THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE 3 (FINAL SEQUENCE) – The Review

hc3_image

100% Politically incorrect. 100% Medically accurate, so claims Tom Six. 100% complete garbage. Harsh? Not really.

I am not going to step onto a soap box and preach to you about how some films have gone too far. Please, go further. I am not going to rant about how certain things should never be portrayed on film. Please, push the envelope and break boundaries. I will not call for censorship and restraint in exercising free speech. Please, by all means, shock and disgust us till the cows come home. However, what I will do, is to persistently and relentlessly call things as I see them.

This movie is garbage. Not because its vulgar or offensive, but because its a failure. I have seen the entire trilogy now, and while in all honesty I can admit that I am no big fan of the franchise as a whole, my disdain reaches its monumental peak with THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE 3 (FINAL SEQUENCE).

Writer and director Tom Six, I presume, has delusions of grandeur around the misguided endeavor to become the next John Waters… I shutter to think. No, sir. I admire the tenacity, but no. I equate these movies more to the ranks of Troma, and yet I enjoy most Troma films. What is the difference, you ask? Intent. Context. Story.

Despite not rating it highly, I actually give THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE — the first installment — fair marks for originality, a daring disregard for consequences and the spirit of breaking rules and ruffling feathers. With that said, a great film it was not. THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE 2 received even less praise from me, for reasons you can read in my review, but everything that made the first film original and daring and that made the second film over the top and grotesquely enjoyable in a twisted sort of late night cultish way, all of that has gone completely MIA in the third film.

So, what remains? Let me illustrate. Did you notice how I plugged my own review for the second film in the previous paragraph? Now, imagine if I were to do that in each and every paragraph of this review. THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE 3 attempts to poke fun at itself, repeatedly referring to the first two films by way of integrating them into the story. Everyone’s favorite little round oddity, Laurence R. Harvey, returns again, this time playing Dwight Butler, a Hitler-stache sporting accountant for a prison. Dwight is a fan of the first two films, and with the current system failing as a deterrent to criminals, he is desperately trying to convince the warden that he has the answer to their problems in his HUMAN CENTIPEDE DVDs.

Unfortunately for Dwight, the warden is a tough nut to crack. Warden Bill Boss, played by the creepy Dieter Laser from the first two films as well, is an assault on the senses. I can honestly say that, while watching Harvey play Dwight, I can grin a little. Conversely, watching Laser play Warden Boss is a fate worse than being strapped down and forced to watch every episode of The Bachelorette CLOCKWORK ORANGE style.

THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE 3 offers Dieter Laser spewing sexist, racist, and all around offensively senseless jibberish, screaming and convulsing all over the big screen while Harvey’s Dwight persistently nags at him to listen to his idea to turn the rowdy inmates into a massive human centipede using the medically accurate concept from the first two movies, while porn star turned “actress” Bree Olson provides eye candy as the sheepish, intellectually dull secretary/Warden’s play thing.

Still interested? But wait, there’s more. You would think Dwight were the central character. No. Harvey had his 15 minutes of fame as the central character in part 2. In part 3, its Laser’s show. Despite the title, the creation of the infamous human centipede takes place almost entirely in the last act, and a quick one at that. Until that time, we get copious amounts of Laser acting like a complete and total raving lunatic… but, hey, maybe that’s what will ultimately sell the movie, but if you expect it to be anything like the first two films, beware.

THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE 3, for those gorehounds out there, is also a let down. You saw the height of gore in part 2. Part 3 offers a key scene of testicular terror, but aside from that, the few scenes of disgust that are present equate to sight gags and gross-out humor, but nothing truly graphic.

Finally, for good measure, THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE 3 provides a cameo by Tom Six as himself — big surprise — and features Eric Roberts as the Governor seeking re-election, relying on Warden Boss and Dwight to turn their numbers around and make him look good. As for Roberts, not sure how this movie is supposed to make him look good, but I certainly hope he wasn’t that hard up for cash. Watching him in this movie, it became abundantly clear he had better things to be doing.

Overall Rating: 1 out of 5 stars

IFC Midnight Presents A Live Chat With Writer-Director Tom Six Of THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE FIRST And FULL SEQUENCE

IFC Midnight announced today that Tom Six, the writer and director of THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE FIRST and FULL SEQUENCE will be participating in a live chat on Friday, January 27th at 7pm EST while the un-cut version of the controversial horror film THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE PART 2 (FULL SEQUENCE), is available on Facebook’s new Social Cinema. Viewers are now able to view some of the most gruesome and graphic scenes known in cinematic history! Users will be able to pre-order a ticket to the event beginning today to ensure that they are guaranteed a “seat” to watch the film with Tom Six live. He will answer questions and provide commentary and insight into the making of the controversial film. THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE PART 2 (FULL SEQUENCE), along with its predecessor THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE (FIRST SEQUENCE), is available on Facebook for one-month before it hits its DVD release on February 14th.

THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE PART 2 (FULL SEQUENCE) was originally released by IFC Films on October 7th, 2011 followed by its Video on Demand premiere on October 12th. The film, a sequel to Six’s original film THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE (FIRST SEQUENCE), focuses on a new villain named Martin (Lawrence R. Harvey) who is a mentally disturbed loner who lives with his mother in a bleak housing project. Martin works the night shift as a security guard in an equally grim and foreboding underground parking complex. To escape his dreary existence, Martin loses himself in the fantasy world of the cult horror film THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE (FIRST SEQUENCE), fetishizing the meticulous surgical skills of the gifted Dr. Heiter, whose knowledge of the human gastrointestinal system inspires Martin to attempt the unthinkable.

THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE (FIRST SEQUENCE) opened in the Spring of 2010 and became a cultural phenomenon. It was discussed on shows including the primetime Emmys, South Park, Parks and Recreation, and 30 Rock.  The first film featured an obsessed doctor who surgically joins his unsuspecting victims together, and was one of IFC’s biggest on-demand successes of all time, while also continuously selling out midnight screenings nationwide.   The original film premiered at Fantastic Fest in 2009, receiving the awards for Best Horror Film and Best Actor, and also took home Best Picture at the 2009 Scream Fest. The film also won Most Memorable Mutilation at the 2010 Scream Awards.

IFC Midnight is a sister division to IFC Films and Sundance Selects, and is owned and operated by AMC Networks Inc.

THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE 2 (FULL SEQUENCE) | Now On SundanceNOW While Still In Theaters

Just in time for Halloween, one of the year’s most controversial movies, THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE 2 (Full Sequence), is now available on SundanceNOW.com while it is still in theaters. Too terrified to check it out in theaters? Now you can watch one of the most harrowing and terrifying films ever conceived, featuring a central character that makes FIRST SEQUENCE’s Dr. Heiter seem downright cuddly in comparison, from the comfort of home.

What better way to spend Halloween than with Martin, a mentally disturbed loner so obsessed with THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE (First Sequence) that he sets into motion a plan to emulate Heiter’s centipede by creating his own longer version. But Martin lacks the surgical skill, medical instruments and operating theater necessary to create a larger centipede in the image of Dr. Heiter’s masterpiece, so he makes use of materials at hand: duct tape, staple gun, household tools and fanboy moxie.

MEET MARTIN…

Martin is a mentally disturbed loner who lives with his nagging mother in a bleak London housing project, where loud neighbors and cramped living conditions threaten to plunge this victim of sexual and psychological abuse over the edge.

He works the night shift as a security guard in an underground parking garage, where customers and their vehicles come and go as he indulges his obsession with THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE (FIRST SEQUENCE) watching the film over and over on the small TV set in his office and meticulously examining the scrapbook he has lovingly filled with memorabilia from the film.

Pushed to the brink by his harridan mother, haunted by the teasing voices of his abusive and incarcerated father, Martin sets into motion his plan to emulate Heiter’s centipede by creating his own version, in a rented warehouse, which he begins to fill with victims.

What follows is one of the most harrowing and terrifying films ever conceived, featuring a central character that makes FIRST SEQUENCE’s Dr. Heiter seem downright cuddly in comparison. THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE (FINAL SEQUENCE) is a triumph in biological horror by one of the new masters of the horror film.

Starring: Laurence R. Harvey, Ashlynn Yennie, Dominic Borrelli, and Vivien Bridson
Directed by: Tom Six

NOTE : This film is being released unrated and contains very graphic and disturbing imagery.

THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE 2 (Full Sequence) – Fantastic Fest Review

WARNING: This review may contain “spoilers.”

Tom Six is definitely good at one thing; he can get a massive amount of attention — good and bad — for his films, and in show business, all publicity is good publicity, right? Written and directed by Tom Six, who first revealed himself to mass audiences in 2008 with THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE (First Sequence), is clearly taking the path of William Castle, although his films more resemble the work of Uwe Boll. Castle’s films were fun and had redeeming qualities. I wish I could say that about THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE 2 (Full Sequence) but, it’s not in me to tell such a bald-faced lie.

Let’s talk about THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE (First Sequence) just for a moment… In the original film, Tom Six had actually created a fun, weird little story — the key here being the presence of a story — with some character development. He was able to pull a creepy, cool performance from Dieter Lasser as Dr. Heiter. Where the first film succeeded at producing a memorable lead character with cult classic potential, the sequel fails on almost every level to follow up with an equally unique character.

THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE 2 (Full Sequence) takes place in London and follows a short, tubby man-child named Martin (Laurence R. Harvey) that still lives at home with his depressed mother and works as a parking garage attendant. Martin never speaks a word throughout the entire film, only making occasional awkward noises and giggles, repeatedly sticking his fingers in his mouth like a toddler that needs constantly be told “don’t put that in your mouth.” Admittedly, there are moments in the first half of the film where this shtick produces some laughs, but the gimmick eventually gets old, especially in the second half when it’s overshadowed by the graphic carnival of pointless carnage.

Tom Six chose to film HC2 entirely in black and white, and with that the cinematography is accomplished, not spectacular, but gives the film a different look. Part of me feels like the choice to film in black and white was to reduce the cost of post-production, but that’s nothing more than speculation. If Tom Six was shooting for creating an over-the-top, gut-emptying shockfest of a film, sticking to color would have made more sense. What the black and white does is to quell (ever-so-slightly) the magnitude of the imagery he captures on film.

What is so “bad” about THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE 2 (Full Sequence) you ask? I have to bring up John Waters. Sorry, John. I love you. Waters folded the shock value into his films, while still making them fun and giving them purpose. Where THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE came close to accomplishing this, its as though Tom Six through the rule book out the window for HC2. Finding any way to empathize with Martin is an exercise in futility. His character serves more as a slasher character than anything, wielding a crowbar to repeatedly take out his victims, but only to render them unconscious, whereas Dr. Heiter used anesthesia to subdue his victims.

The general story of HC2 is as follows: Martin is haunted by his father’s voice, who psychologically and sexually abused him as a child. He lives with his verbally abusive, mentally disconnected mother who forces him to have sessions with an older, bearded shrink who actually wants to molest Martin himself. Martin watches THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE repeatedly and pieces together a scrapbook of the film. Martin is obsessed with recreating Dr. Heiter’s work, but longs to take the project to its full sequence of twelve human beings. The primary catch is, Martin is not a surgeon and has no clue what he’s doing. He gradually builds his inventory of human specimens, stashing them in an old, filthy warehouse space. This activity occupies a good chunk of the middle of the film, which gets to be a bit tedious a bit quick.

THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE 2 (Full Sequence) is at least inclusive and mindful of diversity, as Martin’s collection of human “segments” span a wide array of characters, including a pregnant woman and the female star of THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE Ashlynn Yennie, who plays herself. Randomly selecting most of his victims from the garage in which he works, Martin employs his crowbar and occasionally a handgun. His tools include duct tape and a plethora of knives and other kitchen utensils… oh yeah, and the all-important staple gun. I need not describe this image further. I am sure you can put the pieces together.

By the time Martin gets around to constructing his “centipede” the film has not lived up to it’s hype as being unbearably brutal. Tom Six clearly attempts to change that in the later half of the film, doing exactly what everyone would expect, going to extremes with the gore (although subdued in black and white and not nearly as graphic as it could have been) but, more significantly, exceeds expectations int he realm of shocking acts portrayed on film. HC2 was banned in the UK for scenes of forced ingestion of diarrhea, spontaneous child birth in a car followed by the baby’s head being crushed by its frantic mother, and even a scene in which Martin rapes one of his victims with barbed wire wrapped around his unit… no, believe it or not, none of this compels me to go out and protest. However, all of this serves absolutely no purpose when you factor in the complete lack of any actual story. All of this occurs on screen simply for its own, sensational satisfaction.

THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE 2 (Full Sequence) has nothing to spoil, so before some of you decide to chastise me for giving away some of the more shocking bits, let me just say this… those who planned to see the film will still go see it, while those who had not, will not. It’s as simple as that. On the contrary, I will not reveal the ending, as I felt the final scene was a completely pointless, slightly confusing choice. Consider this my public service message. I will never outright tell anyone not to see a movie, but the closest I have come is with HC2.

Fantastic Fest: Teaser for HUMAN CENTIPEDE 2 (Full Sequence)

For those of you who haven’t yet seen Tom Six’s HUMAN CENTIPEDE (First Sequence), you may label yourselves either far behind the genre times, or lucky to have avoided the controversial film… all depending on the strength of your stomach and fortitude of your mental stability. With that said, Tom Six now ups his own bar with HUMAN CENTIPEDE 2 (Full Sequence) which has apparently already been banned in the UK. Ah, now I’ve got your interest. If so, watch the teaser simply as a spirit booster, but it certainly doesn’t do justice to what will surely prove to be one of the most controversial films since CALUGULA and SALO. HUMAN CENTIPEDE 2 (Full Sequence) will play Fantastic Fest 2011.

Synopsis: Martin is a mentally disturbed loner who lives with his mother in a bleak housing project. He works the night shift as a security guard in an equally grim and foreboding underground parking complex. To escape his dreary existence, Martin loses himself in the fantasy world of the cult horror film The Human Centipede: First Sequence, fetishizing the meticulous surgical skills of the gifted Dr. Heiter, whose knowledge of the human gastrointestinal system inspires Martin to attempt the unthinkable.
