Nobody 2

Sometimes the most dangerous place for a dad is a family vacation.

Bob Odenkirk returns as suburban husband, father and workaholic assassin Hutch Mansell in the new chapter to Nobody, the hit 2021 bare-knuckle action-thriller that opened at number one at the U.S. box office.

Four years after he inadvertently took on the Russian mob, Hutch remains $30 million in debt to the criminal organization and is working it off with an unending string of hits on international thugs.

Much as he likes the slam-bang action of his “job,” Hutch and his wife Becca (International Emmy nominee Connie Nielsen) find themselves overworked and drifting apart. So, they decide to take their kids (Gage Munroe, Paisley Cadorath) on a short getaway to Wild Bill’s Majestic Midway and Waterpark, the one and only place where Hutch and his brother Harry (Grammy and Emmy nominee RZA) went on a vacation as kids.

With Hutch’s dad (Emmy winner Christopher Lloyd) in tow, the family arrives in the small tourist town of Plummerville (“Plummerville is Summerville!”), eager for some fun in the sun.

But when a minor encounter with some town bullies yanks the family into the crosshairs of a corrupt theme-park operator (John Ortiz; Fast and Furious franchise, Bumblebee) and his shady sheriff (Emmy and Golden Globe nominee Colin Hanks), Hutch finds himself the focus of the most unhinged, blood-thirsty crime boss he (or anyone) has ever encountered (Emmy winning and Oscar® nominated screen icon, Sharon Stone).

Nobody 2 is an 87North/Eighty Two Films/Odenkirk Provissiero Entertainment production, directed by Timo Tjahjanto (The Night Comes for Us, The Big 4). The screenplay is by returning writer Derek Kolstad (John Wick, Die Hart) and by Aaron Rabin (Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan), from a story by Derek Kolstad, based on characters created by Derek Kolstad.

This film’s returning producers are 87North founders Kelly McCormick (Bullet Train, The Fall Guy) and David Leitch (Bullet Train, The Fall Guy); Odenkirk Provissiero Entertainment founder Marc Provissiero (No Hard Feelings, PEN15), Eighty Two Films founder Braden Aftergood (Hell or High Water, Samaritan); and Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul, Breaking Bad). The executive producer is David Hyman.

The stunt designer and coordinator is GREG REMENTER (Bullet Train, Nobody), the stunt coordinator is KYLE MCLEAN (Bullet Train, Black Adam) and the fight choreographer is KIRK JENKINS (Bullet Train, Nobody). The motorcycle driver is RICK SKENE (Nobody, The Ice Road) and the stunt rigging coordinator is NEIL ADAMS (Nobody, Violent Night).

The film’s director of photography is CALLAN GREEN ACS, NZCS (The Enforcer, The Gentlemen); the production designer is MICHAEL DINER (supervising art director Killers of the Flower Moon, art director Jurassic World: Dominion) and the costume designer is PATRICIA J. HENDERSON (Nobody, Under the Bridge). The film is edited by ELÍSABET RONALDSDÓTTIR ACE (Bullet Train, John Wick), and the music is by DOMINIC LEWIS (Bullet Train, The Fall Guy). The casting is by MARY VERNIEU CSA (Alien: Romulus, The Fall Guy) & LINSDAY GRAHAM AHANONU CSA (The Fall Guy, The Last of Us).

PROBLEMISTA – Review

In 2024, could there be sure a thing as a “hip film studio” that would attract both filmmakers and adventurous filmgoers despite the subject matter or “creatives” (actors, directors, etc.)? From the intense internet “buzz” the answer is a big yes. A century ago it was those Warner Brothers with their urban crime thrillers (before expanding into swashbucklers and tearjerkers). And there are those studios that specialize in a genre as Blumhouse does with horror and the Marvel Studios with their comics properties. Perhaps the last time a studio inspired nearly blind loyalty may have been in the early 90s with Miramax, which introduced us to, among many, Kevin Smith and Quentin Tarantino before one of the founders started the spark that became “Me Too”. Today it is A24, which grabbed the top six Oscars a year ago. Last week saw the release of LOVE LIES BLEEDING. From that quirky crime noir/love story we get this weekend’s equally quirky comic nightmare/fantasy, PROBLEMISTA.

