15 Best Film Scores of 2013

2012-film-scores

Contributed by Melissa Thompson and Michelle McCue

The sets. The hair and makeup. The cinematography. The story. The sound. All of the work of talented crafts people are pulled together under the very heart of any good movie – the score.

With the Academy Award nominations on Thursday, January 16, looming like the drumline at the head of a marching band, we thought we’d have a look back at some of the finer scores of 2013.

Listen and watch a handful of Hollywood’s leading composers discuss the art of scoring a film in The Hollywood Reporter’s round table discussion. With one hundred fourteen scores from 2013 vying for nominations in the Original Score category for the 86th Oscarswe suspect some of these names will be announced .

(THR)

Honorable Mention: INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS from T Bone Burnett.

The soundtrack for INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS transported us to another time and place. The documentary feeling of the film stems from the Coens Brothers decision to shoot and record the music live with no playback and we joined right in the folk-song revival.

For more on the music, read a Q&A with T Bone Burnett HERE.

GRAVITY soundtrack

1. GRAVITY – Steven Price

For Alfonso Cuarón’s thriller, Price created a groundbreaking score, blurring the lines between electronic and organic sounds, incorporating a wide range of elements, from glass harmonicas to string and brass sections. The score captures the on-screen emotion and vacuum of space as another character in the film and left our hearts pounding.

2. THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES – Mike Patton

American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Mike Patton, best known as the lead singer of the alternative metal/experimental rock bands Mr. Bungle and Faith No More, has composed a brooding and emotionally charged original score. Patton’s music guides the viewer through this multi-generational drama, linking characters, time periods, and locations with a harmonic convergence of jazz, folk, rock, blues and classical.

Patton’s score features an eclectic selection of music including selections by Arvo Part and Ennio Morricone.

all is lost

3. ALL IS LOST – Alex Ebert

In a film so devoid of dialogue, this great musical score assumed special importance. Director J.C. Chandor turned to acclaimed singer-songwriter Alex Ebert, leader of the band Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, to compose the film’s score—his first such project.

“It was sort of a shocker in some ways,” says Ebert. “It’s amazing that J.C. would have that kind of faith in someone who hadn’t scored a film.”

Ebert says Chandor initially asked him to deliver very subdued materials, drones and low notes that sustained over scenes. He also specifically requested that the instrumentation avoid piano. That was challenging for the composer, who had already written some pieces on piano, but he understood Chandor’s reasoning.

“The piano has this inherent emotion to it,” he says. “We didn’t want anything that was ’emotion in a can’ or ‘tension in a can.’ But eventually I started taking more chances, and after some back and forth with J.C., we landed in this middle spot that I think was perfect.”

“It’s about beauty,” he says. “It’s emotional and everything that comes along with life and death, and nothing less. I think that’s the primary subject of humanity—and it’s something that you might want to stay away from because it would be overdramatic. But this dude’s in the middle of the ocean on a raft. Let the music be emotional because it is emotional. We followed the movie’s lead.”

philomena

4. PHILOMENA – Alexandre Desplat

The very emotional score from Alexandre Desplat’s PHILOMENA broke our hearts. We laughed and cried from beginning to end with Philomena Lee’s heart-wrenching story.

Oblivion

5. OBLIVION – Anthony Gonzalez,  M83, Joseph Trapanese

The score was one of the best of 2013 and an intregral part of OBLIVION’s sci-fi landscape.

6. CAPTAIN PHILLIPS – Henry Jackman

Jackman displays versatility in capturing both the intense, desperation and terror in the story of Captain Richard Phillips’ hostage situation with Somali pirates as well as the humanity of the circumstances. Hitting the right musical balance of drama and intensity was a challenge in minimalism for Jackman, so as not to manipulate the audience.

nebraska

7. NEBRASKA – Mark Orton

A member of the bluegrass folk collective Tin Hat, Orton’s vibe for Americana music was sought out by director Alexander Payne. Horns, acoustic strings and organ are some of the primary elemental instruments fueling the musical emotion to this story, capturing both the vast landscape and people of the flyover states. Orton, a graduate of the Sundance Filmmaker Institute, also scored the music to the 2014 Sundance premiere Drunktown’s Finest.

8. DESPICABLE ME 2 – Heitor Pereira

A celebrated musician and former member of the platinum-selling group Simply Red, Pereira sings to the hearts of children through his scores for Despicable Me 2. The sequel, which follows the further adventures of the notorious spy Gru, Pereira created specific themes for the new characters, specifically 1960s romantic comedy tones for his love interest Lucy and Latin-mariachi rhythms for the evil El Macho.

