THE DISASTER ARTIST – Review

Ironic that the creator of what many label the ‘worst film of all time’ gets one of the best Hollywood-themed biopics ever made about him (I could have written this in 1994 after seeing ED WOOD). In 2003, writer/director/star Tommy Wiseu’s THE ROOM was released into a single theater in Los Angeles (to qualify for the Oscars). That movie, ostensibly a drama about relationships and love, was a laughingstock; poorly shot, amateurishly acted, horribly written, a general trainwreck, but it attracted an immense, and still-growing, cult following. Fans revel in its insanity at midnight all over (it’s at The Tivoli in St. Louis Dec 15th and 16th). I don’t typically buy into the whole “a film so bad it’s good” concept, and THE ROOM doesn’t really fit that category anyway. Wiseu’s film is so clearly a labor of love, so clearly a passion project that it’s impossible not to find charm in its craziness. Greg Sestero costarred in THE ROOM and wrote the book The Disaster Artist, his account of the making of the film as well as his friendship with Wiseau. I’m pleased to report that THE DISASTER ARTIST, the movie directed by James Franco who stars as Wiseau, is every bit as fascinating and hilarious as I hoped it would be.

THE DISASTER ARTIST gets a lot of mileage out of the fact that nobody knows where Wiseau, this strange dude with his greasy black locks and creepy eurotrash accent, comes from, or where he get his “bottomless pit” of financial funding. THE DISASTER ARTIST is a portrait of a genuinely clueless man with a passion for fulfilling his dream without the talent to do so. It’s told through the eyes of Sestero (played by a likable Dave Franco), a struggling young actor who found himself in the right place at the right time when he first met Wiseau in a San Francisco acting class. The pair moved to Los Angeles where, after finding their acting prospects drying up, they decided to embark on the project of making their own movie. The second half of THE DISASTER ARTIST chronicles the highly calamitous shooting of THE ROOM right up to its crazy premiere. Franco recreates many of the bizarre and incompetent choices that Wiseau made shooting his opus, such as filming his movie on 35mm and digital film simultaneously at ridiculous expense, buying the equipment instead of renting it, building pricey sets for locations he could have used for free, and firing crew members at will. Viewers familiar with THE ROOM will recognize the pathetic football tossing, marvel at how many takes it Tommy needs to remember his lines, and enjoy the cast and crew’s reaction to his creepy, bad-aim lovemaking technique.

Franco, along with screenwriters Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber could easily have made THE DISASTER ARTIST a mean-spirited jab, but the film mostly avoids easy, patronizing laughs and instead shows the near heroic qualities of this patently untalented artist. That Wiseau never seemed to get wind of his shortcomings is what makes him here so irresistible. Franco delivers his lines with a perfect riff on Wiseau’s accent and off-putting lack of affect, even when screaming “You’re tearing me apart Lisa!” in existential anguish just like his hero James Dean. Both vocally and physically, Franco’s simply astounding, and he’s surrounded himself with a sublime supporting cast. Seth Rogan as Sandy, THE ROOM’s exasperated Director of Photography, is the closest thing THE DISASTER ARTIST has to an audience surrogate, and he gets the film’s biggest laughs as he deals with bizarre demands from Wiseau he doesn’t even understand. Jacki Weaver has some good moments as the confused actress whose breast cancer revelation is dropped for the duration of THE ROOM’s screenplay. Melanie Griffith, Sharon Stone, Zac Effron, and Scott Hutcherson all shine in smaller roles. Outrageously entertaining, THE DISASTER ARTIST stands out as one successful outsider’s tribute to a failed kindred spirit and is highly recommended. It’s the funniest film of 2017 and one of the best.

“These aren’t kids. These are morons!”

A new 4K transfer of Ed Wood’s girl gang explosion THE VIOLENT YEARS (1956) is currently available from AGFA and Something Weird

“I shot a cop — SO WHAT!” So say the girl gang thrill-killers of Ed Wood’s delirious THE VIOLENT YEARS! Written by legendary Hollywood outsider Edward D. WHITE CHRISTMAS screens there at 10:00am on December 15th and DIE HARD at midnight December 23rd.

“Each man’s life touches so many other lives. When he isn’t around he leaves an awful hole, doesn’t he?”

