Watch Tom Cruise In THE MUMMY Featurette – THE MUMMY Day Launches May 20th

Collapsing buildings, flipping cars, Sofia Boutella throwing Tom Cruise across a forest…watch THE MUMMY cast show off their insane stunt skills.

Tom Cruise headlines a spectacular, all-new cinematic version of the legend that has fascinated cultures all over the world since the dawn of civilization: The Mummy.

Universal Pictures announced today that The Mummy Day, inspired by the upcoming action-adventure, will launch at 12 P.M. PDT on Saturday, May 20.

Audiences of all ages are invited to visit the enormous 75-foot, 7-ton sarcophagus, which will be revealed at the Hollywood & Highland gateway in Los Angeles. As well, The Mummy star Tom Cruise will be joined on stage by his fellow co-stars and director Alex Kurtzman to invite participants to enjoy The Mummy VR Zero Gravity Stunt Experience and The Mummy Escape Game at the complex. The announcement was made today by Nick Carpou, President of Distribution, Universal.

THE MUMMY arrives in theaters, RealD 3D and IMAX 3D on June 9.

The largest single vertical structure ever assembled at the gateway, The Mummy sarcophagus measures 75 feet in height, 28 feet in width and weighs an astonishing 15,000 pounds. This extraordinary feat of engineering took two firms a total of eight weeks to construct, and scores of workers more than 160 hours to install. To prepare Princess Ahmanet’s sarcophagus for its revealing on The Mummy Day, the tomb required 18 wide-load tractor trailers to move all of the elements into place.

“The Mummy Day marks Universal and RealD’s way of inviting our guests to celebrate the massive and unexpected world of our film before it is released in theaters across the globe in a few weeks,” said Carpou. “Ahmanet’s tale marks a thrilling twist on a timeless legend, and I can’t wait to welcome all our fans—alongside Tom, Annabelle, Sofia, Jake and Alex—as this fearless warrior unleashes her power on today’s audiences.”

“The Mummy has been such a labor of love for the hundreds of cast and crew who have worked for the past few years preparing its big-screen launch,” said Kurtzman. “When we built Princess Ahmanet’s sarcophagus for production, we had no idea that a 15,000-pound replica of her ‘eternal’ resting place would one day find its home at the intersection of Hollywood & Highland. I can’t wait to celebrate her story with the fans on May 20.”

“The Mummy is cinematically spectacular with extraordinary action and visuals that are even more stunning and memorable in 3D,” said Travis Reid, President of Worldwide Cinema and Chief Operating Officer of RealD. “Erecting a 75-foot tall, 7-ton sarcophagus at one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations is the perfect way to launch this epic event. The 3D in The Mummy is mind-blowing, and we can’t wait for audiences to experience it on one of our more than 29,000 RealD-equipped screens worldwide.”

The Mummy Zero Gravity Stunt VR Experience goes behind the scenes with Cruise and Wallis as they perform the intense Zero G stunt as seen in The Mummy. This immersive VR experience is enhanced by Positron’s Voyager platform, featuring custom engineering and software, guided 360-degree motion control, head-tracked 3D audio and haptic integration—allowing guests to experience the world of The Mummy in a way they could only imagine.

In The Mummy Escape Game, an immersive live-action fan experience that also makes its world premiere at The Mummy Day, guests will be recruited as security guards and enter the sweeping story of The Mummy. They must solve interactive puzzles to save mankind from the revenge of an ancient princess who has awakened in current day. Ahmanet’s thirst for justice has spanned centuries, and players must outwit the fearless warrior to survive. Turning the storyline into reality by traveling through multiple rooms, up to 10 players work together within a 60-minute time limit to solve the puzzle and defeat the game.

Fans can tune-in and watch the revealing live on The Mummy official Facebook page and Fandango’s Facebook page.

JACK REACHER: NEVER GO BACK – Review

Tom Cruise brings back his military action character Jack Reacher in JACK REACHER: NEVER GO BACK. With Edward Zwick directing, Cruise delivers his signature brand of action with little touches of humor and romance, in this second movie in what appears to be a franchise based on Lee Child’s action thriller books. Cruise’s return as Reacher should please his loyal fans, although other moviegoers will find little that stands out in this standard action film.

