NEIGHBORS 2: SORORITY RISING – Review

Neighbors-2-Sorority-Rising-1-e1451505293558

College comedies are back in session this spring. Richard Linklater previously gave us baseball buds just hanging out with EVERYBODY WANTS SOME!!, and now Nicholas Stoller and Seth Rogen return with their take on avoiding higher education in lieu of high times with NEIGHBORS 2: SORORITY RISING.

Comedy sequels aren’t known for subverting stereotypes. Most are content with delivering 90 minutes of cheap laughs that play off the same theme as its precursor. And so it’s admirable that Stoller has made a progressive sequel that tackles gender issues and shines a light on a double standard in the Greek system: a sorority is not allowed to throw parties inside their house. Fraternities can but sororities can’t. Crazy, right? It almost seems unheard of that this would exist in the year 2016, but it’s true – look it up. And so, this causes three freshmen girls who become aware of the cold hard truth to start their own. Sure, you could always attend parties at fraternity houses, but as the film illustrates and is bluntly described by one of the girls, those parties tend to be “rapey.”

As you can expect, this time around Mac (Seth Rogen) and Kelly (Rose Byrne) go to war with the new sorority next door, led by Shelby (Chloë Grace Moretz), Beth (Kiersey Clemons), and Nora (Beanie Feldstein). Initially, to get Kappa Nu off the ground, they employ the help of Teddy (Zac Efron), but when the tables are turned on him, Teddy joins sides with Mac and Kelly to bring the girls down.

It’s weird to think that a film titled NEIGHBORS 2: SORORITY RISING is a feminist movie… but, it kind of is. So much, in fact, that it sort of gets lost in the idea at times. It happily shows these women be strong and funny and stand up for what they believe in, but then falls back on female stereotypes also at times. So it wants to have its cake and eat it too, as is the case in the tailgate turned heist scene (snappily edited to make even Michael Mann smile). One minute the girls are shown as smart entrepreneurs selling “pot-pies,” but then the next minute they are easily distracted by Efron performing a MAGIC MIKE-inspired dance number. Showing the women suddenly dropping their responsibilities to slobber over the sight goes a little against the film’s message, but I also don’t blame the film for reaching for a cheap laugh after all the good it’s mainly doing.

Zac Efron has the ability to make an obnoxious character in theory, come across more as a lovable loser. Sure, his abs redefine the idea of a six-pack, but it’s Efron’s natural charm that shines more. He instills enough heart in the character of Teddy to make him more than just a dimwitted bro.

What’s interesting about the three freshman girls that lead this revolution for the woman’s right to party is that they aren’t necessarily caricatures. Most films would be quick to label these girls. This is the smart one; this is the funny one; this is the party girl. NEIGHBORS 2 avoids this by just showing three normal college girls. Moretz, Clemons, and Feldstein may not have defining characters, but as a result, they feel more natural than the stereotypes that made up the fraternity in the first film.

NEIGHBORS 2 may not be as laugh out loud funny as the last one, but Stoller and his team of five writers – yes five people had a hand in this – trade in dick jokes for a message. Although the first film may have gleefully worn its “bro-ness” like a badge of honor, the sequel mercilessly pokes large holes in the world of bro culture so that the women who are usually relegated to set decoration in this world can have their fair share of the spotlight.

Watch Zac Efron Get Oiled Up In New Clip From NEIGHBORS 2: SORORITY RISING

Neighbors 2

We couldn’t start your Friday off with a dry rub. Instead, how about we get the old juices flowing, literally, by showing you a new clip from NEIGHBORS 2: SORORITY RISING where Zac Efron lathers up with a nice hunk of meat. Sign me up!

Returning stars Seth Rogen, Zac Efron and Rose Byrne are joined by Chloë Grace Moretz for NEIGHBORS 2: SORORITY RISING, the follow-up to 2014’s most popular original comedy. Nicholas Stoller again directs in a film that follows what happens when the will of parenthood goes against the bonds of sisterhood.

Now that Mac (Rogen) and Kelly Radner (Byrne) have a second baby on the way, they are ready to make the final move into adulthood: the suburbs. But just as they thought they’d reclaimed the neighborhood and were safe to sell, they learn that the new occupants next door are a sorority even more out of control than Teddy (Efron) and his brothers ever dreamed of being.

