Following the exclusive Fathom Events preview on November 13, ROSEWATER will be in theaters nationwide on November 14.

A true story, ROSEWATER marks the screenwriting and directorial debut of “The Daily Show” host and executive producer Jon Stewart, and stars Gael García Bernal, leading an international cast.  Rosewater is produced by Scott Rudin, Stewart and Gigi Pritzker, with Lila Yacoub, Eli Bush and Chris McShane serving as executive producers.

ROSEWATER has a direct connection to Stewart, who since taking over as host of Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” in 1999, has turned the nightly half-hour satirical look at newsmakers and news-coverers into not only a perennial Emmy-winning juggernaut, but also an important touchstone on the zeitgeist. Stewart and “The Daily Show” covered Bahari’s saga nightly and the journalist appeared on the show to talk about his ordeal once he was released from prison.

ROSEWATER follows the Tehran-born Bahari, a 42-year-old broadcast journalist with Canadian citizenship living in London. In June 2009, Bahari returned to Iran to interview Mir-Hossein Mousavi, who was the prime challenger to controversial incumbent president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.  As Moussavi’s supporters rose up to protest Ahmadinejad’s victory declaration hours before the polls closed on election day, Bahari endured great personal risk by submitting camera footage of the unfolding street riots to the BBC. Bahari was soon arrested by Revolutionary Guard police, led by a man identifying himself only as “Rosewater,” who proceeded to torture and interrogate the journalist over the next 118 days. In October 2009, with Bahari’s wife leading an international campaign from London to have her husband freed, and Western media outlets including “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” continuing to keep the story alive, Iranian authorities released Bahari on $300,000 bail and the promise he would act as a spy for the government.

Rosewater has been celebrated by early festival audiences as well as critics,” said Tom Ortenberg, CEO of Open Road Films. “Moviegoers have expressed incredible enthusiasm about the upcoming release of Jon Stewart’s directorial debut and we are thrilled to be able to bring this special event with two icons to theaters across the country.”

BBC Worldwide North America Acquires Director John Boorman’s Final Film QUEEN AND COUNTRY

QUEEN AND COUNTRY

BBC Worldwide North America announced today the acquisition of QUEEN AND COUNTRY, the latest film by five-time Academy Award nominated director and writer John Boorman (Hope and Glory, Excalibur, The General, Deliverance), securing all rights in North America.

The film, which Boorman has announced will be his last, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2014 and was acquired after making its North American debut during Film Comment’s special screening at the 52nd New York Film Festival earlier this month.

QUEEN AND COUNTRY introduces Callum Turner (Ripper Street, Borgias) to the big screen and also stars one of Variety’s  “Top 10 Actors to Watch” Caleb Landry Jones (X-Men: First Class), David Thewlis (War Horse, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban) and Vanessa Kirby (About Time).  Featuring cinematography from Seamus Deasy (Neverland, When the Sky Falls) and set design by Academy Award nominee Anthony Pratt (The Phantom of the Opera, The Man with the Iron Mask), the film is a follow-up to Boorman’s semi-autobiographical Academy Award nominated film HOPE AND GLORY. It received 5 Oscar nominations and is still one of the best WWII movies about the British homefront.

“I am very pleased that the ace team at BBC Worldwide North America will be taking Queen and Country to the U.S. audience. Hope and Glory was based on my childhood memories of the London Blitz in World War Two,” says Boorman. “This one draws on my experience at 18 of conscription in the army where I trained young lads to fight in the Korean War. The military was both brutal and comic. I discovered that falling in love with the wrong girl could inflict more pain than the army. It is also about how the war fractured my family and the struggle to put it back together again.”

The film is set in the early 1950s and details the bittersweet rites of passage of the earlier film’s protagonist Bill (Callum Turner). Bill, whose character portrays Boorman, is called up for National Service in the British Army. Instead of being shipped off to Korea, Bill lands a desk job as a typing instructor for a military-regulation-fixated Sergeant Major (David Thewlis) who makes life miserable for Bill and his two office mates. Running parallel to this seemingly light service comedy is Bill’s romantic pursuit of an alluring but emotionally troubled Oxford student (Tamsin Egerton) who’s out of his league. This re-creation of postwar England is infused with nostalgia and a gentle sense of loss and, despite intimations of a country on the cusp of a new era, remains fully aware of the criticisms of the country’s class system.

QUEEN AND COUNTRY is one of the elite selections for the MoMa Contender 2014, a special screening series to be held in New York during the month of November.

New Poster For Oscar Hopeful FOXCATCHER Debuts

foxcatcher_2764x4096_102814

Steve Carell, Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo are featured in the new theatrical poster from Sony Pictures Classics’ Oscar-y film FOXCATCHER.