9. SAVING MR. BANKS – Thomas Newman

Newman has composed music for nearly 100 motion pictures and television series and has earned 11 Academy Award® nominations and six Grammy® Awards. His score goes hand-in-hand with the back story of Walt Disney and PJ Travers making of MARY POPPINS and left us looking for tissues by the film’s end.

frozen

10. FROZEN – Christophe Beck

The second of Disney’s movies that showed young girls it was okay to be their very own heroes!

rush

11. RUSH – Hans Zimmer

With their collaborations on blockbusters from The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons to more intimate projects such as Frost/Nixon, director Ron Howard and Hans Zimmer, a Grammy, Golden Globe and Academy Award® winner, once again joined forces for the sounds of RUSH.

Balancing the racers’ simple desires with their frenetic-yet-controlled behavior on the track was a challenge for Howard and Zimmer as they created the soundtrack to the film. The composer captured the spirit of the Formula 1 world.

epic

12. EPIC – Danny Elfman

The rousing score for The Leaf-Men. Enough said.

pacific rim

13. PACIFIC RIM – Ramin Djawadi

Okay, so maybe it didn’t live up to everyone’s expectations, but hot damn if the score to PACIFIC RIM wasn’t one of the coolest of 2013. Made us want to suit up as Jaeger pilots and make a last stand in our ‘Gipsy Danger’.

14. WORLD WAR Z – Marco Beltrami

Animal skulls and teeth combined with percussion add to the tension of utter panic and anxiety in a world being overrun by a Zombie pandemic.

15. PRISONERS – Jóhann Jóhannsson

Giving you the sense of dread and desperation, Jóhann Jóhannsson’s score for PRISONERS left us with aches and chills over a parent’s worst nightmare.

croods

We couldn’t end our list without a quick mention for composer Alan Silvestri’s music for THE CROODS. While the film score conveyed beautiful themes and resonated on a deeper level than words could ever say, we were fans of how Silvestri combined the Abbey Road Orchestra  and the USC Trojan Marching Band… especially the percussion section!

OBLIVION – The Blu Review

Oblivion-Poster

Yes, it borrowed lots from other films (especially MOON and TOTAL RECALL) that provided more satisfying results and sure, it had some major plot holes. Yes, there was the obligatory futuristic dwelling with impossibly gleaming floors and silly modern furniture, but OBLIVION was simply a well-made and intelligent sci-fi epic, and that’s a rare beast these days. It could have used a little editing to tighten and better set up the big plot surprise, but it was still  enjoyable science fiction worth seeing on the big screen thanks to great performances from its cast (Tom Cruise, Morgan Freeman, Olga Kurylenko, Andrea Riseborough) that make the most of their characters and the gigantic canvas that the film was set against (you can read Jim Batts’s WAMG review HERE, though Jim liked it less than I did). Since it’s too late to see it on the IMAX, you’ll have to settle for Universal’s impressive new Blu-ray release.

oblivion1

This Blu-ray delivers a stunning 2.40:1 1080p image that is flawless in every perceivable way. The first thing that struck me about this disc is the wonderful amount of contrast between the various scenes. Colors are bold, clarity and detail is consistently worthy of a dropped jaw, and in culmination with immaculate black and contrast levels, there’s an impressive amount of depth to the characters on screen. Not only that, but the CGI is top-notch meaning the detailing was so good, the CGI backdrops themselves often helped lend to the illusion of depth, but after listening to the director’s commentary, I was surprised to learn that much of this wasn’t CGI at all, but actual Iceland location work. Seriously, if there’s one thing about OBLIVION that truly excels, it’s the visuals. If you can swallow this film for the action scenes alone and won’t be soured by how familiar they all feel, you’re likely to have a blast with this reference quality disc. The DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 mix is equally impressive.

Extras:

Audio Commentary – Tom Cruise teams up with director Joseph Kosinski (whose graphic novel is the story’ source) for a lively and informative chat. Cruise has always been involved in many aspects of his films and that shows here. He often sounds like more of a producer than an actor and knows an impressive amount of details about cameras and other tech specs. As the film progresses, there are more and more empty spaces here though.

Destiny – an eleven minute talk with director Joseph Kosinski who discusses the genesis of his ideas and how they made it to the big screen,

Harmony– a 6-minute doc about the film’s score.

Illusion – a 6-minute special effects featurette that I wish had been longer.

