Review: MYSTERY TEAM

mystery team

“Mystery Team”, the brainchild of the Derrick Comedy crew, is one of those special films that captures the magic of a great ‘who-dun-it’. With some Nancy-Drew-like protagonists mashed in alongside a harsh R-rated crime world, the concept flows perfectly. The three protagonists are members of the infamous neighborhood kid detective squad known as The Mystery Team. Jason (Donald Glover) is the group’s master of disguise, Duncan (D.C. Pierson) is the smartest kid in class, and Charlie (Dominic Dierkes) is the strongest kid in town. Together the trio solves insignificant “mysteries” around the neighborhood, like who stuck their finger in the pie, or where that missing kitten wandered off to. The group is all grown up today, and still doing just what they’ve always done, that is, until a little girl down the street asks the Mystery Team to find out who killed her parents. Jason, Duncan, and Charlie embark on a quest to find the killer(s) and discover along the way that the town they thought they knew when they were kids may be a tad seedier than they thought.

The protagonists are what make the film the great little raunchy adventure that it is. The naivety of Jason, Duncan, and Charlie contrasted with “gentleman’s clubs” and coke dealers, works as a great concept and is executed perfectly. The magic of “Mystery Team” resides in its nicely paced, and witty story. The script is top-notch and packed with punch line after punch line with a bit of physical comedy too. The entire plot seems like its been crafted to please the audience the whole way through. It’s obvious the script was carefully written by D.C, Dominic, and Donald, who have pulled out all the stops, throwing in one great idea after the other. The film oozes with the trademarked outrageous situations that put Derrick Comedy on the proverbial Youtube map.

Director, Dan Eckman does a more than adequate job of putting the story on celluloid. Considering the relatively small budget the film looks professional and polished. There are some excellent sequences like a late night squabble in a baseball field that stands out as one of the best looking scenes in the movie.

The film is a kind of spoof or tribute to mystery films, yet remains rooted in a traditional narrative. The humor exists in the awkwardness of the always out of place characters without letting Duncan Charlie and Jason wander too far into being parodies. They’re out of place in a gritty realistic world, but maintain their own identities as people the audience can still relate to, being the sweet underdogs they are. The references to classic noir films as well as mystery films of the 50’s exist in just about every scene. There’s also a subtle subtext toward the second half of the film where it experiments with being a very sincere coming of age tale.

If you get the chance to see “Mystery Team” in the theater, don’t hesitate to check it out. This is one special ‘R’ rated comedy that’s sure to be a huge hit when it hits its DVD release. Be sure to visit www.mysteryteam-movie.com to see when “Mystery Team” will come to a theater near you. I can guarantee it will be more fun than fisting a steaming pile of gooey stripper turds.

New theatrical trailer for ‘Mystery Team’

Dan Eckman, the director of ‘Mystery Team’, posted a tweet about the new theatrical trailer having just gone up on YouTube. Because this movie makes me drool and get more excited than the time i got my first han… just watch the trailer below and enjoy it:

‘Mystery Team’ will be Representing at ComicCon 2009!

Do I really need to explain to you what this movie is about again? If you are a frequent reader here you know I am in love with the Derrick Comedy’s ‘Mystery Team’. The film made its premier at Sundance and somehow got looked over by studios before being picked up a couple of weeks ago by Roadside Attractions.

/Film posted news about their first screening since being picked up, which will be at Comic-Con. Check it out below:

First up, I’ve learned that Derrick Comedy’s Mystery Team will not only have a booth on the convention floor, but will be holding a panel and a special sneak preview screening at the con. No word on the exact dates.   Writers/stars Dominic Dierkes, Donald Glover, and DC Pierson, producer Meggie McFadden, and director/editor Dan Eckman will be on hand at the panel debuting an all-new Mystery Team short film.

That is stupid exciting, especially since we are going to be there in full force(or at least half force). I have never been to Comic-Con and what better than to see ‘Mystery Team’ again my first year.

‘Mystery Team’ will see a nationwide release!

mysteryteam2

One of my favorite films at Sundance has finally gotten a buyer for US distribution. ‘Mystery Team’ has been picked up by Roadside Attractions and will see a national release this fall. Here is a snippit from the press release:

Roadside Attractions has acquired all U.S. rights to DERRICK Comedy’s MYSTERY TEAM, the first feature length film from DERRICK Comedy, one of the web’s most successful comedy teams, it was announced today by Eric d’Arbeloff, Co-President, Roadside Attractions. The group will embark on an innovative advance-release tour of colleges in the late summer, to be followed by a national release this fall.

All I can really say is its about freaking time. Everyone that watched this at Sundance raved about it and I honestly cant believe it took this long for a buyer to see the light. When we get more details we will make them available, but for now you can check out my review from Sundance of ‘Mystery Team’.

See ‘Mystery Team’ for free in NYC next week!

mystery-team-nyc

One of my favorite movies at Sundance, ‘Mystery Team‘, will be screening for FREE in NYC next week. This is freaking awesome, I had to travel like 1500 miles to see this movie, but if you are in NY you can see it for FREE. What are you guys still doing here reading this? Leave your house now and form a line at the Cinema Village theater for this… you don’t want to miss it.

‘Mystery Team’ still hasnt found a buyer!

‘Mystery Team’ was one of the best movies at Sundance and it still has not gotten purchased which in my eyes is a travesty. Everyone that I talked to about this movie absolutely loved it at Sundance, and I really cannot believe no one has stepped up to the plate yet.

Even with people being scared of the movie not making a splash at the box office, this movie will be HUGE on dvd, cult classic status. Not to mention the fact that Derrick Comedy has a very large Internet following and if this movie is marketed properly, it could definitely reach ‘Napoleon Dynamite’ big very easily.

All of those guys matter, and all of those guys loved the movie. Think about all of the combined page views and visits they all/we all get and then figure that if we are pounding down our readers throats to go see the movie it will probably happen. Whoever gets this movie will wind up with a cash cow, lets just hope they cash in properly.
