HEARTS BEAT LOUD – Review

Hans Christian Andersen said, “Where words fail, music speaks.” This is most certainly the case with HEARTS BEAT LOUD – a quiet well-meaning slice-of-life that only feels alive when the music is playing. It’s the unfortunate kind of indie drama that fails to reach out through the screen despite showcasing two likable actors playing to their strengths. Offermann the curmudgeonly philosopher who talks about feelings without showing them, and Clemons the timid outsider trying to find her path.

Widowed dad and record store owner Frank (Nick Offerman) is preparing to close his record shop just as his only daughter, Sam (Kiersey Clemons), is about to go off to college. Their love of music triggers a jam session one night, and the result is a catchy tune that Frank dumps online under the band name “We’re Not a Band.” After the song becomes an Internet breakout, the two must decide what they want to do next in their lives and if they should keep the music going.

Director and writer Brett Haley purposefully centers the film on these small moments – the glances between a father and daughter and those times of contemplation over a drink at the bar. But the gentle, character-driven approach is ultimately unmoving. There’s no forward motion propelling the film. For a film about music, it never quite finds a rhythm that works for it. Offermann’s flirtations with his landlord played by Toni Collette is as about as bland and boring as you can get. Clemons’ relationship struggles with her girlfriend don’t offer that much more to the stagnant feeling, but it at least represents a gay relationship in a refreshingly natural, un-Hollywood way.

The music the father-daughter duo create is instantly catchy. Her impassioned voice fits perfectly with the soaring melodies and synth beats. Indie music fans will also smirk at mentions of such acts like Sleater Kinney, Animal Collective, and another band whose singer makes a cameo. In the end, the script hits all the music and indie drama notes but lacks the emotional pop to make the film a hit. The structure is there as well as all the parts. However, it doesn’t stand out from other feel-good charmers.

HEARTS BEAT LOUD is about those important transitions in life – the months between high school and college and the closing of your business and passion – and those lingering thoughts of anticipation and anxiety. While the drama didn’t hit the right notes to get sucked in, it definitely has its heart in the right place.

Overall score: 2.5 out of 5

See Drew Barrymore & John Krasinski In BIG MIRACLE Trailer

Due in theaters on February 3, 2012, watch the new trailer for BIG MIRACLE starring Drew Barrymore & John Krasinski.

Synopsis:

Inspired by the true story that captured the hearts of people across the world, the rescue adventure Big Miracle tells the amazing tale of a small town news reporter (John Krasinski) and a Greenpeace volunteer (Drew Barrymore) who are joined by rival world superpowers to save a family of majestic gray whales trapped by rapidly forming ice in the Arctic Circle. Local newsman Adam Carlson (Krasinski) can’t wait to escape the northern tip of Alaska for a bigger market. But just when the story of his career breaks, the world comes chasing it, too. With an oil tycoon, heads of state and hungry journalists descending upon the frigid outpost, the one who worries Adam the most is Rachel Kramer (Barrymore). Not only is she an outspoken environmentalist, she’s also his ex-girlfriend. With time running out, Rachel and Adam must rally an unlikely coalition of Inuit natives, oil companies and Russian and American military to set aside their differences and free the whales. As the world’s attention turns to the top of the globe, saving these endangered animals becomes a shared cause for nations entrenched against one another and leads to a momentary thaw in the Cold War.

From director Ken Kwapis, BIG MIRACLE also features Kristen Bell, Dermot Mulroney, Tim Blake Nelson, and Ted Danson.

If you’re hip and have been following the extraordinary HBO programming they have to offer, than you know how Ted Danson is making a big comeback beginning with CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM and BORED TO DEATH. But, 22 years after a quaint little comedy called THREE MEN AND A BABY hit theaters some of you may be wondering what’s happened to Tom Selleck and Steve Guttenberg. Where ever they’ve been, it looks as though they’ll be back for another go with plans to make THREE MEN AND A BRIDE.

WENN.com got an exclusive scoop from Steve Guttenberg that Disney is developing the film, which would follow the 1990 sequel THREE MEN AND A LITTLE LADY, and that they’re bringing the old boys back together. Yeah, Guttenberg, Danson and Selleck are apparently returning for the project. I can hear the excitement!

Show to Check Out: ‘Bored to Death’

bored-to-death

A show about a man struggling at the job he knows best until he gets a phone call not meant for him, a phone call from a woman who mistakes his number for that of a private eye.   And what can this man do otherwise but pretend to be a private eye and solve cases with the help of his goofy and hindering friends.   Though this may sound familiar to some, and I do mean some, as it is almost about the same as the Andy Richter starring Andy Barker P.I. that had a short run on NBC a few years ago.   But fortunately for this show it boasts a bit of a more upscale cast as well as being on HBO where more adult like situations can run rampant and cursing is almost a requirement.

The show stars Jason Schwartzman, a struggling writer come hapless investigator, and from the trailer that is available on the HBO website it looks like it could be a little darling of a show.   From what is viewable from the trailer it looks like a good, quirky show that of course has to be set in New York.   And even though that becomes the typical back drop for most crime shows it definitely looks like they infuse some good old Woody Allen spirit into it.   It also looks to be paying tribute to old detective books as he hangs out in the shadows of New York and has to deal with his fair share of femme fatales.   Which they look to have some decent talent with Kristen Wiig and Parker Posey popping up somewhere along in the season.

As for the encumbering and necessary sidekicks they’ve brought in some decent talent with Ted Danson as Schwartzman’s magazine editor who finds out what he’s doing and insists on tagging along.   And for all those Hangover fans out there we have none other than the rising comic star himself Zach Galifinakis as a comic book illustrator and close friend of Schwartzman’s character.   They both look like they will be pretty funny additions to the show.   If you want to know more about the show definitely head over to HBO and check out the trailer and there’s actually a decent blog by the creator, Jonathan Ames, that sheds more light on the show and how the main character is based a lot off of him so it’s worth a check out.   As for the show, it will premiere September 20th at 9:30 on HBO so check it and give it some support and love.

HBO Might Have a Winner with ‘Bored to Death’

schwartzmanboredtodeath

The show will star Jason Schwartzman and Zach Galifianakis who are both incredibly funny, if you throw in Ted Danson you might have a real winner here. This is the premise for the show which starts in September:

The Jonathan Ames-penned “Bored” centers on Jonathan (Schwartzman), a struggling thirtysomething writer with a drinking problem in Brooklyn who, following a painful breakup with his girlfriend, decides to emulate his heroes from the novels of Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett.

Watch the teaser below and tell me what you guys think..this sounds like a winner to me but I love everything Schwartzman touches.
