the water diviner

Oscar winning actor Russell Crowe takes to the director’s chair for the first time with his upcoming movie THE WATER DIVINER. Here’s a first look at the brand new trailer and poster for the film.

Starring Russell Crowe (GLADIATOR, A BEAUTIFUL MIND) and Olga Kurylenko (OBLIVION, QUANTUM OF SOLACE), THE WATER DIVINER is an epic adventure set four years after the devastating battle of Gallipoli in Turkey during World War I.

Australian farmer Connor (Crowe) travels to Istanbul to discover the fate of his sons, reported missing in the action, where he forges a relationship with the beautiful Turkish woman (Kurylenko) who owns the hotel in which he stays. Holding on to hope, and with the help of a Turkish Officer, Connor embarks on a journey across the country to find the truth about the fate of his sons. THE WATER DIVINER is an extraordinary tale of love, hope and heroism.

In the spring, a behind the scenes featurette of the film was released. Check it out here.

Most of us took notice of Crowe twenty years ago when the actor first appeared on the scene with the Australian crime drama ROMPER STOMPER (1992), followed by the delightful THE SUM OF US (1994). In March of this year, the Academy Award winning actor portrayed the man chosen by God to undertake a momentous mission of rescue before an apocalyptic flood destroys the world – Darren Aronfsky’s NOAH.

THE WATER DIVINER will be co-distributed by Entertainment One Australia and Universal Pictures Australia in Australia and New Zealand on Boxing Day, December 26, 2014. The film will be distributed by the Weinstein Company in the U.S. – a release date has yet to be announced.

TWILIGHT Returns – Lionsgate Collaborates With Stephenie Meyer And Women In Film On “The Storytellers – New Creative Voices of The Twilight Saga”

THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN-PART 1

Lionsgate is teaming with Facebook, the prestigious Women In Film organization, the crowdsourcing platform Tongal and best-selling Twilight Saga author Stephenie Meyer to create and manage a social media campaign to develop and produce a series of short films directed by aspiring female filmmakers.

The campaign, called “The Storytellers – New Creative Voices of The Twilight Saga,” will include films based on a broad spectrum of characters from the Twilight universe, with guidance provided by Meyer’s encyclopedic The Twilight Saga: Official Illustrated Guide.

The campaign will center on a multiphase contest culminating in the selection of at least five aspiring female filmmakers to direct short films based on characters from the Twilight universe. The films will be produced and directed with the mentorship of a blue chip panel of advisors, which will ultimately select the winning shorts that will premiere exclusively on the Facebook platform next year.

The star-studded group of female panelists will include Stephenie Meyer, actress Kristen Stewart, Academy Award winners Kate Winslet and Octavia Spencer, Jennifer Lee, the award-winning writer and one of the directors of Disney’s global blockbuster Frozen, Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke, Emmy Award-winning actress Julie Bowen, and Women In Film President Cathy Schulman.

Five winning shorts will be financed through production advances, and fans will help select a grand prize winning filmmaker who will receive a cash prize and career opportunities. The short film development and production process will involve extensive fan engagement on the Facebook and Tongal platforms.

Meyer’s Twilight Saga books have sold more than 120 million copies worldwide and have been translated into at least 38 languages around the globe, winning the 2008 British Book Award for “Children’s Book of The Year” for Breaking Dawnand the 2009 Kid’s Choice Award for Favorite Book for the series as a whole. The five films of The Twilight Sagafranchise have grossed more than $3.3 billion at the global box office, ranking among the most successful feature film franchises of all time.

THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN-PART 1

“More people than ever before are creating, discovering and engaging with videos on Facebook,” said Facebook Vice President of Partnerships Dan Rose. “This collaboration with Stephenie Meyer, Lionsgate and Women In Film is a great opportunity to engage Twilight’s massive global audience on Facebook through an innovative premium video program.”

