People’s Panties In A Bunch Over Kevin Smith’s RED STATE Distribution

It’s about to get snarky in here!

If you are a twitter fan, like I am, one person you may like to pay close attention to is Kevin Smith. Kevin Smith has changed the way he he is going about presenting his newest film RED STATE to the public, and most people are not happy about it. Smith stated that he had planned “to pick my distributor in the room – auction style” for RED STATE and the public, as well as media ran with it, saying that he was going to auction off the film. Smith kept his word.

At last night’s screening of RED STATE, and according to plan Kevin Smith stated that he sold the movie to himself for $20 and that he would be taking the film on the road. His theory behind this… older films. Films use to open in one city at a time, almost like an event rather than the widespread releases of today. He will start with Radio City Music Hall on March 5th and eventually leading the film into theaters on October 19th, which any Smith fan knows to be the anniversary of CLERKS’.

So why all the commotion? According to MOVIELINE Smith called out the movie studios as thieves and said that he would not be doing any press for the film.

Want my opinion? HE IS A GENIUS!

First off, Kevin Smith, or anyone has the rights to his or her own creative projects/creativity. If you are even the slightest it creative, you understand the attachment to your creations, and I believe that you should have the rights to do whatever you want with your work. Movie studios have the right to be upset at his statement, but that is because they are directly involved in the comment. I am not here to tell anyone how to feel. A person is going to feel whatever they feel. So, that is your own thing and this chick is going to stay out of that one,

As for all you crazy, fun-loving bloggers out there… I know you had your hearts set on getting an interview with Smith, or to get the scoop on this, but if he wants to keep this film private and doesn’t want it overly saturated in the press, then that is his prerogative. Sure, I would love to sit down with Smith and pick his brain over root beer floats (He does like root beer floats right? Oh, wait… that is a stupid question… root beer floats are delicious!) but if he wants to keep this to a few SMOGCASTS and to his twitter, that is his decision. Heck, if you really want to know what is going on FOLLOW HIM on twitter. He answers questions from fans all of the time!

Third, this man is smart! Congrats to everyone who is tweeting, blogging, facebooking, reporting, and talking to their friends hot mom about this… you have given this movie TEN TIMES MORE BUZZ than playing by the rules and participating in the standard junkets could ever do. You have now made people that have never seen a Kevin Smith movie interested in this film, whether that was your goal or not. (Applause and a high five to Smith for this one!)

The overall goal, and point of his message is simple… anyone who loves film can make a film. If you want it bad enough, you can go out there and show the world your creation regardless of studio backing. That is a pretty inspirational message to be honest.

Simply put, read both sides of the story… make up your own mind, and go after what you love. If you pour your time, effort and creativity into a project it is your decision what to do with it, and in the end… we are critics, and all boils down to nothing more than our opinion.

Kevin Smith Won’t Interview for RED STATE

There’s not much you can’t learn about filmmaker Kevin Smith by following him on twitter (@ThatKevinSmith). Smith has now announced that he will not be doing any press — short of a few promotional bits, if needed — for his new film RED STATE.

Rather than repeatedly spewing the same answers to the same monotonous questions tossed at him from one interviewer to the next, Kevin Smith gives just about every answer to every question about RED STATE in an online podcast, which can be found at smodcast.com

In Kevin Smith’s words…

“It’s INSANELY detailed, and by the time we’re done, I’ll have pre-answered all questions about RedState — thus negating the need to speak with me about it…”

He continues…

“From nearly 20 yrs experience, I know this much: folks are gonna write WHATEVER they want, whether I sit down with them or not. So I’ll just furnish all the information I’d normally serve up one at a time to a small, jaded audience that doesn’t really give a s–t unless there’s someone famous in the room, to a much larger, APPRECIATIVE audience that would actually enjoy & benefit from hearing the same information.”

Written and directed by Kevin Smith, RED STATE is a horror film in which a group of misfits encounter fundamentalism gone to the extreme in Middle America. The movie stars Melissa Leo, Kevin Pollak and John Goodman. RED STATE is currently slated for a March 2011 release date.

First RED STATE Trailer & New Posters Are Here

Kevin Smith’s fans rejoice! The first trailer for RED STATE has debuted via his Smodcast.com. You can watch it below or download it in other formats at the site. Also, check out the latest posters after the trailer. The film is slated for a March 2011 release and stars John Goodman, Kyle Gallner, Melissa Leo, Michael Parks, Kevin Pollack, Michael Angarano and Stephen Root.