Based on true events, director Bennett Miller’s FOXCATCHER tells the dark and fascinating story of the unlikely and ultimately tragic relationship between eccentric multi-millionaire John du Pont and two champion wrestlers, Mark and Dave Schultz.

Having seen the film at the press screening this week, I can say Carell gives a chilling performance of du Pont and is the highlight of the film. Expect to hear his name, a lot, over upcoming awards season. Bennett Miller won Best Director at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival in May and the film has screened at the Telluride, Toronto, New York, and London film festivals.

When Olympic Gold Medal winning wrestler Mark Schultz (Channing Tatum) is invited by wealthy heir John du Pont (Steve Carell) to move on to the du Pont estate and help form a team to train for the 1988 Seoul Olympics at his new state-of-the-art training facility, Schultz jumps at the opportunity, hoping to focus on his training and finally step out of the shadow of his revered brother, Dave (Mark Ruffalo). Driven by hidden needs, du Pont sees backing Schultz’s bid for Gold and the chance to “coach” a world-class wrestling team as an opportunity to gain the elusive respect of his peers and, more importantly, his disapproving mother (Vanessa Redgrave).

Flattered by the attention and entranced by du Pont’s majestic world, Mark comes to see his benefactor as a father figure and grows increasingly dependent on him for approval. Though initially supportive, du Pont’s mercurial personality turns and he begins to lure Mark into an unhealthy lifestyle that threatens to undermine his training. Soon du Pont’s erratic behavior and cruel psychological game-play begin to erode the athlete’s already shaky self-esteem. Meanwhile du Pont becomes fixated on Dave, who exudes the confidence both he and Mark lack, knowing that these are things even his money cannot buy. Fueled by du Pont’s increasing paranoia and alienation from the brothers, the trio is propelled towards a tragedy no one could have foreseen.

FOXCATCHER is a rich and moving story of brotherly love, misguided loyalty and the corruption and emotional bankruptcy that can accompany great power and wealth. As with Academy Award nominee Bennett Miller’s previous feature films, CAPOTE and MONEYBALL, he explores large themes in society through his complex character portraits of real people.

FOXCATCHER opens in theaters November 14.

THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES To Have World Premiere in London on December 1

the hobbit five armies

The end of the six films will be here in less than two months. Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Orlando Bloom, Richard Armitage and Luke Evans made the announcement today that the final film will have its world premiere in London on Monday the 1st of December.

From Academy Award-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson comes THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES, the third in a trilogy of films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien.

The film opens in UK cinemas December 12th and US theaters December 17th.

THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES brings to an epic conclusion the adventures of Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) and the Company of Dwarves. The Dwarves of Erebor have reclaimed the vast wealth of their homeland, but now must face the consequences of having unleashed the terrifying Dragon, Smaug, upon the defenseless men, women and children of Lake-town.

As he succumbs to dragon-sickness, the King Under the Mountain, Thorin Oakenshield, sacrifices friendship and honor in his search for the legendary Arkenstone. Unable to help Thorin see reason, Bilbo is driven to make a desperate and dangerous choice, not knowing that even greater perils lie ahead. An ancient enemy has returned to Middle-earth. Sauron, the Dark Lord, has sent forth legions of Orcs in a stealth attack upon the Lonely Mountain. As darkness converges on their escalating conflict, the races of Dwarves, Elves and Men must decide—unite or be destroyed. Bilbo finds himself fighting for his life and the lives of his friends as five great armies go to war.

THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES

“The Hobbit” Trilogy tells a continuous story set in Middle-earth 60 years before “The Lord of the Rings,” which Academy Award-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson and his team brought to the big screen in the blockbuster trilogy that culminated with the Oscar-winning “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.” Ian McKellen returns as Gandalf the Grey, with Martin Freeman in the central role of Bilbo Baggins, and Richard Armitage as Thorin Oakenshield.

The international ensemble cast is led by Evangeline Lilly, Luke Evans, Lee Pace, Benedict Cumberbatch, Billy Connolly, James Nesbitt, Ken Stott, Aidan Turner, Dean O’Gorman, Graham McTavish, Stephen Fry, Ryan Gage. The film also stars Cate Blanchett, Ian Holm, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, Orlando Bloom, Mikael Persbrandt, Sylvester McCoy, Peter Hambleton, John Callen, Mark Hadlow, Jed Brophy, William Kircher, Stephen Hunter, Adam Brown, John Bell, Manu Bennett and John Tui.