This story, as told by narrator Isabella Rossellini, begins in the wild paradise of El Salvador where an artist named Dolores (Catalina Saavedra) builds elaborate art installations in the jungle inspired by her six-year-old son Alejandro. Over a decade and a half later, he (Julio Torres) moves to NYC to pursue his dream of designing and creating toys for the Hasbro Company (a big rival to Barbie’s Mattel). He rents a room in a run-down apartment with some other artists as he collects a mound of rejection letters from the company. Luckily Mother Dolores encourages him over the phone, but he’s got to keep and hold a steady job or he’ll be deported. Alejandro lands a gig at a cryogenics facility, making sure that the icy chambers are never unplugged. Of course, he knocks the cord out for a few seconds, which alerts his boss who promptly fires him. Luckily he then encounters Elizabeth (Tilda Swinton), the angry wife of the affected client, a “fringe” painter named Bobby (RZA) , who hires him as a personal assistant/gallery scout (to set up a venue to sell these odd portraits of eggs). Alejandro endures her manic mood swings and verbal abuse to get her to write and sign a proof of employment to satisfy the local immigration services office. And he needs the money, which is very slow in arriving. He then turns to many desperate “side hustles” (subletting his room, forcing himself to sleep on the couch in the living room/art studio), eventually answering the “siren call” of “Craigslist”, all in order to make the proper contact who will open up the golden door to toy biz superstardom.

As Alejandro, Torres has almost perfected a flat deadpan delivery that helps to amplify the often absurd situations that almost squash his creative spirit. And yet there’s a bit of the con artist inside him as he tries to bluff his way into the “fancy-schmancy” art circles of the Big Apple. We also get a bit of his tender naive spirit, especially in those hasty (running out of minutes) calls to his “Madre”. Torres is often the “straight man” to the film’s real “scene stealer” Swinton as the loopy “force of nature”, the scatter-brained (her hubby dubbed her the “Hydra”) Elizabeth. She’s almost a second mother figure to Alejandro, though she’s almost impossible to read or predict. But Swinton is also “fierce” as Elizabeth protects the legacy of her beloved Bobby while having an obsessive devotion to the prickly software of “File Maker Pro”. This is another inspired eccentric in Swinton’s ever-expanding resume of roles. In the flashbacks, RZA is the coolest of all creators as the “egg-cellent” Bobby. Saavedra is a warm and supportive mama while Larry Owens is the slithering and seductive embodiment of the opportunity beacon of Craigslist. And there’s a terrific cameo by an A24 actress who was superb in last year’s PAST LIVES, the gifted Greta Lee.

I didn’t mention that Torres is also the writer and director (his first feature) of the film. His tenure on Saturday Night Live and other “sketch shows” comes through in several very clever sequences, from the demonstrations of his weird toy prototypes to a sword & sorcery riff when the “hydra” encounters a bank officer slavishly defending an outrageous overdraft policy (look for an update on it at the end of the credits list). Plus Torres has an eye for excellent locations that showcase some striking visuals, particularly as a transport car that hovers over the skyscrapers. And there are some clever slapstick antics as Alejandro evokes the classic silent clowns (he just needed Buster’s flat hat) as he lugs Bobby’s big paintings all over the town and up countless flights of stairs. Alas, the film doesn’t quite equal the “sum of its parts” as the constant “panic vibe” becomes exhausting as the tale suddenly takes a few very dark and dangerous turns (a stint as a “private housecleaner” is much too creepy). Luckily a charming and witty “flash forward’ ends it all on somewhat of a “high note”, but we’re still left with the feeling that the film might have worked better as a series of SNL sketches or even a streaming one-hour comedy showcase. Still, it will be interesting to see where the career of Torres progresses from the uneven PROBLEMISTA.

They’re Back! Watch The New MINIONS: THE RISE OF GRU Trailer And See It In IMAX On July 1

MINIONS: THE RISE OF GRU

This summer, from the biggest global animated franchise in history, comes the origin story of how the world’s greatest supervillain first met his iconic Minions, forged cinema’s most despicable crew and faced off against the most unstoppable criminal force ever assembled in MINIONS: THE RISE OF GRU.

Opening on July 1, check out the brand new trailer and see it in IMAX https://www.imax.com/movies/minions-rise-gru

Long before he becomes the master of evil, Gru (Oscar® nominee Steve Carell) is just a 12-year-old boy in 1970s suburbia, plotting to take over the world from his basement.

It’s not going particularly well. When Gru crosses paths with the Minions, including Kevin, Stuart, Bob, and Otto—a new Minion sporting braces and a desperate need to please—this unexpected family joins forces. Together, they build their first lair, design their first weapons, and strive to execute their first missions.

When the infamous supervillain supergroup, the Vicious 6, oust their leader—legendary martial arts fighter Wild Knuckles (Oscar® winner Alan Arkin)— Gru, their most devoted fanboy, interviews to become their newest member. The Vicious 6 is not impressed by the diminutive, wannabe villain, but then Gru outsmarts (and enrages) them, and he suddenly finds himself the mortal enemy of the apex of evil. With Gru on the run, the Minions attempt to master the art of kung fu to help save him, and Gru discovers that even bad guys need a little help from their friends.

