Films Announced For 2014 Sundance Film Festival

Sundance Institute announced today the films selected for the U.S. and World Cinema Dramatic and Documentary Competitions and the out-of-competition section of the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, January 16-26 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden and Sundance, Utah.

Robert Redford, President & Founder of Sundance Institute said, “That the Festival has evolved and grown as it has over the past 30 years is a credit to both our audiences and our artists, who continue to find ways to take risks and open our minds to the power of story. This year’s films and artists promise to do the same.”

For the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, 118 feature-length films were selected, representing 37 countries and 54 first-time filmmakers, including 34 in competition. These films were selected from 12,218 submissions (72 more than for 2013), including 4,057 feature-length films and 8,161 short films. Of the feature film submissions, 2,014 were from the U.S. and 2,043 were international. 97 feature films at the Festival will be world premieres.

In addition to those announced today, the Festival presents feature-length films in the Spotlight, Park City at Midnight, New Frontier, Premieres and Documentary Premieres sections. Those announcements, as well as selections for the Short Film section and new Sundance Kids section of films for younger audiences, are forthcoming.

On Day One, January 16, 2014, the Festival will screen one film from each of the four Competition sections, as well as one shorts program.

A selection of films from the 2014 Festival will be among those presented at other Sundance Institute programs throughout the year, including the Sundance London film and music festival, April 25-27 at The O2, and the NEXT WEEKEND summer film festival in Los Angeles.

U.S. DRAMATIC COMPETITION
Presenting the world premieres of 16 narrative feature films, the Dramatic Competition offers Festivalgoers a first look at groundbreaking new voices in American independent film.

Camp X-Ray / U.S.A. (Director and screenwriter: Peter Sattler) — A young woman is stationed as a guard in Guantanamo Bay, where she forms an unlikely friendship with one of the detainees. Cast: Kristen Stewart, Payman Maadi, Lane Garrison, J.J. Soria, John Carroll Lynch.

Dear White People / U.S.A. (Director and screenwriter: Justin Simien) — Four black students attend an Ivy League college where a riot breaks out over an “African American” themed party thrown by white students. With tongue planted firmly in cheek, the film explores racial identity in postracial America while weaving a story about forging one’s unique path in the world. Cast: Tyler Williams, Tessa Thompson, Teyonah Parris, Brandon Bell.

Fishing Without Nets / U.S.A., Somalia, Kenya (Director: Cutter Hodierne, Screenwriters: Cutter Hodierne, John Hibey, David Burkman) — A story of pirates in Somalia told from the perspective of a struggling, young Somali fisherman. Cast: Abdikani Muktar, Abdi Siad, Abduwhali Faarah, Abdikhadir Hassan, Reda Kateb, Idil Ibrahim.

God’s Pocket / U.S.A. (Director: John Slattery, Screenwriters: John Slattery, Alex Metcalf) — When Mickey’s stepson Leon is killed in a construction “accident,” Mickey tries to bury the bad news with the body. But when the boy’s mother demands the truth, Mickey finds himself stuck between a body he can’t bury, a wife he can’t please, and a debt he can’t pay. 2011 Sundance Film Festival Announces Films In NEXT, Spotlight, New Frontier, Park City At Midnight

PARK CITY, UT – Sundance Institute announced today the lineup of films selected to screen in the 2011 Sundance Film Festival out-of-competition sections NEXT (<=>), Spotlight, New Frontier, Park City at Midnight, as well as a new Native Showcase. 2011 Sundance Film Festival Announces Films in Competition

PARK CITY, UT — Sundance Institute announced today the lineup of films selected to screen in the U.S. and World Cinema Dramatic and Documentary Competitions for the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. In addition to the four Competition Categories, the Festival presents films in six out-of-competition sections to be announced on December 2. On Day One, the Festival will forego the convention of one opening night film and instead screen one narrative film and one documentary from both the U.S. and World Cinema competitions, as well as one shorts program.

John Cooper, Director of the Sundance Film Festival said, “The Festival is a challenge to narrowly define. It is all at once exciting, fun, crazy, engaging, visceral, and sometimes even painful. We can explain storylines, we can share what we know of each artist’s unique journey, but ultimately what we will experience for 10 days in January is different for each of us. Benavides Born (Director: Amy Wendel; Screenwriters: Daniel Meisel and Amy Wendel) – A high school senior in a forgotten town has earned admission to the University of Texas at Austin but can’t afford to go. ANIMAL KINGDOM Trailer is “All Out of Love”

“…and it’s so lost without you.”