Billy Boyd will perform the film’s end title song, “The Last Goodbye,” which he co-wrote with the filmmakers. Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens said, “It is hard, after 16 years and six films, to know exactly how to say goodbye. We knew that we wanted to speak directly to all those who have taken this journey with us, especially to the fans whose love of these films has so often kept us going. This is why we asked Billy Boyd, who has been with us from the very beginning, and whose portrayal as Peregrin Took in ‘The Lord of The Rings’ films is so beloved, to help write and perform the final song in this trilogy. Billy is not just a wonderful actor but also an extremely accomplished singer/songwriter—we are so glad he agreed once again to share his talent with us.

“There is always something simple and truthful and heartfelt running through even the grandest of the tales of Professor Tolkien. As Thorin tells Bilbo at the end of The Hobbit, if the world valued song and cheer above gold it would be a merrier place. As much as ‘The Battle of the Five Armies’ is an epic story about war and sacrifice and loss, it is also a personal tale about the importance of friendship and family and home.

“‘The Last Goodbye,’ performed by Billy Boyd, is both a farewell to Middle-earth and it is also our leave-taking of the audience. We cannot imagine a more perfect voice to carry us away from the shores of Middle-earth…one last time.”

Billy Boyd reflects, “I wanted the song to be a goodbye to all the fans who have been part of this amazing journey and to the whole world of Tolkien as it has been told in the cinema for our generation. No one knows the world of Tolkien better than Peter, Fran and Philippa, and I feel incredibly touched and honored to be asked to write and perform this song, and to be at the start and end of these beautiful, historic stories. To once again work so closely with them has been one of the true honors of my working life.”

The soundtrack toThe Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies,” featuring “The Last Goodbye” performed by Billy Boyd, is available now for preorder at Amazon.com.

INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 3 Cherry Glazerr Covers “Tip Toe Through The Tulips”

Insidious3_Tsr_1Sht_FM2[2].jpg

The indie rock band Cherry Glazerr has recorded a lushly seductive new version of the classic song “Tiptoe Through the Tulips,” which audiences worldwide know as a disturbing recurring tune in the hit INSIDIOUS movies.

Heard in part in the just-released first theatrical trailer for next summer’s INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 3, Cherry Glazerr’s fresh interpretation, produced by the band’s frequent collaborator Carlos de la Garza, is being issued in full today on the official INSIDIOUS Facebook page (www.facebook.com/InsidiousMovie); fans can also visit the movie’s Twitter page (www.twitter.com/InsidiousMovie) for more information.

INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 3 stars Dermot Mulroney and Stefanie Scott alongside Lin Shaye, Angus Sampson, and Leigh Whannell, with the latter trio reprising their roles from the first two movies in the franchise. The newest chapter in the terrifying horror series is written and directed by franchise co-creator Leigh Whannell.

This chilling prequel, set before the haunting of the Lambert family, reveals how gifted psychic Elise Rainier (Ms. Shaye) reluctantly agrees to use her ability to contact the dead in order to help a teenage girl (Ms. Scott) who has been targeted by a dangerous supernatural entity.

Jason Blum of Blumhouse, who produced both previous movies in the series, is producing the next installment with returning producer Oren Peli and franchise co-creator James Wan, who directed the two earlier films written by Mr. Whannell with story by Mr. Wan and Mr. Whannell. Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, Steven Schneider, Charles Layton, and Xavier Marchand are executive-producing INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 3.

Praised by LA Weekly for its “spunky dream pop,” Cherry Glazerr consists of frontwoman/guitarist Clementine Creevy, drummer Hannah Uribe, and bassist Sean Redman. Their first two albums, Papa Cremp and Hazel Princess, were released by Burger Records.

Based in and around Los Angeles and Orange County, the trio has been championed and photographed by French fashion designer Hedi Slimane of Saint Laurent, who commissioned a song from the band for his Women’s Runway at Fashion Week in Paris.

Cherry Glazerr

The resulting song, “Had Ten Dollaz,”captured Cherry Glazerr’s dualities: sultry and virulent, sophisticated yet casual, laid-back and bombastic, playful yet deliberate. Suicide Squeeze Records issued “Had Ten Dollaz” with the equally intoxicating B-side “Nurse Ratched”as a limited-edition 7” single, also available digitally.

Cherry Glazerr is at work on new songs with Mr. de la Garza producing, and continues to play music festivals.

Julianne Moore Featured In New Poster For STILL ALICE

STILL ALICE onesheet

Four-time Academy Award nominee Julianne Moore is featured in this first poster for Sony Classics Pictures STILL ALICE. The film was an Official Selection at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival.

In the film, Alice Howland, happily married with three grown children, is a renowned linguistics professor who starts to forget words. When she receives a diagnosis of Early-Onset Alzheimer’s Disease, Alice and her family find their bonds thoroughly tested. Her struggle to stay connected to who she once was is frightening, heartbreaking, and inspiring.

STILL ALICE is based on the book Still Alice by Lisa Genova.

