DIVERGENT – The Review

DIVERGENT

It’s no wonder a studio like Summit Entertainment would be interested in bringing Veronica Roth’s book series to the big-screen. Between the theme of government control set amid a sci-fi setting and the focus being on a young woman discovering who she really is amidst a growing rebellion, it’s not a stretch to see that DIVERGENT might be the next THE HUNGER GAMES. To put it simply, GAMES doesn’t have to worry about any sort of competition from this new young adult rival, but those interested in that world shouldn’t completely dismiss this entertaining coming of age story either.

Where THE HUNGER GAMES has somehow been able to appeal to readers and film fans of both young and old, this new young adult series may not be as lucky. This is mostly in part to the focus on romance rather than substance. When so much attention is paid to whether the two good-looking leads will kiss or not, you begin to see what really is most important in this series. Thankfully this budding romance isn’t nearly as agonizing as say the TWILIGHT films, but make no mistake, this is clearly a young adult series. And with that warning, be prepared to witness precocious teens try to catch cutesy glances at one another. So much so that you almost forgot that you are supposedly watching a science fiction film interested in bigger ideas.

In DIVERGENT, the Chicago of the distant future is separated into different factions. Each faction – don’t you dare try to make me recount all their names and what they stand for – is comprised of individuals who share specific personality traits that are unique to that faction. When you get to a certain age, a mental test is conducted that probes the mind to find out who you should belong to. Of course, the choice is always up to the individual, but no person should have all of the traits that make up the five factions. Only in very rare instances does this happen. Those individuals whose tests come back “inconclusive” are called Divergents.

Tris, played with all heart and gusto by Shailene Woodley, happens to be one of these individuals. When she is told to hide her test results, she is forced to decide what faction she wants to belong to. She ends up choosing “Dauntless” even though it goes against her family tradition. The Dauntless are known for their heroics and athletic ability. Through her training she meets a ragtag group of teens who are all striving to be officially accepted into the group. Only if you pass all of the tests and are in the upper percentage of the new recruits will you get accepted. One of her mentors, mysteriously named Four (the smoldering Theo James), seems to take a liking to Tris but also sees her as a potential problem due to some of the other traits she exhibits that other Dauntless members don’t possess. Four and Tris soon discover that they share more than just an emotional connection and that there lives may be at risk due to mounting pressure between the factions.

The film seems to suffer from being a slave to the source material. Even if you look past the bloated running time, so much effort is put into the training sequences and Tris “finding herself” amid the diverse group that you spend the majority of the film waiting for the plot to kick into gear. I will say that these coming of age scenes have a breezy easiness to the way they are laid out even if they become repetitious after awhile. The trials and obstacles she must face even seem to carry some minor symbolism as they act almost as stepping-stones showing a naïve girl transforming into a strong woman. It’s only when the film finally decides to deal with the larger issue of the story that everything suddenly feels rushed. Everything in the final 20 minutes feels like narrative overload, abruptly tacked on to make way for the subsequent films in the book series. By the end of the chaotic finale, you may find yourself looking back and appreciating some of the quieter moments from earlier in the film – especially a soaring scene where we see Tris literally soaring above the city set to a song by the band M83.

Director Neil Burger (LIMITLESS, THE ILLUSIONIST) takes such great care setting up these characters but wastes his calculated handling of the story in its finale. One could argue that the story could function much better as a TV series. Even though a similar book series has been adapted and made quite a splash at the box-office recently, I feel the deliberate pace that is spent to get to know each of these characters – which I can only assume is also present in the books – could translate to the small screen more efficiently. The entire ensemble seems appropriately cast and all are captivating on screen thanks to some impressive cinematography (Alwin H. Küchler). Burger’s direction mostly elevates the teen love affair into something slightly more just through his approach to this story. However, I would be remiss not to warn those unfamiliar with the books that this truly is an adaptation of a young adult novel. That being said, don’t be surprised if the film inspires even more young people to join the DIVERGENT fan faction.

LIMITLESS – The Review

Here’s a variation of an old ethical question-what would you risk in order to get everything you desire? It’s been explored in stories and fables such as Aladdin and his Genie and the Monkey’s Paw. This time the magic is in the form of an untested drug. Pop the pill and reach your full potential. The catch is that it’s still experimental. There could be side effects. Would you take that risk? These are the conundrums at the center of the new thriller from director Neil Burger (2006’s THE ILLUSIONIST), LIMITLESS.

