Watch The New Trailer For Spike Jonze’s HER

Writer/director Spike Jonze brings his distinct style and insight to this modern relationship story, HER, a film that takes an unconventional look at the nature of love. Here’s a look at the brand new trailer.

Set in Los Angeles in the slight future, HER follows Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix), a complex, soulful man who makes his living writing touching, personal letters for other people. Heartbroken after the end of a long relationship, he becomes intrigued with a new, advanced operating system, which promises to be an intuitive and unique entity in its own right.

Upon initiating it, he is delighted to meet “Samantha,” a bright, female voice (Scarlett Johansson) who is insightful, sensitive and surprisingly funny. As her needs and desires grow, in tandem with his own, their friendship deepens into an eventual love for each other.

From the singular perspective of Oscar-nominated filmmaker Spike Jonze comes HER, an original love story that explores the evolving nature-and the risks-of intimacy in the modern world.

Written and directed by Jonze, the romantic drama stars Oscar nominee Joaquin Phoenix (“The Master,” “Walk the Line,” “Gladiator”), Oscar nominee Amy Adams (“The Master,” “Doubt”), Oscar nominee Rooney Mara (“The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo”), Olivia Wilde, and Scarlett Johansson.

The idea for HER had been simmering with Jonze for years. “The initial spark,” he recalls, “was an article I saw online about 10 years ago, about instant-messaging with an artificial intelligence. I linked to it and I said ‘Hello,’ and it said ‘Hello.’ ‘How are you?’ ‘Good. How are you?’ We had a little exchange and there was an initial buzz of, ‘Wow, I’m talking to this thing, this thing is listening to me,’ and then the illusion quickly dissolved and I could tell it was parroting what it had heard before and it wasn’t intelligent, it was just a clever program. But that initial buzz was exciting. Eventually I thought about the idea of a man who’s having a relationship with an entity like that, but a fully formed consciousness, and what could happen, and used that as a way to imagine this love story.”

“There are lots of ideas here about technology and the world we live in, the isolation that it can create as well as the connections it creates, and the way we’re changing as a society,” says Jonze. “But as I was writing the story, I always ended up putting those themes in the background. The high concept always takes a back seat to the relationship between Theodore and Samantha. Every scene is based in their reality as a couple. We wanted to look at it as a relationship between two individuals and, through them, make a story that looked at love and relationships as complexly and from as many angles as possible.

“I wanted to touch on some of the needs and fears, the judgments and expectations we bring into a relationship; the things we don’t want to acknowledge, or things we pretend we don’t need, but need anyway; the ways in which we connect with each other, or try to connect and fail,” he continues. “We want to be known, but at the same time, are afraid of being known.

“Samantha was created to evolve,” he says. “And once she’s set in motion, like once we’re all set in motion, there’s no limit to where that’s going to take us and who we’re going to become. If you fall in love with someone, that’s the risk you take.”

HER will open in limited release on December 18, 2013 in New York, Los Angeles and Toronto, and go wide on January 10, 2014.

This film has been rated R for language, sexual content and brief graphic nudity.

Watch The Live Stream of Ben Stiller’s Handprint-Footprint Ceremony at the TCL Chinese Theater NOW

THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY

It’s a big day for Walter Mitty!

Tune in to the live stream of Ben Stiller’s Handprint-Footprint Ceremony at the TCL Chinese Theater NOW and watch Tom Cruise introduce Ben Stiller as he receives this incredible honor.

Stiller stars and directs 20th Century Fox’s upcoming feature film, THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY, which opens Dec. 25, 2013.

Check out the exclusive footage from the movie below.

No one really knows the power of the private dreams inside our heads  . . . until they inspire our reality.  That’s what happens in Ben Stiller’s contemporary rethink of one of the most influential fantasy stories of all time – indeed the quintessential tale about the irresistible allure of fantasizing: James Thurber’s THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY.  Stiller has taken that two-and-a-half page 1939 classic and opened it up into a 21st Century comic epic about a man who finds that his real life is about to blow his wildly over-active imagination out of the water.

