‘Extract’ Gets a Double Entendre-Laden Poster

extract-poster

After all the hullabalo about the poster for ‘Zack and Miri Make a Porno,’ it’s shocking that the MPAA has approved a poster such as the one you see above.   It’s for ‘Extract,’ the new comedy by Mike Judge, and, if you don’t see the double entendres strewn throughout the poster, then you’re not paying attention.

All in all, it’s a funny poster that, judging from the trailer, seems to capture the tone of the film.   Something that I’m not too sure about, though, is how many times we really need to see on a poster who the director of the film is.   By my count, there are three different indications on this thing that it’s a Mike Judge film.   That’s a little overkill in my estimation.

Regardless, Mike Judge is a great director of comedy, and ‘Extract’ looks like just one more indication of that fact.

‘Extract’ comes out on September 4th.

Review: ‘Observe and Report’

observeandreport56

Jody Hill has reached a level that normally takes writers/directors years to obtain and he is making it look way to easy. Everything he touches right now is instant, guaranteed comedic gold and ‘Observe and Report’ is nothing less than that.

Dont go into this movie expecting your typical slapstick stupid funny antics because what we have here is “darker” comedy or as Jody puts it “a f—ed up movie” and I will assure you that is what you are going to get. You will laugh, you will cringe and by the end of the movie you are going to be saying “Jody Hill is a f—ing genius! Also, please be warned that although another mall cop movie came out recently(not to mention is was horrible) that you can take the kids to, this is not that movie and please leave the kids at home.

Seth Rogen steps outside of his normal realm of funny and gears up to play Ronnie Barnhardt, a bi-polar mall cop who becomes obsessed with breaking the case of the mall flasher despite the local law enforcement(Ray Liotta) being put on the case. Ronnie uses his group of merry men, Dennis(Michael Pena), Charles(Jesse Plemmons who does a killer job in the movie as well) and the Yuen Twins(John and Matt Yuan) to take care of the mall while he is fast on the tracks of the flasher. Even more ridiculous than Ronnie’s behaviour is how the rest of the mall security team completely buys into the world that he lives in.

One of the greatest scenes in the movie is between Ronnie and Saddamn(Aziz Ansari) in which they go back and forth about whether he is a terrorist and to blame for the crimes that have happened in the mall. At one point Ronnie accuses him of trying to blow up the Chic-Fil-A and we get one of the greatest lines in the history of cinema, which I will not tell you because you need to see it for yourself, because its fuckin’ delicious.

I should also tell you that Anna Faris is one of the sexiest women in hollywood and she really shows you why in this movie. She is both beautiful and brilliantly funny, which is a wicked combo and melts my heart. She plays Brandi, the slutty makeup counter girl that Ronnie has a creepy obsession with and makes it his job to catch the flasher that has “psychologically” damaged her. There is also a scene between them that alot of people are freaking out about because it..well just go see it for yourself and tell me if you think people should shut up about it or not.

The entire cast will blow you away(Michael Pena I am talking about you dude!), everyone in the movie plays their part above and beyond what you would even expect. The soundtrack “kicks fucking ass”(thank you Jack Black in ‘High Fidelity’), and the movie delivers the goods, which happens to be sick and twisted comedy done in a way that only Jody Hill can and for that we salute you sir.

‘Year One’ Cut Down to PG13

year-one

Yeah, that’s right. Â  ‘Year One’ was rated R for about a minute and a half until director Harold Ramis and producer Judd Apatow made the appropriate cuts to appease the MPAA. Â  All in all, I’d say this is a good thing. Â  It’s not like the film was going to feel like an R-rated comedy in the least anyway. Â  They may as well go for the bank and make it a little more kid-friendly.

On Tuesday, the MPAA upheld the R rating the film initally got, despite personal appeals by Apatow and Ramis. Â  At first, it seemed like the filmmakers were going to roll with the R, but, today, word came down that they had made the cuts suggested by the ratings board.

‘Year One’ comes out on June 19th.

TV Review: ‘Krod Mandoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire’ Pilot

con-krod-mandoon-girls

Tonight is the premiere of Comedy Central’s newest original series, Krod Mandoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire. You may remember my interview with the cast and creators of the show from this year’s New York Comic Con. If not, here it is again†¦

I really enjoyed talking to them and despite a not so funny trailer, I was looking forward to checking out the show. It sounded good during the interview but I was not expecting much. I am pleased to let you know that I was entertained while watching the pilot.

There are a lot of funny lines/gags and even more really bad ones. The acting is completely over the top, especially Matt Lucas as the evil Chancellor Dongalor. It also gives a Xena/Hercules vibe but tries to stand more on the comedy than action. However, this all works to some degree because the show is a spoof.

