What if you could make your peace with your own history? What if you could, as an adult, go back and make peace with your younger self, and make your peace with the parents we failed to understand when we were growing up? What if you could go back and reconnect with your parents with the benefit of a lifetime of wisdom and perspective? These are the questions director Shawn Levy asks in his latest film THE ADAM PROJECT. Starring Ryan Reynolds, Walker Scobell, Jennifer Garner, Mark Ruffalo, Zoe Saldaña and Catherine Keener, the film is the story of a time-traveling pilot Adam Reed (Reynolds) who teams up with his younger self, (Scobell), and his late father, Louis Reed (Ruffalo) to come to terms with his past, and losses, while saving the future.
In this throwback to the sci-films from the 80’s, the filmmaker proves with THE ADAM PROJECT the power of nostalgia. It’s filled with themes movie going audiences witnessed and embraced with the likes of E.T., THE LAST STARFIGHTER, EXPLORERS and BACK TO THE FUTURE, with a hint of RETURN OF THE JEDI, as well as exciting battles with time soldiers, evil villains, de-cloaking spaceships and disintegration effects.
At the heart of the story is how these characters come to terms with loss and the past. While Adam’s journey in saving the world involves reconnecting with his younger self and teaming up with his dead father, the driving force is what sent him on this path to begin with – his search for his wife Laura (Saldaña), who is sent into the past by time-traveling supervillain Sorian (Keener) who stole and profited from the invention created by the “Godfather of Time Travel” Louis (Ruffalo).
The chemistry between the young newcomer Scobell and Reynolds is spot on and their adventure adds a beautiful mix of adventure-fantasy with real character emotions.
However the best scene and one driven by the quiet soulful acting of Reynolds is where a grown-up Adam offers his mother (Garner) the encouragement and acknowledgment of how she and her young son are both still grieving with the loss of husband and father. It’s something she never expects, but at the moment she needs it most. The father-son storyline may take center stage in The Adam Project, but it’s this one scene in particular that gave the film one of its most touching moments. “Boys always come back for their mamas.”
Huge thanks to Levy for casting Ruffalo and Garner, who previously starred in another fantasy film from 2004, as the couple Louis and Ellie Reed. Haven’t we all been waiting for a 13 GOING ON 30 reunion?

The Adam Project is the second creative collaboration between Levy and Reynolds off the heels of Free Guy and it was just announced the two will go for a third helping with DEADPOOL 3 as first reported by The Hollywood Reporter

Of note are the artists also bring the audience an emotional character story first and foremost and the time travel device to facilitate the story. Their work on THE ADAM PROJECT make the audience really care about the the characters’ journey in the end.
Visual Effects Supervisor Alessandro Ongaro (Ghostbusters: Afterlife) delivers a certain wow-factor without tipping too far into sci-fi. The time soldiers’ decloaking and decimation effects (think cool digital poprocks candy) were created by VFX studio Scanline to give them a more tactile feel than what would traditionally be seen in sci-fi movies without it being too violent, Editor Dean Zimmerman (Free Guy, Stranger Things), who has worked with Shawn Levy for 20 years, beautifully cuts together a film that keeps the pacing of the story moving and provides some cool battle scenes, and Director of Photography Tobias Schliessler uses classic framing and uncomplicated lighting in order to draw the audience’s attention to the characters at all times.
What gives the film its emotional cohesiveness is composer Rob Simonsen’s simple score, while also making it sci-fi epic. He creates a futuristic feel with his use of orchestra and piano but keeps the human drama very human. Simonsen truly sets the tone for the entire film with the sound “The Adam Suite Theme.”
In the end THE ADAM PROJECT is a wonderful movie and a contemporary version of a movie really not being made anymore — the Spielberg, Robert Zemeckis-type action-adventure movie like The Last Starfighter, E.T. , The Goonies or Back to the Future – and one to watch with the family.

And lastly time travel!!