“We’re delighted to expand our longstanding relationship with Stephenie and confident that her participation in theTwilight short films campaign will add an exciting new dimension to the incredible world she has created as an author and producer,” said Lionsgate Chief Executive Officer Jon Feltheimer and Vice Chairman Michael Burns. “Our partnership with Facebook and Women In Film underscores the opportunities for growing our franchises in exciting new directions, and we’re pleased to introduce fresh creative talent to the Twilight universe as part of our commitment to female empowerment in front of and behind the camera.”

“Accessing Hollywood is a momentous challenge, especially for aspiring female filmmakers, so I‘m thrilled that Women In Film has been invited to join Stephenie Meyer, Lionsgate and Facebook to empower new storytellers with diverse voices,” said WIF President Cathy Schulman. “Women In Film is proud to help recruit and mentor female filmmakers as part of a project that illustrates the power of a beloved book and movie franchise to lessen the gender gap in our film community and provide a platform for women’s perspectives to be seen and heard.”

“The female voice is something that has become more and more important to me as I’ve worked in the film industry,” said Meyer. “I’m honored to be working with Women In Film, Lionsgate, and Facebook on a project dedicated to giving more women a chance to be heard creatively.”

Alec Baldwin And Kevin Spacey Starring In DreamWorks Animation’s BOSS BABY

DreamWorks Animation BOSS BABY

Academy Award nominee Alec Baldwin suits up to play the boss (who FYI, is a total baby) in DreamWorks Animation’s upcoming comedy feature BOSS BABY. Joined by two-time Academy Award winner Kevin Spacey who will take on the role of corporate uber-villain (and baby nemesis) Francis E. Francis, the two will duke it out for the proverbial “World’s Best Boss” mug.

Inspired by Marla Frazee’s award-winning picture book of the same name (Publishers Weekly Best Children’s Picture Book of the Year in 2010), the CG film will be released by 20th Century Fox on March 18, 2016.

The film is directed by Tom McGrath (Madagascar franchise, MEGAMIND), produced by Ramsey Naito (The Spongebob Squarepants Movie) and Denise Cascino (Mr. Peabody & Sherman, Megamind) and written by Michael McCullers (Austin Powers films).

BOSS BABY is a fantastical family comedy about the bossiest member in every family – the new guy. From the day his baby brother arrived (in a cab…wearing a suit), seven-year-old Tim knew this fast-talking briefcase-carrying baby (voiced by Baldwin) was trouble – after all, there’s only so much love to go around, right? But as Tim embarks on a mission to win back the sole affection of his parents, he stumbles upon a secret plot by the CEO of Puppy Co. (voiced by Spacey) that threatens to destroy the balance of love in the world – and this brash baby executive masquerading as his new brother is at the center of it all. Now, they must come together as true brothers to stop the dastardly scheme, save their parents, restore order to the world, and prove that love is indeed an infinite force.

A MONSTER CALLS Begins Production – Stars Liam Neeson And Sigourney Weaver

AMonsterCalls

Production has begun on A MONSTER CALLS, directed by Juan Antonio Bayona, Goya Award-winning director of the worldwide smash The Impossible. Participant Media and River Road Entertainment are financing the Apaches Entertainment production, in association with Telecinco Cinema and La Trini Films.

The film, adapted by Patrick Ness from his award-winning children’s fantasy novel, will be released by Focus Features domestically; Universal Pictures International for its theatrical and home entertainment release in Spain; and Lionsgate International is handling foreign sales throughout the rest of the world.

A MONSTER CALLS is slated for a fall 2016 release.

A MONSTER CALLS is a visually spectacular drama about 12-year-old Conor (newcomer Lewis MacDougall) who attempts to deal with his mother’s (Felicity Jones, who stars in Focus’ fall release The Theory of Everything) illness and the bullying of his classmates by escaping into a fantastical world of monsters and fairy tales that explore courage, loss and faith.

