Indican Pictures Picks Up Rights To Nika Agiashvili’s A GREEN STORY

Indican Pictures announced today that it has acquired exclusive North American rights to the Van Vlahakis biopic, A GREEN STORY. Indican plans to release the film theatrically in April, 2013. Through the deal, Indican also holds all video, television, ancillary and VOD rights in North America.

From Paramyth Films, A Green Story stars Ed O’Ross, Shannon Elizabeth, Annabella Sciorra, George Finn, Malcolm McDowell, Billy Zane and chronicles the life of Van Vlahakis, a Greek immigrant who arrived in America with only $22 in his pocket and eventually founded the multi-million dollar Green company, Earth Friendly Products.

The movie was written and directed by Paramyth’s Nika Agiashvili and filmed in Los Angeles, Chicago and on location in Greece. Agiashvili produced alongside John Edward Lee, Dimitri Birbilis, Deanna Plascencia and Chadwick Struck. Paramyth’s David Agiashvili served as executive producer.

Nika Agiashvili said, “We are very pleased to be working with Indican on A Green Story. They understand the message of the movie and have a great vision for releasing the film and showcasing it to audiences.”

VP of Indican Pictures, Randolph Kent said, “Indican Pictures is proud to release ‘A Green Story’. A timely film in a decade when corporate greed runs rampant and the concerns of consumers are cast aside. It’s fascinating to see Van Vlahakis stand up for what he believes, take on the powers that be and create safer products for consumers – all the while showing the ‘rags to riches’ tale can be done with honor and dignity.”

The deal was brokered by Glen Reynolds and Zac Reeder from Circus Road Films.

Academy Film Scholar Richard Jewell Revisits RKO Deals, Dynamics During Hollywood’s Golden Age

Academy film scholar Richard B. Jewell, professor of critical studies at the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts, will present highlights from his book RKO Radio Pictures: A Titan Is Born on Tuesday, September 18, at 7:30 p.m. at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood. Jewell’s presentation will be followed by a screening of a production typical of the RKO system, “Bachelor Mother” (1939), starring Ginger Rogers and David Niven, and directed by Garson Kanin. Admission is free.

The complex corporate history of RKO Radio Pictures has often been overshadowed by its cinematic gems, including “King Kong,” “Citizen Kane,” its sparkling screwball comedies and the Astaire-Rogers musicals.

With his rigorous scholarship and unparalleled access to original studio materials, Jewell has documented the business side of the studio’s distinctive and often turbulent story, from its formation in 1929 through 1942. In addition to offering insights into the making of some of Hollywood’s most enduring classics, Jewell will provide case studies of film industry management during the volatile years of the Depression and the lead-up to World War II.

Established in 1999, the Academy Film Scholars program is designed to stimulate and support the creation of new and significant works of film scholarship about aesthetic, cultural, educational, historical, theoretical or scientific aspects of theatrical motion pictures. Film scholars receive $25,000 to research and produce such works, which can take the form of books, multimedia presentations, curatorial projects, DVDs or Internet sites.

For grant guidelines and information about the Academy Film Scholars program, visit http://www.oscars.org/education-outreach/grants/filmscholars/index.html.

Admission to the Academy Film Scholars presentation is free, but tickets are required. Tickets are available by mail, at the Academy box office (8949 Wilshire Boulevard, Beverly Hills), or online at www.oscars.org. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Ticketed seating is unreserved.

Rosamund Pike and Christopher Plummer Join Simon Pegg In HECTOR AND THE SEARCH FOR HAPPINESS Cast

Rosamund Pike (AN EDUCATION, JOHNNY ENGLISH REBORN, CLASH OF THE TITANS) and Academy Award Winner Christopher Plummer (BEGINNERS, THE LAST STATION, THE IMAGINARIUM OF DR. PARNASSUS) have joined the cast of director Peter Chelsom’s upcoming drama comedy HECTOR AND THE SEARCH FOR HAPPINESS in which Simon Pegg (MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE -GHOST PROTOCOL, PAUL) will play the lead. The announcement was made by producers Judy Tossell of Egoli Tossell Film (THE LAST STATION, CARLOS, BLACK DEATH) and Christine Haebler of Screen Siren Pictures (HARD CORE LOGO, DAYDREAM NATION, FOREVERLAND). The Solution Entertainment Group (“The Solution”) is handling international rights to the film and will be selling to buyers in Toronto; United Talent Agency are representing US rights.

Adapted for the screen from the bestselling novel of the same name by François Lelord, the film is a German/Canadian co-production produced by Egoli Tossell Film and Screen Siren Pictures currently in pre-production and set to shoot in January 2013. Wild Bunch Germany are co-producing and distributing in German-speaking Europe and Entertainment One have acquired all rights for Canada.

Simon Pegg plays Hector, an eccentric yet irresistible London psychiatrist in crisis: he’s going nowhere and his patients are just not getting any happier! Until one day, armed with buckets of courage and child-like curiosity, Hector breaks out of his sheltered vacuum of a life into a global quest to find out if happiness exists. More importantly, if it exists for Hector. And so begins an exotic, dangerous and hysterical journey.

