PEE-WEE’S BIG ADVENTURE screens midnights this weekend (June 5th and 6th) at The Tivoli Theater as part of their ‘Reel Late at The Tivoli’ Midnight Series.

The first film by Paul Ruebens, Tim Burton and the incomparable film composer Danny Elfman, PEE-WEE’S BIG ADVENTURE bubbles with the pure joy and exuberance of three talented people playing with a brand new toy. No film has ever been more fun to watch. When the pale man child known as Pee Wee Herman’s mechanical love ride is stolen by a bikenapper, a lot of quirk and circumstance follows as this cultural icon tries to rescue his two-wheeled best friend. This really is the most beautiful movie relationship between a man and an inanimate object (Tom Hanks and a volleyball comes in a close second). Things really get tense when Pee Wee pays a visit to main suspect – ferocious fatty, Francis. And what follows is the most intense swimming pool fight you will ever see. There’s a ghostly encounter with a Marge who is large and in charge, a daring escape from jealous jellyboy Andy and a train ride singalong with a sardine swallower. Then it’s off to the Alamo for the third act, and it’s the third act of this film that shows just how inspiring a figure Pee Wee really is. He shows that he can make the best of any situation when he turns a potential execution at the hands of the Satan’s Helpers into a glass-smashing biker bar dance. -SPOILERS- And just when you thought this tomfoolerific tale was over, there’s an incredible chase to top it all off! During this climax, Pee Wee dons none other than a nun costume, ruins a Japanese monster movie, liberates a pet store and doesn’t get a wrinkle in his impeccable grey suit in the process.

LAFF 2012 : BEAUTY IS EMBARRASSING

For over 30 years, LA-based artist Wayne White has made an indelible mark on the creative world.  As a designer, painter, puppeteer, sculptor, and musician, White created images that are an integral part of the pop culture lexicon.  BEAUTY IS EMBARRASSING tells the irreverent and inspiring story of this one-of-a-kind artist and raconteur.  The movie features Matt Groening, Mark Mothersbaugh, Todd Oldham, Paul Reubens, Gary Panter, Jonathan Dayton, Valerie Faris and many more.

BEAUTY IS EMBARRASSING is a colorful, wonderous look into the life of Wayne White. In Neil Berkeley’s documentary, he pieces together White’s life, and splices it with pieces of a live performance where White explains some of his views, as well as his upbringing.

In the film, it traces White’s career from underground cartoonist.  puppeteer and voice actor on Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, videographer, and all the way to visual artist. What is really fascinating is just how much he has done in his career, yet he didn’t get much recognition until he started painting over old, thrown out landscape paintings. Not only did he design puppets for Pee-Wee’s Playhouse and act as the voice of Randy, the playhouse bully, and Dirty Dog, part of the ultra cool jazz band, but he also directed Peter Gabriel’s video “Big Time” and designed the sets for the Smashing Pumpkins video “Tonight, Tonight”.

The documentary tells of the ups and downs of White’s career, as well as giving us a glimpse into his supportive, super creative family life. With interviews from close friends, critics and colleagues such as Matt Groening, Mark Mothersbaugh, Todd Oldham, Paul Reubens, Gary Panter, Jonathan Dayton, and Valerie Faris, BEAUTY IS EMBARRASSING is a fun film that is sure to spark a little creativity with audiences.

OVERALL RATING: 4 out of 5 stars

‘Flight of the Navigator’ Remake in the Works

flightnavigator

Normally, I’m not one to follow the projects in progress from Disney, but this one caught my interest in a nostalgic way. In 1986, a great little live-action science-fiction adventure flick for kids came out from Disney called ‘Flight of the Navigator’. This is one of the few live-action Disney movies that I really enjoyed.

News hit recently that Disney is planning on a remake of this classic from the 80’s and that causes me some fixed emotions. On one hand, I would actually like to see this childhood favorite of mine get remade into a more serious movie for us grown-up kids by a good director from a decent script. On the other hand, the project is being handled by Disney and we’ve seen what they’ve done with their other live-action remakes lately. (i.e. – ‘Race to Witch Mountain’)

The original ‘Flight of the Navigator’ follows a 12-year old boy named Joey who is swept away in a sleek, shiny spacecraft where he becomes the ship’s navigator. The ship is filled with cool and unique alien specimens and Joey experiences the journey of a lifetime. In the end, Joey is returned home after eight Earth years have passed.

Despite the original featuring an early Sarah Jessica Parker performance, it also features Paul Reubens (Pee Wee Herman) as the voice of Trimaxion and delivers some great special effects and fun for it’s time. If you haven’t seen the 1986 original, I highly recommend running out to your local video store, or online equivalent, and checking this one out.
