Seann William Scott (AMERICAN REUNION, ROLE MODELS) has joined Jackie Chan (RUSH HOUR, THE KARATE KID) and Fan Bingbing (X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST) in Academy Award nominated director Sam Fell’s action comedy SKIPTRACE, it was announced today by Exclusive Media’s Co-Chairmen Nigel Sinclair and Guy East and Beijing based Talent International Film Co., Ltd.’s President Esmond Ren.

Set to start production on January 13, 2014, SKIPTRACE will be produced as a Sino-Foreign co-production by Exclusive Media and Talent International (北京唐德国际电影文化有限公司) (CHINESE ZODIAC 12), who will also co-finance the film. In addition to starring, Chan is a producer on SKIPTRACE.

Based on Chan’s original idea, SKIPTRACE is written by Jay Longino and co-written by THE SITTER scribes Brian Gatewood and Alessandro Tanaka, and David Posamentier and Geoff Moore (BETTER LIVING THROUGH CHEMISTRY).

The film follows Bennie Black (Jackie Chan), a Hong Kong detective who has been tracking notorious crime boss Victor Wong for over a decade.  When Bennie’s young niece Bai (Fan Bingbing) gets into trouble with Wong’s crime syndicate, Bennie must track down the only man who can help him: fast-talking American gambler Connor Watts (Seann William Scott).  Bennie races against the clock to bring Connor back to Hong Kong and the unlikely pair embark on an entertaining and perilous adventure from the snowy mountains of Mongolia to the windswept dunes of the Gobi desert.

Seann William Scott recently completed his starring role in the Courteney Cox directed independent dramedy, JUST BEFORE I GO (playing a suicidal man who goes back to visits his hometown before he presumably ends his life) opposite Olivia Thirlby, Garrett Dillahunt, and Rob Riggle.   Last year he was seen in the independent hockey feature film GOON in which he received critical reviews opposite Liev Schrieber and Jay Baruchel which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival.  He has also starred in ROLE MODELS opposite Paul Rudd and the enormously successful AMERICAN PIE comedy franchise.

David Gerson is also attached to produce. The project was brought to Exclusive Media by Dasym Investment Strategies B.V.’s (formerly Cyrte Investments) Charlie Coker, who will act as executive producer on the film along with Dasym.

Exclusive Media’s Senior Executive VP, Production, Damien Saccani is overseeing the production on behalf of the company. Alex Walton, President of International Sales and Distribution is handling international rights to the film.

“Being part of great movies such as ROLE MODELS, THE RUNDOWN and the iconic AMERICAN PIE franchise will position Seann perfectly as Jackie Chan’s co-star,” said Nigel Sinclair and Guy East.

“We are very excited to have Seann on board this project, and know that his chemistry with Jackie will make for a unique pairing that has never been seen before. Seann is well loved by our Chinese audience for his stand-out performance in the AMERICAN PIE films, as well as his good looks!” said Esmond Ren.

PARANORMAN voice actors Kodi Smit-McPhee, Anna Kendrick, Leslie Mann, Tempestt Bledsoe, Tucker Albrizzi, Jeff Garlin, Jodelle Ferland; moviemakers Sam Fell (director), Chris Butler (director/screenwriter), and Travis Knight (producer/lead animator); other guests include Aasha Davis, Amy Brenneman,   Bella Thorne, Billy Unger, Breckin Meyer, Cimorelli, Daphne Blunt, Dave Foley, Dee Rees, Dylan Riley Snyder, Emma Kenney, Ernie Hudson, Gilles Marini, Holly Marie Combs, Judd Apatow, Justine Ezarik, Katherine McNamara, Kevin Misher, Lorene Scafaria, Ming-Na, Olivia Holt, Ricki Lake, Rob Morrow, Samantha Mumba, Sanaa Hamri, Shane Acker, Sierra McCormick, Taylor Armstrong, Taylor Spreitler, Teala Dunn, Tia Carrere, Tom Sizemore, Wayne Brady and many more!

ParaNorman is set in the town of Blithe Hollow, whose locals profit from mining the town’s history as the site, 300 years ago, of a famous witch hunt. 11-year-old Norman Babcock (voiced by Kodi Smit-McPhee of Let Me In and The Road) spends much of his days appreciating the finer points of scary movies and studying ghost lore. In fact, Norman is gifted with the ability to see and speak with the dead, such as his beloved grandmother (Elaine Stritch). Most days, he prefers their company to that of his flustered father (Jeff Garlin), spacey mother (Leslie Mann), and deeply superficial older sister Courtney (Anna Kendrick). At middle school, Norman dodges bullying Alvin (Christopher Mintz-Plasse), confides in the impressionable Neil (Tucker Albrizzi), and tries to tune out his blowhard teacher Mrs. Henscher (Alex Borstein).

Norman is unexpectedly contacted by his odd uncle Prenderghast (John Goodman), who floors him with the revelation that a centuries-old witch’s curse is real and is about to come true, and that only Norman will be able to stop it from going into overdrive and harming the townspeople. Once a septet of zombies – led by The Judge (Bernard Hill) – suddenly rises from their graves, Norman finds himself caught in a wild race against time alongside Courtney, Alvin, Neil, and Neil’s musclebound older brother Mitch (Casey Affleck) as Sheriff Hooper (Tempestt Bledsoe) chases them all. Worse, the town is up in arms and taking up arms. Norman bravely summons up all that makes a hero – courage and compassion – as he finds his paranormal activities pushed to their otherworldly limits.

Focus Features’ PARANORMAN, MPAA-rated “PG,” opens August 17th

‘Demonkeeper’ Scares up a Director

demonkeeper Fox 2000 purchased the rights to ‘Demonkeeper’ even before Puffin published the book. The studio is developing a live-action feature film adaptation of Royce Buckingham’s novel ‘Demonkeeper’. Sam Fell, whose work includes the animated films ‘The Tale of Despereaux’ and ‘Flushed Away’, has been selected to direct the movie.

Story follows a Seattle teen who inherits responsibility for a house filled with demons. When the youth finally breaks free of his charges to go on a date, he returns to discover that kids have broken into the house, unleashing its most vicious demon, the Beast, Killer of Lost Children. — Variety

While this is yet another crossover movie for an animated director to take on a live-action film, it does have a good side… Laeta Kalogridis (Pathfinder) is writing the screenplay. His best work is possibly yet to come, having written ‘Shutter Island’ for Martin Scorsese and ‘Battle Angel’ for James Cameron. The story sounds cool and while it could make a neat dark movie for kids both young and old, the concern with these kinds of movies is always one of whether the studio will dumb it down and lighten it up, maintaining the false belief that kid’s can’t handle darker subject matter.
