Sony Considering ‘Candyman’ Remake

According to Schick Till You Drop, the good people over at Sony are buzzing about bringing back ‘Candyman’.   No writer or director have been attached, and the talks are at a very early stage.

Apparently one idea Sony has come up with for the remake is to make the character of Candyman, originally played by Tony Todd, a Caucasian.   So, it’s a white dude with a hook?   Isn’t that ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’?

‘Punisher: War Zone’ Knocked Down to PG-13?

Could ‘Punisher: War Zone’ be going the way of ‘Live Free or Die Hard’? That just may be the case, according to this article from Latino Review.

Word out is that director, Lexi Alexander, has already been “allegedly” fired from the film. Her own website doesn’t even mention the film. And, now, according to a source close to the project, there is a great debate over at Lionsgate as to the film’s rating.

The studio evidently wants to cash in on the success of ‘The Dark Knight’, making ‘Punisher’ dark, yet accessible. On top of that, the film is poised to be the lone release on post-Thanksgiving weekend, time and time again the worst filmgoing weekend of the year.

Groovy News About ‘Evil Dead 4’

Sam Raimi shocked the world this year at Comic-Com exclaiming ‘Evil Dead’ will rise again. The main question everyone was asking, however, was, “Will it be a remake or a sequel?” and “Will Bruce Campbell be back?”

Well rest assured, the man they call Bruce will be returning to his role as Ash, Housewares.

“When he’s ready, I’m ready,” Campbell told MTV News about the prospect of reteaming with Raimi on the much anticipated ‘Evil Dead 4′.’

Campbell went on to say that the two had discussed in great lengths the direction the new film should go in and what will be next in store for Ash. One of the aspects that will not be ignored is Campbell’s age.

“Sam gets to hide behind the camera. I can’t. But I think he’s planning on factoring that in,” Campbell said about his age. “It’d be a major liability, you know Ash runs out of breath or his back goes out and stuff like that. I mean I just blew my hamstring fighting a stung guy for ‘Burn Notice’, the show I’m doing now. So there’s a little bit of truth to all that.”

When asked about the possibility of bringing along a younger sidekick such as those seen in recent years with ‘Live Free or Die Hard’ and ‘Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull’, Campbell just says, “Yeah, not so much gonna happen in ‘Evil Dead’.”

“I think the audience would be insulted if you did, because then you feel this obvious pressure to appeal,” Campbell went on to say. “The beauty of the ‘Evil Dead’ movies is that you’re only appealing to one demographic and that’s people who like horror movies.”

‘Killing Pablo’: Bardem Out, Ramirez In

A sure-fire Oscar contender for 2010 has been replaced.   Javier Bardem, who was scheduled to play Columbian drug lord Pablo Escobar, has left Joe Carnahan’s ‘Killing Pablo’ due to scheduling conflicts.

Bardem has said he and the actor “couldn’t find a time when we could both work.”

Apparently, however, this is old news, as Carnahan has already found Bardem’s replacement, ‘The Bourne Ultimatums” villain, Edgar Ramirez.

Of Ramirez, Carnahan stated this: “I spent the last week in Columbia with Edgar Ramirez talking ‘Pablo’ and he has every intention of portraying Escobar and I couldn’t be more fired up by the prospect.   He’s coming at it with boundless enthusiasm, conviction to the role and the understanding that he’s going to have to pack on anywhere from 35 to 40 lbs.”

No word whether or not Adrian Grenier was anywhere on Carnahan’s list of options.

Paula Wagner Leaving United Artists

Paula Wagner, Tom Cruise’s long-time partner, is planning to leave United Artists.   According to Variety, Wagner, co-owner and CEO of UA, is in negotiations with MGM to forfeit her post at the studio.

Wagner will likely retain an ownership interest in the studio.   It is expected she will leave as soon as post-production on ‘Valkyrie’, the studio’s second film, is completed.   Wagner is also a producer on the upcoming ‘Death Race’ being released by Universal next week.

Bousman and Ratner Together At Last

Remember the insane slasher flick Mother’s Day from 1980?   Well, how about a remake?   How about a remake produced by Brett Ratner?   How about a remake produced by Brett Ratner and directed by Darren Lynn Bousman?

The remake of one of Troma Picture’s earliest films is in the scrip stage with Franck Khalfoun (‘P2’) and Ratner working diligently on it.   Evidently, Ratner is a huge fan of the original, which actually explains a lot if you think about it.

No word yet on what studio is backing it.   Bousman’s involvement is just talk right now, though the Saw II, III, and IV director has stated recently that he is working on a remake that he believes “people will embrace.”
