Explore the history of one of the most controversial works of modern children’s literature: The best selling teen classic Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, which scared a generation of young readers and became one of the most banned books of modern times. Scary Stories creates both the ultimate celebration and dissertation of this iconic piece of horror literature.
Cody Meirick’s film features more than 40 interviews, from family members of author Alvin Schwartz, to fellow children’s book horror authors like R.L Stine (Goosebumps) and Q.L. Pearce, to folklorists, artists and fans discussing the impact that the books have had on both themselves as well as the culture at large. The documentary also explores the various times in which the books were banned or targeted by parent and religious groups as ‘satanic’ or otherwise too macabre for its targeted teen scholastic audience.
Penned by Schwartz and illustrated by Stephen Gammell, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is a three-volume series consisting of short horror stories for pre-teens and children that were adapted from American folklore and urban legends. Because of some of the violent illustrations and the subject matter, parent groups, religious organizations and school boards had the books pulled from libraries and schools at various times. A feature film adaptation of the books, produced by horror icon Guillermo del Toro, is due in theaters this summer.

International award-winning filmmaker Adam Scorgie is proud to present the US Theatrical release of MAKING COCO: THE GRANT FUHR STORY. “Making Coco” makes it theatrical debut in St. Louis October 1st at Ballpark Village after being an official selection at SIFF (Seattle Film Festival), Nashville Film Festival, Closing Night Gala film at the Calgary Film Festival, and many others.
Barely 19, Grant ‘Coco’ Fuhr became starting goalie for the most exciting team in NHL history. In his mid-30’s as a St. Louis Blue, he played 79 games in an 82 game season to set a league record, then followed that ironman performance by playing 73 the following season on a completely rebuilt knee
During the decade and a half between, he employed his acrobatic style and cat-like reflexes to backstop five Stanley Cup champions and two Canada Cup winners, cementing a reputation as the ultimate “money goalie”. He also got himself demoted to the minors for calling the hometown fans jerks, announced his retirement at the age of 26 in an attempt to force a famously hard-nosed general manager to renegotiate a long-term contract, and was suspended for an entire NHL season for conduct deemed “dishonourable and against the welfare of the league” for cocaine use, only to return and redeem himself as one of the game’s true greats.
Grant Fuhr was the first black superstar in hockey. He won 403 regular season NHL games and is a member ofthe 2003 class of the Hockey Hall of Fame MAKING COCO: THE GRANT FUHR STORY is the story of Fuhr’s life, on and off the ice.
“Making Coco” will be released exclusively in theatres at six local St. Louis Marcus theatres for one-week starting on October 4th, 2019 with a very Special Premiere Screening Event at Ballpark Village on October 1st including a Q&A with Grant Fuhr, Kelly Chase and others with Darren Pang as the moderator. Also included at the Ballpark Village event will be several one of kind signed Grant Fuhr masks designed for the occasion by Armori Steele..
We all recognize Los Angeles, New York, Atlanta and even Chicago as hubs for Hollywood, but we are usually considered “flyover country”. Midwest filmmakers plan to disrupt that with the first annual In Motion Filmmaking Conference November 2nd at Covo co-working space in downtown St. Louis. In Motion is organized by Continuity, a non-profit whose mission is to expand diversity in media production through skills-based training, mentorship and opportunities for untapped talent. The conference is sponsored by the MO Film Office, Wildlife Command Center “Movie Animals”, Bruton Stroube, Explore St. Louis, SAG-AFTRA , Cinema St. Louis plus over a half dozen additional organizations.
This one-day conference will afford both novice and professional filmmakers from St. Louis as well as the surrounding Midwest region the opportunity to learn from industry experts, network with peers, and participate in Continuity’s ongoing efforts to expand diversity in film. All profits from In Motion will go to Continuity’s programs. Attendees will hear from filmmakers whose films have played at Sundance and premiered on Netflix and national television. With a dozen more speakers yet to be announced, over 25 speakers have already committed including Damon Davis (director of “Whose Streets”), Stephanie Tobey (Producer of the Netflix documentary “Abducted in Plain Sight”) and David Johnson (President of Coolfire Studios – Producers of “Fast N’ Loud” & “Welcome to Sweetie Pies.”) A Pitch Competition and Happy Hour networking event will round out the day’s activities. Tickets are on sale now at www.inmotionconference.com.
“The support for the conference has truly blown away our expectations, and we continually hear from filmmakers ‘Thank you so much for organizing this! Our region really needs it’,” explains Dan Parris, Conference Director of In Motion and executive director of Continuity. Continuity is supported in the planning of the conference from a committee of eleven local artists and influencers.
In Motion is looking to fill volunteer slots and additional sponsors for the event, including the Presenting Sponsor of the conference. To inquire about these remaining opportunities, visit the contact page atwww.inmotionconference.com.

