SLIFF 2017 Review – MUNE: GUARDIAN OF THE MOON

MUNE: GUARDIAN OF THE MOON screens Saturday, Nov. 11 at 11:00am at The Missouri History Museum (5700 Lindell Boulevard) as part of this year’s St. Louis International Film Festival. This is a FREE screening.

As legend has it, the first Guardian of the Sun threw a harpoon into the cosmos and roped the sun to bring light and warmth to all of humanity. Then the Guardian of the Moon lured the moon to the Land of Darkness to provide a balance to the sun and supply the world with dreams. At a momentous ceremony to appoint the two new guardians, an accident seems to occur: The heir apparent is passed over, and the title Guardian of the Moon is bestowed on the waif-like Mune, a small and frightened forest faun who seems wholly unprepared to take on such a weighty responsibility. This news excites Necross, the nefarious ruler of the Underworld, a corrupted ex-guardian who decides to take advantage of Mune’s weakness and steal back the sun for himself. Now it is up to unlikely hero Mune and his friend Glim — a headstrong young girl with wax for skin — to save the sun and restore order to the world. A breathtaking new adventure from the producers of “The Little Prince,” “Mune” features a star-studded voice cast that includes Patton Oswalt, Rob Lowe, Christian Slater, and Ed Helms.

Review of MUNE: GUARDIAN OF THE MOON by Cary Paller:

MUNE: GUARDIAN OF THE MOON is the story of  an unlikely hero coming of age to save the world.  The hardest part about almost every studio that makes an animated feature, outside of Walt Disney Studios, has to deal with is the story.  Almost all the of them lack in that area.  Most come off and feel like B movie level material instead of pushing the story to something feels original and has depth.  Mune, kind of falls in the middle of it all.  The Animation switched from good computer CGI to rough edgy hand drawn looking style. Which gave the film an interesting feel to it.  The style kept changing as part of the plot at the just right moments when the story seemed to lack.  Now for the story, it really was the weak link.  The characters all seemed to be carbon copies of all the great Walt Disney characters.  I cannot say it made the film bad, but it kept the film from becoming any better than a direct-to-video Walt Disney spin off.  It is really a shame that so many production companies spend so much time on the Animation and so little time making sure the screen better than average.  For all the flaws in the film it still will be an enjoyable experience for the younger crowd.  There are so many sequences  filled with great visuals and some fun, silly dialog along with the usual banter between the hero’s and villain’s.  I am glad I saw it.  It is very hard work making  an animated feature.  Go see the film, support the filmmakers and enjoy the final product in the theater where it should be seen.

MONSTER TRUCKS – Review

monstertrucks

Even though its several months till the temps rise to signal the start of blockbuster kid-friendly entertainment time, the multiplex chefs are ready to whip up something that will satisfy the appetites of the pre-teen crowds. Here’s a tasty mash-up, much in the vein of other blended concoctions. Several years ago some far-sighted studio marketing exec thought, “Hey, kids love their doggies and they love sports, so how about a pooch that plays basketball?”. AIR BUD proved to be quite the franchise, so this new flick should be another “slam dunk”. The tots love their weird creatures (as long as they’re not too scary) and they adore those big-wheeled behemoths that flattened everything in their path. Have some animation veterans sprinkle a bit of magic and slapstick, and you’ve got a candy coated respite from those somber award season contenders. Clear the way for the MONSTER TRUCKS.

This turbocharged tale begins on a quiet late evening as scientist Jim Dowd (Thomas Lennon) drives onto a South Dakota oil drilling site. He darts from his pickup and enters the operation’s command center where he reports to his boss, oil company head honcho Reece Tenneson (Rob Lowe). Seems a huge underground lake exists just above a massive deposit of crude. Now they can’t drill through if there’s any wildlife in that lake. Dowd looks at the video footage, and ,being a good company man, states that nothing’s down there (the glowering light in the water are just reflections of the drill). And so, the work commences until an eruption occurs. It’s water and something else, namely some bizarre creatures. Two of them are captured as Dowd’s truck is nearly crushed in the chaos. It’s towed to the local junk yard owned by Mr. Weathers (Danny Glover) and watched over by his “night man”, high-schooler Tripp Coley (Lucas Till). He’s having a tough time at home. His divorced mom (Amy Ryan) works long shifts at the diner, and Tripp can’t stand her boyfriend Sheriff Rick (Barry Pepper), who dotes on his police vehicle. Tripp dreams of his own big truck as the local rich boys taunt him with their flashy wheels. And he’s having a tough time in school, though he tries to ignore the brainy classmate Meredith (Jane Levy), who is his science tutor. After they drop off the truck, Tripp hears some strange noises. It turns out a third creature, a shiny tentacled, amphibious “beastie” he names “Creech”, was hiding in the truck. Seems that it loves to drink oil and rest inside Tripp’s truck that’s awaiting a motor. With some modifications, Tripp makes the truck into a home for Creech, and finds a way to get it to propel the truck via levers and pulleys. Unfortunately Tenneson looks at the accident  video footage and sees that a third monster escaped. He sends his hired “muscle” Burke (Holt McCallany) out to retrieve the beast at any cost. Soon Tripp and Meredith are on the run with Creech from Burke’s crew as they rush back to the drill site to reunite the creatures and stop Tenneson from poisoning their underground home.

