Doris Day in LULLABY OF BROADWAY Available on Blu-ray November 23rd From Warner Archive

“He’s lost everything but his accent!”

Doris Day in LULLABY OF BROADWAY (1951) will be available on Blu-ray November 23rd from Warner Archive

Doris Day is at the top of her form in this 1951 Warner Bros. musical classic, which gave Doris a chance to not just vocalize with her usual excellence, but to also show of her impressive dancing talents. The prospect was daunting for the star, as a car accident during her youth left her with severe injuries, and she was told that she would have to put aside her dreams of becoming a dancer. Vocally talented as she was, she rose to fame as a big band singer, which eventually led to her screen stardom. When preparing for this big-budget musical’s finale to the famous title tune, the steps of the studio set towered before her like a pyramid. All Doris Day had to do was dance up and down those steps wearing a flowing gold lamé dress. “You’ve got to be out of your minds,” Day exclaimed in a voice head across the soundstage. “I can’t even walk up and down those stairs.” She danced divinely – and sang in this musical delight about a singer newly arrived in New York… and destined for Great White Way fame in the capable company of costars Gene Nelson, S.Z. Sakall, Billy De Wolfe, Gladys George, and Florence Bates. Savor the Oscar®-winning* title tune, Cole Porter’s “Just One of Those Things,” “Somebody Loves Me” and five more swell songs. C’mon along and listen to (and watch) this Lullaby of Broadway.

Bon voyage! Georgia Garrett’s singing career may not be going anywhere, but she is. She’s on a cruise, sailing under the name Mrs. Elvira Kent while the real Elvira secretly stays home to spy on her presumably philandering hubby. Meanwhile, the husband hires a spy to snoop on his supposedly voyaging wife. Doris Day makes her maiden film voyage, debuting as Georgia in a colorful bauble afloat on romantic seas. The studio surrounds the sunny overnight screen sensation with top talent: Michael Curtiz directs, the Epstein brothers provide the script, Busby Berkeley guides musical numbers, Jule Styne and Sammy Cahn create the tunes, and costars include Oscar Levant and Jack Carson. “It’s Magic,” Day sings. Yes, it is.

Doris Day dazzles in her screen debut in this Michael Curtiz directed musical comedy. Day plays a night club singer on a Caribbean cruise who gets mixed up in a series of romantic problems. Georgia Garrett (Day) pretends to be Elvira Kent (Janis Paige) in order to take Elvira’s place on an ocean cruise. Also on board is a detective (Jack Carson) whom Elvira’s husband (Don DeFore) hired to see if Elvira is cheating on him. Believing that Georgia is Elvira, the detective can’t help falling in love with her. And then Georgia’s friend Oscar (Oscar Levant) arrives, seemingly confirming Elvira’s husband’s suspicions. Painstakingly recreated from scans of each of the original Technicolor strips and recombined and buffed to a lustrous shine, Romance on the High Seas hits the deep Blu sea swabbed and ready to sail as never before in this wondrous new HD presentation. Special Features: Vintage Musical Short “Lets Sing a Song from the Movies”; Classic Bugs Bunny Cartoon “Hare Splitter”(HD); Theatrical Trailer (HD)

In CHRISTMAS IN CONNECTICUT (1945) Barbara Stanwyck stars as a magazine columnist who writes about life on her farm house when in fact she lives in a NY apartment. She must come up with a plan when she learns that her publisher and a war hero will spend Christmas with her. CHRISTMAS IN CONNECTICUT is an entertaining little screwball comedy, thanks mostly to its fine cast. In a big departure from her previous role as a femme fatale in DOUBLE INDEMNITY, Stanwyck displays a nice comedic flair. Dennis Morgan is smooth as the affable war hero while Sidney Greenstreet is well cast as the publisher. However, S.Z. Sakall steals the film as a chef trying to master the English language while speaking with an almost incomprehensible European accent. You’ll have a lot of fun seeing this on the big screen when it plays this weekend at The Hi-Pointe Theater
