2015 Oscar Nomination Predictions

Contributed by Michelle McCue, Gary Salem and Melissa Thompson

The countdown to the Oscars is less than 24 hours away.

While some of the presumed nominees, and the precursors, seemed like a done deal in the fall, Oscar watchers will know for sure on Thursday morning when the nominations for the 87th Academy Awards are announced.

Will the guilds inclusion of AMERICAN SNIPER and perceived snubs that came with the lack of BAFTA, Directors Guild and Producers Guild nominations for SELMA make any difference? What nominations will come out of left field?

The Academy expanded the Best Picture category for a possible 10 nominees with the intention of including big box-office hits that would help the show’s TV ratings. However, this year the race is dominated by specialty and independent labels with Gone Girl being the only contender with blockbuster status.

One thing is sure, this year’s race will have awards season fans biting their nails right up to Oscar Sunday, February 22.

For you die-hards getting up Thursday morning before dawn, Oscar producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron announced last week that actor Chris Pine, Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs, and directors Alfonso Cuarón and J.J. Abrams will announce the nominations in all 24 Oscar categories at a special two-part live news conference at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

The Nominations Announcement is a live news conference where more than 400 media representatives, including WAMG, from around the world will be gathered.

At 5:30 a.m. PT, Cuarón and Abrams will announce the nominees in the following categories: Animated Feature Film, Documentary Feature, Documentary Short Subject, Film Editing, Original Song, Production Design, Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing and Visual Effects.

At 5:38 a.m. PT, Pine and Boone Isaacs will take the stage to unveil the nominations for Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Cinematography, Costume Design, Directing, Foreign Language Film, Makeup and Hairstyling, Original Score, Adapted Screenplay, Original Screenplay and Best Picture.

You can catch it live here: www.oscars.org/live or below.

BOYHOOD Takes Home The Golden Globe for Best Picture

Boyhood

The awards season shows kicked off with the 72nd annual Golden Globes on Sunday, where the coming-of-age drama BOYHOOD was the night’s big winner.

Richard Linklater’s 12-years-in-the-making movie won Best Drama, as well as Best Director for Linklater and Best Supporting Actress for Patricia Arquette.

Taking out her written speech, Arquette apologized: “I’m the only nerd with a piece of paper.”

“Bottom line is we’re all flawed in this world. No one’s perfect,” said Linklater, accepting his directing Globe. “I want to dedicate this to parents that are evolving everywhere and families that are just passing through this world and doing their best.”

The star-studded ceremony, hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler for the third year in a row, aired live coast-to-coast on NBC.

The night seemed to be setting up for the top two Oscar contenders – BOYHOOD and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s BIRDMAN – to lead the Globes’ twin categories of drama and comedy. But in a major surprise, Wes Anderson’s GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL swooped in to win best picture, comedy or musical. He listed a mock thank you to the members of the Hollywood Foreign Press, the collection of mostly freelance foreign journalists who put on the Globes, naming “Yorum and Dagmar and Yukiko and Mounawar.”

The elegantly crafted backstage romp BIRDMAN nevertheless won Best Actor in a comedy or musical for its lead, Michael Keaton, who plays a former superhero star mounting a serious play on Broadway, and Best screenplay.

Reflecting on his life, Keaton’s voice broke up as he thanked his son, whom he called his best friend. “Shoot,” said Keaton. “Two things I said I wasn’t going to do: cry and give air quotes.”

In one of the evening’s most hotly contested categories, Best Actor in a drama, Eddie Redmayne won for his performance as Stephen Hawking in THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING.

Julianne Moore won Best Actress in a drama for her startling performance as an academic with early on-set Alzheimer’s in STILL ALICE.

Amy Adams surprised in taking Best Actress in a comedy or musical for her performance in BIG EYES ”I didn’t even reapply lip gloss,” said an unprepared Adams.

The first award of the night went to J.K. Simmons for Best Supporting Actor for his performance as a domineering jazz teacher in the acclaimed indie WHIPLASH.

