New ‘Wolfman’ Posters Unveiled

It’s that time of year where Universal Studios Hollywood rolls out their annual Halloween Horror Nights.   This year, they have the park lined with new posters and banners for ‘The Wolfman’.   Shock Till You Drop scored a few pics, low-res, unfortunately, of these posters.

Also, the Terror Tram Tour at Halloween Horror Nights concludes with the teaser trailer for ‘The Wolfman’.   Evidently, this shows no new footage from what was already shown at Comic-Con, but it should be released to theaters soon enough.

All in all, these are okay posters, especially the one just above with Benicio looking all red-eyed and wolfy.   Not sure what the point of the Anthony Hopkins poster is other than to you market the fact that the Academy Award winner is in the film.   The one with Emily Blunt looks kinda Sci-Fi Original-iffic, but it’s atmospheric, at the least.

Universal Investing in Park Chan-wook’s Latest

If you’re a fan of Asian film, than you’ve more than likely seen ‘Oldboy’ or any other of director Park Chan-wook’s “revenge trilogy”, ‘Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance’ and ‘Lady Vengeance’.   The Korean filmmaker is currently hard at work on a vampire movie called ‘Thirst’, and he’s getting backing by Universal Studios among others, says this article from Variety.

This will be the first time that an American studio has backed a Korean film before the film’s local release.   Universal is teaming with Focus Pictures for the investment and will be behind the film’s distribution here in the states.

“‘Thirst’ is especially exciting for us, as it’s the first time a major studio has co-produced with a South Korean entertainment company in this way,” said UPI studio proxy, Christian Grass.   “Park Chan-wook is one of the most talented and influential Korean directors working today.   We’re really pleased to be partnering with CJ on this production.”

The film centers around a failed experiment that turns a priest into a member of the undead.   It is planned to be finished in time for festival scheduling in mid-2009.

Who Will Direct Universal’s “Wolfman” Remake? Place Your Bets.

So last week the director of the Universal remake of The Wolfman took a hike, citing “creative differences”. That was Mark Romanek, director of One Hour Photo and some truly great music videos (99 Problems, anyone?). The Wolfman remake stars Benicio Del Toro and Anthony Hopkins, but you already knew this, you clever reader.

However, since then Universal’s been courting a variety of replacements and the internet is all a twitter about who will step in replace him. Here are the current contenders who’ve made their way to Studio City (former home of the Back To The Future ride!) to talk to Universal. Read this list and imagine how different each version of this movie could be with one of them:

Brett Ratner (Rush Hour 3, X-Men 3)

Frank Darabont (Shawshank Redemption, The Mist)

James Mangold (3:10 To Yuma)

Joe Johnston (Hidalgo, Jurassic Park 3)

Bill Condon (Dreamgirls)

Wow, that’s quite a range of filmmakers, eh? I guess the question is would you rather have your Wolfman remake full of moments like this:

Or moments like this:

Hmm. Of course, Collider.com is now reporting that John Landis is talking to Universal as well. You might remember he directed this little thing called An American Werewolf In London, it’s only THE BEST WEREWOLF FILM EVER MADE. Universal, don’t blow this one. If you trick me into watching another Van Helsing, I know where you live and I can get there in twenty minutes.
