KILLING Will Premiere At Cannes This Friday

How’s this for timing – a mere two weeks after the Royal Wedding, the controversial documentary regarding the death of Princess Diana and her companion Dodi Fayed in 1997, will finally see the light of day at the 64th Cannes Film Festival. Highly unlikely that the film will ever be shown in Great Britain, this film will contain a never-before-scene picture of Diana as she lay dying. WAMG was one of the first sites to review the film in August 2009. Here’s a sneak preview of UNLAWFUL KILLING.

The film which is financed by businessman Mohamed Al-Fayed, father of Dodi Fayed, will premiere this Friday, May 13th. It’s been reported that Al-Fayad will be in Cannes for the screening.

Read this article from filmmaker Keith Allen (TRAINSPOTTING), father of pop star Lily Allen, on how UNLAWFUL KILLING is not about a conspiracy before the crash, but a provable conspiracy after the crash.

Italian Director Bernardo Bertolucci To Be Recipient Of Honorary Palme At Opening Ceremony Of The Festival de Cannes

This is a novelty for the Festival de Cannes: from 2011, the organizers will award an annual Honorary Palme d’or, which will be presented during the Opening Ceremony.

This recognition is attributed to an important filmmaker, whose work is authoritative but never got a Palme d’or. In the recent past, Woody Allen, in 2002, or Clint Eastwood in 2009, were awarded this distinction by President Gilles Jacob, on behalf of the Board of Directors of the Festival de Cannes. Now, the act becomes tradition and will be annual, taking place at the opening of the event.

The filmmaker (poet Attilio Bertolucci’s son) has marked Italian cinema with intimate masterpieces as well as monumental frescoes: from Prima della Revoluzione (1964) to Novecento (1976), from The Conformist (1970) to The Last Emperor (1987), his political and social involvement, driven by a profound lyricism and an elegant and accurate direction, gives his films a unique place in the history of world cinema.

“The quality of his work, which appears today in all its uniqueness and the extent of this work we perceive every day more vividly, the strength of his commitment to cinema and the ties that bind him to Cannes, make Bernaldo Bertollucci the first legitimate recipient.” say President Gilles Jacob and Thierry Frémaux General Delegate.

The Honorary Palme will be attributed to him Wednesday, May 11, at the Opening Ceremony of the 64th edition of the Festival, in the presence of the Jury chaired by Robert De Niro, who was one of the actors in Novecento (1900).

The 64th Festival de Cannes is to take place Wednesday May 11th to Sunday 22nd May 2011. Midnight in Paris, the new film by Woody Allen will open the Festival de Cannes on May 11th in the LumièreTheatre, in the presence of the Jury presided by Robert De Niro.

Official 64th Festival de Cannes Poster

This photo of Faye Dunaway was taken by Jerry Schatzberg in 1970.

Model of sophistication and timeless elegance, it is an embodiment of the cinematic dream that the Festival de Cannes seeks to maintain.

Jerry Schatzberg is a filmmaker from New York who won the Palme d’Or in 1973 for Scarecrow. He began his career as a photographer and his work is quickly noticed, in particular a series of Bob Dylan photos from the 60s which ultimately are used on the cover of the legendary album Blonde on Blonde. In the early 70s Schatzberg turns to filmmaking and his first film, Puzzle of a Downfall Child (1970), reveals an exceptional sense of framing and lighting for a first-timer. Panic In Needle Park (1971) with newcomer Al Pacino and Scarecrow follow and are both award-winners in Cannes.

Puzzle of a Downfall Child, in which Faye Dunaway has the starring role, has been restored by Universal Pictures. Rarely seen on the big screen the film will be distributed in France by Carlotta in the fall and the restored print will be screened in Cannes in the presence of the director and his actress.

The poster was produced by the H5 design agency, which is also providing the graphics for the 2011 Festival.

MIDNIGHT IN PARIS, the new film by Woody Allen will open the Festival de Cannes on May 11th in the LumièreTheatre, in the presence of the Jury presided by Robert De Niro.

The 64th Festival de Cannes is to take place Wednesday May 11th to Sunday 22nd May 2011.

A DANGEROUS METHOD Starring Keira Knightley, Michael Fassbender & Viggo Mortensen To Be Released By Year’s End

David Cronenberg’s (EASTERN PROMISES, A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE, THE FLY) new movie, A DANGEROUS METHOD will be released by the end of the year according to the film’s production company, Recorded Picture Company. Starring Keira Knightley (LONDON BOULEVARD, NEVER LET ME GO), Michael Fassbender (JANE EYRE, INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS) and Viggo Mortensen (THE ROAD, EASTERN PROMISES), this hotly anticipated drama, written by Academy Award winner Christopher Hampton (DANGEROUS LIAISONS), represents the third collaboration between Oscar winning producer Jeremy Thomas (THE LAST EMPEROR) and director David Cronenberg.