LA DOLCE VITA Actress Anita Ekberg Dies At 83

anita ekberg

“It was I who made Fellini famous, not the other way around” – Anita Ekberg

According to reports (La Stampa), Anita Ekberg has died at age 83.

The Swedish-born actress and sex-symbol of the 1950s and `60s was immortalized bathing in the Trevi fountain in Federico Fellini’s LA DOLCE VITA. Ekberg also starred in King Vidor’s WAR AND PEACE and alongside Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis in 1956’s HOLLYWOOD OR BUST which she won a Golden Globe award for “Most Promising Newcomer.”

From the AP:

Ekberg’s lawyer Patrizia Ubaldi confirmed she died in Rome Sunday morning following a series of illnesses. She had been hospitalized most recently after Christmas. Ubaldi said a ceremony would be held in the coming days at a Lutheran church in Rome, and that Ekberg had specified that her remains be cremated.

Ubaldi also said that in her last days Ekberg was saddened by the illness and her advancing age. “She had hoped to get better, something that didn’t happen,” she said.

Ekberg had long lived in Italy, the country that gave her worldwide fame thanks to the iconic dip opposite Marcello Mastroianni. The scene where the blond bombshell, clad in a black dress, her arms wide open, calls out “Marcello” remains one of the most famous images in film history.

Her curvaceous body and glamorous social life made her a favorite of tabloid press in the 1950s and 1960s. She married twice but never had children – a fact she came to regret later in her life. Some gossip magazines called her “The Iceberg” in a nod to her Scandinavian background.

But even as she became one of Sweden’s most famous exports, Ekberg maintained a problematic relation with her native country. She never starred in a Swedish film and was often at odds with Swedish journalists, who criticized her for leaving the country and ridiculed her for adopting an American accent.

Born on Sept. 29, 1931, in the southern city of Malmo, Ekberg grew up with seven siblings.

In 1951 she won the Miss Sweden competition, after being recommended to enter by organizers who saw her on the street, and went to the United States to compete for the Miss Universe title.

She didn’t win but became a model in Hollywood and later started taking on small acting roles.

_80190769_ekberg

Her role in Federico Fellini’s “La Dolce Vita” – where she played a movie star – shot her to stardom. The movie was a colossal success and came to define the wild and carefree days of the early 1960s.

Hosting a Swedish radio program in 2005, Ekberg recalled shooting the scene in the Trevi Fountain in Rome. She said it was shot in February, the water in the fountain was cold and Mastroianni was falling over in the fountain drunk on vodka.

“And there I was. I was freezing,” she said. “They had to lift me out of the water because I couldn’t feel my legs anymore.”

“I have seen that scene a few times. Maybe too many times. I can’t stand watching it anymore, but it was beautiful at the time,” she said.

Ekberg remained in Italy for years, appearing in scores of movies, many forgettable. She returned in two Fellini movies: “Clowns” and “Intervista.”

Ekberg married Briton Anthony Steel in 1956, but divorced him four years later. In 1963 she married again to actor Rik van Nutter, but that marriage also failed.

In an interview with Swedish tabloid Aftonbladet in 2006, Ekberg said her only regret in life was never having children.

His daughter Felicia Taylor, a former CNN correspondent, confirmed the news Thursday.

“My dad loved his work. Being an actor was his passion – calling it an honorable art and something he couldn’t live without,” she said in a statement.

“He once said, ‘I am a poor student sitting at the feet of giants, yearning for their wisdom and begging for lessons that might one day make me a complete artist,” she continued, “ ‘so that if all goes well, I may one day sit beside them.”

Born on Jan 11, 1930 in Sydney, Australia, Rod Taylor is best remembered for his starring roles in Alfred Hitchcock’s THE BIRDS (1963) and George Pal’s THE TIME MACHINE (1960). He also provided the voice of Pongo in Disney’s 101 DALMATIANS (1961). Taylor also starred in TV’s “The Twilight Zone” in an episode called “And When the Sky Was Opened.”

‘There are so many incredible feelings I have for him. Rod was a great pal to me and a real strength, we were very, very good friends,’ said actress Tippi Hedren in a statement to People.

His final role was in Quentin Tarantino’s INGLORIOUS BASTERDS (2009) as Winston Churchill.

