Both artists worked together on the Academy Award winning THE ELEPHANT MAN (1980), with Lynch as director and screenwriter and Brooks as executive producer. The AFI Conservatory – named the #1 film school in the world by The Hollywood Reporter – is renowned for its collaborative approach to hands-on filmmaking and its advanced training of the next generation of storytellers in six filmmaking disciplines:  Cinematography, Directing, Editing, Producing, Production Design and Screenwriting.  Previous recipients of the AFI Honorary Degree include Robert Altman, Maya Angelou, Clint Eastwood, Roger Ebert, James Earl Jones,Nora Ephron, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Kathleen Kennedy, John Lasseter, Spike Lee, Helen Mirren, Haskell Wexler and John Williams.

Director, screenwriter, visual artist, composer/musical artist – and AFI Conservatory alumnus – David Lynch (AFI Class of 1970) is known for his darker, dreamlike explorations of American life.  In 1977, his debut, ERASERHEAD – which began as his thesis film while attending AFI Conservatory – premiered at Filmex, the precursor to the American Film Institute’s AFI Fest.  Since then, the award-winning filmmaker has continued to craft some of the world’s most immersive noir dreamscapes, gaining mainstream success and a reputation as an innovator, first with THE ELEPHANT MAN (1980), which earned him the first of two Academy Award nominations, for Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay, and then withTWIN PEAKS, which broke new ground in series television in 1990.  His film works range from sci-fi to crime-drama and include DUNE (1984), BLUE VELVET (1986), TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME (1992), LOST HIGHWAY (1997), THE STRAIGHT STORY (1999), MULHOLLAND DR. (2001) and INLAND EMPIRE (2006).  Lynch returned to AFI Fest in 2010 as its first Guest Artistic Director, where he also created the key art for the festival’s poster.  Lynch also composes music selections for his films and has recorded multiple albums, most recently “Crazy Clown Time,” released in November 2011.  MULHOLLAND DR. was honored by the American Film Institute at AFI Awards 2001 as one of the most outstanding films of the year. BLUE VELVET has been honored by AFI as one of the greatest mysteries of all time and as one of America’s most heart-pounding movies in AFI’s 100 Years…100 Thrills. Also, Frank Booth from BLUE VELVET was ranked among the greatest villains of all time on AFI’s 100 Years…100 Heroes and Villains list.

Among the premier theaters in Los Angeles, 2012 marks the first AFI Commencement at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, which opened in 1927 with the world premiere of Cecil B. DeMille’s biblical epic THE KING OF KINGS and was declared a cultural and historic landmark in 1968.  The renowned exhibition space has been host to numerous premieres, from STAR WARS (1977) to INCEPTION (2010), and has also hosted three Academy Award ceremonies.  Titans of the silver screen from actors such as Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, Jack Nicholson and Elizabeth Taylor to directors including George Lucas andSteven Spielberg have their hand and footprints memorialized in cement in the courtyard of the historic theater.  For the past three years, Grauman’s Chinese has been the exhibition home to AFI Fest – the American Film Institute’s annual celebration of excellence in global cinema – with Hollywood Boulevard lighting up over eight consecutive nights each November with red carpet premieres and screenings that have ranged from A SINGLE MAN (2009) to BLACK SWAN (2010) to J. EDGAR (2011).

Wes Anderson’s MOONRISE KINGDOM Has Record Setting Opening Weekend For Live-Action Film

Focus Features’ Moonrise Kingdom, the critically applauded new movie from director Wes Anderson, opened this past weekend and posted the highest recorded per-theater average for a live-action movie released domestically. Focus CEO James Schamus made the announcement today.

Surpassing the record set for a live-action (e.g., non-animated) feature in a regular theatrical run in December 2006 by Dreamgirls, with its $126,317 opening weekend average at 3 theaters, Moonrise Kingdom this past weekend averaged $130,752 at its 4 theaters for a total gross through yesterday (Sunday) of $523,006.00; the estimated 4-day weekend gross is $669,486.00, for a per-theater average of $167,371.00. Focus’ Brokeback Mountain, released in December 2005, had held the record prior to Dreamgirls. The Dreamgirls record was broken by Moonrise Kingdom in advance of today’s Memorial Day holiday grosses and averages, and therefore reflects an exact 3-day-to-3-day comparison.