Cantopop star-turned-actor Leon Lai (Fallen Angels) stars as a cute but helpless bumpkin from Mainland China trying to get accustomed to his new life in Hong Kong in Comrades: Almost a Love Story. As the title suggests, Lai’s Li Xiao-jun quickly falls in with the helpful and acclimated Li Qiao (Maggie Cheung, of Police Story and In the Mood for Love), who is remarkably good at the hustle of day-to-day life in Hong Kong. Featuring a supporting turn by the legendary cinematographer Christopher Doyle (in a rare acting role, here seemingly playing some version of himself) and a strong sense of place in Hong Kong between the 1985 Joint Declaration signing and the 1997 handover, Comrades is ripe for (re)discovery by an American audience.
In Cantonese with English subtitles.
Admission is:
$7 for the general public $6 for seniors, Webster alumni and students from other schools $5 for Webster University staff and faculty

HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH screens midnights this weekend (September 6th and 7th) at The Tivoli Theater (6350 Delmar) as part of their ‘Reel Late at The Tivoli’ Midnight Series.A Facebook invite for the screening can be found HERE
The winner of numerous awards including the Audience and Director awards at Sundance, HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH (2001) is the film of an original stage musical comedy that played off Broadway for over two years. It centers on Hedwig (John Cameron Mitchell, not to be confused with Cameron Mitchell, who would also have been good in the role),whose only way of escaping from East Berlin is to undergo a sex-change and assume his mother’s identity. Unfortunately the operation goes wrong and he is left with an `angry inch’. Escaping to America, he forms a rock band whilst seeking the soul partner that will fulfill his destiny. Loaded with songs that you will be humming all the way out of the Tivoli, HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH is the funniest, most outrageously entertaining movie of its kind since ROCKY HORROR. Unlike that classic, it does have some more serious philosophical reflections built into it (mostly via the songs), but it rocks and injects some seriously funny pizzaz into the transgender scene. A must-see movie this weekend at The Tivoli!
Here’s the upcoming line-up for Reel-late at The Tivoli:
Sept. 13-14 FRIDAY THE 13TH
Sept. 20-21 SPIRITED AWAY
Friday and Saturday midnight subtitled; Saturday 11:30am in English
Sept. 27-28 REPO! THE GENETIC OPERA
Oct. 4-5 THE LOST BOYS New 2K DCP remaster!

In August WAMG had the chance to visit Universal Studios Hollywood to check out the mega attraction “Jurassic World—The Ride” and things just got real!
Watch this behind-the-scenes of look at the ride to see what it takes to bring dinosaurs to life.
The update to the Jurassic World ride are on line, and things did indeed get real! From the moment that you get an eyeful of the enormous Mososaurus in its tank, gracefully swimming, despite it’s gigantic size, it is a sight to behold, and can be a bit frightening as it seems to notice you.
The rest of the ride is still fun, with raptors, dilophosaurs, and even the Tyrannosaurus and many others waiting for you as you twist and turn through the forest adventure. It doesn’t get much better, especially if you love dinosaurs!
The elaborately themed all-new “Raptor Encounter” where Blue, the beloved Velociraptor from the JURASSIC WORLD movies, engages with guests, including us, in daring face-to-face encounters, along with the addition of two new dinosaurs – a Baby Raptor with her Raptor Handler and a life-size Triceratops who greet guests outside the “Jurassic World—The Ride” entrance, further enhance the entire experience.
Brought to life by employing the exact computer-generated model and images used to create her for the big screen, Blue tips the scales at a hefty 750 pounds, towering 15 feet in height and 13 feet from tail to snout, and succumbs to highly skilled handlers who adeptly guide her to within feet of guests.
Plus, a new interactive “Dino Play” area is designed to inspire children of all ages to explore and excavate giant dinosaur fossils.
If you can’t make it out to Hollywood, Universal has a great alternative.
See Jurassic World dinosaurs come to life and experience the thrill and adventure of Jurassic World Live Tour in a city near you.