Top 10 Worst Films of 2014

worstof2014-2

The Wall Street Journal reports “overall North American box-office receipts and attendance for 2014 declined more than 5% to $10.35 billion from $10.92 billion in 2013, according to box-office tracker Rentrak Corp. – the worst results since 2011.”

Kicking off 2015 with “Best of” lists and awards season on the minds of many Cinephiles, we offer our look back at the worst of 2014. Some awful, some horrendous, we were disappointed and flummoxed by some of the movies Tinseltown released into theaters (and on moviegoers) over the past 12 months.

As we shake our WAMG heads over the biggest letdowns, here we go with our Top 10 list of the Worst Films of 2014.

DISHONORABLE MENTION: HORNS

horns_movie_picture_6_

In HORNS Daniel Radcliffe played a grieving young man who inexplicably grows horns from his forehead after the community he lives in finds him culpable for the death and murder of his girlfriend. HORNS was a mishmash of genres that never quite fit together; crime drama, satanic horror and dark comedy, but the humor in the film mixed uneasily with the cheesy gore and it never well-established the rules of exactly what Radcliffe’s horns could do. At times it seemed as if the people had to ask his character for permission to perform darkest desires, but at others they simply did them even when he was against them. HORNS started off engaging enough but devolved but into a mess of empty symbolism and strangeness.

BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT: FOXCATCHER

FOXCATCHER

FOXCATCHER should have been a compelling tale of money and madness but instead it was one long, suffocating 135 minutes. Director Bennett Miller let scene after scene ramble on and on, an instance of a filmmaker overvaluing his material beyond all good sense. FOXCATCHER wasn’t a fiasco, but considering the story, hype, and cast, it definitely was a huge letdown and its inclusion on this list is a reflection of expectation. FOXCATCHER had little to say and took far too long to say it.

10. POMPEII

1231429 - Pompeii

Few place names evoke such thoughts of human tragedy on a colossal scale. There are many works of literature and film that capture the enormity of the events of 2,000 years ago, but we’re afraid last year’s film POMPEII was not one of them.   Stock characters, bad acting, cheesy dialogue, corny plotting, and unconvincing CGI were all on display in 3-D and by the end you’ll have wished that the volcano would have exploded upon director Paul W.S. Anderson just so that you can be saved from anymore of his catastrophic disasters

9. A HAUNTED HOUSE 2

a haunted house 2

Marlon Wayans is a gifted comedian, but in A HAUNTED HOUSE 2 he worked hard his schtick; mugging, eye-rolling and screaming in that high-pitched voice, to squeeze out just a couple of laughs. The humor aimed low with scatological, fart and crude sex references aplenty but it got tiresome quickly. The found-footage horror film may have seemed ripe for parody a couple of years ago but by now the gimmick has done a decent job of parodying itself. Spoof movies don’t have to be lame timewasters and the genre can have its merits when done right but A HAUNTED HOUSE 2 was not one of those times.

8. SABOTAGE

sabotage

After finishing up his political career, “Ah-nold” continues to try to jump-start his action movie dynasty, but seems to hitting the brick wall that he easily plowed through in those golden 1980’s actioners. At least he trying to grab the “hard R-rated” high calibre fans, but this misfire goes from gritty police caper to “who’s gonna’ buy it next?” slasher send-up. As we said in the original review, ” After the mystery is revealed the film is further dragged down by a brutal, ludicrous epilogue. ” We know you’ve got a few more great flicks in you, “guv-er-nator”, so don’t waste your time on cinema sludge like this, okay?

7. A MILLION WAYS TO DIE IN THE WEST

A Million Ways to Die in the West

So, you feel like having a few laughs at Western movie clichés? Well then, there’s a nifty 40th Anniversary edition Blu Ray of BLAZING SADDLES. Or THE SHAKIEST GUN IN THE WEST. Anything, anything, but this stale bit of sagebrush! Literally, all of the chuckles are in the trailer. And after years behind the scenes, and the microphone as different animated voices and TED, Seth McFarlane proves to be a mediocre leading man (from our original review ” Seth appears more inconvenienced and annoyed than truly terrified “). We also said ” it sputters out of steam at just under two looong hours”. Now vamoose ya’ varmit!!

