Fantasy Cast… Who should play ‘The Goon’ in a Live-Action Movie?

Hey, don’t go getting your panties all in a twist! There aren’t any plans (that I know of) for a live-action movie in the works, but with the animated adaptation of Eric Powell’s awesome comic book series being pieced together, I figured a purely speculative discussion of a live-action version needed to be addressed… you know, just fer tha’ Helluvit!

So, even though the animated film is still essentially in the “script” phase, according to IMDBPro, what is known is that David Fincher is producing the project. How cool is that? We could talk about who should direct ‘The Goon’ but it’s too early for that and honestly, not as much fun as speculating on who would best fit the roles of Franky and The Goon in a live-action movie.

I will gladly be the first to admit that ‘The Goon’ will not be a story easily translated into a live-action film. The two main characters alone, The Goon and Franky, would have to be handled very carefully. The stylistic element works extremely well in the books, but to try and convey it “exactly” in the movie may prove to be a dicey proposition.

It can be done, however, if you recall Warren Beatty’s ‘Dick Tracy’ (1990) and how well they handled the movie’s villains, especially for the time. Although, one of the great elements of ‘The Goon’ is all the cool characters and creatures… i.e. the Zombie Priest, the slack jaws, The Mudds, Buzzard, Dr. Hieronymous Alloy and all the big nasty monsters The Goon encounters.

The Goon Franky

But, I digress. The focus of this discussion is centered on The Goon and his side-kick (don’t call him that to his face) Franky. These are visually two very different characters. Both of whom carry a tough, hard as nails exterior but The Goon has an inner essence that would require some acting talent. So, who should we place on the casting block?

Possible choices for The Goon:

Possible choices for Franky:

Mickey Rourke Joe Pantoliano
Bruce Willis Steve Buscemi

What do you think? Who should play The Goon and Franky in a live-action version of the popular comic book series? If you have any ideas for which actors best fit the roles, be sure to let us know.

First Image from ‘The Goon’ Feature Surfaces!

OMG, I am SOOO excited about this project! (So excited that I decided to use IM Talk) After being out of the comic book scene for a while, I recently decided to re-enter the hobby on a limited basis. Believe it or not, writing for WeAreMovieGeeks is kind of time-consuming.

Anyway, I decided to find just 2-3 “newer” titles I like and simply follow those. Well, the very first one I discovered was ‘The Goon’ and goodness gracious is it a wonderful thing… assuming you’re into zombies, thugs, nasty creatures and comic book violence.

So, needless to say… I was ecstatic when I first discovered a feature adaptation was being developed. Then, learned it would be animated… good call! Then, it’s being produced by David Fincher! Holy sh**! When the poster was revealed at Comic Con, I feel further into the geek abyss of fandom. Now, the very first image from the movie has surfaced and I am such a happy movie geek!

Oh, and in case you missed it… here’s the poster again:

‘The Goon’ poster …

We already had a crappy version of ‘The Goon’ poster, so here is the real one, not just a picture of one. Thanks to our good friends at MoviesOnline. I am super excited for this movie to come out as the comics kick some major ass.

Here is a brief rundown of what ‘The Goon’ is all about:

“The story is about the adventures of the Goon, a muscle-bound brawler who claims to be the primary enforcer for the feared mobster Labrazio. The Goon (and his sidekick Franky) often get tied up in other machinations, often in relation to the evil zombie gangs under the command of the Nameless Zombie Priest.

The series has a distinctly paranormal slant, with the average story concerning ghosts, ghouls, skunk-apes with an unnatural hunger for pie, extra-dimensional aliens, and mad scientists.”

Eric Powell is a mad genius.
