“This year the NBR honored The Social Network, as well as its director David Fincher, lead actor Jesse Eisenberg and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin. We believe the film portrays a dramatic story that will stand up over time and appeal to many generations,” said NBR President Annie Schulhof. “The NBR screened over 250 films this year, from big studios to small independents, and I think our winners reflect the diversity and goal of the organization, which is to honor excellence in filmmaking. We look forward to celebrating with all our talented honorees on the evening of January 11th and are very pleased to welcome back last year’s host Meredith Vieira.”

This year the National Board of Review, a select group of film enthusiasts, academics, film professionals, and students, screened over 250 films including studio, independent, foreign-language, animated and documentary selections. These screenings were frequently followed by in-depth discussions with filmmakers, directors, actors, producers, and screenwriters. The NBR was founded as a clearing house for new movies, over a hundred years ago on January 25, 1909, just 13 years after the birth of cinema. Its stated purpose was to endorse films of merit and champion the new “art of the people,” which was transforming America’s cultural life.  Today, the organization is comprised of 110 members, many of whom are past recipients of the NBR student grant program which enables students and young filmmakers to finish their projects and exhibit their work.

Each January, the NBR hosts talented and prestigious members of the film community at its awards gala, honoring achievements in a variety of categories of film, direction, and performance. In addition, the NBR recognizes new voices in filmmaking with its Directorial Debut andBreakthrough Acting Awards and singles out a deserving individual in the film community with The William K. Everson Film History Award, in honor of the pioneering film historian, educator, author, and longtime NBR member.

For over 101 years the National Board of Review has dedicated its efforts to the support of film, domestic and foreign, as both art and entertainment. The nonprofit organization celebrates the distinctive voice of the individual artist, honoring excellence and supporting freedom of expression in film. The Board’s core activities include fostering commentary on all aspects of film production, as well as underwriting educational film programs and seminars for film students. In 2010, the NBR gave student grants to nine schools, and reached out to the community through the Children’s Aid Society, Reel Works Teen Filmmaking, The Ghetto Film School, and Educational Video Center.  In addition, the organization annually grants the Marion Carter Green award to a student   short film with strong musical elements.  For more information please visit http://www.nbrmp.org/.

HISTORY

The National Board of Review (NBR) was founded in 1909 in New York City, just thirteen years after the birth of cinema. It was formed to protest New York City Mayor George McClennan’s revocation of moving-picture exhibition licenses, which occurred on Christmas Eve of 1908 on the grounds that the new medium supposedly degraded the morals of the community.  To assert their constitutional freedom of expression, theater owners, led by Marcus Loew, and film distributors (Edison Biograph, Pathe, and Gaumont), joined John Collier of The People’s Institute at Cooper Union to establish a National Review Committee, a clearing house, that endorsed films of merit and encouraged the new “art of the people.” In 1919 the organization first selected its “10 best movies of the year.” The NBR later published a magazine called Films in Review, which was the first publication devoted to critical discussion of film, counting among its contributors Harold Robbins, Dore Schary, Stephen Sondheim, Alfred Hitchcock, and Tennessee Williams. During the era of the Hollywood blacklist (when others were silent), Films in Review vigorously opposed film censorship. Movies released between 1920 and 1951 carried the legend “Passed by the National Board of Review.”

To tide you over, here are seven new videos from the film.

From Yahoo! Movies

From director David Fincher (ZODIAC, THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON) and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin comes THE SOCIAL NETWORK, a film that proves you don’t get to 500 million friends without making a few enemies. The film is produced by Scott Rudin, Dana Brunetti, Michael De Luca, and Cean Chaffin and based on the book “The Accidental Billionaires” by Ben Mezrich.

Starring Jesse Eisenberg, Brenda Song, Justin Timberlake, Andrew Garfield, Rooney Mara and Armie Hammer, and from Sony Pictures Entertainment, THE SOCIAL NETWORK will be in theaters this Friday, October 1, 2010.

ET’s Preview Of THE SOCIAL NETWORK

On Tuesday, Entertainment Tonight showed this preview of THE SOCIAL NETWORK.

Some the excerpts:

In ‘The Social Network,’ the film inspired by the true story of the creation of Facebook, ‘Zombieland’ star Jesse Eisenberg plays Mark Zuckerberg, the genius Harvard student with a vision that ultimately became the website with approximately 500 million members.