I like Sean Maguire as Krod Mandoon. I think Sean is a good actor and his charm does sell a few of the lesser jokes. India de Beaufort is beautiful as the not so conservative Aneka. Kevin Hart and Steve Spiers both offer some laughs as the sorcerer and strongman of the group. Marques Ray plays the character of the ultra flamboyant Bruce. He was my least favorite of the group because he was the most clichà ©d; however, he also had some of the raunchiest lines of the show and they were at times funny. Surprisingly, this show is fairly tame. With the stuff that broadcast TV gets away with, a cable show like this on the same network as South Park should not be holding back. It clearly seems like they are though. Adding a bit more raunch and some intelligent satirical humor could really bump this show up a few notches. It would also further distance this show from Xena/Hercules.

Overall, the show needs work but it is watchable. Fans of medieval fantasy shows may get a bigger kick out of it but I recommend giving it a try. The characters are likeable and there are some funny jokes. This could turn in to a decent series. It probably won’t†¦but it could.

Don’t Judge This ‘Extract’ Trailer

affleckextract

Okay, lame headlines aside, this movie looks friggin’ hilarious.   After ‘Office Space’ and ‘Idiocracy,’ you just knew Mike Judge’s next film would be equally as funny, and the new trailer for ‘Extract’ proves it.   Everyone who watched the 10th anniversary of ‘Office Space’ at SXSW were treated to a scene from this new film, and the verdict was pretty unanimously positive.

David O. Russell to bring ‘Aaron and Sarah’ together

davidorusselldas

Finally, the director of one of my absolute favorite comedies (I Heart Huckabees) has finally got some new work coming out. David O. Russell (Flirting with Disaster, Three Kings) will direct ‘Aaron and Sarah’ for Fox 2000.

The story of ‘Aaron and Sarah’ is a romantic comedy that follows a nerdy dude who meets a popular girl his freshman year in high school. The two become friends over their four-year high school career, through four proms and one funeral.

Chad Gomez Creasey and Dara Resnik Creasey wrote the screenplay, which was originally titled ‘B.F.F.’ The movie has been described as a teen comedy that hearkens back to those of director John Hughes’ films, which is sort of new territory for Russell. ‘Nailed’ is set to come out this year, his first since 2004 when he finished ‘I Heart Huckabees’ and ‘Soldiers Pay’.

‘Eastbound and Down’ renewed for a 2nd season

eastboundanddown

By far the funniest show on TV is ‘Eastbound and Down’ and it just got picked up for a 2nd season which is no surprise. Everything that Jody Hill touches turns into pure gold, and this show is no exception. It also doesnt hurt that its executive produced by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay.

For those of you that dont know about the show, Danny McBride stars as Kenny Powers who is a foul mouthed former MLB pitcher who is washed up and hast lost all his money. He is forced to movie in with his brother in their hometown Shelby County North Carolina. He takes a job as a substitute PE teacher and seems to destory anything and everything he comes into contact with, until he decides to get his crap together.

In the first season there were cameos from Will Ferrel and Craig Robinson plus a recurring role from Ben Best. You cant beat that no matter how hard to try.

Here is the trailer for those of you that arent informed:

Despite Apatow’s Personal Appeal, MPAA Hits ‘Year One’ With an R

year-one

Evidently, Judd Apatow doesn’t have the Spielberg clout when it comes to schmoozing the MPAA on his ratings. Â  Word came down last week that ‘Year One,’ the Apatow-produced, Harold Ramis-directed, caveman comedy starring Jack Black and Michael Cera had acquired an R-rating from the MPAA. Â  This happens more often than you think, but the MPAA generally acquiesces after an appeal or after some minor cuts to the film.

Apatow and Ramis both personally appeared before the MPAA this week to argue against the R-rating.   However, the MPAA stood their ground, and Apatow and Ramis are accepting it.   ‘Year One’ will be released as a R-rated film, the rating being for  “some sexual content and language.”

Now, this is a good thing, and it’s a bad thing if you read between the lines. Â  It’s good that an R-rated comedy is coming out. Â  We’ve had a lot of those over the past couple of years, but filmmakers shouldn’t fear the age-appropriate nature of some of their films. Â  Apatow knows this all too well. Â  His R-rated comedies are making him a ment. Â  So, it’s okay that ‘Year One’ has this rating. Â  It more than likely won’t make any less money than it would have despite.

What isn’t so great about this is the fact that they were clearly trying to get a PG-13 rating attached to the film. Â  That tells me that ‘Year One’ wasn’t a film “going for the R,” it just happened to have enough bad elements to it that made the MPAA think that’s what it deserved.

I guess we’ll see for sure when ‘Year One’ comes out on June 19th.