It wasn’t until the 1980s when IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE became the perennial holiday favorite it’s known as today. The ultimate feel-good classic from director Frank Capra was a box-office disappointment when it was initially released in 1946. Due to a clerical error in 1974, the film went into public domain and was then shown on every low-rent local access channel in varying degrees of quality for years and was released on VHS by a variety of fly-by-night  home video companies – including the infamous colorized version. In 1993 Republic Pictures enforced its claim to the film’s copyright. It stopped being televised as often but by then everyone had fallen in love with its charms and taken to heart its message: It’s not so much about what you leave behind when you die, but it’s more about how you use your life while you live.

Christmas-Story-a-christmas-story-17409000-900-506
I used an air rifle I got one Christmas growing up, but I never had a mail-in decoder ring which required me to consume mass quantities of Ovaltine, I never ran into bullies with yellow eyes, and I never took a dare to stick my tongue to an aluminum pole in the middle of winter. Of all the holiday films that have been released in the last 34 years, did anyone envision that the sleepy low budget film from 1983, generically titled A CHRISTMAS STORY, would be at the top of the almost everyone’s list? It actually bombed when first released in theater (though I saw it there twice) but has developed such an enormous following over the years, mostly through cable TV airings, that it probably is #1 on more favorite Christmas movies list than anything. Who would have thought Bob Clark, director of terrifying low-budget horror movies such as BLACK CHRISTMAS and DEATHDREAM (as well as the raunchy comedy hit PORKY’S) could capture such an innocent and nostalgic slice of life?

christmasStory_randy_1024x768_121920080205
A CHRISTMAS STORY captured the idealism and–yes—the sadism of being a kid. Childhood is a crazy mix of hero worship, toy envy, survival of the fittest, daily fear of something, extreme innocence, and the desire to be treated as a grown-up without having to actually put up with being one. A CHRISTMAS STORY captures all these elements with sardonic poignancy. One of the greatest things about A CHRISTMAS STORY is ‘the Old Man’ played by Darren McGavin (61 when the film was made), who is constantly busy throughout the film, whether it’s battling the *#&*#@! furnace or trying to get his *#&*#@! car started or any other number of task that he becomes occupied with and cause him to cuss. He has very little dialog with Ralphie, yet it is he who in the end gets him his BB gun.

christmas_story2_500x322_121320061111
A CHRISTMAS STORY has a kind of timelessness that makes such a beloved piece of art, one we watch over and over and never get tired of it. Now you’ll have the chance to shoot your eye out and see A CHRISTMAS STORY in all its big screen glory and with an audience of fellow merrymakers when it plays 7:30pm Thursday December 21st at Schlafly Bottleworks in Maplewood (7260 Southwest Ave St Louis, MO 63143). Suggested admission is $6 but all of that money will support production of A FIT KID, an active lifestyle development program produced by Helping Kids Together (http://www.helpingkidstogether.com/), a St. Louis based social enterprise dedicated to building cultural diversity and social awareness among young people through the arts and active living.

Punk Club Doc THE OUTHOUSE Screening at Schlafly Bottleworks December 6th – ‘Strange Brew’

THE OUTHOUSE screens Wednesday, December 6th at 8pm at Schlafly Bottleworks Restaurant and Bar (7260 Southwest Ave.- at Manchester – Maplewood, MO 63143) as part of Webster University’s Award-Winning Strange Brew Film Series. Admission is $5

The Strange Brew Cult Movie night is excited to announce a Strange Brew first: They will host the St. Louis premiere of the 2017 film THE OUTHOUSE, a documentary focused on the legendary midwest punk club. Hidden away in the cornfields of Lawrence, Kansas, where the pavement turned to gravel, the Outhouse was a small cinder block building where countless influential punk and alternative acts played formative all-ages shows with no rules. The Strange Brew Screening of “The Outhouse” – STL Premiere is one-night only at Schlafly Bottleworks on Wednesday, December 6 at 8pm.

From 1985 to 1997, some of the most influential bands in punk rock played insane shows at The Outhouse, including Fugazi, The Melvins, Rollins Band, Gwar, The Circle Jerks, Body Count, Social Distortion, Bad Brains, White Zombie, Descendents, Sonic Youth, Green Day, Fishbone, The Meat Puppets, Helmet, Nirvana, and St. Louis punk mainstays Ultraman. The documentary features inteviews with promoters and many of the members of groups who played at the infamous club (now a seedy strip joint). It was a raucous scene of misfits and anarchists on the margins of youth culture.