Luckily this “off the wall” plot is made surprisingly palatable by this energetic cast. Tripp, who we’ve seen on the big screen as Havoc in the last couple of X-Men flicks and very recently on the small screen as the new “MacGyver”, is very charming as the good-natured gear head, an auto-obsessed toddler in a teen’s body (there’s a long scene of him behind the wheel making motor-noises with his mouth like a youngster playing with his toy race cars. Levy takes a break from her terrific work in the horror genre (the EVIL DEAD reboot and last Summer’s nail-biter DON’T BREATHE) to test her comedic skills (honed during her stint on TV’s “Suburgatory”) as the smitten Meredith, the “geek girl” reduced to swooning puppy (we just want him to notice her, dude!). Well into her 20’s, Levy is more than ready for some grown-up roles. Lennon is endearing as the “brainiac” who finally decides to do the right thing (his repressed panic has echoes of the master, Don Knotts). Lowe effortlessly return to the slimy villain roles that were his 80’s and 90’s staple prior to his recent TV eccentrics (“The Grinder”). McCallany is quite menacing as the single-minded, heartless thug. Glover and Ryan are given little to do (she’s gone after the ten-minute mark, unlike her similar role in GOOSEBUMPS), but Pepper does a nice job as the uptight hot head who sees the error of his ways. And Frank Whaley has a nice seen as Tripp’s pop, a guy who’s not as great as his son remembers.

Animation wizard Chris Wedge (ICE AGE) slips easily into (mostly) live action, making a fairly watchable film out of something that could’ve been just another merchandising “cash grab”. He gets some nice subtle work from the cast while delivering the kind of action that will have the tots bouncing in their seats (guess I’m showing my age, but I cringed at the countless property damage as I mentally calculated the losses to those who just happened to be in the way). The script (credited to four writers) at times, leans too heavily on the “bestest pals” themes of E.T., FREE WILLY, and (“gasp”) MAC AND ME, while its ecology subplot often make little sense (lots of oil and gas-guzzlin’ in order to save the endangered creatures). Speaking of the living truck motors, Creech only shows his teeth once or twice (might make the lil’ ones jumps a bit), but for the most part, he and his kin are cuddly cousins to HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON’s Toothless ( with his shiny-smooth head, spaced-apart eyes, and writhing tentacles I was thinking “Flipper-Cthulhu”). As far “kiddie flicks” go, this is quite bearable. The youngsters will been enthralled by the title creations, while the older folks can enjoy the comic talents of Lennon and the charms of Till and Levy. They provide the sparks that help those MONSTER TRUCKS go the distance (your mileage may vary).

SEX TAPE – The Review

sextape

We’re just past the Summer mid-point and the tide of rated R for “raunchy” feature films rolls on. So far, we’ve gotten a visit from Melissa McCarthy with TAMMY and Seth McFarlane starring in (not just his voice like TED) A MILLION WAYS TO DIE IN THE WEST. We started early in May with the team captain of the Apatow squad, Seth Rogan in the hit NEIGHBORS. And we’ve even had a sequel with the return of Joanh and Channing in 22 JUMP STREET. This new flick is unique, because it’s more of a reunion than sequel. Three years ago director Jake Kasdan (ORANGE COUNTY) teamed with Jason Segal (another member of the Apatow frat) and Cameron Diaz (co-star of that milestone of “R” comedy hits, THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY)  for the box office hit BAD TEACHER. Now there’s a sequel in the works for that and it inspired a short-lived TV series earlier this year (much toned down, of course). Now the trio’s back together for the very different, but still very adult, SEX TAPE.  Can the flick live up to that oh-so naughty title? Let’s pop it in and press play…

