YOU’RE NEXT – The Review

Youre-Next-Still

Review by Michael Haffner

It seems each year we’re treated to another standard home invasion film, rife with your standard horror clichés: a romantic couple is isolated in the woods; intruders attempt to enter the home; screaming ensues.  One could even say the slasher films of the 80’s like FRIDAY THE 13TH is an extension of this idea, but often with those films you end up rooting for the killer Jason more than you do the mindless teenagers. This sub-genre hasn’t worn out its welcome yet like some have said about the current fad in “zombies.”

Yet, it should be noted that this is the second film this year – after the political home invasion THE PURGE – to attempt to bring something new to the fold.  YOU’RE NEXT, much like last year’s equally entertaining CABIN IN THE WOODS, is a horror film that knows exactly what it’s doing and plays with audience’s expectations and knowledge of the horror genre.  But what director Adam Wingard and writer Simon Barrett have achieved with YOU’RE NEXT is that they have combined that self-aware, “punk-rock” attitude of CABIN IN THE WOODS but added a hell of a lot more scares.  Why it took Lionsgate so long to release both films is beyond me – both films sat on the shelf for over two years after each were made and purchased by the company – but at least we can all rejoice in the fact that the best horror film of the year is finally here.

The film opens with the writer and director’s first wink at the audience. A random couple is seen just after having sex (Never have sex in a horror movie!) and without even knowing their names they are quickly dispatched by a trio of intruders wearing animal masks. We then flash-forward and meet a quirky but seemingly normal family as they retreat to their summer home for the parent’s wedding anniversary.  Crispian (AJ Bowen) is anxious and a little nervous to introduce his new girlfriend Erin (Sharni Vinson) to his family.  It isn’t until a random attack during dinner by the same animal masked intruders that Erin surprises the family the most when her instincts and survival skills come out.

Sharni Vinson (STEP UP 3D) is a revelation as the waifish and innocent appearing girl turned warrior woman.  Wingard has assembled an eclectic cast of horror vets (Barbara Crampton from RE-ANIMATOR, AJ Bowen A HORRIBLE WAY TO DIE) and indie directors (Joes Swanberg from this year’s DRINKING BUDDIES and Ti West from HOUSE OF THE DEVIL) to round out the family unit, which brings a surprising amount of humor and heart to the scenes prior to the dinner attack.  But this is no doubt Vinson’s film, and she handles the task as well as she is ready to dispatch the intruders.  One of the refreshing elements about YOU’RE NEXT is the film’s attempt to redefine what it means to be the “final girl.”  Erin never just runs upstairs and hides.  She’s a force to be reckoned with and her interactions with the family as they try to survive seem natural and believable.  When one member suggests they go downstairs and hide in the basement, she replies with “they would just pour gasoline down the steps and light a match.”  Both the writer and director have slowly emerged as figures in the indie horror scene.  YOU’RE NEXT could have easily gone the way of being another gory and mean-spirited stab at the sub-genre.  Thankfully, we are giving something a little more fun and intelligent that isn’t concerned with taking out each of our heroes in “creative” ways.

Between the animal masks and the idea of the seemingly normal female character fighting back against her intruders, the film does remind me of a little known 1985 Aussie film FORTRESS.  But again, what sets this apart from that film and many films in this home invasion genre is the amount of humor and overall sense of fun that is injected into the film.  For once we are given a character in a horror film that is already three steps ahead of the audience.  During the press screening I attended, the audience was cheering out loud after she dispatched each intruder.  When was the last time you found yourself rooting for the victim and not Jason Vorhees, Freddy Krueger, and Michael Meyers?  This may seem like a bizarre concept after the horror genre just ended the “torture-porn” days of seeing innocent victims being mutilated in the SAW and HOSTEL films.  YOU’RE NEXT is a refreshing take on the home-invasion genre and exactly what horror fans need right now; a horror film that seems inspired by the classics while simultaneously paving the way for the future.

FIN04_YNext_1Sht_Payoff_VF

Lionsgate’s YOU’RE NEXT takes one of the most terrifying film genres, the home-invasion movie, and turns it on its head—adding dimension, drama, and bone-chilling realism to one of life’s most universal fears. The story follows an upper-class family, the Davisons, who are as rich as they are estranged. In an earnest attempt to bring everyone back together, Aubrey and Paul Davison decide to celebrate their wedding anniversary by inviting their four children and their significant others to a family reunion at their remote and slightly rundown weekend estate.

At first it seems like decades-old sibling rivalries will derail any hope of reconciliation. But that quickly, and very abruptly, becomes the least of the Davisons’ concerns when their home comes under siege by a mask-wearing team of crossbow-bearing assailants. The family has no idea who’s attacking them, why they’re under attack, or if the attackers are inside or outside the cavernous, creaking house. All they know for certain is that nobody is safe.

Arm yourself for the clever and absolutely frightening horror, full of unexpected twists, that will keep you up at night!

YOU’RE NEXT – Fantastic Fest Review

UPDATE: Aside from the film being picked up by Lionsgate just before it’s first (and only) screening at Fantastic Fest, YOU’RE NEXT garnered the following awards… Audience Award (Runner Up), Horror Feature – Best Picture; Best Director for Adam Wingard; Best Screenplay for Simon Barrett; and Best Actress for Sharni Vinson.