Moonrise Kingdom world-premiered earlier this month as the opening-night film of the 2012 Cannes International Film Festival. The theaters currently playing Moonrise Kingdom are, in New York City, AMC Theatres’ Lincoln Square and Regal Cinemas’ Union Square Stadium 14; and, in Los Angeles, Pacific Theatres’ ArcLight Cinemas and Landmark Theatres’ The Landmark. Focus, which holds worldwide rights to the movie, will be adding theaters in additional cities domestically each weekend through June, expanding Moonrise Kingdom to several hundred screens.

Mr. Schamus said, “Moonrise Kingdom is a story of love’s improbable triumph, and for Wes Anderson and his team a labor of love from start to finish. How wonderful it is to congratulate him, on behalf of everyone at Focus, for this remarkable, record-breaking opening.”

Moonrise Kingdom is the new movie directed by two-time Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Wes Anderson (The Royal Tenenbaums, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Rushmore). Set on an island off the coast of New England in the summer of 1965, Moonrise Kingdom tells the story of two 12-year-olds who fall in love, make a secret pact, and run away together into the wilderness. As various authorities try to hunt them down, a violent storm is brewing off-shore – and the peaceful island community is turned upside down in every which way. Bruce Willis plays the local sheriff, Captain Sharp. Edward Norton is a Khaki Scout troop leader, Scout Master Ward. Bill Murray and Frances McDormand portray the young girl’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bishop. The cast also includes Tilda Swinton, Jason Schwartzman, and Bob Balaban; and introduces Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward as the boy and girl. The movie, MPAA-rated “PG-13,” is written by Mr. Anderson & Roman Coppola. The producers are Mr. Anderson, Scott Rudin, Steven Rales, and Jeremy Dawson.

MAN ON A MISSION – The DVD Review

Review by Dane Marti

I’ve always been crazy about space, the planets, astronomy and even spaceships. I love Science Fiction. Part of it is the imaginative element inherent within the genre. However, fiction cannot compare to the incredible experience that real astronauts feel when they have seen the earth or even gone to the moon. Now, that really is a Trip. It must be almost spiritual, changing how you see your own planet, your own existence. Basically, Reality beats fantasy.

“Part of human nature is to reach out and explore”, someone comments early in the documentary MAN ON A MISSION.

As a boy, Richard Garriott was surrounded by conversations outer space. Everyone in his neighborhood worked for NASA and—-His father was an astronaut. Can you imagine going to Grade School and telling your friends, “Well, my dad is an astronaut?” Pretty cool. Like many young boys and girls, Richard also longed for space travel someday. Unfortunately, Richard was nearsighted. Luckily for the viewer, Richard has a swell way in dealing with setbacks.

So, in the early seventies, when still a young man, he became a game designer. He was at the forefront of this pioneering new visual game world played on small, portable computers that would someday be in ubiquitous in every human’s home. Richard worked on many of the first computer graphics and games. AKALABETH was his first game: Friends advised him to sell it, since it was better than most of the games they had in the store: He made 150.00 dollars. Listening to his father’s advice, Richard began investing his money wisely. He had always thought of money in a different way than most of his friends. First, he invested in Spacehab, which basically entailed research involved converting the Space Shuttle into a Space-Age bus. This was all speculation, but the goal was to someday allow private citizens to travel into space! YES!

As he continued to dream, he also designed amazing earlier computer games:
ULTIMA and ULTIMA 2 were some of the first. Richard is now known as the Father of the modern role-playing games.Of course, he was a unique young man. Of course, he also had a knack for making cash, but there were more sides to his character. For instance, he started dressing like one of the characters in his computer role-playing world – a Medieval Lord from one of his games! Besides being a genius, he was also a nerd. The costume looked very authentic and cool, though.
Richard spent his money better than most humans – he traveled down the Amazon, traveled on safaris in Africa, even went perilously deep under the ocean in a submarine to see The Titanic. Maybe some folks might consider him a dork or nerd, but let’s face it – he also had GUTS.