Rosamund Pike has been cast as Hector’s long-term girlfriend, CLARA. English-born Pike shot to fame in 2002 as Bond Girl Miranda Frost in DIE ANOTHER DAY. This was followed by a slew of roles such as PROMISED LAND (2004) and THE LIBERTINE (2004), (for which she won the Best Supporting Actress award at The British Independent Film Awards), and Jane Bennett in PRIDE AND PREJUDICE. It was her exceptional performances in: AN EDUCATION (2009), MADE IN DAGENHAM (2010), and the lead opposite Paul Giamatti in BARNEY’S VERSION (2010) that cemented her reputation as one of the top British actresses of her generation. As she continued her stage work in England, Pike appeared in the spy spoof JOHNNY ENGLISH REBORN (2011) and inhabited the role of Andromeda in the sci-fi epic CLASH OF THE TITANS (2012). She has since returned to action films with the female lead opposite Tom Cruise in JACK REACHER (2012).

Christopher Plummer will appear as Professor Coreman, leading guru for Happiness Studies at UCLA. Plummer’s 60-year acting career includes many hits on stage, in movies and on TV, plus an Oscar win at age 82, but he may still be best known for the role of the stormy Captain Georg von Trapp in the 1965 movie THE SOUND OF MUSIC. He has been nominated seven times for a Tony Award, winning twice. He has twice won Emmy Awards and was finally nominated for an Academy Award for his performance as Russian author Leo Tolstoy in the 2009 film THE LAST STATION; in 2012 he won the Academy Award as best supporting actor for his role in the film BEGINNERS.

Simon Pegg shot to international fame following his stand out performances in SHAUN OF THE DEAD, STAR TREK, HOT FUZZ, PAUL and most recently MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – GHOST PROTOCOL opposite Tom Cruise reprising his role from MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE III and Thompson in Steven Spielberg’s THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN. Pegg is currently in post production on the next STAR TREK movie currently untitled and in pre-production on Edgar Wright’s THE WORLD’S END.

British-born Chelsom began his directing career with break out British films HEAR MY SONG and FUNNY BONES. These were followed by a string of romantic, feelgood hits including SERENDIPITY starring John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale, SHALL WE DANCE? starring Richard Gere and the award-winning THE MIGHTY starring Sharon Stone. His last two films SHALL WE DANCE? and HANNAH MONTANA: THE MOVIE enjoyed a combined worldwide box office of over US$ 325m.

This will be Chelsom’s third film with Academy Award winning costume designer Lindy Hemming (TOPSY TURVY, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, CASINO ROYALE). Award winning director of photography Hagen Bogdanski is also set to join the filmmaking team. His credits include the Academy Award winning THE LIVES OF OTHERS, YOUNG VICTORIA and Madonna’s W.E.

In the mountains of Franklin County, Virginia, the Bondurant brothers are the stuff of legend. The eldest, Howard (Jason Clarke), managed to survive the carnage of the Great War, but he returned home unmoored by what he had seen and done. His brother Forrest (Tom Hardy) nearly died from the
Spanish Flu that took his parents. He beat back death with a quiet strength and ferocious, visceral invincibility that came to define him. Jack (Shia LaBeouf) is the youngest sibling, impressionable, sensitive, smart. Times are tough and jobs are scarce, but the Bondurants are entrepreneurs and have
built a thriving local business by concocting an intense and popular brand of moonshine. But Franklin County’s bootlegging days are about to end with the arrival of Special Deputy Charlie Rakes (Guy Pearce) from Chicago. The new “law” Rakes brings is lethal and corrupt and will challenge everything
the brothers have built and represent. But while the rest of the county gives in to Rakes’ ruthless crackdown, the Bondurants will bow to no one.

As the family rallies to fight Rakes, the fraternal dynamic shifts. Jack’s ambitions and enterprises alter the balance of power between the brothers as he careens into manhood. Dreaming of expensive suits, fast cars and beautiful women, Jack starts his own bootlegging operation, with his friend Cricket (Dane DeHaan) helping him to soup up cars and build stills – even against Forrest’s wishes. Jack starts to prosper, even selling his moonshine to Floyd Banner (Gary Oldman), the big city gangster he idolizes. The lives of the Bondurants are soon complicated by the appearance of two beautiful women: the exotic, steadfast Maggie (Jessica Chastain), who brings a secret past with her and catches the eye of the guarded Forrest – and the quiet, pious Bertha (Mia Wasikowska), who slowly warms to Jack’s charms and channels her own rebellious streak.

Jack’s confidence however soon trumps his good sense, and the consequences will test the brothers’  loyalty and endangers them all. Determined to do whatever is necessary to fight for what is theirs, the Bondurants take up arms and confront the corrupt forces of the law in a faceoff to determine who
controls the wettest county in the world.

TEXAS CHAINSAW 3D New Image – In Theaters January 4, 2013

TEXAS CHAINSAW 3D’s Leatherface is back and more terrifying than ever. You’ve seen his many evil faces and now you can see him with weapon in hand! Check out this new TEXAS CHAINSAW 3D photo.

