HATCHETIIIteaserposter-590x911

Hope you’re finished with lunch, because the new red band trailer for HATCHET III is filled with some gory, gruesome scenes. Enjoy.

Victor Crowley lives! Just a few short weeks after HATCHET II hit home video and literally sold off the shelves faster than the major retailers could stock it, a third installment was green-lit by Dark Sky Films and ArieScope Pictures.

Danielle Harris and Kane Hodder return for the next film in the now bona fide worldwide HATCHET franchise which finds a search and recovery team heading into the haunted Louisiana swamp to pick up the pieces of the first two films and “Marybeth” (Harris) seeking out the secret to ending the voodoo curse that has kept the paranormal entity of “Victor Crowley” (Hodder) haunting and terrorizing Honey Island Swamp for decades.

Also starring Zach Galligan (GREMLINS, WAXWORK), Derek Mears (FRIDAY THE 13th, PREDATORS), Caroline Williams (THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE PART 2), Rileah Vanderbilt (HATCHET 1 & 2), Sean Whalen (THE PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS, MEN IN BLACK), Diane Goldner (FEAST, THE COLLECTOR), and Cody Blue Snider (A&E’s GROWING UP TWISTED).

Written and produced by Adam Green and directed by BJ McDonnell, HATCHET III will be in select theaters June 14.

TFF 2013: Putting The “I” In Film

Tribeca Talks sign

This post will also act as my daily recap for April 20th since it is the only Tribeca event I attended on Saturday. The one screening I had access to that I really wanted to attend was MR. JONES but since that was just picked up by Anchor Bay, I’ll have another chance soon enough. Instead I decided to check out one of the screenwriting panels that I always end up missing.

Tribeca Talks Panel

PUTTING THE “I” IN FILM was billed as a conversation about putting yourself into your films. In that sense it was an accurate description but I would have liked a little more discussion about screenwriting since that is what the Pen To Paper series of Tribeca Talks is usually about. Screen International’s Mark Adams moderated the panel with Tribeca filmmakers Banker White (THE GENIUS OF MARIAN), Tom Berninger (MISTAKEN FOR STRANGERS) and Amy Grantham (LILY). GASLAND PART II director Josh Fox was a no show.

Tribeca Talks Posed

There were quite a few interesting topics brought up related to bringing yourself into your film and becoming the subject of your own work. Rather than paraphrase, I decided to keep them in front of the camera by filming the first 25 minutes of the panel. Everyone contributes something interesting to the talk but I was most fascinated by Tom Berninger’s views on his film and his relationship with his brother. I will definitely be checking out MISTAKEN FOR STRANGERS, which also happened to be the opening night film. Check out their discussion below…

TFF 2013 DAILY RECAP: Friday April 19th

Tribeca Coverage Logo

I want to start off by apologizing for the delay in my coverage this year. I thought I’d get everything written & posted sooner this year since I was actually staying in the city but I have been getting back to the room exhausted every day. I am taking the next few days off from the festival to catch up and watch a few more of the films available in the online screening room. But before I get to that, let’s start at the beginning…

TFF press lounge

As always, my first experience of the Tribeca Film Festival was picking up my press badge at the Cadillac Press Lounge. It also doesn’t matter how early it is, this experience is always marked by my first of hopefully many free Magnum Ice Cream bars. After browsing the tables for film postcards / fliers, which there were practically none, I made my way over to Clearview Cinemas Chelsea for my first screening.

tff almost christmas

ALMOST CHRISTMAS is almost a good movie. I know that seems like a pretty easy jab but the film actually opens itself up to it quite well. With everything going for this production, especially the fantastic casting of Paul Rudd & Paul Giamatti, this film could have (and should have) been so much more. My expectations probably had a lot to do with my level of enjoyment but in the end, if this really was meant to be a comedy, it simply is not funny.

Following my first screening (and first major disappointment) of the festival, I randomly bumped into Alan LaFave of the Hells Half Mile Film + Music Festival in the theater lobby. I had seen him the last two years at Tribeca so we hung out for a little to catch up. Now that I am a board member for the Orlando Film Festival (Submissions open NOW), we talked a bit about running a smaller festival as compared to TFF. Afterward, I made my way to the next screening.