Deleted Scenes – There are two running a total of four minutes. One features Victoria and Jack explaining the healing technology they have, and another is a scene in the stadium. Both are good scenes that may have added some detail to parts of the story that may have seemed unclear.

The Blu-ray is accompanied by its DVD counterpart, which also gives you access to the UltraViolet Digital Copy.

OBLIVION will be released on Blu-ray August 6th

M83, Joseph Trapanese And The Music Of OBLIVION

oblivion_gallery22

Tom Cruise stars in OBLIVION, an original and groundbreaking cinematic event from the visionary director of TRON: Legacy and producers of Rise of the Planet of the Apes.  On a spectacular future Earth that has evolved beyond recognition, one man’s confrontation with the past will lead him on a journey of redemption and discovery as he battles to save mankind.

When director Joseph Kosinski wrote the story for OBLIVION in 2005, he listed in the treatment a soundtrack from the mastermind behind M83, Anthony Gonzalez. He felt that M83 was an artist whose music fit the story he was trying to tell, and knew that when he made the film, his temp score should become his permanent one.

The French native, who has toured internationally with bands from Depeche Mode and The Killers to Kings of Leon, debuted in 2001 and recently released his first double-disc album, “Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming” as his sixth record. Says the director: “His music is not only cutting edge but it’s also very emotional. It felt like a good fit for this movie.”

Here’s a sneak peek at the production of the OBLIVION soundtrack with M83’s Anthony Gonzalez, composer Joseph Trapanese, and director Joseph Kosinski.

Together with Joseph Trapanese, Kosinski’s orchestrator from TRON: Legacy, they composed soaring, expansive soundscapes that distinguish OBLIVION and correlate to its wondrous visuals and action. Continues Kosinski: “It’s a hybrid score in a way. It has electronics and drum kits that you wouldn’t recognize from M83’s music, but at the same time, we’ve got a full orchestra and a choir. Bringing all these different elements together into something that feels cohesive and appropriate for our movie was a fun part of the process, and it blended beautifully. It sounds very original, which is all I wanted for an original film.”

M83 walks us through his interest in the collaboration: “I’ve been wanting forever to make soundtracks, so starting with such a big, ambitious movie like this one makes me feel very lucky. Joe and I started to work on the project together, and we began talking about ideas for the score, so I started nerding out about science-fiction films and soundtracks.”

M83 had a number of movie score offers in the past but hadn’t agreed to compose for a film. “I never had the chance to fall in love with the right script or the right story like I have with OBLIVION. I feel connected to this story, and to the influences of Joe as a filmmaker, I feel ready to pull it off.”

The producers were happy with his choice. Offers Clark: “Anthony Gonzalez was somebody that Joe had been tracking for some time. All of the albums that M83 had made before this film felt in preparation for OBLIVION. Joe is a gifted musician himself, and this was a match made in heaven.”

Watch OBLIVION’s Bubbleship In Action

wp_2_s

Tom Cruise stars in OBLIVION, an original and groundbreaking cinematic event from the visionary director of TRON: Legacy and producers of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. On a spectacular future Earth that has evolved beyond recognition, one man’s confrontation with the past will lead him on a journey of redemption and discovery as he battles to save mankind.

Have a look as OBLIVION’s cast & crew share how the bubbleship came to life and then pop over to the film’s official site – http://www.oblivionmovie.com/ – and listen the film’s exhilarating score. Composer Joseph Trapenese has collaborated with artists for several of the most anticipated soundtracks of recent memory: from Daft Punk (TRON: Legacy) to Mike Shinoda (The Raid: Redemption), as well as M83 (“Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming” and OBLIVION) and Moby (“Extreme Ways” from The Bourne Legacy).

Abutting the living space on the Skytower set is a landing pad for the Bubbleship, Jack’s primary form of transportation as he travels to and from Earth’s surface. Director Joseph Kosinski was thrilled to see the vehicle he imagined several years ago—a hybrid of a jet fighter and a Bell 47 helicopter—finally come to life. “The Bubbleship was the first thing we designed for the film,” he offers. “For everyone who grew up on Top Gun, like I did in the ’80s, it is pretty spectacular to see Tom back in the cockpit flying an aircraft like this.”