As the film begins, Annie (Diaz) is typing away at the hit “mommy-centered” blog that she created, wistfully remembering those college days of constant love-making with Jay (Segal). But it seems that once they settled down, married, and started a family things have cooled off considerably in the boudoir. They still love each other, but they can’t quite co-ordinate things. During a typical hectic morning, they try to get their two kids ready for school. Jay will drop them off on the way to his dream job at a big radio station (and the perks: free concerts and brand new ipads so he can give away the old ones as gifts to friends and family). Annie’s off to a meeting with the head of a big toy company, Hank (Rob Lowe), who wants to buy her blog. The meeting goes so well, that Annie decides to celebrate. When Jay gets home, a barely clothed Annie reveals that the kids are staying overnight at her parents (much to Jay’s delight). But things aren’t going as well as they hoped. Then Annie hatches a plan! After numerous shots of tequilla, they’ll recreate all the positions from their battered old copy of “The Joy of Sex”, and tape it with Jay’s new ipad. The happy and hung over  duo wake up the next morning and plan their son’s fourth grade graduation party. After the party, disaster strikes. Jay gets a text from an unknown number thanking him for the sex video. The shock continues as Jay realizes that his ipad shared the file with all the old ipads he gave out as gifts. He and Annie spend most of the night frantically tracking down the ipads in order to save their reputations and prevent the blog deal from being squelched. And who sent that text?!

Diaz once again displays her exceptional comedic skills. She can handle a pratfall with ease and switch gears almost immediately to go into full blonde bombshell mode. Adding to her repertoire in this outing is her slow angry burn that smolders into full exasperation. Diaz has a most comfortable chemistry with Segal who excels at slapstick especially in a manic chase with an angry dog. He’s ecstatic when he believes that he’s alluded the snarling beast, but quickly changes to panic as the pup reveals another skill (he may be part feline since he seems to have nine lives). Poor Jay is literally put through the ringer, with wounds that don’t heal completely in the following scene. Over all, Segal still projects a child-like quality that inspires us to root for him as he faces every challenge. Just like Lucy and Ricky had Ethel and Fred, Annie and Jay have their own best couple pals in the wonderful Ellie Kemper and Rob Corddry as long-time, bored marrieds Tess and Robby whose own marriage gets a shot of excitement from their friends’ predicament. But as terrific as the whole cast is, the movie’s MVP may be Lowe as the wealthy goofball that is very happy to expose his wild side to the shocked couple. His joyful silliness is most infectious. I’d love to see a spin-off/sequel all about this billionaire doofus.

Director Kasdan keeps the energy level high right from the start with the expert physical hijinks of the college years. We wonder if Annie and Jay fit in all their classes in between their nearly non-stop bedroom gymnastics. Later the sequence at Hank’s estate piles on the gags particularly with Hank’s odd art collection. This may be thanks to the surprisingly clever script by Kasdan, star Segal, Nicholas Stoller, and Kate Angelo. Unfortunately they seem to have the same difficulty as many other comedy writers in coming up with a strong final act. A surprise guest comedy superstar enlivens things a bit, but the film doesn’t quite know when to stop. Just as we believe the final fade-out is on the way, here comes another bit of business. But even though they have trouble making a graceful exit, there’s still plenty of great laughs and inspired performances (thanks again, Mr. Lowe!) that make SEX TAPE one of this Summer’s most consistently hilarious flicks.

When Jay (Jason Segel) and Annie (Cameron Diaz) first got together, their romantic connection was intense – but ten years and two kids later, the flame of their love needs a spark.  To kick things up a notch, they decide – why not? – to make a video of themselves trying out every position in The Joy of Sex in one marathon three-hour session.  It seems like a great idea – until they discover that their most private video is no longer private.

With their reputations on the line, they know they’re just one click away from being laid bare to the world… but as their race to reclaim their video leads to a night they’ll never forget, they’ll find that their video will expose even more than they bargained for.

Also stars Rob Corddry, Ellie Kemper and Rob Lowe.

Directed by Jake Kasdan, SEX TAPE will be released on July 25, 2014.

Synopsis:

Richard (Thomas Jane), Ron (Jeremy Piven), Jonathan (Rob Lowe) and Tim (Christian McKay) are old college friends that gather annually for a week in Big Sur to celebrate their friendship and catch-up on each other’s lives. As the week progresses, they go down the rabbit hole of excess as mountains of drugs are consumed to a blaring rock ‘n’ roll soundtrack.  Parties with much younger women spin out of control. Exhausted and run ragged, they bare their souls to one another revealing the disillusionment with their lives.  As the truth emerges, the reunion takes a much darker turn when a promise from their past is brought to light.  From director Mark Pellington, I MELT WITH YOU is a visually dazzling, wild and wooly trip deep into the male psyche, driven by four amazingly committed and profound performances.
