THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE – Review

legobatman

When it comes to movie concepts, this flick may have the oddest, most tangled roots of all. But somehow things just snapped together (excuse the pun). Three years ago the movie world was stunned when a little kids’ flick, starring a beloved toy, became a box office (ahem) blockbuster! That may be because the WB folks thought outside the (toy) box and enlisted film makers and writers who brought something totally unexpected to the project: satire. Oh, and parody, and a big dose of zany anarchy. It was inevitable that THE LEGO MOVIE would spawn a sequel. But this is more of a spin-off. That earlier flick focused on the journey of everyman Emmet Brickowski and the folks he encountered. Since the Lego company makes themed toys around classic licenced characters, Emmet and his pals teamed up with Batman, whose gravelly voice was supplied by the great comic actor Will Arnett. Though a “super-friend”, Arnett’s Batman stole a Batboat full of scenes. And so, while we wait for Ben Affleck to don that suit, let’s spend some time with a “not quite so” dark knight in THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE.

After a very funny opening title sequence (shades of DEADPOOL), we’re taken to the candy-colored big block streets of Lego Gotham City. The Joker (voiced by Zach Galifianakis) has enlisted almost all the residents of Arkham Asylum to grab an airliner full of explosives. Where’s the city’s hero?! Why right on top of things, as Batman (Arnett) easily thwarts this plot (after telling a heartbroken Joker that he’s not his main enemy). Joker slithers away as Batman returns to the Batcave for some microwaved lobster thermadore. While channel surfing he stumbles across a news interview with Superman (Channing Tatum) who explains how he banished his arch foe General Zod to the Phantom Zone via a special projector. Of course Batman is not impressed. But life goes on , as Bruce Wayne visits a local orphanage the next day and encounters one very excited, kinda’ nerdy lad, Dick Grayson (Michael Cera). That evening, Bruce attends a retirement party for police commissioner James Gordon (Hector Elizondo). His successor is announced, his daughter Barbara (Rosario Dawson). Bruce is disgusted when she says that her main goal is for the police force is to form a close partnership with Batman. The festivities come to a halt when the Joker and his gang arrive. But he surrenders without a fight. Bruce is livid. Returning to the Batcave, where Alfred (Ralph Fiennes) reminds him that he has adopted Grayson, Batman hatches a plan: he’ll steals Superman’s projector and send the Joker to the Phantom Zone. Unfortunately the clown prince of crime ends up sending hordes of pop culture monsters and menaces to Earth. Now Batman faces his greatest challenge: accepting help from others and becoming a team player.

The vocal dream team seems to be having a real blast (the feeling’s contagious). All appear to be following the lead of the, well, film’s lead. Arnett’s got that all too somber growl down perfectly which makes his absurd boasting riffs (bragging about his 9 pack) and opening battle rap musical number real comic highlights. But he’s not afraid to show us the vulnerable side as Batman finally must ask for help, all while battling that out-of-control ego. And he’s got a great rapport with his co-stars. Cera’s bumbling, hyper-excited Robin is a perfect complement to his grimacing mentor. That goofy youngster delights in living out his dreams, ignoring that garish uniform (“it doesn’t blend in anywhere!”). Bruce’s mentor (kind of an uncle, I suppose) is Fiennes as the dry, acerbic Alfred (very close to John Gielgud in ARTHUR). He’s the scolding voice of reason, the only person who can put Bruce in his place (though he’s often too stubborn to listen). Galifianakis expands on the notion of the Joker as Batman’s mirror image, but twists that with a bit of the jilted or spurned suitor (he dies a bit when Batman says he likes to “fight around”). His own partner, Harley Quinn, is voiced with naughty girl relish by the great Jenny Slate. The whole “bad guy gang” boasts a roster of terrific comic talent (special kudos for Two Face). Rounding out the cast are two superb actresses who give the caped crusader a great assist. Dawson ‘s a quite tough, but tender Babs AKA Batgirl, while Ellie Kemper endows a rainbow-colored brick with loads of personality.

TV vet Chris Mckay (“Moral Orel” and “Robot Chicken”) makes spectacular use of his big screen canvas. Every frame is chock full of bits of whimsy and wonder (lots to see when you hit the pause button on the disc). The big problem is that second half lull, which seems like a let-down after the manic barrage of gags and slapstick in the movie’s first half hour (no way they could keep up that pace). Perhaps the disjointed nature is the result of far too many cooks (five screenwriters) trying add too much spice. But the jokes that land really hit hard, delivering big laughs. The best gags may be those centering around our collective nostalgia for the main character. Loving jabs at all the incarnations of Batman jump out, from the comic books to TV to animation, and, of course, the big blockbusters. If we haven’t  “Made America Great Again”,  at least they’ve “Made Batman Fun Again”. It’s a nice break before that “gloomy Gus” is back with the JUSTICE LEAGUE. Like that 2014 flick, this is a wry satire that’s truly perfect for the whole family. THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE is “dada-dada-dada-dada-delightful”.