One thing that does offer a bit of fun is the movie’s setting, which is in New Orleans during Halloween instead of Mardi Gras and, in earlier scenes, in the little-seen side streets of Washington, D.C. away from the iconic Capitol buildings. It gives a little visual interest and even a touch of realism to a film that is about as realistic as the average Bond movie and where many plot details make little sense. While realism is not its strong point, the film largely avoids the usual views and instead uses unexpected, and authentic looking, locations in these iconic cities. Setting the New Orleans scenes during Halloween rather than Mardi Gras makes the movie more seasonal while still providing costumed revelers and parades as a crowded, colorful backdrop through which do-gooder Reacher can chase the bad guys, which boosts the entertainment value of the action.

Ex-major Jack Reacher (Cruise) may have left his command with the military police but is still working with them as an undercover agent, under the supervision of Major Susan Turner (Cobie Smulders), who holds his old job. Major Turner keeps track of Reacher by phone as he roams the country exposing bad guys. Returning to home base in D.C., Reacher looks forward to finally meet his supervisor face-to-face and taking her out to dinner (this is a Tom Cruise film, after all). Instead, he discovers Turner has been arrested and replaced with new officer. Reacher determines to clear Turner of charges of espionage and responsibility of the deaths of two military investigators under her command operating in Afghanistan. Of course, the best way to do that is to spring her from jail so they can hunt down the real bad guys, who are employing some ruthless private military contractors led by a nameless hit man (Patrick Heusinger), and solve the mystery. Along the way, the pair pick up a teen-aged girl, 15-year-old Samantha (Danika Yarosh), whose mother has claimed is Reacher’s daughter.

I warned you about the realism but that’s not really the point of this film anyway. The point is to have Tom Cruise show off his superhuman action skills battling these villains, with plenty of chases and gun-play, while trading little romantic back-and-forth quips with Smulders and showing his vulnerable side with the clever, streetwise teenager. There is a kind of running joke in which the military types constantly salute or call Reacher “Major,” to which he tartly responds “ex-Major” to no avail.

Oddly, Zwick gets the action off to a slow start, and things don’t really get cooking until the characters reach New Orleans for the big showdown. Cruise plays a sensitive but stoic character with little touches of self-deprecating humor and romance, a character that dampens down Cruise’s usual smiles and charisma. Smulders nearly steals the show, as does young Yarosh as Sam. Smulders does a nice job as Major Turner, a woman who is both independent and flirty, who delivers some entertaining verbal sparring with Cruise. While the character talks a lot about equality and verbally challenges Reacher’s macho persona, in fact most of the action still features Cruise, which is what his fans are looking for here anyway. Yarosh is sassy and defiant as Sam,and a bit clueless in the manner of teens, and the scenes with her and Cruise are a rather fun.

There is not much that is fresh in this film, and even its best sequence, the showdown in New Orleans, looks a bit too much like a scene from the Bond film SPECTRE. Too many plot holes pop up, inconsistencies abound and the two-dimensional villain doesn’t help.

The movie is based on the 18th book in author Lee Child’s thriller series (and the author gets a cameo in a supporting role) so there are plenty more stories if Cruise wants to turn this into a franchise. The question is how long Cruise can play these kinds of action hero roles and maintain his fan base. Like it or not, Cruise is aging-out of the action hero type, and will have to make some changes to the character if he wants to play Reacher long-term. Those changes need to let the star use more of his natural appeal and express a wider range of human feelings. Right now, the stoic Jack Reacher doesn’t offer that and Cruise needs to find a film franchise that is a good fit for his strengths in the long run.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars

Director Curtis Hanson Dies at Age 71

curtis-hanson

One of the most celebrated film makers of the last four decades has died. Here’s how the New York Times reported it….
Curtis Hanson, the film director whose adaptation of the James Ellroy noir novel “L.A. Confidential” won him an Academy Award, died on Tuesday at his home in Los Angeles. He was 71.

The death was confirmed by Officer Jenny Houser, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Police Department. She said that officers had been called to the house shortly before 5 p.m., and that Mr. Hanson had died of natural causes.