The Vicious 6 —(from lower left) Jean Clawed (Jean-Claude Van Damme), Svengeance (Dolph Lundgren), Belle Bottom (Taraji P. Henson), Stronghold (Danny Trejo), Nunchuck (Lucy Lawless)—address the Minions (foreground, backs to camera) in Illumination’s Minions: The Rise of Gru, directed by Kyle Balda.

Featuring more spectacular action than any film in Illumination history and packed with the franchise’s signature subversive humor, Minions: The Rise of Gru stars a thrilling new cast, including, the Vicious 6: Taraji P. Henson as cool and confident leader Belle Bottom, whose chain belt doubles as a lethal disco-ball mace; Jean-Claude Van Damme as the nihilistic Jean Clawed, who’s armed (literally) with a giant robotic claw; Lucy Lawless as Nunchuck, whose traditional nun’s habit hides her deadly nun-chucks; Dolph Lundgren as Swedish roller-skate champion Svengeance, who dispenses his enemies with spin kicks from his spiked skates; and Danny Trejo as Stronghold, whose giant iron hands are both a menace to others and a burden to him.

The film also stars Russell Brand as Young Dr. Nefario, an aspiring mad scientist, Michelle Yeoh as Master Chow, an acupuncturist with mad kung fu skills, and Oscar® winner Julie Andrews as Gru’s maddeningly self-absorbed mom.

(from left) Kevin, Gru (Steve Carell) and Stuart in Illumination’s Minions: The Rise of Gru, directed by Kyle Balda.

Steered by the franchise’s original creators, Minions: The Rise of Gru is produced by visionary Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri and his longtime collaborators Janet Healy and Chris Renaud. The film is directed by returning franchise filmmaker Kyle Balda (Despicable Me 3, Minions), co-directed by Brad Ableson (The Simpsons) and Jonathan del Val (The Secret Life of Pets films), and features the iconic voice of Pierre Coffin as the Minions and a killer ’70s soundtrack courtesy of legendary Grammy-winning music producer Jack Antonoff.

THE DEAD DON’T DIE – Review

Jim Jarmusch lets us know right off the bat that THE DEAD DON’T DIE, his take on the zombie genre is not to be taken seriously. It plays the film’s irreverent title song (by Sturgill Simpson) over the opening credits. Minutes later the song is playing in the squad car of Police Chief Cliff Robertson (Bill Murray), prompting him to wonder why it sounds so familiar. “It’s the film’s theme song,” his deputy Ronnie Peterson (Adam Driver) matter-of-factly replies, in the first of several meta moments (mostly delivered by Driver) that include references to the script and “Jim”, the director. There have been zombie comedies before, but Jarmusch puts the ‘dead’ in ‘deadpan’ with THE DEAD DON’T DIE, a quirky zombie parody featuring what’s justifiably been billed as ‘the greatest cast ever assembled for a zombie film’: Bill Murray, Adam Driver, Tilda Swinton, Chloë Sevigny, Steve Buscemi, Danny Glover, Caleb Landry Jones, Rosie Perez, Iggy Pop, Sara Driver, RZA, Selena Gomez, Carol Kane, Austin Butler, Luka Sabbat and Tom Waits.

In an environmental twist to the zombie legend, it seems the Earth has spun off its axis by something called “polar fracking” causing the dead to spring to life in the one-stoplight town of Centerville, PA and go on the hunt for blood, brains, coffee, wi-fi, chardonnay, and cable TV, things they desired during their living days. THE DEAD DON’T DIE should be enjoyed by everyone who loves Jarmush’s particular low-key style of comedy, but it probably won’t win many converts. Jarmush’s self-conscious, often silly script and absurdist tone makes it hard to fully indulge in its horrific elements, but as director he shows a surprising eye for foggy graveyard atmosphere. Even if the laughs are muted, the cast makes it worthwhile. Highlights include Tom Waits as a woods-dwelling recluse, Steve Buscemi as a racist blowhard who sports a “Make America White Again” hat, and Chloë Sevigny as the only cop on the small force who seems concerned that the citizenry are dining on each other. Tilda Swinton spoofs the sword-wielding philosophical oracle shtick she’s been doing in films lately. She’s terrific, but the heart of THE DEAD DON’T DIE is the dialog between Murray and Driver. “This isn’t going to end well”  the deputy repeats, in a running joke with a big pay-off. THE DEAD DON’T DIE meanders in its second half, and eventually runs out of steam but its still recommended.