His most extravagant dream remained: To travel into outer space like his good old pop! Then the Internet bubble burst and he lost much of his computer game wealth.
Time passed and he slowly had enough capital to start again. After an operation to see whether his organs could handle space travel (A physical problem was taken care of), he found a group of people that ‘for the right amount of money’ would allow him to fulfill his dream. The Russians came on board. He would buy a 30 million dollar ticket on a Soyuz rocket to outer space and dock with the Space Station. Some of the most harrowing and interesting aspects to the documentary are preparations for the journey into the stars, including Virtual Reality work to simulate outer space, as well as work in a swimming pool to become acclimated in how his body would behave in Zero G.

The film travels to Mother Russia, where Richard begins training at STAR CITY – outside Moscow. Until recently, it had been a very special and mysterious place during The Cold War years. The hardest part of training, Richard and another astronaut agree, is learning the Russian language. Everything must be factored-in for the adventure. All in all, Richard and the other astronauts would spend 12 days in space, orbiting the earth. There are worse ways of spending a few days!
Interesting fact: A human’s spinal cord stretches out in outer space, so a hardened plaster cast of the astronaut is made, creating the form of the perfect space suit, one that fits and, more importantly is technically safe. Watching our hero descend into the plaster is funny; we can tell how uncomfortable that would be, but that is of little concern when the big picture is to survive in space, to deal with the physics of zero gravity.

There are a plethora of great sequences in MAN ON A MISSION. Here is just one: As borderline silly as certain issues pertaining to surviving in space might seem to the average Joe such as myself, they are all massively vital issues that a person in space must deal with or die. For instance, there is a discussion about the importance and necessity in wearing adult diapers within the space suit. It might sound humorous but when you got to go….Another interesting aspect to the film, at least to me, was the cinematography, including shots of the Russian landscape where Richard and the other astronauts prepare. And the astronauts, including Richard, work hard. This isn’t a walk in the park on a Sunday, baby! Unmentioned, but always on the minds of all the scientists, technicians and astronauts is a concern for safety, the desire to get everything right. Always in the back of every man’s mind is the fear that something was missed and this could lead to a catastrophic disaster.

Preparations are set and it is time for the moment of truth. His father, the NASA astronaut, comes to watch as his son goes into space.
For people to do more than just enjoy this film in a dull, uninvolved way, it becomes important that the viewer is engrossed in the human aspect of this true story. Luckily, this film has a great lead subject: Richard seems to be a truly intelligent and nice person.I found the music score to be a little hokey at first, but as I listened, it did take on a subtle, majestic ambiance that never bombarded the listener. The subtle, realistic suspense in watching the rocket launch was poignant, especially with shots of his older father. From the ground, friends shed tears. The rocket explodes upward. The film shifts to zero gravity. We see their food floating in front of the astronauts. Toothpaste seems to have a supernatural mind of its own. Little things like this might sound mundane, but are intriguing.

Of course, although I’ve seen it before, the images of our planet Earth are spectacular. For once, the term awesome applies.

The documentary is conventionally made, but never devolves into a banal educational film. Another high point is when Richard and his Russian astronauts rendezvous with the space station. Once the space capsule and Station dock, there are friendly greetings and conversation. The film contains many warm moments. The Doc. Also contains fantastic attention to detail. In space, Richard must learn to reorient himself. The perception of what constitutes the floor/ what constitutes the ceiling of the station, is seen to be rather unimportant in space. His Sleeping bag is tethered to the floor. Richard also works on research. Because he had laser eye surgery, he does many eye tests. Also, he works with Gyroscopes. He analyzes its spinning– keeping the same general up and down attitude as the Space Station is seen as a way to deal with living and maneuvering craft while in orbit. Wow. He even has time for Art. This was something I wasn’t expecting. Richard uses Microgravity in creating art – ala Jackson Pollock. Another cool moment occurs when he communicates with his father. As his father had done before him, he communicates via a Ham Radio. Richard mentions that, due to natural and human factors, our earth has changed during the period in which his father took shots of the earth surface and later when his son did it as well. Richard talked of the movie Metropolis, how the Space Station interior reminded him of it: The U.S. area is spacious and well lit – almost too sanitary, then passing into the Russia segment of the station, there is a dramatic shift in shadows and equipment. The corridor’s become more enclosed, with technical and practical concerns taking on more importance in this area of the station. For instance, this is the area in which the astronauts shower. Trash is dumped and burns up in the atmosphere.

