“Mrs. Robinson, if you don’t mind my saying so, this conversation is getting a little strange.”
A half-century has passed since THE GRADUATE was released just after the Summer of LoveThat technically makes Benjamin Braddock a “baby boomer,” but when viewed through the filter of 50 years it’s clear: Benjamin is the proto-Millennial.
He’s disillusioned, bored and unmotivated — and still only 20. And he’s none too thrilled to enter the real world: No, “plastics” does not sound interesting. Benjamin (Dustin Hoffman) drifts into a sexual affair with Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft), bumbling through seduction, infidelity and the pursuit of what he thinks might be love.
THE GRADUATE is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a rare return to theaters on Sunday, April 23, and Wednesday, April 26, in a newly restored 4K digital presentation from Rialto Pictures, Studiocanal and Fathom Events. THE GRADUATE will screen at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. (local time) each day. Tickets are available now at the Fathom Events website.
Blending observant comedy and biting satire, Mike Nichols’ THE GRADUATE helped pave the way for the youth-driven comedies of the ’70s and ’80s, created a genuine movie star — and reflected the kind of ennui that didn’t have a name then, and is much-discussed now. Supported by an iconic soundtrack by Simon & Garfunkel, THE GRADUATE was one of the decade’s biggest hits — its $140 million box-office gross would be $740 million in today’s dollars … and it remains an insightful and funny exploration into life, love and growing up during uncertain times.