A DANGEROUS METHOD is among 40 films listed by indieWIRE as hotly anticipated to screen at Cannes this year.

With a few weeks remaining until the announcement of the Cannes Film Festival lineup on April 14th, speculation is intensifying. After what many a deemed a relatively lackluster lineup last year due to many would-be entries not being finished in time, this year looks like it could be quite the doozy.

Synopsis:

A beautiful young woman, driven mad by her past. An ambitious doctor on a mission to succeed. An esteemed mentor with a revolutionary cure. Let the mind games begin…

Seduced by the challenge of an impossible case, the driven Dr. Jung (Michael Fassbender) takes the unbalanced yet beautiful Sabina Spielrein (Keira Knightley) as his patient. Jung’s weapon is the method of his master, the renowned Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen). Both men fall under Sabina’s spell. Into the mix comes Otto Gross (Vincent Cassel), a debauched patient who is determined to push the boundaries.

Jung gives in to lust and a passionate affair begins. Sabina becomes the catalyst for Jung’s inspired theories. Meanwhile Freud goes further, delving into Sabina’s brilliant mind until she can take the situation no longer. The bonds between the trio shatter. Driven by desire and revenge, with their reputations at stake, Freud and Jung embark on a battle of wills.

In this dangerous game of sex and intellect, the price will be Sabina’s soul.

The film is produced by Academy® Award Winning producer Jeremy Thomas and Recorded Picture Company and Co-Produced by Marco Mehlitz of Lago Film and Marty Katz of ProsperoFilm. Millbrook Pictures Karl Spoerri also serves a co-producer. Thomas Sterchi and Matthias Zimmermann are Executive Producers alongside RPC’s Peter Watson and Stephan Mallmann.

Robert De Niro Will Be President Of Jury For The 64th Festival de Cannes

The Cannes Film Festival announced today that Robert De Niro will preside over this year’s festival.

The American actor, director and producer Robert De Niro will be President of the Jury of the 64th Festival de Cannes, due to take place from May 11th to 22th 2011. When he accepted the invitation, Robert De Niro said, “The Cannes Film Festival is a rare opportunity for me as it is one of the oldest and one of the best in the world.”

Inviting Robert De Niro as President of the Jury of Cannes, the organizers want to pay also tribute to the co-founder of the Tribeca Film Festival which celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2011. Robert De Niro, well known for his love of New York, co-founded Manhattan’s Tribeca Film Center in 1989, the Tribeca Film Festival in 2002, which has a sister festival in Doha.

“As co-founder of the Tribeca Film Festival and the Doha Tribeca Film Festival I have an increased appreciation for the jury, who serve, undertaking an important role in choosing films that are represented in the world of film at its highest level, and these types of festivals help connect the international film community and have a lasting cultural impact.”  M. De Niro adds, “Having served as President of the Jury in the eighties twice, I know this isn’t an easy task for me or my fellow jury members, but I’m very honored and happy to head the jury for this year’s Cannes Film Festival.”

Considered the best actor of his generation, Robert De Niro has built a durable star career out of his extraordinary ability to disappear into a character. The son of artists, De Niro was raised in New York’s Greenwich Village and studied under Stella Adler. After rising to recognition with Martin Scorsese’s MEAN STREETS (1973) and Coppola’s THE GODFATHER PART II (1974, best supporting actor academy award), he gained stardom with TAXI DRIVER Palme d’or 1976. He went then from one masterpiece to the other : Bernardo Bertoulucci’s NOVECENTO (1976), Elia Kazan’s LAST TYCOON (1976), Michael Cimino’s THE DEER HUNTER (1978), Sergio Leone’s ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA (1984), Brian de Palma’s THE UNTOUCHABLES (1987), Martin Scorsese’s GOODFELLAS (1990) and CASINO (1995), Terry Gilliam’s BRAZIL (1985) and Michael Mann’s HEAT (1995), among others.

In 1980, he won the Academy Award for Best Actor for RAGING BULL (1980), directed by Martin Scorsese.

He came for eight films at the Festival de Cannes, two of which won Palme d’Or : TAXI DRIVER, in 1976, and ten years later, THE MISSION directed by Roland Joffe. De Niro dedicated to his father, a surrealist painter, his own directorial debut, A BRONX TALE (1993), which earned praise. In 2006, he directed a second feature THE GOOD SHEPHERD.

His latest blockbuster comedies, ANALYZE THIS (1999) and MEET THE PARENTS (2000) spawned sequels : LITTLE FOCKERS, released late December, is currently enjoying a successful run in France.