The Summer season is “fun and games” time at the local multiplex. Oh, but you’re thinking, “Isn’t it always”. Well, sure many still have big arcade areas around their entrances. Yes, but we’re talking about the content on the individual screens. And, after a year trying to entertain ourselves at home, the reopening (hopefully) studio flicks are reflecting much of that “home content”. As usual (in the “fun” category) we’re seeing the comic book-based blockbusters with recent entries THE SUICIDE SQUAD and BLACK WIDOW from several weeks ago (but still on the entertainment page). and a big flick was actually based on a toy, as the action figure SNAKE EYES emerged from the decades-long GI Joe toy franchise. As for the games, we’ve not seen many based on the board ones like CLUE (hurrah) or BATTLESHIP (shudder), although there’s been a “reboot” on the iconic video game MORTAL KOMBAT. This weekend’s new film is certainly inspired by that world, though it goes beyond the action/battle genre to encompass broad slapstick comedy, fantasy, and (really) romantic comedy. And it’s all part of the odyssey of an ordinary FREE GUY..
The title Guy (Ryan Reynolds), often referred to as “Blue Shirt Guy”, is an ordinary fellow living a routine life as a resident of “Free City”. Every morning he wakes up at the same exact time, eats the same breakfast, grabs the same “chain coffee store” pick-me-up, as he dodges all matter of street mayhem (shoot-outs, car-chasers, copter crashes) on the way to his bank teller job. Luckily he has a work BFF, aptly nicknamed Buddy (Lil Rel Howery). who’s an ineffectual security guard. During the daily armed hold-up, the two make weekend plans. But then something, no someone, breaks Guy’s routine, He is perplexed by a mysterious and beautiful woman, who is later called “Molotov Girl” (Jodie Comer). She tells Guy that a pair of sunglasses worn by the criminals will literally open his eyes. Wearing a pair, Guy sees floating signs and icons, along with messengers and secret pathways. Yes, it’s all part of a subscriber-driven online “first-person” video game called, of course, “Free City”, and in the “non-virtual” world, MG is controlled by disgruntled game-designer Millie (Comer too) who wants to wreck the company, Soonami, who stole her work. A big part of her plan involves making Guy, who is known as an NPC (Non-Player Character) more active and a force for good. At the big tech company that owns FC, two of the techs, “Mouser” (Utkarsh Ambudkar) and “Keys” (Joe Kerry), who was Millie’s old design partner and pal, try to go into FC and stop Guy. They fail as Guy soon begins a relationship, a romantic one, with MG/Millie. All this havoc is impacting sales of the upcoming “upgrade of FC, so Soonami’s founder/CEO, the arrogant Antoine (Taiki Waitiki) instructs his staff to “scrub and reboot” FC before the “launch” in 48 or so hours. Can Millie find a way to thwart him, as she aids Guy in the fight to save his world, and himself?
Although he’s been keeping quite busy before the cameras, this is a side of Reynolds we’ve rarely gotten to see. Much of his recent work has been as the manic, often surly, motor-mouthed wiseguy delivering under-his-breath “burns” amidst the surrounding carnage, seen just a few weeks ago in THE HITMAN’S WIFE’S BODYGUARD, and as the star of the wildly popular DEADPOOL franchise (“the merc with the mouth”). But as Guy we get to see him as wide-eyed optimist, gleeful spewing positive greetings (“Don’t have a good day…have a great day!!”) even as others roll their eyes. He’s truly endearing in his over-the-top enthusiasm, and, dare I say, kinds’…sweet. His sincere charms make his Guy a true, well, “dream-guy”. MG and Millie barely stand a chance. Comer, mainly known for the cult TV hit “Killing Eve” achieves film stardom. showing us her versatility with her sexy swagger as MG (something of a mix of Lara Croft and GI Joe’s Duchess) and her avenging geek angel Millie, whose world is “rocked’ by Guy. She’s also got great chemistry with Keery, also a cult TV vet on “Stranger Things”, who is given a “wake call” from her that adjusts his value system and rekindles a spark with his tech partner and pal. Speaking of pals, Howery is a hoot as Buddy, a softer riff on his previous “sidekick” role in GET OUT, who wants to support Guy, but can’t make himself go against his “programming” ( a scene of him “wavering” over joining Guy is full of pathos). And in the villain role, the Oscar-winning Waititi is a bombastic goofball as he struts about his skyscraper/castle, issuing threats while trying to look “too cool” for this business “jazz”. Even as he executes several terrific bits of slapstick (his attempt to leap upright from a prone position is priceless), he’s still a big obstacle for the heroes in and outside the game.
Director Shawn Levy, following up on his hit NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM trilogy, proves again that he’s a master of mixing witty comedy with state-of-the-art CGI effects. His Free City is a magical marvel as it mocks gaming cliches and big noisy action blockbusters. Everything there, at least during the day, is bright, crisp, and shiny while the world of Millie and her cohorts can be grimy and messy, especially morally. Happily, Levy doesn’t neglect the humanity of this modern fable, thanks in large part to the clever, cutting screenplay from Matt Lieberman and Zak Penn. They’ve blended the zippy fun of the gaming world we’ve previously seen in READY PLAYER ONE (which Penn worked on), the WRECK-IT-RALPH series, even the TRON flicks, with the moral questing of DEMON SEED (a tiny bit), A-I ARTIFICAL INTELLIGENCE and especially HER to create a high-tech “rom-com”. Yes, as with most modern comedies, there’s a bit of a “lull” after about an hour, and some virtual gags get overused (another collapsing bridge), but the finale is a big bouncy pop culture celebration, with iconic imagery and a treasure trove of unexpected cameos (I’m not a-spoilin’). And a reminder to back away from the “screen” and engage in the world is always a needed lesson. But that’s after enjoying the big screen (the visuals are so rich that a theater viewing is needed if possible) adventures of a truly FREE GUY. Game on!