Synopsis:

Ever since Clerks (cowinner of the Filmmakers Trophy at the 1994 Sundance Film Festival), Kevin Smith has been known for his sharp, subversive, comedic writing. He shifts from comedy to horror with Red State and aptly demonstrates that good writing transcends genre. Red State begins by following three horny high-school boys who come across an online ad from an older woman looking for a gang bang. Boys being boys, they hit the road to satisfy their libidinal urges. But what begins as a fantasy takes a dark turn as they come face-to-face with a terrifying “holy” force with a fatal agenda. Instead of relying on archetypes and predictable formulas, Smith meticulously fashions all-too-real characters, utilizing exceptional performances (notably by Michael Parks) and an intelligent script. His realistic style gives the film an intimate feeling, heightening the terror to biblical proportions. Red State is a shocking new kind of horror film that aggressively confronts higher powers and extreme doctrines with a vengeance.

Kevin Smith’s RED STATE Gets the Green

I talk about lots of stuff I wanna do that either happens years later or never happens at all. Happy to report RED STATE is not the latter.

This was the announcement yesterday on Kevin Smith’s Twitter account, and, to many horror fans, it was a blessing.  We’ve heard for years about Smith wanting to do a horror movie, and RED STATE was it.  Unfortunately, many obstacles began setting themselves directly in the path of the film getting off the ground.

Luckily, for fans of horror films and Kevin Smith films alike, today brings good news on the RED STATE front.

First draft was dated 9/5/07. Looks like we start shooting this July. Took nearly three years, but we’re finally gonna roll on RED.

Smith also answered a few questions throughout the day that people had regarding RED STATE, its backers, and who we may or may not be seeing make an appearance.

Here are those updates:

“RED STATE? And here I was looking to HIT SOMEBODY” Writing HIT now; shooting HIT on heels of RED STATE.

“Studio deal for RED STATE or going the full indie route?” (*Marches across big lawn, up front porch*) I’m home, Momma.

“cameo for jay & bob in #RedState ?” Be like Kermit & Fozzie cameo-ing in ORDINARY PEOPLE: just waaaaay out of place.

“is Red State going to be so-called torture porn” Nah. Tonally closer to RACE WITH THE DEVIL or DELIVERANCE.

“Are you doing Red State thanks to #copoutsuccess?” Some folks don’t wanna hear that, but yes: #CopOut got us to RED STATE.

“did Warner pony up for Red STATE?” Ah, bless… That made me chortle aloud, sir. Like asking if WB ponied up for SALO.

Me & WB get along great, with understanding that when I’m there, I’m doing their stuff. RED STATE decidedly not their kinda thing. At ALL.

No official dates on when filming begins or even a release date, but Kevin Smith confirms.  RED STATE is happening, and it is next on his plate.

Kevin Smith talks lack of funding for RED STATE

redstate

Kevin Smith has had a horror film in the pipeline for some time now, and we get updates every so often. Well right now is one of those times. He talked to MTV about the film during press for his new book. This is what he had to say:

“‘Red State’ has been tough to find f—ing money for, finding cash has been difficult. It’s not a commercial movie by any stretch of the imagination.”

“I was lobbying for a cheaper movie,” he explained. “One of the guys… who was making the flick with me was lobbying for a more expensive version of the movie. We weren’t going to find [the larger] budget in a zillion years, so I went off and made ‘A Couple of Dicks,’ came back and said ‘let’s re-concentrate our efforts.'”

“Instead of pie-in-the-sky, just down-and-dirty. I made f—ing ‘Clerks’ for crissakes. I can’t be the guy who’s like, ‘well I can’t make a movie for less than $15 million.’ I started my career that way and it’s still how I feel.”

“If money comes together for it, boom,” Smith said, snapping his fingers. “We’re ready to start moving forward. Script’s all done, crew is on board, we just have to find our cast.”

“For me, it’s just like, let’s find some cash, seeing if there’s any cash out there for the f—ing idea, then start attaching talent to it. So that’s where we are on that.”

So there you have it boys and girls, yet another update about the lack of money for this film. Kevin Smith doesnt do HUGE at the box office, but I have a feeling that a really good Kevin Smith slasher flick could do really well. At least it would make back its budget and do good business on DVD. He has a proven track record with that, so PLEASE someone step up to the plate and give him the fucking money to do it. Snap to it.