The cast also includes Academy Award nominees Liam Neeson, who will star in performance-capture and voiceover as the nocturnally visiting monster of the title, and Sigourney Weaver, who will portray Conor’s maternal grandmother; Toby Kebbell (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), as Conor’s father; and Geraldine Chaplin, who is making her third movie with Mr. Bayona.

The new film is being produced by Belén Atienza, who was a producer on Mr. Bayona’s The Impossible, released by Lionsgate’s Summit label, and The Orphanage; and an executive producer on Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth, which won three Academy Awards. Mr. Bayona won a Goya Award, Spain’s Oscars equivalent, for The Impossible, which grossed more than $180 million at the worldwide box office and which earned actress Naomi Watts an Academy Award nomination.

Mr. Ness wrote the novel based on an original idea by the late Siobhan Dowd. Published in almost 30 languages, the novel has won many prestigious prizes worldwide, including the distinguished Carnegie Medal and, for illustrator Jim Kay, the Kate Greenaway Medal.

A MONSTER CALLS is being executive-produced by Participant’s Jeff Skoll and Jonathan King; River Road’s Bill Pohlad and Mitch Horwits; Mr. Ness; and Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Co-Chairman Patrick Wachsberger. Principal photography will take place in both Spain and England.

A Monster Calls is a beloved and iconic book, and I’m thrilled at the opportunity to create a world of monsters and fantasy that does it justice,” said Mr. Bayona remarked, “I’m also delighted to rejoin much of my creative team fromThe Impossible, and I couldn’t ask for a more talented and prestigious cast, and a more supportive group of studio partners, to help bring this incredible project to the screen.”

The creative team on A MONSTER CALLS also includes production designer Eugenio Caballero, an Academy Award winner for Pan’s Labyrinth who previously collaborated with the director on The Impossible; costume designer Steven Noble (The Theory of Everything); and cinematographer Óscar Faura, who shot both The Impossible and The Orphanage for Mr. Bayona.

Ms. Atienza added, “Juan Antonio’s interpretation will bring this story into his own territory. Once again, we are making a movie with both huge technical challenges and a very intimate story that requires great sensitivity.”

The Academy Celebrates The Opening of The Hollywood Costume Exhibition in Los Angeles

2014-09-29 09.50.16

By Gary Salem and Michelle McCue

“What a costume designer does is a cross between magic and camouflage. We create the illusion of changing the actors into what they are not. We ask the public to believe that every time they see a performer on the screen he’s become a different person.”

Edith Head

On Monday, WAMG attended the press preview for the Victoria and Albert Museum, London and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences groundbreaking multimedia exhibition Hollywood Costume in the historic Wilshire May Company building.

Taking five years to create, this exhibition is the kickoff for the whole Academy Museum of Motion Pictures.

Emphasizing how costumes are so important in creating characters, this one-of-a-kind exhibition comes with its own film score, enhanced with dazzling animations and screenplay excerpts.

Organized by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (V&A), and sponsored by Swarovski, this ticketed exhibition explores the central role of costume design – from the glamorous to the very subtle – as an essential tool of cinematic storytelling. Upon entering, visitors are greeted by this video showcase.

Featuring more than 150 costumes, the Academy’s presentation includes Jared Leto’s costume from Dallas Buyers Club (Kurt and Bart, 2013) – a recent acquisition from the Academy’s Collection – as well as costumes from such recent releases including The Hunger Games (Judianna Makovsky, 2012), Django Unchained (Sharen Davis, 2012), Lee Daniels’ The Butler (Ruth E. Carter, 2013), The Wolf of Wall Street (Sandy Powell, 2013), American Hustle (Michael Wilkinson, 2013), and The Great Gatsby (Catherine Martin, 2013).

In addition, Hollywood Costume showcases the Academy’s pair of the most famous shoes in the world – the original ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz (Adrian, 1939) shown with Dorothy’s blue and white gingham pinafore dress.