“People want to go on the Internet and check out their friends, so why not build a website that offers that?” says Jesse as Zuckerberg in the movie.

Justin Timberlake plays the wild card, Sean Parker. The entrepreneur that founded Napster was highly influential in the success of Facebook and became its president in 2004 when the company incorporated.

“I don’t feel a responsibility to mimic anyone who’s living,” says Justin about playing a real-life person. “I feel a responsibility to create a character that’s interesting for the film, and I feel that’s what we’re all doing.”

“Justin, when I heard that he was going to play that part, I thought it was such a great choice, and selfishly so, because my character sees him as like a rock star,” says Jesse.

Andrew Garfield, recently tapped to play the new ‘Spider-Man’ and also seen this fall opposite Keira Knightley in ‘Never Let Me Go,’ plays Zuckerberg’s best friend, Eduardo Saverin, who was with Facebook from the very beginning, and reportedly later sued the company for a massive sum, eventually settling the case.

“My relationship with [Jesse] is my linchpin, that’s all I kind of have to anchor me to the circumstances, and if he didn’t feel like a brother to me, then it wouldn’t work,” says Andrew.

It seems pretty clear that the film will be amongst the 10 in the Best Picture race. In his weekly Oscar projections, Scott Feinberg has placed Timberlake in the Best Supporting Actor nominee category and rightly so I may add. The guy can act. Definitely watch him in the films BLACK SNAKE MOAN and ALPHA DOG or even his stints on Saturday Night Live. Plus, it’s ironically reminiscent of another popular singer’s, Frank Sinatra, win for FROM HERE TO ETERNITY.

Starring Jesse Eisenberg, Brenda Song, Justin Timberlake, Andrew Garfield, Rooney Mara and Armie Hammer, THE SOCIAL NETWORK is the Opening Night film for the upcoming 48th Annual New York Film Festival on September 24th. New THE SOCIAL NETWORK Trailer Makes More Friends

One can’t help but be truly moved by the beginning of this new trailer for THE SOCIAL NETWORK. The whole look of it is really mesmerizing and I was ready to finally see some footage from the film after after the two dialogue driven teasers. I love that Radiohead’s “Creep” – ala a children’s choir – accompanies it.

Where’s the “like” button to click on?? The score for the film is from Nine Inch Nails. In early July, Trent Reznor posted on their website:

…I’m happy to tell you we’re nearing the completion of this and I couldn’t be happier with how it’s turned out. The level of excellence that David (Fincher) operates on is inspiring and the entire process has been challenging and truly enjoyable.

The festival runs from September 24th through October 10th, 2010. Richard Pena, Selection Committee Chair & Program Director from The Film Society of Lincoln Center said,

“It’s exceptionally rare to discover a film that so powerfully captures the spirit of its time; The Social Network is such a film. David Fincher and Aaron Sorkin are a director/writer team, like Lumet and Chayefsky before them, that make this movie not only of the moment, but reflective of larger cultural issues as well, and confirm their position at forefront of contemporary cinema.”

Fincher SACRIFICEs PAWN for DRAGON TATTOO

And then two projects became one.  We let you know a few weeks ago that director David Fincher was circling two, different projects, the Bobby Fischer biopic, PAWN SACRIFICE, and the US remake of THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO.  Evidently, Fincher likes girls with tattoos more than he likes chess, because the latter project won out.  According to the Playlist, DRAGON TATTOO has been confirmed as Fincher’s next film.

Rumors of Carey Mulligan being groomed for the lead role are just that, rumors.  Fincher evidently wants an unknown for the role, and Sony, who is behind DRAGON TATTOO and Fincher’s next release, THE SOCIAL NETWORK, couldn’t be happier with Fincher right now.  THE SOCIAL NETWORK, by the way, is set to release in October.  Fincher plans to begin shooting DRAGON TATTOO around this same time.

While it still irks me somewhat to see a US remake of THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO already in the works, I have faith Fincher won’t just make a retread of a film we’ve already seen.  If he’s come on board, that means he has an angle he has found with the original story that will make it his own.  It will be interesting to see how the two films, the original, Swedish film and Fincher’s, will compare.
