‘Sherlock Holmes’ Sequel Already Afoot

It’s not quite time for Robert Downey, Jr. to put away the pipe, violin, and magnifying glass just yet.  According to The Hollywood Reporter, plans are already being put in place at Warner Brothers for a sequel to ‘Sherlock Holmes,’ which is still three months away from seeing release.  The studio has brought on Kieran and Michele Mulroney (‘Paper Man’ and ‘Justice League: Mortal’) to pen a screenplay for the follow-up.

But Warner is not stopping with the screenplay being worked on.  Brad Pitt has already had discussions with producers to step into the role of Moriarty, Holmes’ arch nemesis throughout the series of books by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.  There has been rumors that Pitt appears in the upcoming film as Moriarty, but, those who have read the screenplay, claim the character only appears in shadows and remains unrecognizable.  This new bit of news, and the possibility of Pitt stepping in, could have WB and Ritchie racing to add a shot or two of Pitt as the villain before the film’s release at Christmas.

Much of the cast, Downey as Holmes, Jude Law as Dr. Watson, and Rachel McAdams as Irene Adler, is expected to return.  So, too, is director Guy Ritchie, who is also making plans to take on the ‘Lobo’ film for WB.

‘Sherlock Holmes’ is set to release on December 25th, 2009.

‘Trick ‘r Treat’s Final Trailer Drops

trick r treat

I’ve come to the conclusion that if a movie being incessantly held back generates as much anticipation for it as seen in the case of Mike Dougherty’s ‘Trick ‘r Treat,’ studios are free to delay their movies as much as possible.   Of course, that’s not likely to happen, and the level of anticipation for ‘Trick ‘r Treat’ stems from the rave reviews it’s gathering up.

You can see excerpts from some of these rave review in this final trailer released today, courtesy of Yahoo! Movies, including Ain’t It Cool’s declaration that ‘Trick ‘r Treat’ is “The best pure Halloween movie ever made.”   We’ll just see about that, says the die-hard Carpenter fan.   Nonetheless, this trailer sure amps up whatever excitement one might have had for the film to begin with.   In a nutshell, this movie looks to be one of the best horror films in recent memory, and everything those who have seen it say just reinforces these claims.

Brandon Routh’s ‘Superman’ Contract Has Expired

It has been more than three years since Bryan Singer’s ‘Superman Returns’ failed to make serious bank, and some are questioning how long we will have to wait for another Man of Steel feature film.   Recently, Omelete.com, a Portuguese website, caught up with Brandon Routh on the set of ‘Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World,’ and ‘Superman’ related questions were raised. ‘Half-Blood Prince’ Moved Up Two Days

Now is the time where big, Summer blockbusters start shifting their release dates around and around to get that perfect spot.   Word came down yesterday that ‘Star Trek’ would be bowing about five hours prior to its scheduled, midnight release and screenings would begin at 7PM on May 7th.   Now comes word from Warner that ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’ will be releasing on Wednesday, July 15th as opposed to Friday, the 17th.

This gives ‘Half-Blood Prince’ a nice running start towards the weekend box office.   This also gives ‘Half-Blood Prince’ an unneeded head start on other films bowing that weekend, ‘(500) Days of Summer’ and ‘All the Boys Love Mandy Lane.’

‘Order of the Phoenix’ pulled this same maneuver when it was released in 2007.   It pulled in $44 million that Wednesday, and ended the five-day run with $139 million in pocket.   There aren’t any other films like ‘Half-Blood Prince’ getting releases around this same time, so expect box office totals to be fully in the little wizard’s favor.

The film was originally slated for release on November 21st, 2008, but Warner pushed it towards a Summer release due to having an open slot at this time in July.

Ending to ‘Terminator Salvation’ Changed Due to Internet Leak

terminator-salvation3

After watching the newest trailer for ‘Terminator Salvation’ for about the 18th time, I recalled that the ending for the film had been leaked online (AICN to be precise) at some point last year. Â  It came to me like a rejected memory, something from my childhood that I wanted to forget but could never do. Â  I didn’t mind the ending they had planned, and, in fact, it went along pretty nicely with the dark tone the trailer was leading me to believe the film had taken.

Well, that was then. Â  This is now. Â  Because of that leak last year, Warner Bros. decided to pull a little switcheroo and has opted for a different ending altogether. Â  A source from WB revealed this on Saturday to Clint over at Moviehole. Â  The source claims to have seen the film and that there had been some big changes to the film over the past few months.

“The ending doesn’t resemble the previous one in any shape or form.”

Clint says that, strangely enough, it was Seth Rogen who made mention to him before anyone else that WB was planning a change and that they were “as red as Daredevil” about the original ending being leaked. Â  The new ending, according to the WB source, is “A complete [180] from the original film. Works better. Probably not as hard to swallow. Real good though.”

We will all find out what this new ending is come May 21st when ‘Terminator Salvation’ comes out.