Principal photography is underway on Warner Bros. Pictures’ dramatic thriller UNFORGETTABLE, which is the first film in the director’s chair for veteran producer Denise Di Novi (“Crazy, Stupid, Love,” “Focus”).

Katherine Heigl (KNOCKED UP, 27 DRESSES) and Rosario Dawson (SIN CITY films, Netflix’s DAREDEVIL series) star in the film. UNFORGETTABLE marks a reunion for Heigl and Di Novi, who previously collaborated on “Life as We Know It.”

Heigl stars as Tessa Connover, who is barely coping with the end of her marriage when her ex-husband, David (Stults), becomes happily engaged to Julia Banks (Dawson) – not only bringing Julia into the home they once shared but also into the life of their daughter, Lilly (Isabella Rice).  Trying to settle into her new role as a wife and a stepmother, Julia believes she has finally met the man of her dreams, the man who can help her put her own troubled past behind her. But Tessa’s jealousy soon takes a pathological turn until she will stop at nothing to turn Julia’s dream into her ultimate nightmare.

The main cast also includes Geoff Stults (TV’s “Zoo”), young actress Isabella Rice (“True Blood”), Simon Kassianides (TV’s “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”), Whitney Cummings (“The Wedding Ringer”), Robert Wisdom (TV’s “Chicago PD”) and film and television star Cheryl Ladd.

The film is being produced by Di Novi, Alison Greenspan (“If I Stay”) and Ravi D. Mehta (“Grudge Match”), from a screenplay by Christina Hodson.

The behind the scenes creative team is led by multiple Oscar-nominated director of photography Caleb Deschanel (“The Right Stuff,” “The Natural”), production designer Nelson Coates (“Flight”), editor Frédéric Thoraval (“Taken”), and costume designer Marian Toy (HBO’s “Ballers”).

UNFORGETTABLE will be lensed in and around the Los Angeles area and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.

TOP FIVE – The Review

TopFive

When a big milestone approaches it’s common for most of us to look back and reflect on our lives and career. With the big 5-0 looming, Chris Rock, one of the smartest and funniest stand-up comedians, has done just that with TOP FIVE (not a reference to the B-day, but a quick listing of favorite music artists used as an ‘ice breaker’, like “Where’d you go to school?” here in St. Louis). Oh, and this is the third feature film he’s directed (he wrote this one, too). Mr. Rock has been part of the national comedy scene for nearly 25 years since he was one of the cast members of TV’s “Saturday Night Live”, with a few movie bit roles under his belt (BEVERLY HILLS COP 2). He’s gone from cocky kid with a mike to screen veteran, so  now what does he want to say about the nature of celebrity and show biz? Will this project eventually be part of his own movie top five?

Rock plays comedy superstar Andre Allen, and, on this very long day, his life and career are at a crossroads. He’s taking a big risk professionally with his first foray into movie drama playing the leader of a Haitian slave revolt in the 1800’s. Andre has been playing it “safe” for the last few years by starring in a series of ‘low-brow’ action cop comedies as “Hammy the Bear” (he’s cracking wise inside a fur suit while blasting away the bad guys). Now he wants to be taken seriously, which isn’t aided by his personal life. He’s to be married later this weekend to fame-seeking reality TV star Erica Long (Gabrielle Union)) with the ceremony taped as part of her basic cable show. If all that weren’t enough, his agents have arranged for Times staffer Chelsea Brown (Rosario Dawson) to interview him while doing last-minute press for the new film (and the anonymous reviewer for her paper seems to delight in slamming his movies). They visit Andre’s old neighborhood, sit in on countless morning radio interviews, and join the film’s cast for the marathon press junket. As the day progresses star and profiler bond over their struggle to maintain sobriety (each has a prized program chip) and clash as her questions get more pointed and personal. Can Andre make it through the pressures of the day without giving into his inner demons and the intense attraction to his inquisitor?

Despite pulling triple duty, Rock seems more comfortable in his performance here than in most of his recent film work (not counting his membership in Adam Sandler’s rep company). Still, occasionally he’ll slide into stand-up mode, doing a riff rather than conversing. Fortunately by the mid-point he’s connecting with his fellow actors, going for the truth in the scene rather than the laugh, although the incident that ignites a meltdown rings hollow. It helps that his big moments usually occur with the luminous, energetic Dawson, who brings a real intelligence along with her stunning presence. Her character is not going to be distracted by Allen’s considerable charm and wit. But it’s another beauty that delivers one of the film’s best dramatic moments. Union shows the vulnerable human being beneath the reality TV diva caricature. It’s a shame we don’t get more of her interacting with Allen beside the random phone calls. The movie’s peppered with several comic stars who barely get a chance to showcase their talents. The great JB Smoove (a fine foil on “Curb Your Enthusiasm”) is regulated to being Allen’s motor-mouthed (speaking of fast-talkers, the over-exposed Kevin Hart has a brief cameo as Allen’s frenetic agent) security/aide while making inept passes at every voluptuous female in sight (original!). He comes off better than Cedric the Entertainer as the vile, voracious hustler that scares Allen straight (off booze and drugs). He’s the Tasmanian Devil of lust and over-indulgence. Faring perhaps worse is the talented Anders Holm (of TV’s “Workaholics” and “The Mindy Project”) as Chelsea’s beau who becomes the punchline of a gross, humiliating prank. Past (Tracy Morgan) and current (Michael Che, Leslie Jones, and Jay Pharoah) SNL players are giving little to do (blink and you’ll miss Jay), while they and other actors appear in tired “look in the camera” confessionals. Several comedy icons show up as themselves in the final act’s party scene, all to few laughs and minimal impact.