I blame the three hours of sleep I was getting at the time, but there was just not enough energy left in me to review ANIMAL KINGDOM at the time I saw it at Sundance this year.  I know.  Excuses are for losers.  Nonetheless, the film is one that has resonated with me ever since seeing it, and I have a feeling it is going to be a force to be reckoned with when it hits theaters this Summer.

A family/crime drama set in Melbourne, Australia, the film, written and directed by David Michod, does have a tinge of THE DEPARTED to it, though this is mostly the side of the lawless and not the police, headed here by Guy Pearce.  The police taking a back seat on this one is no problem, though, as the gangsters are played impeccably by Australian actors like Joel Edgerton, newcomer James Frecheville, and Ben Mendelsohn, who gives an unnerving and villainous portrayal that is sure to generate some awards buzz later in the year.

REDFORD SENT US About to Blow Movie Blogging Wide Open

Have you ever looked at a movie site’s coverage of Sundance or SXSW and wondered to yourself, “What the hell must that be like?”  In a nutshell, lots of running, little sleep, bad food, and (hopefully) good writing.  But it’s all fun.  It’s hard to describe for those of you who haven’t gone through it, and so, our former head honcho, Scott Hutcheson, and THE WHITE TIGER director, AJ Meadows, have decided to take you behind the scenes.  REDFORD SENT US is a film about Sundance, but more importantly, it’s about the festival from the viewpoint of the press and movie bloggers.

The trailer for this has been released, and don’t let the fact that I’m a co-producer or that I am featured in it sway you from watching it or avoiding it.  It looks like it’s going to be quite entertaining, and features interviews with some heavy hitters at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival including festival director John Cooper, THE FREEBIE director Katie Aselton, and fellow bloggers and press like Chase Whale and Rusty Gordon of Gordon and the Whale and Devin Faraci of CHUD.

Sundance Review: BURIED

How do you make it interesting watching a man trapped in a box for 90 minutes?  Evidently, it’s pretty easy.  You just have Chris Sparling handle the screenwriting duties, put Rodrigo Cortes at the helm, and have that man trapped in the coffin be Ryan Reynolds.  That’s not only an equation resulting in cinematic gold, it results in BURIED, one of the most suspenseful and powerful movie experiences you are likely to have in quite a while.

Reynolds plays Paul Conroy, a contracted truck driver in Iraq whose convoy is attacked.  Paul is knocked unconscious, and, when he awakens, he finds himself in a coffin buried beneath the sand.  His only companions in this coffin are a lighter and a cell phone, and using these, Paul attempts to contact someone, anyone, who can help get him out before his air runs out.

First and foremost, Cortes’ direction on this film is staggering.  Paul might be trapped in the box, but, through the camera work utilized here, we never struggle to catch what is going on inside it.  Cortes pulls the camera back way overhead Paul’s laying body, resulting in a surprising number of long shots.  The lens usage in BURIED is flawless, and it manipulates the audience in all the right ways to make you feel precisely what the director wants you to feel.

Don’t let all of these long shots fool you, either.  This is an extremely claustrophobic film, and anyone who has a fear of being in Paul’s predicament (to judge the reactions of the crowd at my screening would indicate there are several people with just that) might find themselves holding their breath more than a couple of times.  That’s just when Paul is laying there contemplating his situation or banging on the walls around him.  Imagine the sense of dread and suspense that builds when he actually gets on the phone with his captors.

Set with the task of being stuck in the coffin all this time and, essentially, carrying the the entire film, is Ryan Reynolds, who hasn’t had much experience in the dramatic realm.  Reynolds is, in a nutshell, flawless in his performance here, able to engage in whatever emotion the mood of that scene calls for.  He runs the gamut from scared to angry to regretful to even a few lighter moments that help relieve all that tension.  The fact that he had to spend all his time in a 7X3 space with the ceiling a little more than a few inches away from him is one thing, but Reynolds also has to find it within himself to act, to bring this character to life and to make you feel sympathetic and,  occasionally, empathetic with the character at hand.  It is very nearly a flawless effort Reynolds gives here, and the constraints given him as an actor make the performance all the more awe-inspiring.