A moment of humor is when Richard discusses how more research on earth needs to be accomplished in preparing one for using the bathroom in outer space! When Richard and his partners depart from the space station to return to earth, saying goodbye to the friends they have made – Richard said it was more bittersweet than he had expected. Re-entry: Split Screen helps dramatize the suspense and thrill of coming back to earth. The editing becomes more frenzied. We almost feel the abrasive crash as the craft smashes into the earth. The screen fades to black. Did something horrible, something tragic transpire? Then we see still photographs that show the astronauts back on terra firma and celebrating. Having been on many adventures, Richard was surprised how transformative and life changing the space orbit had been. As a document of behavior in outer space, MAN ON A MISSION is literally eye opening, a treat for the entire family. Actually, it is a worthwhile investment of one’s time to watch this documentary, especially if you have spent too much time watching bollocks and crap like American Idol! As for me, I definitely learned a lot. Surprisingly, it wasn’t just the amazing shots from space, but the human element as well that made this a sterling documentary.

MAN ON A MISSION is an outstanding piece of work and a testament to what a single man can do. I’d enjoy meeting Richard in person and shaking his hand. I cannot say enough positive things about this work. It might even make someone consider traveling into space some day. It is that special.

Production Designer Arthur Max Talks PROMETHEUS Movie

Although Ridley Scott has long embraced cinema’s “new tricks and toys,” including computer-generated imagery, he is also known for his belief in filming what he calls “the real thing,” i.e. practical sets.  Indeed, with so many of today’s epic genre films relying heavily on CGI, Prometheus is a rarity: it presents a massive sci-fi world where most of the sets, props and stunts are real. This provides an impressive tactile reality, with one set being more stunning than the next. As one production crew member puts it:  “Ridley built the greatest alien playground in the world.”

The cast and crew were in awe of the efforts of production designer Arthur Max and his team of artisans. “It is hard to overstate the impact of walking on those sets,” says executive producer Michael Ellenberg. “It was inspiring on so many levels. There are so many understated, instinctual things that happen when you are filming on real sets. Everyone behaves in a more natural, organic fashion because it feels like a piece of reality. Every design detail was based on real world reference points, real world ideas, and real world notions. Some of these are fairly lofty notions, but they’re from our world. And if you are looking to scare people and engage with them, viscerally and emotionally, practical sets are the only way to go.”

The production filmed on five stages at Pinewood Studios in the U.K., including the famed “007 Stage” (one of the biggest stages in Europe, at about 59,000 square feet). With studio space at a minimum, the filmmakers had to make five stages work for more than 16 sets, as well as increasing the size of the 007 Stage by at least a third. Principal photography commenced in August 2010, although preliminary work had begun much earlier.

Arthur Max designed not only the spaceships and vehicles but also the landscape of the planet to which the expedition travels, and the structures and spaceship they discover there. For the ship Prometheus, Max says he wanted “to do something that was state-of-the-art, which would represent a flagship spacecraft with every technology required to probe into the deepest corners of the galaxy. We looked at a lot of NASA and European Space Agency designs, and played around with those ideas in the context of what space travel would be like a generation from now.” Max then worked out the ship’s interior architecture and how it would play to the exterior form.

The bridge of the Prometheus is a two tiered set marked by extraordinary attention to detail and dazzling technology, including a gigantic wraparound jewel-like and faceted windscreen fronting the structure. Perhaps the most elaborate set on the Prometheus is Vickers’ quarters, which are more akin to a plush Fifth Avenue apartment than a cabin on an interstellar vehicle. The space is resplendent with designer furnishings both old and new, including a Fazoili piano, Swarovski chandeliers – and a high-tech medical facility featuring a robotic medical pod (Med-pod) that can treat any medical need…or surgical emergency.

The translucent casket-like pod figures in one of the film’s defining sequences, which mixes action, terror and horror in a way never before experienced on film. “What goes on there is simply the worst thing you can (or probably cannot) imagine,” says Rapace.