From its snow-capped roofs and cobblestone streets to the historic British sensibilities that characterize the whimsical look and feel of the land, “The Wizarding World of Harry Potter” transports guests of all ages to the very places they read about in the stories or watched on the silver screen.
Upon entering the land through the archway, Hogsmeade bustles to life with the same vitality of a quaint local village: merchants hard at work, a train conductor welcoming new arrivals and a pub packed to the gills with hungry patrons, but with the added element of enthusiastic guests intent on experiencing them all, including the land’s signature ride, “Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey.”
From the moment that you have to leap aboard, buckle in, and get ready for a ride like you’ve never experienced before.
You are taken in to the magical world, completely immersed in a Wizarding World adventure, racing along with Harry and Ron, trying to escape a dragon, dodging dementors, spiders, and obstacles. It is dizzying at times, but thrilling at the entire time, and we found ourselves laughing, gasping, and amazed from the moment it started until the moment it ended. This entire section of the park is in character, right down to the sounds and design of the public restrooms, with Moaning Myrtle reminding you that she’s nearby at all times.
And then there’s the classic revenge of the Mummy ride, a high speed indoor rollercoaster that gives you the sights and sounds of The Mummy, and man is it fast (and quite fun). This one isn’t for the faint of heart, but it’s worth riding a few times, and your adrenaline will never be the same.
For those that love giant robots (and who doesn’t) we got to ride the Transformers: The Ride 3D and it WILL be your cup of tea (or oil). Based on the iconic brand from Hasbro and the electrifying film franchise, directed by Michael Bay, the film has been celebrated for its multi-generational appeal, inventive storyline, spectacular action sequences and amazing special effects. This fun ride revolutionizes theme park ride perceptions as a cutting-edge mega- attraction at Universal Studios Hollywood.
The dynamic, motion-based thrill ride tells an original “TRANSFORMERS” story using original, photo-realistic 3D-HD media, sophisticated special effects masterminded by Industrial Light & Magic, and one of the most elaborate roaming flight simulator ride systems ever created. Fusing high-tech elements with an epic new “TRANSFORMERS” tale, “Transformers: The Ride–3D” set a new standard in the world of theme park attractions, stretching the medium’s potential as an immersive and powerful storytelling vehicle.
It’s a 3D ride, meaning that you DO have to wear the 3D glasses, but you won’t mind doing it at all. Optimus Prime and his heroic cohort of Autobot soldiers fight Megatron while you are whisked and swirled and buffeted from all angles.
Altogether, these rides are awesome for kids of all ages, and give you entertainment that you just can’t get anywhere else, PERIOD.
For those who like their rides on the scary side, Halloween Horror Nights begins this month and runs select nights September 13 through November 3.
“It’s the place where you come to learn what life is all about.”

It’s sometime during the 1920s in the town of Cherokee Flats, Kansas. Stemming from their differing backgrounds, black mid-teens Newt Winger and Marcus Savage take different approaches to life, especially in coexisting in town with white neighbors, many who are inherently racist, something largely taught to them by their parents and their parents before them. From a loving, supportive family, Newt would like to do the right thing to have a good life, but is often scared to do so. Newt ultimately wants to attend college despite one of his white teachers constantly devaluing him and the other black students in believing they will amount to nothing more than laborers at best. He has to deal with an issue indirectly involving race differences concerning his black girlfriend, Arcella Jefferson, his first love. And he wants to make amends for stealing apples from the white Kliners’ orchard with some other boys, regardless of Mr. Kliner’s initial reaction in and of itself being excessive, probably because black boys were involved. Conversely, Marcus, who has never been shown real love in his life, not even from his abusive widowed father Booker Savage, believes the world, especially the white world, is out to get him, he whose reaction is twice as excessive as any excessive action taken against him. Marcus even believes that Newt is out to get him in quietly not agreeing with the way Marcus deals with his troubles. Newt and Marcus’ relationship has the potential to come to an explosive head when Newt clandestinely witnesses a murder, the truth, contrary to the circumstantial evidence, coming to light which could be the match that lights the powder keg of tense race relations in general in town. As such, Newt has to decide whether to come forward with what he saw. (synopsis from IMDB)