Julie Mann, his business manager, said Mr. Hanson had been struggling for some time with a form of dementia.

Let’s take a look at his long career. His first screen credit is for helping to adapt H.P. Lovecraft’s short story in the 1970 American International Pictures’ THE DUNWICH HORROR starring Sandra Dee and Dean Stockwell. Three years later Hanson was a triple threat as writer, producer, and director of the low-budget Tab Hunter thriller, SWEET KILL. In 1978 he scripted the crime caper flick SILENT PARTNER starring Christopher Plummer, Elliot Gould, Susannah York, and John Candy. Two years later Hanson was back behind the camera as director/producer of the action kids’ comedy DIRTY DRAGONS. He next collaborated with iconic director Sam Fuller on the script for the controversial WHITE DOG in 1982 The next year was a busy one as the screenwriter of the Disney wilderness adventure NEVER CRY WOLF and as director of the 60’s set teen sex farce LOSIN’ IT starring a post RISKY BUSINESS Tom Cruise, Jackie Earl Haley, and Shelley Long.

losinit

In 1987 Hanson wrote and directed the Hitchcock influenced mystery THE BEDROOM WINDOW starring Steve Guttenberg and Isabelle Huppert, and also directed (under the alias Edward Collins) the zombie horror flick EVIL TOWN. 1990 saw him back in thriller territory directing the Rob Lowe/ James Spader BAD INFLUENCE. Two years later Hanson had his biggest commercial hit, directing the psychological nail-biter THE HAND THAT ROCKS THE CRADLE featuring a showdown between mother Annabella Sciorra and Rebecca De Mornay that would inspire countless made-for-basic-cable-TV flicks.

handthatrocksthecradle

In another two years Hanson helped turn Oscar darling Meryl Streep into an action heroine in the outdoor survival action epic THE RIVER WILD.

riverwild

1997 saw the release of Hanson’s most acclaimed film. He pulled triple duty (directing, co-producing, and co-screenwriter) on the movie adaptation of James Ellroy’s noir ode to the “city of angels”, L.A. CONFIDENTIAL. It was gritty 1953-set whodunit involving high-priced star look-a-like call girls, mobsters, gossip rags, and corrupt cops (except for noble Bud White, a role that firmly established Russell Crowe as a major star). And it earned Hanson his only Oscar, for adapting the book with Brain Helgeland (Kim Basinger grabbed one for supporting actress). It might’ve nabbed Best Picture if not for that flick about the boat and the iceberg.

laconfidential

Hanson’s follow-up was quite a change of pace. He directed and co-produced WONDER BOYS based on Michael Chabon’s quirky college-set comic romance and featuring a most impressive cast: Michael Douglas, Robert Downey, Jr., Toby Maguire, Frances McDormand and Katie Holmes. It garnered tons of favorable reviews and tanked at the box office.

wonder-boys

But Hanson bounced back in 2002 as the director/producer of the semi-autobiographical rap drama 8 MILE telling the slightly fictionalized story of its star, hip-hop superstar Eminem and co-starring Basinger as his boozy mother. It snagged an Oscar for Best Original Song and was a smash box office hit.

8mile

That same year Hanson was in front of the camera playing Streep’s husband in ADAPTATION. He returned to directing and producing with the sister sibling “dramedy” IN HER SHOES with Cameron Diaz, Toni Collette, and Shirley MacLaine. Two years later Hanson handled the same chores in addition to co-wrtiting the screenplay on the drama set in the world of professional poker players, LUCKY YOU which starred Eric Bana and Drew Barrymore. His last feature film was the 2014 family friendly true surfing sports saga CHASING MAVERICKS starring Gerard Butler. Unfortunately, due to illness, Hanson was unable to finish directing the film and Michael Apted was brought into to finish it.

Curtis Hanson was also a well-respected film historian and scholar. For a short time he was editor of Cinema magazine. In 1999 Hanson became the first chairman of the UCLA Film and television Archive, and in he was a member of the Directors’ Branch of the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

We hope you’ll take the time to sample some of his films. Mr. Hanson has left an outstanding body of work, a legacy that movie lovers will study and enjoy forever.
