MTV Gets In On The Oscars

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and mtvU, MTV’s 24-hour college network, today announced that Terry Stackhouse and Zach Cusson from Emerson College are the Grand Prize winners for the “Oscar Correspondent Contest.” As part of their prize, they will receive a spot on the red carpet for the 82nd Academy Awards® arrivals on Sunday, March 7, and will have access to the backstage press rooms and the Governors Ball. Oscar coverage from the winning team will be posted on mtvU.com and MTVNews.com the week of March 8.

AMPAS President Tom Sherak was present on Saturday morning to announce the winners right outside the Kodak Theatre. He joked with Stackhouse and Cusson that they had 45 seconds to deliver their acceptance speeches or the music would play them off.

The winning team was selected through a second mtvU online poll and evaluation by a panel composed of Academy staff and professional entertainment journalists. The journalists were Jess Cagle from Entertainment Weekly, Sandy Cohen from the Associated Press and Bonnie Tiegel from “Entertainment Tonight” and “The Insider.”

The runners-up will receive admission to the 2010 Bleacher Fan Oscar Viewing Party, sponsored by Kodak, at the historic El Capitan Theatre. Kodak provided each of the finalists with a Kodak Zi8 pocket video camera and a Kodak EasyShare M381 digital camera.

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2009 will be presented on Sunday, March 7, 2010, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live by the ABC Television Network beginning at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET. No Oscar Show For THE HURT LOCKER Producer Chartier, Says Academy

(Nicolas Chartier and Greg Shapiro at the 21st Annual PGA Awards)

Mere hours before voting closed to Academy members at 5 PM PT on Tuesday, March 2, came this announcement from AMPAS. As Newt said in ALIENS, “It won’t make any difference.”

Beverly Hills, CA (March 2, 2010) The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today that, should “The Hurt Locker” be announced as the recipient of the Best Picture award at Sunday’s ceremonies, only three of the picture’s producers will be present for the celebration. The fourth of the film’s credited producers, Nicolas Chartier, has been denied attendance at the 82nd Academy Awards® as a penalty for violating Academy campaigning standards.

Chartier had recently disseminated an email to certain Academy voters and other film industry figures in which he solicited votes for his own picture and disparaged one of the other contending films. Academy rules prohibit “casting a negative or derogatory light on a competing film.” The executive committee of the Academy’s Producers Branch, at a special session late Monday, ruled that the ethical lapse merited the revocation of Chartier’s invitation to the Awards.

The group stopped short of recommending that the Academy Governors rescind Chartier’s nomination. If  “The Hurt Locker” were to be selected as Best Picture, Chartier would receive his Oscar® statuette at some point subsequent to the March 7 ceremonies.

It will be Osborne’s fifth stint on the red carpet for the Academy

Being on Oscar’s red carpet is unlike any other experience, said Academy President Tom Sherak. Robert is the perfect person to welcome our guests and ease them into a night of spectacular celebration.

Secondly:

Gerard Butler, Bradley Cooper, Tom Ford, Jake Gyllenhaal, Chris Pine, Keanu Reeves, Ryan Reynolds and Sam Worthington will present on the 82nd Academy Awards telecast, producers Bill Mechanic and Adam Shankman announced today. Butler, Cooper, Ford, Pine, Reynolds and Worthington will each be making their debut appearance on the Oscar show. This will be Gyllenhaal’s third appearance and Reeves’s fifth.

On a sidenote, Gregory Ellwood over at HitFix is reporting on the producers makeover of‚ “when five previous Oscar winners welcomed in the new winner into their category. It was definitely a class move last year.” Mechanic and Shankman had announced earlier that there would be a personal ” friends” connection between the presenter and winner. Ellwood has the list of said presenters. SPOILERS AHEAD!

Oscar Presenters On The 82nd Academy Awards Show

The clock is running, so its par for the course that a flurry of Oscar news comes straight from the horse’s mouth.

Oscar producers Adam Shankman and Bill Mechanic announced on Monday that past Oscar winners Kathy Bates, Barbra Streisand and Charlize Theron will join former Oscar nominees Robert Downey Jr., Samuel L. Jackson, Queen Latifah and John Travolta as presenters at the 82nd Academy Awards. Collectively the group has earned 16 nominations and won four Academy Awards.

So Babs will present the first woman, Kathryn Bigelow, the Oscar for Best Director, right?  I suppose there’s a certain symmetry here if Bigelow wins and Streisand, who directed Best Picture nominee THE PRINCE OF TIDES, without the benefit of a nomination herself, is on hand. Last week it was announced that Tyler Perry, Sacha Baron Cohen, Jason Bateman, Steve Carell, Tina Fey and Ben Stiller would be presenters as well.

Additionally,

Managing editor of Entertainment Weekly Jeff Cagle, co-host of ABC’s “The View” Sherri Shepherd, and model-turned-mogul Kathy Ireland will serve as hosts for the 82nd Academy Awards pre-show “Oscars Red Carpet… 2010”  and will air on the ABC Television Network at 5 p.m. PT, immediately preceding the Oscar telecast. This will be Ireland’s and Shepherd’s first time hosting the Oscar® pre-show and Cagle’s second consecutive year as a host.

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2009 will be presented on Sunday, March 7, 2010, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live by the ABC Television Network beginning at 5 p.m. PT/ 8 p.m. ET. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 200 countries worldwide.
