SMURFS: THE LOST VILLAGE – Review

smurfslostvillage

“Tra-la-lalala”A simple tune that quickly transformed into an earwig which burrowed into the brains of a generation (“Generation X” to be more precise). Yes, it’s the rallying song of that big, blue behemoth of kid-friendly franchises, the Smurfs. Those petite (three apples high) magical imps were introduced by Belgian cartoonist Peyo (AKA Pierre Colliford) way, way back in 1958. They were a merchandising phenom in Europe, but didn’t truly achieve worldwide superstar status until they descended on the US thanks to TV cartoon titans Bill Hanna and Joe Barbara (the creators of The Flintstones and Scooby Doo also co-wrote that too-catchy theme song with Hoyt Curtin) and became the anchor for NBC’s Saturday morning line-up in 1981 through 1989. Tons of toys and imitations (remember the Snorks?) followed, but things were quiet in their hidden spot in the magic forest for the next twenty years or so. And then Sony Pictures decided to exploit the nostalgic affection that thirty-somethings still had for them. And they’ve got kids of their own now, so let’s return to the woods. The result was the 2011 box office hit, THE SMURFS mixing live-action stars led by Neil Patrick Harris with the now CGI-animated blue pixies. Of course a sequel followed two years later. But now Sony is returning them to their animated adventure roots, much like the dubbed import THE SMURFS AND THE MAGIC FLUTE back in 1983. They’re still computer-delinated, but there ‘s no cavorting in front of second-unit shot real backdrops. We’re exploring that vast forest in SMURFS: THE LOST VILLAGE.

But first we’ll drop in on a typical day in a “found” village, the home of the Smurfs. Everyone seems to be having a happy “smurfy’ day, all but one, the lone blue (skin and mood) lady, Smurfette (voiced by Demi Lovato). While most of her pals are named for their personality (Vain Smurf, Nosy Smurf, etc) or job (Farmer Smurf, Baker Smurf, etc.), her own name denotes nothing specific (“What’s an ‘ette'”?). Naturally she breaks the rules and ventures into the lush Forbidden Forest in search of answers. Luckily(?) three of her pals and protectors, Clumsy Smurf (Jack McBrayer), Brainy Smurf (Danny Pudi), and Hefty Smurf (Joe Manganiello), sneak off just behind her. Of course they’re discovered by their arch foe, the crafty wizard Gargamel (Rainn Wilson), who desires them for his “dark magic”. Soon after finding a mysterious yellow cap and spotting an entrance to a walled off section of the woods, Smurfette and company are scooped up by Gargamel’s “hench-bird” (is it a vulture/dodo hybrid?). The sorcerer spies the cap right before Papa Smurf (Mandy Patinkin) launches a rescue. Back at home base, the angry patriarch “grounds” the quartet, but Smurfette is concerned that Gargamel will locate the hidden village. The four friends sneak out and rush back to the woods to warn those behind that wall about the wizard. It’s too late since Garagamel, his bird, and his devious feline sidekick Azrael are in hot pursuit. Can our heroes get there in time and thwart his evil schemes?

As with far too many animated features, this film resorts to “stunt casting”, using well-known vocal talent from TV and movies, perhaps to lure in the adult crowd. I’ll admit to playing an audio guessing game (is that …mmm..no, it’s …) as my mind wandered during most of the 89 minute running time. Fortunately many casting choices worked out well, often helping the overall tone. This is true of a trio of sitcom vets. Pudi (TV’s “Community” and “Powerless”) and McBrayer (“30 Rock”) bring a lot of manic energy to their roles of Brainy and Clumsy. But the movie MVP may be the wonderful Wilson as the snickering sneering sorcerer who not nearly as menacing as he believes himself to be. You may want to rush to the exits at the final fade-out, but try to stick around for the end credits as Wilson riffs (could it be “ad-libs”) on the words and phrases scrolling over his bare noggin (“Matte Painting?! Is that really a thing?!”). I wished there was more of that in the middle of the flick! Lovato and Manganiello are plucky and sweet as story’s (almost) romantic couple (not to worry parents, it’s just hinted). They bring more to their roles than the biggest names, though. Patinkin seems too somber and cranky, making us miss Papa’s previous voice, the late great Jonathan Winters, even more. And Julie Roberts is far too low energy as the queen of said “lost village” SmurfWillow (oops, a teeny spoiler), though another sitcom pro Elle Kemper (“The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”) amps up the final act considerably.

