DEAD AND BURIED screens Midnights this weekend (March 24th and 25th) at The Moolah Theater and Lounge (3821 Lindell Blvd, St. Louis, MO 63108) as part of  Destroy the Brain’s monthly Late Night Grindhouse film series.

DEAD AND BURIED, Lisa Blount, 1981

1981 was a stellar year for horror films! Just ask Andy Triefenbach, who programs at Late Night Grindhouse midnight series. THE EVIL DEAD, THE BURNING, MY BLOODY VALENTINE, THE BEYOND, HOUSE BY THE CEMETARY, and NIGHTMARE have all played midnights at the Late Night Grindhouse monthly film series in recent years and they all celebrate their 36th anniversary in 2017. DEAD AND BURIED, co-written by St. Louis native Dan O’Bannon (two years after he co-wrote ALIEN and 3 years before he wrote and directed RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD – another LNGH fave) may not be as well-known as those shockers, but it stands out as one of the best, and most original horror flicks of the early ‘80s. You might call it a thinking man’s zombie film. The police chief (James Farentino) of Potters Bluff, a small coastal town is puzzled over several bizarre murders that have kept the local mortician (Jack Albertson) busy.

The Late Night Grindhouse gang will be pleased to know that DEAD AND BURIED doesn’t pull it’s punches in the gore department, – featuring several disgusting sequences from effects man Stan Winston including a needle in the eye, a brutal throat slitting sequence and – best of all – a part that sees one man’s face filled with acid! The way that the atmosphere is created in the film is brilliant, with smoke flooding the town’s streets as its inhabitants march down them, which creates a good old fashioned creepy feel. DEAD AND BURIED isn’t devoid in the tension department either, with several scenes that are nail biting and some  final twists that are well-played and give later films like THE SIXTH SENSE a run for their money.

The excellent supporting cast is led by Melody Anderson (FLASH GORDON’s Dale Arden), Robert “Freddy Krueger “Englund, Micheal Pataki (GRAVE OF THE VAMPIRE),and a scary/sexy Lisa Blount! Don’t miss it when DEAD AND BURIED screens midnights this weekend at The Moolah.