Fox Animation has secured the motion pictures rights to the iconic Mr. Men Little Miss characters.
Shawn Levy –the producer and director of the blockbuster family franchise NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM, among others – will produce through his Fox-based 21 Laps Entertainment. There is no director or writer yet attached to the project. Fox Animation Production VP Ralph Millero is overseeing Mr. Men Little Miss for the studio. Will Rack and Emily Morris are overseeing for 21 Laps.
Commented Levy: “I loved reading these books as a kid, and now I love reading them to my own kids. Their humor, wit and uniquely specific tone make this a truly classic series. I can’t wait to help shepherd them to the big screen.”

76-year old Jane Fonda’s enhanced bosom is milked for big laughs in the new comedy THIS IS WHERE I LEAVE YOU. Hillary Altman, the matriarch of a dysfunctional middle-class New Jersey family gathered to bury her husband, is the best role Hanoi Jane has had in decades (not saying much) and she has a great time with it, wistfully recalling the circumference of her late husband’s schlong and refusing to cover up her store-bought rack despite her kid’s constant embarrassment. The rest of THIS IS WHERE I LEAVE YOU is a mixed bag and doesn’t measure up to what Fonda is doing but it has enough good moments to recommend.
Jason Bateman stars in THIS IS WHERE I LEAVE YOU as cuckolded radio producer Judd Altman. Not only does his wife (Abigail Spencer) cheat on him in the opening scenes, but does so with his boss (Dax Shepard), therefore he gets to lose both his job and his marriage before the opening credits have rolled. To make matters worse, he is then thrown together for a week with his three siblings (Tina Fey, Adam Driver, and Corey Stoll) upon the death of their father, an atheist Jew for whom the inappropriate gentile Hillary (Fonda) insists the family sit shiva (a Jewish custom of seven days of mourning) – and they do it right on the spot where they used to set up the family Christmas tree! It seems Mom had written a best-seller years earlier in which she exposed the sexual hang-ups of her kids so this week of togetherness gives them all the chance to relive the embarrassment and play out familiar family dynamics. The relationship between Judd and brother Paul (Stoll) is dominated by old resentment and awkwardness with the fact that Paul’s wife (Kathryn Hahn) is one of Judd’s former girlfriends. Judd’s married sister (an underused Fey) takes the opportunity of being home to reconnect with a brain-damaged former love (Timothy Olyphant) while steering clear of most of the family mayhem. Phillip (Driver), the baby of the family and chronic screw-up, delivers outrageous fabrications about his current occupation to anyone who asks and brings home a new girlfriend (Connie Britton) who’s much older and wiser. Mom’s infamous directness just adds more tension and humor to the situation.
THIS IS WHERE I LEAVE YOU plays like a coming-of-age story for a middle-aged man and packs in a lot of characters and situations into its 105 minutes. Screenwriter Jonathan Tropper tries to squeeze in too much from his novel, shortchanging some of the characters (especially Ms Fey who barely makes an impression). Tonally the film is all over the map, not always successful in straddling the line between comedy and drama. Jokes about Fonda’s boobs and Wendy’s toddler’s toilet training are interspersed with heavy dialog and speeches about infidelity, miscarriage, and the heartbreaking pitfalls of parenting. Every dramatic base is covered – I kept waiting for someone to come out of the closet as gay to the astonished family, and sure enough it happens right near the end. The acting is excellent across the board with the exception of Ben Schwartz, whose ridiculously broad shtick as ‘Boner’ the spastic rabbi seems piped in from a Mel Brooks comedy.
I wished I liked THIS IS WHERE I LEAVE YOU more than I did. It made me laugh but failed on an emotional level – I never got that universal feeling we all share about the ritual of going home for something like the funeral of a loved one: the dread, the constant reminders of why you left, and the comfort gained from the knowledge that there exists a “home” to which you can return. But for a late-summer time-killer THIS IS WHERE I LEAVE YOU is good enough and Jane Fonda’s geriatric jugs are indeed quite impressive.
