Mr. Irrelevant is the inspiring true story of John Tuggle (David Corenswet), the last player selected in the last round of the 1983 NFL draft by the New York Giants. A true underdog, Tuggle defied expectations on the field and off for his then first-year head coach, Bill Parcells (Michael Shannon), his newfound love (Isabel May), and his team, proving that remarkable hope and perseverance can transcend even the greatest challenges.

Tuggle played college football at the University of California, Berkeley (Cal), where he was a standout running back and lettered four years (1979–1982), leading the team in rushing during his senior year. elected dead last in the 1983 draft, a position traditionally christened as “Mr. Irrelevant” via Los Angeles Times coverage of the annual event.
During the 1984 preseason, Tuggle began experiencing severe chest pains and fatigue. He was diagnosed with an aggressive form of angiosarcoma (a rare cancer of the blood vessels). He tragically passed away on August 30, 1986, at just 25 years old.