Lionsgate’s TEXAS CHAINSAW 3D continues the legendary story of the homicidal Sawyer family, picking up where Tobe Hooper’s 1974 horror classic left off in Newt, Texas, where for decades people went missing without a trace.  The townspeople long suspected the Sawyer family, owners of a local barbeque pit, were somehow responsible.  Their suspicions were finally confirmed one hot summer day when a young woman escaped the Sawyer house following the brutal murders of her four friends.  Word around the small town quickly spread, and a vigilante mob of enraged locals surrounded the Sawyer stronghold, burning it to the ground and killing every last member of the family – or so they thought.

Decades later and hundreds of miles away from the original massacre, a young woman named Heather learns that she has inherited a Texas estate from a grandmother she never knew she had.  After embarking on a road trip with friends to uncover her roots, she finds she is the sole owner of a lavish, isolated Victorian mansion. But her newfound wealth comes at a price as she stumbles upon a horror that awaits her in the mansion’s dank cellars.

With gruesome surprises in store for a whole new generation, TEXAS CHAINSAW 3D stars Alexandra Daddario (Heather Miller) and Dan Yeager (Leatherface), Introducing Tremaine ‘Trey Songz’ Neverson (Ryan), Scott Eastwood (Carl), Tania Raymonde (Nikki), Shaun Sipos (Darryl), Keram Malicki-Sanchez (Kenny), James MacDonald (Officer Marvin), Thom Barry (Sheriff Hooper), Paul Rae (Burt Hartman), Richard Riehle (Farnsworth) along with special appearances from four beloved cast members from previous installments of the franchise: Gunnar Hansen (the original Leatherface), Marilyn Burns, John Dugan and Bill Moseley.

Directed by John Luessenhop, from a screenplay by Adam Marcus & Debra Sullivan and Kirsten Elms, based on a story by Stephen Susco and Adam Marcus & Debra Sullivan and based on characters created by Kim Henkel and Tobe Hooper, and produced by Carl Mazzocone. Lionsgate presents a Millennium Films production and Main Line Pictures production.

Jeffrey Katzenberg, Hal Needham, D.A. Pennebaker, George Stevens, Jr. To Receive The Academy’s Governors Awards

The Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences voted tonight to present Honorary Awards to stunt performer Hal Needham, documentarian D. A. Pennebaker and arts advocate George Stevens, Jr., and the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award to philanthropist Jeffrey Katzenberg. All four awards will be presented at the Academy’s 4th Annual Governors Awards dinner on Saturday, December 1, at The Ray Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland Center®.

Hal Needham is a legendary stunt performer and coordinator who has worked on more than 300 feature films including “The Spirit of St. Louis,” “How the West Was Won,” “Blazing Saddles,” “Little Big Man” and “Chinatown.” A pioneer in improving stunt technology and safety procedures, Needham also co-founded Stunts Unlimited, and is known for mentoring young stunt performers. In 1986, the Academy presented Needham with a Scientific and Engineering Award for the design and development of the Shotmaker Elite camera car and crane, which allows filmmakers greater versatility in shooting action sequences. Needham made his directorial debut with Smokey and the Bandit. He went on to direct such features as “Hooper” and the “Cannonball Run” films.

D. A. Pennebaker, a pioneer of modern nonfiction film, has directed more than 20 feature-length documentaries, including “Don’t Look Back,” “Monterey Pop,” “Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars,” “Moon over Broadway,” “Kings of Pastry” and “The War Room,” for which he received an Oscar® nomination. During his career of more than six decades, Pennebaker has inspired generations of filmmakers with his “you are here” style. He is considered one of the founders of the cinéma vérité movement, beginning with his collaboration on the seminal 1960 film “Primary.”

George Stevens, Jr. has spent a lifetime celebrating and preserving the heritage of motion pictures. After several years at the United States Information Agency, where he championed the work of young documentary filmmakers and was Oscar-nominated for producing the documentary short subject “The Five Cities of June,” Stevens went on to become the founding director of the American Film Institute. Under his leadership, the AFI established the Center for Advanced Film Studies, created the AFI Life Achievement Award and embarked on a host of educational initiatives. In 1977, Stevens co-founded the Kennedy Center Honors, which he has produced for the past 34 years.

A studio executive, film producer and philanthropist, Jeffrey Katzenberg has been instrumental in raising money for education, art and health-related causes, particularly those benefiting the motion picture industry. During more than two decades as chairman of the board for the Motion Picture and Television Fund, he helped to raise $200 million for the organization, created “The Night Before” event and worked to expand the MPTF campus. He also serves on the boards of such organizations as the California Institute of the Arts, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, AIDS Project Los Angeles, the Geffen Playhouse, The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, the Simon Wiesenthal Center and the USC School of Cinematic Arts. Katzenberg currently serves as CEO of DreamWorks Animation.

The Honorary Award, an Oscar statuette, is given to an individual for “extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences, or for outstanding service to the Academy.”

The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, an Oscar statuette, is given to an individual in the motion picture industry whose humanitarian efforts have brought credit to the industry.

The Governors Awards presentation will be produced for the Academy by marketing executive Cheryl Boone Isaacs with the Don Mischer Production team led by Don Mischer, Charlie Haykel and Juliane Hare.