At the start of the film, Eddie Morra (Bradley Cooper) is standing on a ledge at the top floor of a brand new high rise. Should he take that extra step and jump or face whoever is attempted to bust through the steel entrance door of  his home? How did he get in this predicament? His mind races back several weeks. We see an unkempt Eddie shuffling across a New York City street. He meets up with his upwardly mobile girlfriend Lindy (Abbie Cornish). She’s frustrated with Eddie’s lack of progress with his science fiction novel (he’s spent almost all of the advance with almost nothing written) and ends their relationship. Leaving the diner Eddie bumps into his ex-wife’s brother Vernon (Johnny Whitworth). Seems that Vernon’s a hotshot sales rep for a pharmaceutical company. He then gifts Eddie a sample of the company’s new, untested wonder- drug MDT which can unleash 100 % of your brain’s potential (we only use about 15%). Eddie’s shrugs him off, but takes the pills. After several hours of procrastinating at a blank laptop screen, he gives the pill a try! Boom! The words of his novel flood out of him and on to the computer. He then cleans up and organizes his sty of an apartment. After dropping off the completed manuscript at his stunned editor’s office, he encounters the angry wife of his landlord. Noticing her law textbook, he helps her write a thesis, and they share a bit of afternoon delight. Eddie then starts to have difficulty focusing. He needs more MDT. After calling Vernon, Eddie is stunned when the worked over, bruised salesman greets him at his apartment. Vernon asks Eddie to pick up some breakfast and his dry cleaning. They’ll work out a deal when Eddie gets back. Returning from the errands, Eddie pushes open the unlocked door and finds Vernon dead from a shot to the temple. After calling the police, Eddie searches through the ransacked rooms and locates several thousand dollars and a huge stash of MDT. Eddie then begins to re-invent himself. He trims down, gets finely groomed, acquires tailored suits, and has a friend put him in at an investment firm. After borrowing a hundred grand from a shady Russian loan shark, Eddie astounds his co-workers with his success in stocks. Eddie is also successful in reconnecting with Lindy. Soon the Wall Street whiz kid attracts the attention of mogul Carl Van Loon ( Robert De Niro ). Seems all’s going great for the new Eddie until he begins waking up in unfamiliar places with hazy memories of weird nocturnal adventures. And there’s a creepy fella following him everywhere. Oh and that thug wants his loan repaid now. Maybe he should up his dosage. Oh oh, he’s nearly out of pills? What’ll happen to his big plans now? Not to mention his addicted brain and body!

For most the film director Burger keeps the story humming along at a fast clip. He uses lots of rapid editing and computer graphics to illustrate  Eddie’s drug-fried brain. During one of his dreamy wanderings, he’s stunned to discover that he’s at the center of a subway brawl. His brain then quickly flashes back to his nine year old self watching a Bruce Lee actioner on the tube. Those bruisers didn’t stand a chance. Cooper brings a lot of energy to the role of Eddie, but I had a difficult time accepting him as a super human computer. Perhaps it’s because he’s so good at playing obnoxious jerks in films like WEDDING CRASHERS and THE HANGOVER. Cornish makes for a great smart, sexy, romantic sidekick. It’s a shame that her character is absent from most of the final third of the film. De Niro’s his usual gruff, intimidating stuff. He just doesn’t have a whole lot to do other than being a very scary version of Donald Trump. The NYC locations are used to great effect during some very tense chase sequences. My main problem with the film is it’s abrupt, almost truncated ending. I was reminded a bit of the sudden shift and stop at the conclusion of UNBREAKABLE. Perhaps a director’s cut or extra scenes in the DVD will help the finale make a bit more sense. Despite the plotting problems LIMITLESS puts a nice pharmaceutical spin on that old adage that warns “Be careful what you wish for”.

Overall Rating: 3 1/2 out of 5 stars

LIMITLESS Trailer

In the suspense thriller that was originally titled THE DARK FIELDS, here’s the trailer for what Relativity Media now calls LIMITLESS starring Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro.

Synopsis:

LIMITLESS is a paranoia-fueled action thriller about an unpublished writer whose life is transformed by a top-secret smart drug that allows him to use 100% of his brain and become a perfect version of himself. His enhanced abilities soon attract shadowy forces that threaten his new life in this darkly comic and provocative film.

From the director of THE ILLUSIONIST, Neil Burger, LIMITLESS will hit theaters on March 18, 2011.

DARK FIELDS Are in Bradley Cooper’s Future

bradley cooper

Always on the lookout to post a picture of an adorable monkey.  The other guy, the one smiling, is actor Bradley Cooper, and with his slate of upcoming movies, he has quite a lot to smile about.  Add one more to that slate, as, according to Heat Vision, the actor is set to star in Neil Burger’s next film, DARK FIELDS.

The film, written by Leslie Dixon (THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR) and based on the book by Alan Glynn, centers on a writer who uncovers a top secret drug that instantly makes one smarter.  Of course, as the writer soon discovers, the drug has strange side effects including “trip-switching”, in which time seems to move at a stop-motion pace.

Not entirely sure how the story plays out, but this sounds like a possibility for the beginning of a pseud-realistic superhero movie, if, in fact, the protagonist learns at some point to use this “trip-switching” as an ability.  In that, the film could be somewhat in the vein of PUSH or JUMPER.  Take that news how you will.

I’ve liked Bradley Cooper since the little-seen but effective thriller MY LITTLE EYE in 2002.  He has that leading man presence, but it doesn’t seem like he’s afraid to take on meatier roles than the norm.  His stock jumped up quite a bit after THE HANGOVER, and expect it to jump up even more after next year’s THE A-TEAM.  He and Burger, who is looking to gain back some of his THE ILLUSIONIST credit after last year’s disappointing THE LUCKY ONES, are sure to make a great team on this one.

No set date has been announced for DARK FIELDS either for its release or for its start of production.

New ‘NIMH’ Project in the Works

nimh

‘Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH’ are having another go-around on the big screen.  Director Neil Burger (‘The Illusionist’) is in talks with Paramount to write the screenplay for another adaptation of the Robert C. O’Brien 1972 novel about a field mouse who must move her family along with her sick son out of the path of a farmer’s plow.

Many movie geeks will remember the 1982, animated feature from Don Bluth, ‘The Secret of NIMH.’  Unlike that film, this new film looks to combine live action with animation, a style that is becoming more and more popular.

Cary Granat (‘Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D’ and executive producer on the ‘Spy Kids’ franchise) will be serving as producer.