BURIED is a film that resonates.  Even now, nearly a week after having sat in the theater and experienced it, there are images and full segments of the film that cascade back into memory.  It is a marvelously crafted and astutely pieced together film that is equally as meticulous in the writing involved.  Chris Sparling has come up with a premise built for tension, and he was lucky enough to find a director in Cortes who could not only pull off what Sparling has written, he does so in impeccable fashion.  BURIED is not a horror film, but the sheer terror involved is definite.  Whether the central premise is one that keeps you awake at night at the very thought of what you might do or not, BURIED is a film that will knock such a fear into you.

You will hold your breath.

Sundance Review: ENTER THE VOID

Sometimes there are casual movies you watch, leave, go home, and probably forget, forever stored away in your head somewhere you will never access again.  These films are relatively easy to get through.  Other times, there are films like ENTER THE VOID, the return to feature film making from IRREVERSIBLE director Gaspar Noe.  His films are harsh, hypnotic, and just about as visually and narratively challenging as you are likely to see.  ENTER THE VOID is no exception, and it may even be considered more of a “marathon” viewing than IRREVERSIBLE.  To say ENTER THE VOID is daring is putting the feeling of having seen the film into a single word.  This neither can nor should it be the case.  It has to be seen to be believed, and whether you enjoy the film or not, there is no denying the level of appreciation that should be given to it.

Using a rather complex format to tell a simple story, ENTER THE VOID centers on a young brother and sister, played by Nathaniel Brown and Paz de la Huerta, respectively living in the flashy and high-octane confines of Tokyo.  The sister, Linda, is a stripper.  The brother, Oscar, is a low level drug dealer.  They care for one another and have long since made a bond that they would never abandon one another.  So, when Oscar is shot dead in a botched drug deal, his spirit continues on, observing the consequences of his actions on others, and jumping around in time looking backwards and forwards at the events leading to and from this central event.

Noe is not a film maker who is satisfied with simply aiming his camera and shooting the scenes.  His camera is forever moving, looping the point of view (of which, for the most part, is through Oscar’s eyes) in and out of the bright lights and dank alleyways of both Tokyo and Oscar’s conscious thoughts.  It is all cut together masterfully to appear as a single, continuous shot, and it is some of the most inventive and noteworthy usage of camera movement I have ever seen.  It has been nearly eight years since IRREVERSIBLE, and I would be very curious to find how much of this time was spent crafting and pulling off the shots used here.

At a staggering 156 minutes (at least, this was the cut I saw), the film is a visual marathon, one that is not for everyone. From the hyperactive and overpowering opening credits (which drew deserved applause from the audience) to the 20-minute orgy scene near the conclusion, the style at work here seems to be working against the crowd rather than for it. Challenging seems like such a light word when used in context with this film.  ENTER THE VOID fights its audience, dares them to sit and take in every bit of its visual brilliance, of which the film has in abundance.  Even listening to the actors batting mumbled lines of dialog back and forth, more often than not wholly unnaturally, does not take you out of the film enough as to not appreciate Noe’s style.  The only element of the film that may do that is Noe’s decision to pound the ideals of the film deep into the viewer’s head.  Oscar’s soul is on a journey, and we take this journey with him every step of the way.  The film is every bit of that two and a half hours plus.  In fact, it even feels longer.  This is completely unnecessary, and even the decision to split the film into five segments (no chapters are announced, but that describes what happens here better than any other word) does nothing to help the time along.

Gaspar Noe makes no bones that his films are not for everyone.  He doesn’t want just anyone to watch his films, only those who can appreciate the audacious nature with which he paints his pictures.  Words simply cannot describe the visual boldness at play with ENTER THE VOID.  Unfortunately, not everyone will see it to understand this, and even a large number of those who do choose to see it won’t be able to make it to the end.  It is a hearty meal of a film, an epic adventure of style and substance.  Noe is back, and if it takes hiatuses like this to hone such daring film making, there is no one who should stand in his way.  I cannot think of anyone working with such bold conviction.  Even now, having digested ENTER THE VOID a bit, I cannot completely say I enjoyed it.  That does not stop me from saying it is nothing short of a masterpiece.