SANTA CLAUS CONQUERS THE MARTIANS Screens at Schlafly Bottleworks December 7th

“Santa, you will never return to Earth, you belong to Mars now.”

SANTA CLAUS CONQUERS THE MARTIANS screens Thursday December 7th at 7:00pm at Schlafly Bottleworks (7260 Southwest Avenue Maplewood, MO 63143).

What on Earth would we do if martians invaded and kidnapped Santa Claus for their own? Find out Thursday November 7th at Schlafly Bottleworks when The  A Film Series presents a screening of the 1964 Christmas classic SANTA CLAUS CONQUERS THE MARTIANS!

Even though SANTA CLAUS CONQUERS THE MARTIANS is often listed as one of the ‘worst movies ever made’, it’s not as bad as you would think. The story is simple: Santa Claus is kidnapped by Martians to provide joy and toys to the children of Mars when they become overly depressed. Sounds like an ingredient for one of the worst movies of all time, right? Wrong! This movie is pure entertainment from beginning to end! It doesn’t ever get REALLY boring, instead having long stretches of goofy comedy that isn’t funny for the right reasons. The acting is mediocre at best, but I did like the sets they used. Very surrealistic, in my opinion. There is plenty of great dialogue to laugh at (i.e, “I wasn’t sleeping! I just haven’t been able to sleep these past few nights…I forgot how! So I was just practicing!”), most of it coming from clumsy Droppo, “the laziest man on Mars!”. The little children who are kidnapped by the Martians are a mix of wooden and dedicated. Of course, some scenes’ inadequacy are inexcusable! The polar bear costume is obviously fake and the Martian guns are Whammo Air Blasters that freeze people (who manage to keep moving and blinking, for some reason)! And it stars a 10-year old Pia Zadora as ‘Girmar’!

Scenes to watch for: the Martians use the robot Torg to kidnap Santa, but Santa makes him into a toy!; the ‘suspenseful’ space door scene; the ‘amazing’ toy conveyor belt; Droppo passing as Santa (antennae and all); and the final showdown between Voldar and Santa, utilizing bubbles, water guns, soldiers, and other conveniently placed toys! SANTA CLAUS CONQUERS THE MARTIANS is pure entertainment, in my opinion, and all those who speak against should be sent to Mars!

Don’t miss SANTA CLAUS CONQUERS THE MARTIANS December 7th at Schlafly Bottleworks

The provocative psychological thriller stars Deanna Russo (Being Human, Gossip Girl) as Mary, who moves back to her suburban hometown after her husband gets relocated for work.  As her family ties up loose ends back home, she moves into their new house alone. And although the move makes Mary nostalgic for her youth, there’s something very sinister about that Ice CreamTruck that patrols her suburb.

THE ICE CREAM TRUCK also stars Dana Gaier (Despicable Me 3), John Redlinger (Thirst, Banshee), Emil Johnsen (Isolerad), Hilary Barraford (Go For Sisters), Jeff Daniel Phillips (31),  and Lisa Ann Walter (War of the Worlds).

Mary’s husband gets relocated for work which allows her to move back to her suburban hometown. As her family ties up loose ends back home, Mary moves into their new house all alone and….waits. Yet in this idealistic world, something seems very odd. The IceCream Man, a symbol of youth and good times, starts killing some of her neighbors. Mary soon learns that the suburbs are scarier in more ways that she ever remembered.

Storytelling is very much in Freels Johnston’s DNA.  The granddaughter of legendary crime writer Elmore Leonard, The Ice Cream Truck screenplay was a semi-finalist in the Circus Road Screenplay competition.

As a producer developing material for over a decade, Freels Johnston worked on adaptations of her grandfather’s work and produced Sparks, the directorial debut of Joseph Gordon-Levitt.  After completing a project for the USA Network, she decided to follow her passion and write and direct her own material. Her first film, 2014’s micro budget thriller Rebound, developed a cult following on VOD, was called, “Almost David Lynchian in its strangeness” by Film Threat and Rue Morgue said, the film “(was) worth watching to the end for the unnervingly realistic twist ending.”

THE ICE CREAM TRUCKwill be released on DVD  via Amazon 11/14.