YOU’RE NEXT comes from writer Simon Barrett and director Adam Wingard. This partnership created 2010’s A HORRIBLE WAY TO DIE, which introduced genre fans to a new force in genre filmmaking. Proving to be one of the most anticipated films of Fantastic Fest 2011, YOU’RE NEXT has already been acquired by Lionsgate, which is good news in that it will get a wide theatrical release, but bad news in that anyone reading this review who has not already seen the film will likely have to wait until 2012.

A young, foreign exchange student named Erin (Sharni Vinson) accompanies her college professor boyfriend Crispin (AJ Bowen) for his family reunion at their large house in the woods. Right away its apparent that this family doesn’t get along. When the family sits down for their first dinner together in years, the ensuing dialogue is as darkly comical as it is thick with tension, brimming with anger and rage brewing in a very shallow cup. The dinner scene sets up the family dynamic perfectly, where “dysfunctional” is an understatement.

Wingard and Barrett waste no time moving into the beef of the film, developing just enough back story to put the audience into place, allowing the viewer to fill in the blanks and piece together the mystery that unfolds during the ensuing carnage. YOU’RE NEXT features three unknown killers who crash the family dinner, all of whom wear animal Halloween masks: a fox, a sheep, and a tiger. The mask designs are simplistic but more real than cartoon, allowing the actors body language an increased level of creepiness, such as when a head is cocked, or even a long stare become far more frightening.

YOU’RE NEXT is primarily a home invasion horror flick, but also a black comedy. As the body count rises, the mystery slowly begins to unfold. Forced to take action where the family hesitates, Erin assumed the lead in the family’s struggle to survive, revealing at one point a simple unexpected explanation that perfectly sets her up as the strong female heroin we rarely see in cinema these days. Sharni Vinson proves herself as a starlet in the making for action and genre films, a goal she herself admits aspiring to in the Q&A that followed the screening. Vinson has all of the feminine bravado of ALIENS-era Sigourney Weaver combined with the capable damsel in distress quality of the HALLOWEEN-era Jamie Lee Curtis.

AJ Bowen’s and Joe Swanson‘s portrayal as rival brothers Crispin and Drake is sharp and biting, constantly at each others throats. Every line of dialogue Swanson utters is a gem, typically sarcastic, always judgmental and confrontational. Their mother Aubrey also stands out with a tremendous, emotionally charged supporting performance from Barbara Crampton. Rounding out the recognizable cast is a short, but noteworthy cameo role from filmmaker Ti West as Tariq, a role that serves as a genre wink, leading the dinner scene into the abrupt change of pace that holds for the remainder of the film.

YOU’RE NEXT is a great homage to slasher flicks and slapstick comedy (in the writer’s words, but I found the slapstick less apparent) but I also found connection to ’70s and ’80s era action cinema, from the strong heroin to the music for the film. In a similar sort of nostalgia, the creativity of the kills and style of violent choreography stood out as a major character in its own right, defining the fun-filled return of R-rated, in your face action/horror/comedy.

Lionsgate Finds Its ‘NEXT’ Great Horror Film

Company Acquires Adam Wingard’s YOU’RE NEXT

SANTA MONICA, CA (September 21, 2011) – LIONSGATE today announced that it has acquired U.S. and Canadian distribution rights to YOU’RE NEXT, following its screenings at the Toronto International Film Festival. The announcement was made jointly by Joe Drake, Lionsgate’s co-COO and Motion Picture Group President, and Jason Constantine, President of Acquisitions and Co-Productions.

Directed by Adam Wingard from a script penned by Simon Barrett, YOU’RE NEXT is a petrifying horror story starring Sharni Vinson, Joe Swanberg, A.J. Bowen, Nicholas Tucci and Barbara Crampton. Snoot Entertainment’s Keith Calder and Jessica Wu produced the project with Simon Barrett and Kim Sherman. The film reunites the principal cast from Wingard and Barrett’s shocking serial-killer thriller A HORRIBLE WAY TO DIE, which screened at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival.

In YOU’RE NEXT, during a family reunion getaway, the Davison family comes under a sadistic attack. When Crispian Davison (Bowen) brings his new girlfriend (Vinson) along to celebrate the wedding anniversary of his parents (Moran and Crampton), the family’s evening together is shattered when a gang of mysterious killers begin to hunt the family down with brutal precision. Unfortunately for the killers however, one of the victims harbors a secret talent for fighting back.

Jason Constantine negotiated the deal on behalf of Lionsgate with Eda Kowan, SVP of Acquisitions and Co-Productions, and Wendy Jaffe, the Acquisitions and Co-Production team’s EVP of Business & Legal Affairs. Snoot Entertainment is represented by CAA, who negotiated the sale on their behalf with Erik Hyman of Loeb & Loeb.

“This project represents everything that we look for in a horror film,” explains Constantine of the company’s decision to acquire the film. “It is a celebration of its genre, featuring top notch performances from a sophisticated script, brilliantly directed, that will leave audiences on the edge of their seats – when they’re not jumping out of them.” Added Drake, “Lionsgate has had much success in the horror space, particularly with truly creative, daring genre films such as this one that we are uniquely suited to market equally boldly. This film is a perfect example of Lionsgate sticking to our roots and continuing to speak to an audience of horror fans that we know and love.”

“We are blown away by the passion the Lionsgate team has for our film, and are honored to be working with the finest horror franchise marketers and distributors in the world,”  added producer Keith Calder.