OBLIVION features thrilling, vertiginous new heights experienced when Jack pilots the Bubbleship, liberated from linear flight for a freewheeling, 360-degree freedom of kinetic aerobatics and crazily choreographed dogfights. Cruise discusses the experience of being on the Bubbleship: “Joe showed me the drawings and the concept art, and I just thought, ‘this is so cool.’ I’m a pilot, and I love the way he designed it. It’s as beautiful as it is on screen. Every piece of it was so smooth and elegant, and they designed it to fit my body for all the action.” He laughs, “I want someone to build it so we can fly it for real.”

For more than a year before the beginning of principal photography, the team at Wildfactory in Camarillo, California—led by key designer Daniel Simon—crafted a flying apparatus of the future. Once approved designs were in place, the Bubbleship took four months to build in a warehouse in Los Angeles. Then it was taken apart, shipped off for filming and subsequently reassembled in Louisiana, Iceland and Mammoth, California. Sums Kosinski of the creation: “It’s this hybrid of a Bell 47 helicopter that’s hanging in MoMA in New York City and a jet fighter.”

For the design, Simon was inspired by emergent NASA technology. Still, he knew how critical it was for the audience to comprehend how the Bubbleship might be able to fly. From dials, foot pedals and joysticks to a seat with lumbar support, the cockpit resembles a helicopter, while still evoking a futuristic craft. Made of aluminum and fiberglass and weighing in at 4,500 pounds, the Bubbleship travels in seven containers, with four technicians accompanying the vehicle. It has to be disassembled for air cargo, and it may only be lifted by forklift. It takes five hours to assemble, with a four-person crew working nonstop on all of its parts.

The Bubbleship components include the fuselage, cockpit, tail boom, two engines, flippers and landing gear; all of these parts have small panels that need to be assembled by hand. The landing gear serves as the base of the plane and holds the rest of the vehicle upright, while the two motorized doors to the cockpit open simultaneously.

Simon discusses the vehicle’s structure: “In the concept of the whole design process, it was a given that the Bubbleship should look insect-like and lightweight. That’s why we came up with this finessed and fragile landing gear; it’s actually three legs. At the beginning of the design, we had it the other way around: We had the two legs in the back. It’s based on a futuristic, compound structure, and it’s capable of flying in space and in the atmosphere. It’s a combined spaceship plus flight vehicle, completely designed from scratch.”

BUBBLESHIP-2

Production designer Darren Gilford expounds that the team needed to build a few incarnations of the Bubbleship. He says: “We had the complete Bubbleship, which is out on the bubble pad at the Skytower set; then we had just the cockpit on a full-motion-based gimbal. We received all of the flying footage, then in visual effects the rest of the ship was put on the backside of the cockpit. Then we built a couple other pieces. For example, we built a few crashed Bubbleships. It’s been more fun than you can imagine.”

Visual effects producer Steve Gaub is extremely proud that the team’s hard work has paid off. He says: “The Bubbleship design is impeccable, and it’s one of the coolest things I’ve seen. In VFX we were able to give that thing weight—all those little nuances and movements that make it feel like it could fly and move around. We’re familiar with helicopters and we’re familiar with planes, and this is a hybrid. So a lot of attention to detail was put in there to make the audience believe that this thing was built and can fly.”

On Stage 6, the Bubbleship gimbal was constructed. Housing an identical replica of the Bubbleship cockpit—though one without glass—this rig was able to simulate air travel with the help of a green-screen background. Indeed, the VFX team later doctored in the landscape details and lighting variations. Similar to a ride at an amusement park, the cockpit (with two seats) was attached to a motion base. On its axis, the gimbal can rotate 360 degrees; therefore, the effects of centrifugal force and gravity on Cruise and Kurylenko are obvious to the audience.

Rams and hydraulics, with accumulators in the middle, made for 1,700-psi storage. When the computer-programmed and -controlled Bubbleship gimbal demanded a move, voltage was sent to command it to go either left to right or up and down. The gimbal’s motion base resembles a flight simulator with six degrees of freedom and six cylinders that form a hexapod.

The gimbal rig was bolted to the ground and had the capacity of tilting to a 45-degree angle, 22 degrees up and 22 degrees down. For these moves, the cast wasn’t required to wear a full harness, only a seat belt. With the expertise of special effects coordinator MICHAEL MEINARDUS and stunt coordinator Alonzo, the gimbal created the illusion that the cast was actually flying an aircraft.

The VFX team put in the cockpit glass and the rest of the Bubbleship—as well as environments and landscapes that the craft flew through and across—during postproduction. In fact, the backgrounds plates were shot in Iceland and are actual landscapes specific to the country. These plates were filmed precisely to match the Bubbleship action shot on stage and some were modified with visual effects after principal photography wrapped.