6. TAMMY

tammy

She was an unexpected delight, stealing scenes in her supporting role in BRIDESMAIDS. But her trip to “above the title” star has been a rocky one for Ms. McCarthy. So, maybe the best plan is to create a project with her talented and funny hubby Ben Falcone, who also directs. Nope, didn’t work. While Ms. M had a great comedy partner in THE HEAT with Sandra Bullock, here’s she’s mis-matched with a miscast Susan Sarandon as her Grandma” (!?!). As we said in the original review, “Despite the salt-and-pepper wig, she seems too youthful for the role”. As for McCarthy’s Tammy, ” the character is toned down by the story’s end to inject some clumsy bits of pathos and romance”. Happily by year’s end MM scored some points with another great supporting turn in ST. VINCENT. Nice career save after a big stumble!

5. LEGEND OF HERCULES

the-legend-hercules-3_rgb-560x287

Hercules has never felt more wooden and emotionless. It’s tragic to see such a famous and mighty hero given such a cheap revamping. Renny Harlin directs the film like a dated 90’s action flick, complete with an endless amount of awkwardly choreographed and bloodless action sequences. Everything from the script, to the cast, to the overall production, feels like a schlocky cash-grab attempting to replicate the box-office success of 300. I love that Hollywood wants to bring back the sword and sandal adventures of yesteryear, however I have to urge you to use all your strength and avoid this epic travesty.

4. THIRD PERSON

third-person-liam-neeson-olivia-wilde

In THIRD PERSON Paul Haggis copied his CRASH template by setting up three seemingly random episodes with three seemingly random sets of characters, some of whom eventually became intertwined with one another during a two-day period. The result was self-indulgent, thoroughly uninteresting, and at 137 minutes, far too long. Not just long, but long about getting to its points and to its connections because it had to set up so many characters and their situations first before showing how they connect. By halfway, one could see it was a strange, rambling wreck of a movie. That wouldn’t have been so bad if THIRD PERSON was clever or entertaining or at least so-bad-it’s-good. But it wasn’t. It was just deadly, deadly dull.

3. ANNABELLE

ANNABELLE

Even though ANNABELLE was advertised as a creepy doll film, it often feels like nothing of the sort. In fact, the porcelain figure appears on-screen for maybe a total of 10 minutes. An exhausting amount of effort is spent trying to show the expecting couple in a sympathetic light. It’s almost as if the film felt the need to compensate for weak dialogue by giving us so much dialogue and narrative between them instead of focusing on thrills and chills. ANNABELLE should have been a fun and scary night at the movies. If an emphasis had placed on being fun than perhaps it wouldn’t feel like such an overly serious slog to get through.

2. MEN, WOMEN AND CHILDREN

Men_Women___Children_21

MEN, WOMEN & CHILDREN is a dreary drama that sticks to its heavy handed style at the cost of the audience’s enjoyment. In telling a story about how emotionless and distant we have become with one another, director Jason Reitman has given the audience characters that might not be what he had intended – a herd of mindless drones that you don’t actually care about. Good drama rests entirely on characters successfully interacting with one another while simultaneously engaging the audience. When you have a film where the basis of the story is about these artificial connections, how are we supposed to connect with them if they can’t even connect with each other?

1. TRANSCENDENCE

TRANSCENDENCE

A couple of good ideas can go a long way. Other times they could be just that – ideas without a proper framework to support them. Wally Pfister’s directorial debut seems to struggle to find a purpose for the “high-concept” thoughts that seem to expand its own head rather than that of the audience. Mostly though TRANSCENDENCE just feels stagnant. It exists and that’s barely an appropriate description of it. There’s not any new parts in this machine which makes all the gear spinning all the more tedious since there isn’t any energy pushing them. Pfister obviously knows how to present a striking image – which he frequently does here as he previously did working with Christopher Nolan – but his images alone can’t elevate this vacant film.

Here’s our individual lists. What movies were your worst of the year?