Tired of their school’s sexist, restrictive system, the unorthodox ladies of Kappa Nu have decided to start a house where they can do whatever the hell they want. When Shelby (Moretz) and her sisters, Beth (Kiersey Clemons) and Nora (Beanie Feldstein), find the perfect place just off campus, they won’t let the fact that it’s located on a quiet street stand in their way of parties as epic as the guys throw.

Forced to turn to the one ex-neighbor with the skills to bring down the new Greeks next door, the Radners—alongside best friends Jimmy (Ike Barinholtz) and Paula (Carla Gallo)—bring in charismatic Teddy as their secret weapon. If he can infiltrate the sorority and charm his way through it, the thirtysomethings will shutter the Kappas’ home. But if they think that their neighbors are going down without a fight, they have severely underestimated the power of youthful ingenuity and straight-up crazy.

NEIGHBORS 2: SORORITY RISING opens in cinemas on May 20.

Columbia Pictures’ “Sausage Party.”

On Monday, SXSW audiences had a first look at the upcoming animated film SAUSAGE PARTY. It’s a scream!

Variety’s Joe Leydon writes in his review of the “work-in-progress” movie, “Sony could have a mid-sized late-summer hit on its hands.”

The screenplay is by Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, Kyle Hunter, and Ariel Shaffir and directed by Conrad Vernon & Greg Tiernan.

Check out the NSFW (or little kids) red-band trailer below.

KUNG FU PANDA 3 – The Review

Kung-Fu-Panda-3-1

In the mostly satisfying second sequel to the charming 2008 hit, Po the panda (voice of Jack Black) returns in pursuit of food, inner peace, family reconnections, and more food. KUNG FU PANDA 3 opens with wise old turtle Master Oogway (Randall Duk Kim) attacked and defeated by centuries-old nemesis Kai (J.K. Simmons), a sword-wielding bull. Kai has crushed many martial arts legends and swiped their chi (mojo), which he keeps in jade ornaments and uses to raise his mighty zombie army. Kai turns his attention to Po, whose fate it is, he has learned, to conquer him. But Po has just reconnected with his long-lost father Li (Bryan Cranston), and finally met more of his species, including a potential love interest in the form of Mei Mei (Kate Hudson). Aware he must harness his own chi to defeat Kai, Po and his pop take refuge in a secret mountainside village where their kind have gathered after the panda extermination detailed in the previous film, to prepare for battle with Kai and his evil minions.

Much of the freshness and novelty that made the original film such a kick is lacking in KUNG FU PANDA 3, but kids who enjoyed the first two installments of Po’s saga aren’t likely to complain. It’s entertaining enough but feels too familiar and a bit overstuffed. The three new major characters are fun additions but they crowd out the screen time of the fighting team of Tigress (Angelina Jolie), Mantis (Seth Rogen), Monkey (Jackie Chan), and Crane (David Cross) as well as Po’s adoptive dad, the dumpling-cooking goose Shifu (Dustin Hoffman) who all return. Despite their obvious importance to Po’s success as a fighter, these characters are pushed too far to the background, so as not to take the spotlight away from our hero’s bonding with his father. Many of the jokes are retreads (Po’s clumsy at martial arts – but boy he sure loves to eat!), and the subplot about Po reconnecting with his long-lost dad is so simplistically sentimental that it’s more patronizing than heartening.  This new villain Kai is formidable enough but his brutish design and attitude don’t seem to fit the KUNG FU PANDA universe, looking more like he wandered in from the upcoming Warcraft movie. The quality of Dreamwork’s animation is top-notch (as expected), the 3-D effects are well-integrated instead of superfluous, and Jack Black charms the audience with enough one-liners, but it loses a couple of points for a narrative that overstretches by at least 15 minutes. Kids may love it and parents won’t be terribly bored but unlike the TOY STORY series that added real depth and heart to each sequel, KUNG FU PANDA 3 is more of the same.