So basically, this is Rock in full Woody Allen mode, particularly the WA of ANNIE HALL,MANHATTAN, and STARDUST MEMORIES, ready to tackle the way people view his work and life. It’s a shame that so many subplots fall into movie clichés and ring false. What media outlets have unknown, anonymous film critics? Food and restaurant critics, sure, but c’mon? And several sequences with the general public seem like tired riffs on more inspired bits from THE KING OF COMEDY. Often it seems like a celeb version of TV’s “24” or TRAINING DAY with so much stuffed into that Friday (who does a junket on the day of a film’s release?). Plus those “Hammy” clips! Are we to believe that a studio would hide a big star’s face behind an immovable rubber bear mask? There’s such a terrifically talented cast assembled here, that it’s a shame the end result often feels lethargic, trite and often laugh-free. Perhaps before his next milestone Rock will have a more compelling commentary, since this is a long, long way from my TOP FIVE.

Chris Rock’s Toronto Favorite TOP FIVE To Be Distributed By Paramount Pictures

top five

Paramount Pictures announced it will distribute writer / director Chris Rock’s TOP FIVE worldwide. The news comes as the film from producer Scott Rudin, and his IACF partner Barry Diller, earned rave reviews at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival.

“Chris and I go back decades, both personally and professionally, and so I am particularly proud to have watched his career grow to its highest heights over many decades. This film showcases brilliantly how talented Chris is as a filmmaker and storyteller and we are thrilled to be partnering with him, Scott Rudin and my longtime friend, the legendary Barry Diller and IACF for its worldwide launch,” said Brad Grey, Chairman and CEO of Paramount Pictures.

Written, directed by, and starring Chris Rock, TOP FIVE tells the story of New York City comedian-turned-film star Andre Allen, whose unexpected encounter with a journalist (Rosario Dawson) forces him to confront the comedy career—and the past—that he’s left behind.

Starring Chris Rock, Rosario Dawson, Kevin Hart, Tracy Morgan, Cedric The Entertainer, J.B. Smoove, Sherri Shepherd, Anders Holm, Romany Malco, Leslie Jones, Michael Che, and Jay Pharoah. The film is produced by Scott Rudin and Eli Bush. The Co-Producers are Shawn “Jay Z” Carter and Kanye West; the Executive Music Producer is Questlove. Barry Diller and Scott Rudin’s IACF financed the film.

UTA negotiated the deal on behalf of the IACF and the filmmakers. The studio’s negotiating team was lead by Paramount’s SVP of Acquisition and Production Eben Davidson and Rona Cosgrove, EVP of Business Affairs.

Top critics have said about TOP FIVE:

“Chris Rock’s third turn in the directing chair proves the proverbial charm in this smart, ferociously funny Hollywood-insider romp… it’s also a candid, fresh, ferociously funny snapshot of life in the celebrity bubble. Rock has finally found a big-screen vehicle for himself that comes close to capturing the electric wit, shrewd social observations and deeply autobiographical vein of his standup comedy,” said VARIETY’s Scott Foundas

“Chris Rock brings it big time in this uproarious celebrity self-portrait….piling on one hilarious sequence after another in a barrage of hard-hitting humor that has rarely been so successfully dished out in a single film. It’s like watching a first-rate standup routine transformed into fiction, or in this case auto-fiction, as Rock has more on his mind than just making us laugh, offering up a witty celebrity satire that doubles as a love story set during one long and eventful New York City day,” said THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER’s Jordan Mintzer

“Rock has hit a career high with his new film TOP FIVE….Hilarious situations continue to top themselves as the film progresses. Just when you think the surprises are over, another famous face and comedy icon appears…. Rock may know the ins and outs of American stand-up better than any of his peers because he uses that knowledge masterfully in casting this picture. But TOP FIVE transcends its genre…. It’s a movie about the current state of race relations. It’s a movie about honesty and forgiveness. It’s another searing indictment of the world of celebrity. It’s even a movie about the lasting legacy of hip-hop. And it all combines to smash you silly and leave you breathlessly wanting more,“ said HITFIX’s Greg Ellwood

“Chris Rock is at his rude, ribald and raucous best in the laugh-out-loud TOP FIVE, a deliriously funny film that looks destined to be a box office hit. Written, directed and starting Rock, the film mines similar territory to Woody Allen at his younger best – sex, comedy, paranoia, insecurity and more sex – but with a much rawer and uncensored edge,” said SCREEN INTERNATIONAL’s Mark Adams