Upending the conventions of what is considered “costume,” Hollywood Costume reveals what is hidden in plain sight: that films are about people, and the art of the costume designer helps create their characters.

On view October 2, 2014, through March 2, 2015, the exhibition brings together iconic costumes from Hollywood’s Golden Age, including costumes for Marlene Dietrich from Morocco (1930) and Angel (1937) designed by Travis Banton, and from modern classics such as Mary Poppins (Tony Walton, 1964), Raiders of the Lost Ark (Deborah Nadoolman, 1981) and Titanic (Deborah L. Scott, 1997).

Hollywood Costume is curated by Deborah Nadoolman Landis, Academy Award-nominated costume designer and founding director of UCLA’s David C. Copley Center for the Study of Costume Design, whose credits include National Lampoon’s Animal House (1978), Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), Coming to America (1988) and the music video for Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” (1983); with Sir Christopher Frayling (Professor Emeritus of Cultural History, Royal College of Art), and set and costume designer and V&A Assistant Curator Keith Lodwick.

“Cinematic icons are born when the audience falls deeply in love with the people in the story. And that’s what movies and costume design are all about,” notes Landis.

The collectors who have loaned to the exhibition include major motion picture studios, costume houses, actors, public museums and archives, and private individuals.

Swarovski celebrates its long-standing relationship with Hollywood and the film industry – working closely with numerous award-winning costume designers on past and modern day films. The crystal house has provided the all-important sparkle to Hollywood’s wardrobes since the 1930s, when Swarovski crystals began to light up the silver screen in classic films like Gone with the Wind, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and Breakfast at Tiffany’s. In recent years, Swarovski has worked closely with talents in costume and set design on blockbusters including Black Swan, Skyfall and The Great Gatsby, and its crystals have been the key creative ingredient in the dazzling set design for the Academy Awards since 2007.

The exhibition explores the central role of costume design – from the very glamorous to the very subtle – as an essential tool of cinematic storytelling. Swarovski has worked hand in hand with 31 of the costume designers whose work is featured within Hollywood Costume and was used as a creative ingredient in more than 18 of the costumes featured the exhibition.

This innovative exhibition takes visitors on a non-chronological, four-gallery journey that tells the story of costume design from early Charlie Chaplin (The Tramp, 1912) to Man of Steel (James Acheson and Michael Wilkinson, 2013).

Hollywood Costume includes montages, animation, film clips, and projections, supported by a specially commissioned score written by British composer Julian Scott. The clothes are exhibited alongside quotes and interviews with costume designers, directors, and actors discussing the role that costume plays in creating the characters on screen.

2014-09-29 11.02.20

Act One: Deconstruction introduces the role of costume design in cinematic storytelling. This section explores the link between clothing and identity and how designers bring characters to life. Deconstruction features contemporary and period costumes from films including The Social Network (Jacqueline West, 2010), Dreamgirls (Sharen Davis, 2006), Fight Club (Michael Kaplan, 1999), The Addams Family (Ruth Myers, 1991), Dangerous Liaisons, (James Acheson, 1988), Barry Lyndon (Ulla-Britt Söderlund, Milena Canonero, 1975), The Virgin Queen (Charles LeMaire, Mary Wills, 1955) and Mildred Pierce (Milo Anderson, 1945).

The costume designer’s research process is revealed using designs and sketches, costume fittings, budget breakdowns, and script pages with dialogue containing personality-defining clues.

2014-09-29 11.16.06

Act Two: Dialogue examines the creative collaboration among great filmmakers, actors and costume designers. Using archival film footage as well as specially commissioned interviews, Dialogue explores five key director/designer pairings: Alfred Hitchcock and Edith Head, who worked together on 11 films including The Birds (1963); Tim Burton and Colleen Atwood, whose films together have spanned from Edward Scissorhands (1990) to Dark Shadows (2012); Martin Scorsese and Sandy Powell, who have teamed on films from Gangs of New York (2002) to The Wolf of Wall Street (2013); and Mike Nichols and Ann Roth, who have worked together for over 20 years on films from Silkwood (1983) to Closer (2004).