THE NIGHT BEFORE (2015) – The Review

nightbefore

Good golly Miss Holly, the big bird’s not in the oven and here we’ve got the second Christmas movie exploding onto screens across the country. Yes, the stench of LOVE THE COOPERS is still wafting through the multiplex as this new holiday comedy debuts. But there’s a big difference, well several really. This new comedy definitely and defiantly earns its ‘R’ rating, this thanks in part to its main star, the new king of “stoner”, slacker comedies, Mr. Seth Rogen. After flexing his dramatic muscles in STEVE JOBS as Steve Wozniak, he’s returned to his comfort zone as part of a comedy trio this time out. He’s re-united (and it feels so good) with a former co-star, Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The two were memorable best buds in 2011’s (can it really be four years?) 50/50. And rounding out the threesome, is a survivor of the COOPERS catastrophe, Anthony Mackie (hey, he’s an Avenger!). Now this holiday doesn’t all take place on the morning of December 25th, but rather the time that many folks do their main celebrating, on THE NIGHT BEFORE.

The story begins many, many nights prior to the title. About a dozen or so years really, when twenty year old Ethan (Levitt) lost both parents in a pre-Christmas car crash. His very bestest buddies Isaac (Seth Rogen) and Chris (Anthony Mackie) made a pledge that they would always be there for Ethan every Christmas Eve. The evening of the 24th became an annual night of debauchery for the threesome. On the first night of boozing they hear of a legendary holiday party, the “Nutcracker Ball”, a colossal orgy only accessible through very-prized secret invitations. The boys vowed to acquire an invite, but every year ends in failure. Jump ahead to today, as the friends prepare for what will mostly likely be their final Eve together. Isaac is about to begin a family with his wife Betsy (Jillian Bell), actually she may give birth before this night’s over. And Chris is now a famous NFL star (thanks to some…ahem…chemical enhancement), making it tough to go on the town with the buds. Luckily, while working a temp gig, Ethan scores three NB tickets. As the fellows await the party location (at 10 PM they dial a phone number for the spot), they meet many strange characters and have several bizarre adventures during this last epic “night before”.

Of the trio, the main focus, the “plot propeller” is likable everyman Gordon-Levitt, whose Ethan is still an oddly adrift thirty-something. We get that he’s searching for something (romance, career), but just can’t zero in on it. Much as he did in the delightful, but astoundingly unseen THE WALK, Gordon-Levitt’s considerable charms endear him to us, even as his character makes some shaky choices. Plus he has a great “elf face”. Rogen has a different sort of charm, more like the hard-charging frat brother we wanted to hang out with. Isaac’s a bit more mature than many of his “man-child” roles, here best seen in his utter panic over the prospect of impending fatherhood, believing that he’ll mess up his offspring (which makes for a very funny fantasy flash-forward). He’s given permission to indulge by his wife who even presents him a box of assorted…goodies. His over-indulgence leads to Rogen’s intense “I’m still in control” wide-eyed stare that is simply hysterical. Beside having great chemistry with the guys, Rogen’s a terrific partner to the scene-stealing Bell (so wonderful in GOOSEBUMPS and 22 JUMP STREET). She adores her addled hubby, but will cut him to the quick with a look or with her acid tongue. Somebody give Bell a starring film role, now please! Mackie’s very convincing as the fame-obsessed athlete. Happily he’s allowed to use his high energy comic timing, with none of the shackles from that recent Christmas clunker present. Much like the Rogen 2013 hit THIS THE END, this movie is stuffed to the gills with familiar comedians and comic actors, but to name them would be to spoil the surprises (don’t wanna’ unwrap those gifts under the tree now). I will hint that an actor who gave two terrific dramatic performances earlier this year shines as a most magical pot dealer. Oh, and Miley Cyrus is a hoot as herself , tweaking (but not twerking) her tabloid image.

Oh, the director of 50/50, Jonathan Levine is back with Seth and JGL, too. He’s part of the script team along with Kyle Hunter, Ariel Shaffir, and Evan Goldberg (another 50/50 alumni). There’s some great jokes about holiday classics (including the original DIE HARD,yeah!), but the story really is just a lot a winter-themed set-ups and set pieces, often haphazardly strung together making the film  into a tinsel-filled AFTER HOURS. Sure, many of the gags fall flat, but the ones that score make the bumps in the pacing bearable. Just be aware of that rating, as a bit concerning switched cell phones gets really, really graphic. Like most film comedies there’s that lull and lag about the one hour mark, right before a nice pay-off that touches on the somewhat serious message of letting go and moving on. Yes, it’s hit or miss, but these three not-so-wise men will stuff your stockings with lots of laughs and a bit of heart on THE NIGHT BEFORE.

3.5 Out of 5