This Walter Mitty (Stiller) is a modern day-dreamer, an ordinary magazine photo editor who takes a regular mental vacation from his ho-hum existence by disappearing into a world of fantasies electrified by dashing heroism, passionate romance and constant triumphs over danger.  But when Mitty and the co-worker he secretly adores (Kristen Wiig) stand in actual peril of losing their jobs, Walter must do the unimaginable:  take real action – sparking a global journey more extraordinary than anything he could have ever dreamed up.

Starring Ben Stiller, Kristen Wiig, Shirley MacLaine, Adam Scott, Kathryn Hahn, and Sean Penn, THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY  will be in theaters December 25th.

BIRTH OF THE LIVING DEAD – The DVD Review

birth-header

Review by Michael Haffner

There’s no question that George A. Romero’s 1968 film NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD gave birth to the modern zombie. No, we’re not talking about voodoo mysticism or Caribbean folklore which is where the idea of dead men rising from their graves at night stems from. What I’m referring to are the shambling, gut-munching, zombies who come back to life as rotting corpses. There’s no shortage of the “z-word” in pop culture these days as films, books, and television shows have all explored the subject. This is in large part due to one gory black and white indie film. With a budget of $114,000 and a script by Romero and John A. Russo, a horror film that tapped into the social conscience of the late 1960’s and still remains relevant to this day was born.

birth2 copy

Director Rob Kuhns guides BIRTH OF THE LIVING DEAD along in a smooth and sensible manner. He begins the film with a look at George A. Romero’s life in Pittsburgh as a struggling filmmaker. There are some humorous anecdotes from Romero’s early career including his work on Mr. Rogers, beer commercials, and a FANTASTIC VOYAGE knock-off commercial called THE CALGON STORY that truly is fantastic. What helps give the film a creative edge is the inclusion of beautifully rendered black and white drawings depicting the behind the scenes of these early cinematic years as well as the making of Romero’s classic dead film. While the artwork by Gary Pullin is stunning, I get the feeling that they stand in place of any real interviews with the cast and crew describing the filmmaking process. George is the only one who speaks at great length about the production. Several names are discussed and what there responsibilities entailed, however we never hear from these extras, assistants, and actors. Most obvious among those missing is of course fellow writer John A Russo. This is especially disconcerting since there has been a few different accounts over the years of the different forms the original script took on, who re-wrote what, and if the political subtext was always “meant” or “intended” to be there. As someone who has listened firsthand to both men speak at screenings and festivals – never together of course – I can promise you a debate for the ages could be had. BIRTH’S saving grace of course is Romero’s openness in front of the camera. His easy smile and jovial personality is a joy to watch, and his love for the subject of zombies can be felt through the screen. Of course he has told these same stories over the years for other documentaries and featurettes that have popped up on the endless array of home video releases; after all these years not a whole lot has changed.

birth3

Gale Anne Hurd (ALIENS producer), Larry Fessenden (director of HABIT), Jason Zinoman (writer of SHOCK VALUE), and Elvis Mitchell (renowned film critic) are just some of the talking heads who dissect the importance of NOTLD. Each one shares their personal connection with the film. There’s no debating the cultural impact the film has had on these individuals and on the film community as a whole, but the link between NOTLD and the Vietnam War as well as the Civil Rights movement has been addressed ad nauseam over the years that the statements made here are far from groundbreaking. To those new to the horror genre, BIRTH OF THE LIVING DEAD does provide some insight into a film that is considered by many as one of the best horror films ever made. For some seasoned scare veterans, the novelty of seeing respected names like Hurd and Fessenden discuss the film may or may not be enough to make this a watch if you have already seen other docs like ONE FOR THE FIRE.

night_of_the_living_dead_3

George Romero can go on with the rest of his life and never make another seminal film to add to his career. Some would say he has done exactly that for over 25 years now. BIRTH OF THE LIVING DEAD is not without its merits, but taking yet another look at Romero’s first dead film isn’t as eye-popping as it would be to see a new horror film from the iconic director. At the very least, this documentary serves as a nice reminder to revisit an often imitated but never duplicated classic.