Like their original TV episodes this new feature adventure is bouncy and colorful, while not being too achingly saccharine (it comes mighty close). There are a few spooky scenes, but nothing to upset the wee ones (though their older sibs are sure to get antsy). Dreamworks had a lot more fun with another set of whimsical imps in last year’s TROLLS which was aiming for a slightly more mature audience. This new film is a fairly good way to introduce children to the theatre experience, since it’s really aimed squarely at the “pre-K” crowd. It certainly lands on the gentler side of family flicks with none of the wild “in your face” aggressive hi-jinks of the HOODWINKED films or last year’s ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE (the “teaser” for the upcoming EMOJI MOVIE played before the feature…uh oh). I attended a “flat” screening, so I can’t say if many of the action sequences (with lots off leaping and flying about) that looked to be designed for 3D worked. Luckily the blue folks have some visually interesting playmates. Florescent green bunnies bounce through dark caves while dragonflies that breathe fire (like..you know..) offer transport. Oh, and Brainy’s got a nifty ladybug pal that’s a camera (for ‘selfies’), a scanner, and a printer (bet it’ll be the big toy gizmo for Easter). After the edgy wonders from Disney, Pixar, and Dreamworks, this timid tale is a tad tedious, but for the parents of the very young SMURFS: THE MAGIC VILLAGE is an occasionally amusing, bland, but bearable kiddie matinée.

HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 2 Among Films Announced On Sony Pictures Animation Slate

htl890.1028_lm_v1

Sony Pictures Animation today gave an update on their lineup of upcoming projects – which includes the animated motion picture debut of a classic comic strip figure, an original tale from one of the form’s most multi-faceted filmmakers, as well as the continued expansion of two of the studio’s most popular worlds.

Bob Osher, President of Sony Pictures Digital Productions, states, “I am really excited by the variety of our upcoming projects as well as the amazing talent working on them.”

ft050.1069_lm_v2

  • Sony Pictures Animation has hired animation industry veteran Kelly Asbury (Shrek 2Gnomeo & Juliet) to direct an all new, fully computer-animated film featuring the world’s most popular blue creatures. The family adventure, currently going by the working title The Untitled Smurfs Movie, is anticipated in theaters August 2015. Jordan Kerner (The Smurfs) is producing, with Mary Ellen Bauder (Hotel Transylvania) co-producing.  The original two live action/CG hybrid Smurfs movies from Sony Pictures Animation grossed a combined $910 million worldwide.
  • Genndy Tartakovsky will return to the director’s chair for Hotel Transylvania 2, scheduled for September 2015, which will bring back Adam Sandler’s Dracula.  Sandler and Robert Smigel are taking on writing duties for the comedy.
  • The uber prolific Genndy Tartakovsky is also busy working an all-new CG take on the comic strip hero, Popeye, all the while developing an original idea for Sony Pictures Animation titled Genndy Tartakovsky’s Can You Imagine?, described as a fantastic journey through one boy’s imagination.  Producer Michelle Murdocca will once again work closely with Tartakovsky.

Kelly Asbury, who was nominated for the Cannes Film Festival’s Palme d’Or for Shrek 2, offers, “I’m really excited about taking the Smurfs in a completely new fresh direction. We’re not making a Smurfs 3 film. Our character designs and environments will be stylistically closer to the original artwork created by Peyo. Our story will explore the beginnings of the beloved little blue creatures in a fun full CG animated comedy-adventure for every generation to enjoy.”

13-time Emmy Award nominee Tartakovsky himself says, “It’s good to be back at the Hotel Transylvania, and I’m very excited to work on Popeye, a character that I’ve loved since I was a kid. I’m also looking forward to developing an entirely new and original animated feature here at Sony Pictures Animation. This is an exciting time for me and for the studio.”

Global SMURFS Day Returns Saturday, June 22

SONY PICTURES ENTERTAINMENT GLOBAL SMURFS DAY

On Saturday, June 22, in celebration of the birthday of Peyo, the creator of the Smurfs (born June 25, 1928), Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation will once again coordinate events all over the world as part of Global Smurfs Day, a worldwide event in anticipation of the release of THE SMURFS 2, in theaters July 31.