Other interior sets on the Prometheus include a laboratory, where the crew bring their findings for inspection; the ready room, where the crew get suited up in preparation for their mission; the hyper-sleep barracks, where David monitors the crew during their two year journey to the planet; the mess room, with an amazing array of high-tech equipment; and the space crew’s quarters.

Max’s epic sets that bring to life the alien planet include a Pyramid, which contains the Juggernaut, a ship similar to the crashed crescent shaped ship seen in Alien. Using a series of chambers, corridors and tunnels connecting the larger spaces to each other, and after post-production enhancement, the space is as enormous as the Empire State building. It was so cavernous that some crew lost their bearings.

Outside, on Pinewood’s backlot, Max and his team built the Prometheus Garage, one of three sets that sit beneath the main body of the ship.  The enormous set houses the crew’s vehicles, which the production built from scratch. “We had to create vehicles that could actually be driven on a hostile surface, which is undulating and rocky,” says Max. “We needed transportation that would be industrial enough to deal with these environments but at the same time give us a futuristic characteristic.”  It took eleven weeks to create these robust vehicles, complete with state-of-the-art technology, LED lighting, and padded seats, all presented in a dazzling metallic finish.

After 15 weeks at Pinewood, cast and crew relocated to Iceland to shoot the climactic sequences as well as the prologue. In the town of Hekla, the production captured epic action and thrills – while one of Iceland’s most active volcanoes threatened to erupt. Additional scenes were shot at a spectacular waterfall in Dettifoss.

Director Ridley Scott has created a new mythology, in which a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey, aboard the spaceship Prometheus, to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race from an indigenous race of bio-mechanoid killers. The movie stars Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall-Green, and Charlize Theron.

USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN To Welcome ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER – New Greenband Trailer

20th Century Fox celebrates Memorial Day Weekend in patriotic fashion with the launch of the newest ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER greenband trailer. To coincide with the trailer launch, 20th Century Fox has also announced that it will be screening ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER for thousands of sailors aboard the Navy aircraft carrier, USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN.

Abraham Lincoln, in the guise of actor Benjamin Walker, who portrays the 16th president in the summer movie thriller ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER, and the film’s cast and crew, will visit the sailors serving aboard the Navy aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln in June.

As history’s most beloved U.S. president and, according to the movie, its greatest hunter of the undead, Walker will be joined aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln by co-stars Anthony Mackie and Erin Wasson, as well as by the film’s director Timur Bekmambetov, screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith and producer Jim Lemley. Walker will introduce a special screening of ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER for the thousands of sailors serving on the carrier, and the cast and filmmakers will distribute Lincolnesque tophats, as well as fangs – tools that will help the sailors decide, in the words of one of the film’s promotional taglines, if they’re patriots or vampires.

In addition, the sailors will receive movie tie-in edition books, provided by Grand Central Publishing, and special graphic novels conceived by Bekmambetov.

The cast and filmmakers will screen the film at two additional bases at undisclosed locations.

“We’re very excited that 20th Century Fox and Navy Entertainment wanted to provide ABE’s crew the opportunity to preview the new ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER movie while we’re out here on deployment,” said Capt. John D. Alexander, Commanding Officer of USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72). “We’re extremely fortunate that the studio wants to give us an early showing.  It’s something that we’ve never experienced before on this ship, and we’re extremely grateful for their willingness to share this with our Sailors.”

“This is really exciting for me to meet the ABE’s crew and screen for them our film ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER,” said Benjamin Walker.  “I hope it brings them excitement, goodwill and a taste of home.”

Added the film’s producer Jim Lemley: “We are pleased and proud to have this opportunity to visit with the men and women serving on the USS Abraham Lincoln.  We hope they enjoy our film and know how much everyone in the United States appreciates their service.”

ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER puts down stakes in theaters everywhere June 22, 2012.  The film explores the secret life of our greatest president, and the untold story that shaped our nation. Visionary filmmakers Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov (director of Wanted) bring a fresh and visceral voice to the bloody lore of the vampire, imagining Lincoln as history’s greatest hunter of the undead,

Navy Entertainment, a division of Commander, Navy Installations Command, which operates the Navy’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation program, brings celebrity shows to Sailors deployed around the world for a taste of home.