TFF Adult World

ADULT WORLD was the most packed I have ever seen a Tribeca press/industry screening. While ALMOST CHRISTMAS was a disappointment because of the quality compared to the cast involved, this film was quite the opposite. ADULT WORLD is a good film mainly because of all the talent involved. It is easy to see how this could have been a mess or at least far less interesting had it not been for the fantastic performances and great skill behind the camera. ADULT WORLD may not be the most original coming of age story but it is a satisfying and darkly funny film.

TFF Clearview

Outside the theater I again bumped into Alan LaFave. These random meetings may give the illusion of TFF being a small intimate gathering but I promise the festival is actually spread out all around Manhattan (and ironically mostly outside of the Tribeca area). We both decided to check out the RIDER AND THE STORM premiere party a few blocks away at SPIN NYC. Despite Olivia Wilde’s name being plastered all over my invite, I did not see her in attendance but there were a lot of really nice and fascinating people that I did get to meet. One of them being Bryn Mooser, co-director of RIDER AND THE STORM and co-founder of RYOT.ORG. I have not had a chance yet to view his film but I hope that changes before the end of the festival. I left the party after about 90 minutes, thus ending my first day at TFF 2013.

John Woo’s WWII FLYING TIGERS To Be 2-Pt Feature And Six-Hr Television Miniseries

FLYING TIGERS 2
Terence Chang, John Woo, Charlie Coker, Frank Botman, Han Sanping, Zhao Haicheng, Miao Xiaotian and Deng Meng (Director of contracts & cooperation China Film Co.)

Dutch-based strategic investment boutique Cyrte Investments and China Film Co., Ltd.  are teaming with legendary action director John Woo (Face Off, Red Cliff, Mission Impossible II) on Flying Tigers, a feature film and six-hour television drama miniseries about a group of American pilots who volunteered to fight under the Chinese flag alongside their Chinese counterparts during WWII.

The project will be a two-part feature film released theatrically in greater China, and additionally crafted into a six-hour television drama miniseries for distribution in the rest of the world.  The announcement was made today during the Beijing International Film Festival at a signing ceremony attended by Cyrte CEO Frank Botman, CFG Chairman Han Sanping and John Woo.

The epic action drama tells the legendary story of the Flying Tigers, a heroic band of American pilots who volunteered to join the Chinese Air Force and fight Japanese aggression at the onset of World War II.  Known as the “Flying Tigers” due to the iconic shark’s teeth painted on their fighter planes, the team played an integral role in holding the line against imperial Japan in the early days of the war.  Although outnumbered and often ill-equipped, the Flying Tigers valiantly staved off numerous Japanese attacks in China and Southeast Asia. Flying Tigers is a compelling story of international friendship and heroism between American and Chinese servicemen who perilously fought side-by-side in a time of need.

Woo is expected to begin principal photography for Flying Tigers in early 2014.

Woo and his producing partner, Terence Chang, will produce the films and TV miniseries under their Lion Rock Productions banner.  Woo said “Flying Tigers is a project that I have always wanted to do, because this is a story that expresses the courage, resourcefulness, friendship, and spirit of both the Chinese and American people and pilots.  It promotes friendship between the two nations.  I am extremely grateful to China Film Co., Ltd. and Cyrte Investments for giving me this opportunity, and I will definitely put forth my greatest efforts.”

“We are honored to be working with John Woo, one of the preeminent Chinese directors of our time, and the fabulous team at China Film Co., Ltd., led by Mr. Han Sanping,” said Mr. Botman of Cyrte, who added “This is Woo’s passion project and we could not conceive of anyone more perfect to tell the story of the Flying Tigers.  Like Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers, this heroic story of Chinese and American cooperation and their struggles in WWII needs to be retold to a new generation.”