The Academy’s presentation of Hollywood Costume features a new interview with writer-director Quentin Tarantino and costume designer Sharen Davis, who collaborated on Django Unchained (2012).

2014-09-29 11.20.45

This section also explores how costume designers have worked within the rapidly changing social and technological landscape of the last century: from silent to sound, from black and white to Technicolor, and from the studio system of Hollywood’s Golden Age to multi-national corporations and art house “indies.”

Censorship, remakes and genre are deconstructed in a section devoted to historic and social context. This shows how costume designers have embraced the innovations in technology and animation, such as Joanna Johnston’s design for the animated character Jessica Rabbit in Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988), and the designs integrating motion-capture (“mo-cap”), exemplified by characters from Avatar (Mayes C. Rubio, Deborah L. Scott, 2009).

2014-09-29 11.22.42

Act Three: Finale presents the most memorable and treasured costumes in cinema history, for Hollywood heroes, leading ladies, and femme fatales alike. They include those for Daniel Craig as James Bond in Casino Royale (Lindy Hemming, 2006) Marilyn Monroe as “The Girl” with the pleatedwhite halter dress in The Seven Year Itch (Travilla, 1955), Barbra Streisand as Fanny Brice in Funny Girl (Irene Sharaff, 1968) and Sharon Stone as Catherine Tramell in Basic Instinct (Ellen Mirojnick, 1992).

Iconic fantasy, sci-fi, and superhero costumes are also on view, from films including Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Jany Temime, 2009), The Twilight Saga: New Moon (Tish Monaghan, 2009), Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (April Ferry, 2003) and Bram Stoker’s Dracula (Eiko Ishioka, 1992).

2014-09-29 11.33.07

The Finale explores how beloved characters continue to inspire film lovers, ignite fashion trends, and enrich international popular culture.

To complement the exhibition, the Academy will present The Perfect Match: Hollywood Costume Collaborations, a screening series exploring the collaborative partnerships between costume designers and directors. Several designers will appear in person to introduce their films and discuss their experiences, including costume designer Mary Zophres (directors Joel and Ethan Coen), Deborah Nadoolman Landis (John Landis) and Marilyn Vance (John Hughes).

Ticket holders for the Hollywood Costume exhibition will receive free same-day admission to Hollywood Costume-related public programs.

“The moviegoing experience is evolving quickly and profoundly, and Netflix is unquestionably at the forefront of that movement,” said TWC Co-Chairman Harvey Weinstein. “We are tremendously excited to be continuing our great relationship with Netflix and bringing to fans all over the world the latest chapter in this amazing and intriguing story.”

“IMAX has a terrific opportunity, via this partnership with Netflix, to release Crouching Tiger – a high-quality, action-packed film that is right in our wheelhouse — at the end of the summer blockbuster season,” said Greg Foster, Senior Executive Vice President, IMAX Corp. and CEO of IMAX Entertainment. “We are particularly hopeful it will play in our highly successful China market. In territories where we simultaneously release with Netflix, we are excited to offer consumers the option of deciding how, when and where they want to view the film, and exhibitors the opportunity to participate in this alternative form of content in a new and innovative way.”

Based on the acclaimed novel, Iron Knight, Silver Vase, by Wang Dulu (book 5 in the Crane-Iron Pentalogy) and written by John Fusco (Marco Polo) the new film is produced by Harvey Weinstein (Academy Award winner – The King’s Speech, The Artist) and Peter Berg (Emmy Award winner – Friday Night Lights; Lone Survivor, Hancock) and Sarah Aubrey (Friday Night Lights; Lone Survivor, Hancock) and executive produced by Morten Tyldum (Headhunters, The Imitation Game), Ralph Winter (X-Men franchise), Anthony Wong, and Bey Logan (The Medallion).
