Toy Fair 2017: Diamond Select Toys

SONY DSC

Toy Fair is an annual trade show where hundreds of toy companies get together to showcase their latest innovations for buyers and press. The following is a photo recap from the Diamond Select booth. To see the rest of our coverage, click HERE.

I walked around the Diamond Select Toys area for about a minute before I was informed that it was a closed booth and I needed an appointment for a walkthrough. While their schedule was packed, they were gracious enough to squeeze me in for a quick photo tour. Next year I will plan ahead to schedule a video interview because there was certainly a lot to on display, such as the Spider above from SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING.

Being a Marvel collector, their DOCTOR STRANGE statue will definitely have a home on my shelves whenever it is officially released this Fall. The Captain America and Iron Man statues are both equally amazing but I do get the impression their bases may look a little weird when separated. Speaking of connected bases, I really wish the Gallery Edition statues of the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY shared this feature. The Rocket / Gamora and Drax / Baby Groot statues could possibly work together but Star Lord breaks up the pack. Regardless, all three are absolutely incredible pieces and at under $50 each, they are an absolute steal. In fact, all the Gallery Edition statues are pretty amazing; I just wish they were in a slightly larger scale to match the rest of my collection.

DST seems to be going all in on A NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS with dozens of items on display. The Collector Editions of Jack & Sally in coffin packaging look pretty fantastic, as do the other figure displays such as Halloweentown Jack.

I am not sure how much I can say about the figures that I was instructed not to photograph but let’s just say the PULP FICTION line is just getting started and will soon be joined by some other Tarantino films. As for everything else I am allowed to share, check out the pics below…

Super Badass Geek Stuff: Movie Villages

We’ve all likely seen, or at least heard of the  Department 56 collectibles. You know, the  quaint little holiday villages that collectors can build over time, customizing their own  perfect little towns. They start with little houses and stores and various  Main Street type buildings, then add trees and little people of all kinds to make an intricate  Christmas town to display proudly on… well, where ever they can fit them? Honestly, I’ve never known anyone personally who’s collected these things, but I see the vast array of selections and accessories in stores  every holiday season.

No need to worry, my fellow movie geeks… these aren’t cute little “girlie” decorations. The Village of Horror Classics from Hawthorne Village is sure to make your Sunday guests stare in fear at your collectible town of haunted houses and serial killers. The House on Elm Street, Crystal Lake Cabin… just the beginning! Once you have your terrifying town built you can start adding its ruthless residents. Who needs milk men, postal carriers and grocery clerks when you can have Jason, Freddy and Leatherface to populate your special holiday townscape? And the houses even light up! Ooh! Navy Seals!

Less frightening but just as friggin’ cool… Hawthorne Village also has other Movie Geek friendly “build-your-own” towns including a Universal Monsters themed town populated with all your favorite classic monsters; and also a ‘Nightmare Before Christmas’ themed town which is certain to empty a lot of pocketbooks. I really liked the film, but good grief… it’s been crazy-culty popular like ‘Rocky Horror’ from day one, and there’s no sign of it letting up! These towns aren’t cheap, but who ever said Movie Geeks were concerned with getting “bargains” on their Badass Geek Stuff?

Review: ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’ on DVD

I was able to correct a huge void in my video library this week. Thank You, Disney Home Video for releasing “The Nightmare Before Christmas Collector’s Edition” DVD. I’m a huge Tim Burton fan and was utterly amazed that I did not own Nightmare. Right next to my Corpse Bride and Sweeney Todd DVDF there was a noticeable void. (I still think the wife  loaned it out) But now everything is right in Ram Man’s universe, I own the Collector’s Edition of the Nightmare Before Christmas on DVD!

Nightmare is Tim Burton’s stop motion animated classic that was a smash hit at the theaters in October of 1993, now re-vamped and digitized on a 2 disc special edition DVD. The story, based on a poem by Tim Burton,is a twist on the classic Grinch that stole Christmas.  This has Jack Skellington, the pumpkin king of Holloween, convincing his fellow residents of Holloweentown that they need to kidnap Santa and give Christmas a ghoolish make-over! As Jack prepares for his new holiday Santa goes missing again. Jack’s nemesis, Oogie Boogie, has taken the jolly old elf and Jack’s girlfreind Sally as well. Jack realizes the error in his thinking and squares off against Oogie Boogie to rescue Sally and save Christmas! The fable features the voice talents of Catherine O’Hara,Chris Sarandon,Ken Page and a score by the great Oingo Boingo lead singer Danny Elfman! This film is a joy for the entire family. A Sequel for ‘A Nightmare Before Christmas’ … ?

During an interview with ShockTillYouDrop.com, Henry Selick was asked about the possibility of a sequel to ‘A Nightmare Before Christmas’ …

[“There has been discussions over the years about a possible sequel. When those discussions came up about 7 years ago it was unsettling that it was suggested this time it would have to be done in CG. I’m glad that did not happen. But as far as coming up ideas for a sequel, you have to admit there are a lot of other great holidays for Jack Skellington to take over”.]

Personally, I say let the legend be. This is a classic and needs no sequel. Sure, it has plenty of sequel possibilities, but none of them would catch fire quite like this one. Besides, the fantastic  traditional animation techniques used were a major part of why the film was so magically awesome. To go full CGI with a sequel would truly be a shame. I certainly hope they do not tarnish this incredible film with any sequels, and certainly not any remakes.