Writers-Directors Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland made Sundance history in 2006 when Quinceañera won both the Audience Award and the Grand Jury Prize. It went on to win numerous other prizes, including the Humanitas screenwriting Award, and the John Cassavettes Spirit Award in 2007. Their film The Last of Robin Hood, starring Kevin Kline, Susan Sarandon and Dakota Fanning, premiered at Toronto International Film Festival in 2013 and came out theatrically in the US in September 2014.

On casting Moore in the film, Wash Westmoreland said:

We became enamored of its central character. There was something undeniably inspiring in Alice — in her tenacity, her willfulness, the way she would never take it lying down. Whatever the disease brought, she was determined to handle it in the most practical way possible. I don’t know exactly in what chapter it happened, but the literary Alice we imagined from the page started to lose her dark curly hair as it turned a fiery red. “Who do you think could do this?” I asked Richard. “Julianne Moore,” he typed.

The more we thought about it, the more perfect the casting. Julianne could not only project the scintillating intelligence and complexity of a linguistics professor but also the vulnerability and simplicity of the later stages. She’d be able to master every beat of the character’s deterioration. She is quite simply one of the finest actors on the planet. We had met with her a few years before on another project, pitched hard to get her to do it and eagerly waited for weeks and weeks as she deliberated and finally passed. This time it was different. We sent a message to her about the project and she read the book even before the script arrived. A day or so later, we were on Skype. Within seconds she said, “I’m in.”

Moore will next be seen as President Alma Coin in THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY with Jennifer Lawrence and Philip Seymour Hoffman which will release on November 24th. Next year she will star opposite Jeff Bridges in THE SEVENTH SON due out on February 6, 2015 and in David Cronenberg’s MAPS TO THE STARS alongside Mia Wasikowska, Robert Pattinson and John Cusack. She is currently in production on the indie drama FREEHELD with Ellen Page and Zach Galifianakis.

STILL ALICE opens during the awards season on December 31, 2014; limited January 16, 2015 in NY and LA.

Keanu Reeves To Star In Director Tanya Wexler’s Sci-Fi Thriller REPLICAS

Fantastic Fest- John Wick

Lotus Entertainment and di Bonaventura Pictures announced today Keanu Reeves will star in REPLICAS from director Tanya Wexler, the follow-up to her successful hit (HYSTERIA). From a screenplay by Chad St. John, REPLICAS is produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura (GI JOE, TRANSFORMERS Franchises), Stephen Hamel, Reeves, and Fundamental Films. Company Films’ partners Hamel and Reeves developed the script based on Hamel’s treatment. Lotus will introduce the sci-fi thriller to foreign buyers starting at the upcoming AFM. CAA is handling domestic rights.

After a car accident kills his loving family, a daring neuroscientist will stop at nothing to bring them back, even if it means pitting himself against a government-controlled laboratory, a police task force, and the physical laws of science themselves.

Production is slated for spring 2015.

No stranger to sci-fi action films, Reeves is possibly best known for his role as “Neo” in the wildly popular THE MATRIX TRILOGY. Reeves highly anticipated action film JOHN WICK opened this month.

_1JW5817.NEF

Lotus Entertainment’s Bill Johnson and Jim Seibel said, “We loved the notion of taking the ‘how far will a man go to save his family’ story hook and then adding a high concept sci-fi twist. Keanu has obviously had a lot of success in the sci-fi genre and we are excited to have him anchoring a story which we believe will have great appeal to audiences across the globe.”

Di Bonaventura commented, “From my experience working with Keanu on THE MATRIX franchise through our collaboration on CONSTANTINE, I have always been impressed by Keanu’s ability to bring a genuine level of humanity to the sci-fi genre through his performance.  I am looking forward to collaborating with Keanu once again on this unique take on what lengths a person will go to alter the past, and the implications of those actions.”

Director Wexler said, “I jumped at the opportunity to work with Keanu, Stephen, and Lorenzo. I love near-future sci-fi and have always been drawn to stories about scientists on the cutting edge of technology whether that’s three years from now or 130 years ago.  These are the mavericks that change our lives.  This is a story about one who goes to extremes with his own family and is forced to confront that question–how far is too far?”

Lotus Entertainment’s current film slate includes: Luis Prieto’s KIDNAP starring Halle Berry; Tom Tykwer’s A HOLOGRAM FOR THE KING starring two-time Academy Award Winner Tom Hanks; Scott Hicks’ FALLEN based on the best-selling YA novel; Henry Hobson’s MAGGIE starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Abigail Breslin, acquired by Lionsgate for North America; and Craig Zobel’s Z FOR ZACHARIAH with Chiwetel Ejiofor and Chris Pine.