This will be the second celebration of Global Smurfs Day in what is quickly becoming a tradition.  In 2011, the round-the-world events included painting one of the famous White Towns of Andalusia blue and setting a new record for Largest Gathering of People Dressed as Smurfs within a 24-hour Period (Multiple Venues).

This year, the studio has lined up an equally impressive program of events, highlighted by a worldwide Smurf Ambassadors initiative, in which over 40 ambassadors from 28 countries will represent Smurfs fans from around the world with a special day of events celebrating Peyo’s creation.  The ambassadors – celebrities, prominent journalists, and contest winners among them – will dress as Smurfs as they begin their day in Brussels, where Peyo’s daughter Veronique Culliford will officially appoint them as Smurf representatives of their countries.

The fun-filled (if irreverent) ceremony will take place under the watchful eye of an important Brussels monument:  a Smurf statue unveiled just a year before.  Freshly charged with their ambassadorial duties, the group will board a Thalys train and shoot off to Paris, the locale of the adventures in Columbia Pictures / Sony Pictures Animation’s The Smurfs 2.  With a few surprises in store and a sightseeing tour of the French capital, the ambassadors will be tasked with a mission that is the stuff of high diplomacy:  to leave a happy trail of blue smiles in their wake, and herald the arrival of the new film.

ft050.1069_lm_v2

The Ambassadors will also be taking photos and posting them on Instagram with the hashtag #GlobalSmurfsDay.  The Ambassadors’ photos will stream to the official Global Smurfs Day microsite at www.GlobalSmurfsDay.net, where users can also virtually check in to Global Smurfs Day activities and find information about all worldwide events, official photos, and a sizzle reel.

Festivals and celebrations will be dedicated to the Smurfs in locations as far and away as the Buenos Aires Planetarium,Mumbai’s Imagica theme park, and Rio de Janeiro’s iconic Sugarloaf Mountain.  Blue brushes will brighten Portugal’s Cova da Moura neighborhood and paint daycare centers and orphanages in South Africa.  In Australia, Surfers Paradise will officially become Smurfers Paradise for the day, with local signage to match.  Moscow’s famed Gorky Park and Dublin’s Ha’Penny Bridge will be covered in smurf-blue flowers.

Smurfs will visit children’s hospitals and media centers; invade Warsaw’s Old City Square; engage in sand sculpture marathons; run Smurfathons around the world; and kick off a massive sing-along with the group Right Said Fred in London.  And in Los Angeles, families will enjoy the day with appearances by the Smurfs, play the Ubisoft video game, sample Menchie’s Smurfberry frozen yogurt, and participate in other fun activities; in addition, the U.S. Forest Service and Ad Council’s Discover the Forest campaign will be on hand to distribute activity booklets and encourage children and their families to get outside and experience the many benefits of nature, and in the evening, families will be able to catch the first Smurfs film at an evening outdoor screening.

Commenting on the announcement, Weinstock said, “We’re thrilled that we can continue the tradition we started on the first film with an all-new Global Smurfs Day celebration.  This is a great way to honor Peyo’s birthday and his legacy, by bringing the world together across generations for a day of fun and festivities.”

In this sequel to Columbia Pictures / Sony Pictures Animation’s hybrid live action/animated family blockbuster comedy The Smurfs™, the evil wizard Gargamel creates a couple of mischievous Smurf-like creatures called the Naughties that he hopes will let him harness the all-powerful, magical Smurf-essence. But when he discovers that only a real Smurf can give him what he wants, and only a secret spell that Smurfette knows can turn the Naughties into real Smurfs, Gargamel kidnaps Smurfette and brings her to Paris, where he has been winning the adoration of millions as the world’s greatest sorcerer.

tlra270.1046_com_lm_v12_r

It’s up to Papa, Clumsy, Grouchy, and Vanity to return to our world, reunite with their human friends Patrick and Grace Winslow, and rescue her! Will Smurfette, who has always felt different from the other Smurfs, find a new connection with the Naughties Vexy and Hackus or will the Smurfs convince her that their love for her is True Blue?

The film is directed by Raja Gosnell and produced by Jordan Kerner.  The screenplay is by J. David Stem & David N. Weiss and Jay Scherick & David Ronn and Karey Kirkpatrick with a story by J. David Stem & David N. Weiss & Jay Scherick & David Ronn, Based on the Characters and Works of Peyo.
