Movie’s Re-Release to Coincide With the Centennial of the Ship’s Sailing

HOLLYWOOD, CA (May 19, 2011) – Paramount Pictures, Twentieth Century Fox and Lightstorm Entertainment jointly announced today that James Cameron’s TITANIC will be re-released worldwide on April 6, 2012.

The release, which marks the 100th anniversary of the Titanic setting sail (April 10th), will present the film in 3D for the first time ever.

Written, directed and produced by Cameron, TITANIC is the second highest grossing movie of all time. It is one of only three films to have received a record 11 Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director; and launched the careers of stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet.

Called “A spectacular demonstration of what modern technology can contribute to dramatic storytelling” by Variety upon its release in 1997, the long in the works 3D conversion is being overseen by Cameron and his Lightstorm producing partner Jon Landau who produced the hit movie.

Said Cameron, “There’s a whole generation that’s never seen TITANIC as it was meant to be seen, on the big screen. And this will be TITANIC  as you’ve never seen it before, digitally re-mastered at 4K and painstakingly converted to 3D. With the emotional power intact and the images more powerful than ever, this will be an epic experience for fans and newcomers alike.”

“This new presentation of Paramount’s top-grossing film is particularly special because 2012 is the 100th anniversary of our studio. Paramount has had the pleasure of introducing audiences to some of the all-time classics of cinema during that century of moviemaking and we cannot think of a better way to mark the occasion than with this re-release of TITANIC,” said Brad Grey, Chairman and CEO of Paramount Pictures.

Commented Fox Filmed Entertainment Chairmen and CEOs, Jim Gianopulos and Tom Rothman: “Our 30-plus year relationship with Jim Cameron and Lightstorm has been enormously rewarding, from ALIENS to AVATAR, and the global phenomenon of TITANIC remains one of the greatest sources of pride in our history. We are pleased to allow a new generation of audiences to experience the film in its brilliant digital restoration in 3D.”

AVATAR Sinks TITANIC at the Box Office!!!

“And that’s all she wrote.”  Reuters  is reporting that 20th Century Fox estimates AVATAR will go past TITANIC as the highest grossing film… $1,848B worldwide… by Monday. Fox also added that in North America, it may take up to 2 weeks before  the World of Pandora  film  sinks the $601 million total of TITANIC. AVATAR’s weekend-domestic gross was $36 million domestically and led the box office for a sixth straight weekend totaling $552.8 million. Staggers the mind! On Saturday, it  surpassed THE DARK KNIGHT for second place in the record books.

A moment of silence for the unsinkable  RMS TITANIC.

‘Titanic’ Getting 3D Redux

titanic

Sometimes, $600 million just isn’t enough money.  According to The Hollywood Reporter, James Cameron’s ‘Titanic’ is less than a year away from seeing 3D re-release.   This bit of news comes from Cameron’s own Lightstorm Entertainment, and, evidently, tests have already been run on the potential of transferring ‘Terminator’ and ‘Terminator 2’ to 3D, as well.

Says Jon Landau of Lightstorm:

We are certainly interested in exploring the opportunity to rerelease some of Lightstorm’s past films in 3D.   I don’t think it’s too far into the future. We’re pretty far down the road.

With films like ‘Toy Story’ and ‘Toy Story 2’ already seeing 3D re-releases in the near future, the trend of 3D filmmaking is looking to retro itself out very soon.   If these early tests prove to be successful, look for many more studios to re-release classics from their film library in 3D.

Says Nikki Rocco of Universal:

I know we’re all watching this to see if there’s something there.   The uniqueness of 3D definitely brings something different to the table. But right now it’s wait and see.

‘Toy Story’ and ‘Toy Story 2’ get their 3D re-releases on October 2nd.   There is no date set for ‘Titanic’s re-release.

‘Dark Knight’ Breaks $1 Billion!

darkknightbestever

Well, it’s not going to break the ‘Titanic’ barrier, but ‘The Dark Knight’ did pull a milestone this week. Â  It became the fourth film in history to make over $1 billion worldwide.

Warner Brothers made the announcement Friday, citing their worldwide take at  $1,001,082,160  to date — about $533 million domestically and $567 million overseas.

‘Knight’ had been about $4  million short of the 10-figure mark when Warner Bros. re-released it into Imax screens on Jan. 23, the day  after its eight Oscar nominations were announced. Grosses from Ecuador also helped nudge the Batpic over the mark, a spokeswoman said.

Only ‘Titanic,’ with $1.8 billion, ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King,’ with $1.1 billion, and ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest’, with $1.06 billion have topped the billion-dollar  worldwide mark previously.

So, what do you think? Â  Did you see ‘The Dark Knight’ again since its re-release? Â  Is it shocking that only four films have ever broken the billion dollar worldwide mark? Â  Isn’t it great that ‘Dead Man’s Chest’, by far the best film in that series, is the one that made so much money? Â  Let us know by commenting below!

‘The Dark Knight’ Gets It’s Re-Release and Oscar Campaign

Warner Bros. has announced that they are officially re-releasing ‘The Dark Knight’ in theaters and IMAX on January 23rd, 2009. Â  We reported a few months back that this was happening, but an official date wasn’t set.

Says Dan Fellman, Warner Bros. Pictures President of Domestic Distribution: “‘The Dark Knight’ is a crowning achievement in every sense of the word. We wanted to provide one more opportunity for moviegoers to experience it on the big screen as it was meant to be seen.”

The film has already broken so many box office records, and it sits at the #2 spot on the alltime domestic box office chart. Â  It’s still about $70 million behind ‘Titanic’. Â  With this re-release, it could, potentially, break that record, too, and it will undoubtedly top $1 billion worldwide.

Also, over at Dark Campaign, a grassroots effort to get ‘The Dark Knight’ a Best Picture nomination at the Academy Awards. Â  They’ve put together a little video that you can check out here:

What do you think? Â  Does ‘The Dark Knight’ have a shot in hell of toppling ‘Titanic’ or getting a Best Picture nomination? Â  If you had to pick between those two, which would you rather see? Â  Let us know by commenting below!

This is How ‘Dark Knight’ Will Break ‘Titanic’s’ Record

Ever since it’s outstanding opening, people have been wondering if ‘The Dark Knight’ would have the kind of legs that could dethrone ‘Titanic’ as the all-time, domestic box office champion.   ‘Titanic’ managed to rake in just over $600 million.   ‘The Dark Knight’, as of September 11, is at $513 million.   Many have thought that there was only one way ‘The Dark Knight’ could top ‘Titanic’.   Today, Warner Brothers decided to take that one way.

The Hollywood Reporter is saying that WB has decided to rerelease ‘The Dark Knight’ in theaters come January.   This would give the film considerable Oscar buzz, as that’s the height of the Oscar debate period.

“It’s just a matter of bringing it back as a reminder for people,” a studio insider said.

The domestic distribution president at Warner, Dan Fellman, has confirmed that there are ongoing talks between Warner and executives at IMAX to rerelease the film on the large-screen format.   There is no word yet on whether or not it will also be rereleased in more conventional theaters

‘The Dark Knight’ is also set to hit DVD shelves in December.   Whether or not that will have an effect on the rerelease’s box office take remains to be seen.