Mr. Han of CFG added:  “China Film Co., Ltd., as the biggest film development, production and distribution company in China, was fully engaged in the cooperation with John Woo and Terence Chang at the initial stage of the development of Flying Tigers.  We have high hopes for Flying Tigers, which is no doubt one of the most important films for CFG in recent years.  We believe that the collaboration between CFG, John Woo, Terence Chang, and Cyrte Investments allows us to showcase the charm of Chinese made films in a more diversified and appealing way to the global audience.”

Cyrte will work with its portfolio company Exclusive Media, the leading production company for independent Hollywood films, to assist with the project.

Lion Rock Productions was formed in 1998 by director John Woo and his producing partner Terence Chang. Their partnership dates back to Hong Kong where they produced such films as Hard Boiled and The Killer.  Feature film credits include Hard Target for Universal, Broken Arrow for Twentieth Century Fox, Mission: Impossible II andFace/Off for Paramount Pictures. Credits under the Lion Rock banner include PaycheckWindtalkersBulletproof MonkThe Big HitBlood BrothersMy Fair GentlemanReign of Assassins, and the blockbuster hit Red Cliff. Television credits include Red Skies,The Robinsons: Lost in Space and the animated project Appleseed: Ex Machina.

Matthew McConaughey Drama DALLAS BUYERS CLUB Acquired By Focus Features

dallasbuyersclub_{0427ef40-c52d-e211-a8d1-d4ae527c3b65}

DALLAS BUYERS CLUB, currently in post-production, has been acquired by Focus Features for domestic theatrical release in the second half of 2013. The company has also acquired Latin American rights to the feature. Focus CEO James Schamus and Focus president Andrew Karpen made the announcement today.

A Truth Entertainment production, DALLAS BUYERS CLUB is produced by Robbie Brenner and Rachel Winter. Spirit Award winner Matthew McConaughey stars in the fact-based drama for director Jean-Marc Vallée (The Young Victoria). The film’s original screenplay is by Craig Borten and Melissa Wallack.

In DALLAS BUYERS CLUB, McConaughey portrays real-life Texas electrician Ron Woodroof, an ordinary man who found himself in a life-or-death battle with the medical establishment and pharmaceutical companies. In 1986, Ron was blindsided by being diagnosed as HIV-positive and given 30 days to live. With the U.S. still internally divided over how to combat the virus and restricting medications, Ron grabbed hold of non-toxic alternative treatments from all over the world by means both legal and illegal. Seeking to avoid government sanctions against selling non-approved medicines and supplements, he established a “buyers club,” which fellow HIV-positive people could join for access to his supplies.

The cast of DALLAS BUYERS CLUBalso includes Gotham Independent Film Award winner Jared Leto and Golden Globe Award winner Jennifer Garner. The movie’s executive producers are Truth Entertainment’s Tony Notargiacomo and Joe Newcomb; Nicholas Chartier; Cassian Elwes; Logan Levy; Nathan Ross; and Holly Wiersma.

Mr. Schamus and Mr. Karpen commented, “Matthew McConaughey is an actor at the top of his game, and he incarnates Ron Woodroof by showing how his self-interest was galvanized into something much more. Audiences will want to take this journey with him, Jared Leto, and Jennifer Garner, as guided by their dynamic director Jean-Marc Vallée.”

Mr. Vallée said, “I’m extremely pleased that we are partnered with Focus Features. They have a long and successful history of sharing memorable stories. Ron Woodroof’s story is one of an imperfect man and his fight for survival, during a confused and desperate time. We all believe that this film had to finally be made, and we are all grateful and privileged to be part of this project.”

The current and upcoming Focus Features slate includes Derek Cianfrance’s drama The Place Beyond the Pines, starring Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, and Eva Mendes; The World’s End, the third installment of Edgar Wright’s trilogy of comedies starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost; Closed Circuit, the suspense thriller directed by John Crowley and starring Eric Bana and Rebecca Hall; the true-life dramatic thriller Kill the Messenger, to be directed by Michael Cuesta and star Jeremy Renner; and the comedic fable The Boxtrolls, the new animated feature from LAIKA, directed by Anthony Stacchi and Graham Annable with a voice cast that includes Ben Kingsley, Toni Collette, Elle Fanning, Isaac Hempstead-Wright, and Tracy Morgan.
