Toy Fair 2017: Funko

SONY DSC

Toy Fair is an annual trade show where hundreds of toy companies get together to showcase their latest innovations for buyers and press. The following is a photo recap from the Funko booth. To see the rest of our coverage, click HERE.

SONY DSC

As someone who gave custom Batman Funko Pops to the groomsmen at my wedding, I had to stop by their booth during my Toy Fair trip. Unfortunately their area was forever crowded so I had to settle for a quick walkthrough on my own. This does not come as much of a shock though. To say that Funko has transformed into a phenomenon these last few years is a bit of an understatement.

SONY DSC

Funko’s Pop line of collectible vinyl figures started with Batman and now features thousands of characters from Film, TV, comics, and pop culture. There are also seemingly as many variations of Batman as there are total number of properties they license. The Pop brand has expanded to include t-shirts, household items, and several monthly subscriptions based on properties like Marvel, DC Comics, Star Wars and now Disney. Funko also sells Dorbz, Mystery Minis, Rock Candy, Vinyl Vixens, Super Deluxe, Hikari, and several different lines of action figures.

SONY DSC

Comparing the first wave of Funko’s to the latest generation reveals stunning progress on these figures. They have an uncanny ability of capturing an actor’s appearance into a perfectly realized 3D vinyl caricature. Just look at the JOHN WICK, GODFATHER, TWIN PEAKS, WESTWORLD, and STRANGER THINGS figures. You do not need any packaging to tell you the identity of each figure.

SONY DSC

While there were hundreds of Funko items on display, I tried to focus my photos just on the ones that are relatively new or have not yet been released. Below are some of my favorites, including a peak at some new lines…

Bugs Bunny and Michael Jordan – SPACE JAM Midnights at The Tivoli

spacejame-heade

“I tought I taw – I did! I did! I did tee Michael Jordan!”

space-jam-disneyscreencaps.com-7328

SPACE JAM screens midnights this Friday and Saturday (August 21st and 22nd) at The Tivoli Theater as part of the Reel at The Tivoli Midnight Show.

spacejamweb-0224

There’s a great scene into SPACE JAM (1996) when Bill Murray makes an unbilled appearance at a basketball game with Michael Jordan and the Looney Tunes. An alien creature (voiced by Danny DeVito) says, “Hey! I didn’t know Dan Aykroyd was in this picture!” Bill Murray helps out the Looney Tunes team and then leaves the scene. But he comes back later again at the end when Larry Byrd takes a seat next to Bill, who, watching Michael Jordan dribbling the ball on court, says, “That coulda been me.”

spacejamweb-0222

You probably remember the clever mix of live action and cartoon animation in WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT (1988) which we screened last month at The Tivoli’s Midnight Show. SPACE JAM is another good example of that from a few years later. The plot finds basketball player Michael Jordan retired from the game and playing baseball. Meanwhile, far away in another part of the galaxy Mr. Swackhammer (Danny DeVito) plans to kidnap the Looney Tunes to be an attraction at his struggling theme park. When the five little aliens get there, the Looney Tunes lead by Bugs Bunny think it’s fair that they get a chance to defend themselves in a game of basketball. Soon enough however these little aliens turn into the giant ‘Monstars’. So the Looney Tunes get Michael Jordan to help them. Also starring Wayne Knight as Stan Podolak, Daffy Duck, Elmer Fudd, Porky Pig, Tazmanian Devil, Sylvester and Tweety, Yosemite Sam, Foghorn Leghorn, Pepe Le Pew and Lola Bunny. Featuring fantastic songs, including Seal’s “Fly Like An Eagle”, Monica’s “For You I Will”, and of course, R. Kelly’s “I Believe I Can Fly”. You’ll have the chance to enjoy all the sports, songs, noise, comedy and toons this weekend (August 21th and 22nd), when SPACE JAM shows at The Tivoli Theater as part of the Reel Late at the Tivoli Midnight show.

The Tivoli Announces the ‘Reel Late’ Midnight Line-Up – JURASSIC PARK, THE ROOM, ZARDOZ

midnghts-header2

“YOU’RE TEARING ME APART, LISA!”

MIDNIGHTSX4

Another great lineup of midnight movies for the ‘Reel Late at The Tivoli’ for late July through early September. It’s a typically good variety of titles that will draw the late night movie buff crowd and a couple of retro surprises are to be found. The Midnight Movie experience has always catered to a college-age crowd and that’s the way it should be. When I was that age, in the early ’80s, midnight standards included A CLOCKWORK ORANGE (1971), THE GRADUATE (1967), NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1968), KING OF HEARTS (1966), and HAROLD AND MAUDE (1971). Those last two haven’t shown in many years. KING OF HEARTS especially seems to have fallen off the cult movie radar , so imagine my surprise when I saw that the Tivoli had HAROLD AND MAUDE as part of their new line-up. That’ll be some old school midnight fun and I hope it gets a good crowd. ZARDOZ, a trippy/cheesy sci-fi mess from 1974 has Sean Connery running around in a red diaper and is also a brilliant, throwback choice.

Of course the big event of the summer will be July 31st and August 1st when there will be thousands of plastic spoons flying through the air and grown men in tuxedos will be throwing footballs three feet away from each other in the Tivoli’s lobby. It’s of course THE ROOM and the return of the one and only Tommy Wiseau, the film’s amazing triple-threat talent writer/director/star. When Tommy was last in town, three years ago, both shows sold out  and Tommy brought a big box of  THE ROOM T-Shirts, DVD’s, posters, ‘Johnny’ bobbleheads  and more to sign for his legion of adoring fans. I’m sure this summer’s event will be just as fun. Tickets are $15 and are already on sale at the Tivoli’s box office or site.

MIDNIGHTSX4-2

HAROLD AND MAUDE isn’t the oldest film on the new midnight schedule. THE WIZARD OF OZ from 1939 will screen midnights August 14th and 15th and there will be a special noon show on Saturday the 15th.

Reel Late at the Tivoli takes place every Friday and Saturday night and We Are Movie Geeks own Tom Stockman (that’s me!) is there with custom trivia questions about the films and always has DVDs, posters, and other cool stuff to give away. I can’t wait to write ZARDOZ trivia! Ticket prices are $8 (except THE ROOM  which is $15). We hope to see everyone late at night in the coming months.

The Tivoli is located at 6350 Delmar in The Loop. Visit Landmark’s The Tivoli’s website HERE
