‘Dark Knight’ Breaks $1 Billion!

Well, it’s not going to break the ‘Titanic’ barrier, but ‘The Dark Knight’ did pull a milestone this week. Â  It became the fourth film in history to make over $1 billion worldwide.

Warner Brothers made the announcement Friday, citing their worldwide take at  $1,001,082,160  to date — about $533 million domestically and $567 million overseas.

‘Knight’ had been about $4  million short of the 10-figure mark when Warner Bros. re-released it into Imax screens on Jan. 23, the day  after its eight Oscar nominations were announced. Grosses from Ecuador also helped nudge the Batpic over the mark, a spokeswoman said.

Only ‘Titanic,’ with $1.8 billion, ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King,’ with $1.1 billion, and ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest’, with $1.06 billion have topped the billion-dollar  worldwide mark previously.

Self-Written ‘Inception’ up next for Christopher Nolan

Christopher Nolan, the filmmaker who has singe-handedly become Warner’s cash cow, has determined what project he will take on next after the mega-successful ‘Dark Knight’. Nolan will direct an original screenplay of his own writing called ‘Inception’.

“Inception” is described as “a contemporary sci-fi actioner set within the architecture of the mind.” — HR

He will team with Emma Thomas to produce, with whom he worked on the billion-dollar grossing ‘Dark Knight’ and hopes to begin production this summer. The plan is to have a summer 2010 release date.

‘Batman’ Producer Hints at Next Film’s Release Date

Michael Uslan, the executive producer on ‘Batman Begins’ and ‘The Dark Knight’ spoke recently with New Jersey’s Courier-Post. Â  He says the next Christopher Nolan-directed ‘Batman’ installment is due in 2011.

Uslan will be onboard as executive producer for the ‘Dark Knight’sequel, which he estimates will be theaters by 2011. As for the identity of the next round of Batman’s supervillains and love interests, Uslan remains tight-lipped. “It’s one of those deals where if I told you, I’d have to kill you,” he says with a chuckle.

Of course, any news regarding the new ‘Batman’ film will assuredly be taken with a grain of salt. Â  This could just be the guy trying to stir up buzz. Â  Of course, if you know us geeks at all, you know we love our buzz.

Is Aaron Eckhart Changing His Story About Two-Face’s Demise?

Back when rumors were flying about Two-Face and his possible reappearance in the third ‘Batman’ film, actor Aaron Eckhart made no bones about how the character ended up.

“He is dead as a door nail,† Eckhart told Coming Soon not too long ago.   “I asked Chris [Nolan] that question and he goes, “You’re dead” before I could even get the question out of my mouth. “Hey Chris, am I?” “You’re dead!” Alright, cool.”

Well, it appears certain script elements about the third film may have been dropped last night at the Golden Globes.

Seems like Eckhart isn’t all that firm about Harvey’s demise any more, does it?

Who Deserves to be a Potato Head?

The Julienne (from The Dark Spud, sequel to Spudman Begins)

Alright Movie Geeks and Potato Head fans… here’s the newest Potato Head movie character creation. This one was bound to happen sooner or later, but thanks to our awesome reader Jason Stack, who requested we do The Joker from ‘The Dark Knight’, I decided to make him my next creation. This one actually also marks a shift in my technique. Whereas the other Potato Heads I’ve created using Play-Doh, this one I used modeling clay. Wow! It worked much better, easier to use, less frustrating and opens the door to far more detailed possibilities. The one drag is that it leaves a funky residue on your fingers that isn’t easily removed… but, it’s worth it to bring these little dudes (and soon to include dudettes) into creation. Feel free the leave comments and feedback, and definitely send more suggestions my way. I have lots of ideas but have trouble choosing. So, if you make a request I don’t have to choose!

Horn clears up ‘Dark Knight’ rumors

It’s been on everybodys mind since it came to theaters. Is there going to be another Batman movie? Well President of Warner Bros. Alan Horn spoke up to clear all those rumors that have been circling around the entertainment world. He stated that really the only thing he is sure of is that the studio is still in talks with Nolan to do another one. I  can personally live with that because I think another Batman movie right now will be to quick.   Horn gave another statement saying, “We’ve been talking to Chris Nolan and what we have to do is get him in the right place and have him tell us what he thinks the notion might be for a great story, but Chris did a great job and we’d love to have him come back and do another one.† To see the full interview with Alan Horn go to Collider and get in the loop.

‘Dark Knight’ Quickly Becomes Blu-ray Champion

Are you really that shocked?   ‘The Dark Knight’ sold a  record 600,000 copies on Blu-ray  on its first day of release on Dec. 9.   This made up about 21% of its total units sold, according to Warner Home Video.   The studio believes U.S. Blu-ray sales could hit 1 million high-def copies in week one—a format milestone—according to WHV president Ron Sanders.

“We think we will hit 1 million this weekend,† said Sanders. “What’s really encouraging about it is that the Blu-ray version did exceptionally well across the board. It wasn’t just selling in Best Buy or Wal-Mart, but also it did well in grocery and game stores. It was surprising to us just how well it did.†

‘The Dark Knight’ shattered the previous single-day Blu-ray sales of ‘Iron Man’, which  moved 260,000 high-def copies on its first day on sale Sept. 30, and 500,000 units in its first week.

‘The Dark Knight’ sold  about 3 million copies in both standard and high-def in the U.S. on its first day of release, according to Warner.   This doubles  the sales that Warner was projecting. Also, its overall standard and Blu-ray sales are 15% ahead of what Warner had predicted for day one.

The studio is especially pleased with ‘The Dark Knight’s  Blu-ray sales considering the relatively small hardware base for the format. Sanders believes there will soon be nearly a 100% attachment rate between the little more than 2 million Blu-ray set-top owners and ‘The Dark Knight’ copies.

“The last time a title had the ability to get to 100% was The Matrix,† said Sanders of when Warner’s  title was first released on DVD in 1999. “In that case, there were markets that sold as many units as there were [DVD] players installed at the time.†

Even though ‘The Dark Knight’Â  blew apart Warner’s initial estimates, the studio is not re-adjusting its year-end home entertainment assessments because of it. Sanders continues to believe that consumer spending might be down as much as 5% to 6% from 2007. He also is sticking to 2008 Blu-ray revenue reaching $650 million to $800 million, which represents lowered forecasting due to the soft economy.

However, Warner Bros. does believe ‘The Dark Knight’Â  is a good sign that the home entertainment category is behaving fairly well, considering having to operate in the worst economic environment in recent memory.

“The big titles continue to do well,† said Sanders. “The recession does not kill a category. There is more of a flight to quality, where the big titles perform well and the lesser titles perform worse—but the business does not shut down.†
