TOOTH FAIRY Trailer is Painful

Nothing like a hurts donut just before the weekend starts.   To that end, excuse me if I’m being a little lazy, but I’m going to reiterate the same discussion I ran with the poster for this Rock-starring, kiddy-friendly snoozefest.   This comes just as the trailer for ‘The Tooth Fairy’ is hitting the Inter-waves via Yahoo! Movies.

Is it the skates?  Is it the wings?  Is it the horrid tagline?  What about this new poster trailer for ‘The Tooth Fairy’ is it that just makes us cringe so much?  If you picked any of those three, you’d be wrong?  It’s the fact that we remember a day about six years ago when ‘The Rundown’ came out, and a scene early in the film had a passing of the baton of sorts between Arnold Schwarzenegger and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.  Knowing the ‘Jingle All the Way’ and ‘Junior’ path Schwarzenegger took later in his career, we were worried then, and it seems our worries have come to fruition.

See that cute, little PG tag in the bottom left-hand corner of the poster at the start of the clip?  That means the baton has truly been passed.  Johnson could have been a second coming for a lot of action fans, but he has jump-started the rear trajectory on a career that could have made him an icon.  It’s been happening for a long time, and some of always had hope that Johnson would snap back, take back the action reigns, and rule alongside guys like Jet Li and Jason Statham.  Alas, that is not to be, and we are sure to see more rather than less of those goofy scowls and muscled up & folded arms.

Now feast your optics on this bit of cardboard:

I…it…when he jumps off…with the wings…

Words fail me.

‘The Tooth Fairy’ comes out on January 22nd.

Here’s a banner, too, in case your cringe-meter hadn’t jumped the scale this morning.  This and the poster both come our way thanks to IMP Awards.

Dwayne Johnson Says ‘Holy Cow!’

rock

Dwayne Johnson will be voicing his first, CG-animated feature. Â  The film is called ‘Holy Cow!’ and it has White Buffalo Media and Prana Animation Studios teaming up for it.

The story, based on an original idea by Peter Kalmbach and Teddy Grennan, will have Johnson voicing a macho, Texas bull who decides  to seek refuge in India, where cattle are revered, not eaten.   White Buffalo and Prana are seeking screenwriters and a director to finish the project.

While I think the idea is funny, and it will probably make for a good, animated comedy, I miss the days when Johnson was the “next big action star.” Â  I understand the guy has to expand himself, but doing all these children’s movies is getting old in a hurry. Â  He next has ‘Race to Witch Mountain’, which doesn’t look all that promising, and, after that, he has ‘The Tooth Fairy’, which is basically ‘The Santa Clause’ with a pink tutu and a wand.

What do you think? Â  Should Dwayne Johnson go back to doing action films? Â  Should he go way back and start wrestling again? Â  Let us know by commenting below!

‘2012’ Gets Pushed Back to November

‘2012’, the new end-of-the-world blockbuster helmed by Roland Emmerich was scheduled to hit on July 10th. Â  It looks like Sony has decided to push the film back all the way to November 13th, two weeks before Thanksgiving.

“We’ve had such success with the James Bond films in November that we wanted a big tent-pole film in that slot this year,” Sony distribution president Rory Bruer said Tuesday. “We’ve got so many films in the summer that this is the perfect answer to that.”

The studio’s remaining films set for release this summer include ‘The Taking of Pelham 123’ starring Denzel Washington and John Travolta, ‘The Year One’ starring Jack Black and Michael Cera, ‘Julie and Julia’ starring Meryl Streep and Amy Adams, ‘District 9’, and ‘Mardi Gras’.

‘2012’, originally scheduled to open against the Christopher Columbus comedy, ‘I Love You, Beth Cooper’. Â  It will now contend with Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law in ‘Sherlock Holmes’ and Dwayne Johnson in ‘The Tooth Fairy’.

Sony execs said ‘2012’ could have been completed by its summer date, though the new date will add some extra time for the effects-laden production.

What do you think? Â  Is this a good move for Sony? Â  Is it really important for them to have a big, November release? Â  How well do you think ‘2012’ will do against ‘Sherlock Holmes’ and ‘The Tooth Fairy’? Â  Let us know by commenting below!
