March 27-29 Weekend Box Office Estimates

monsters-vs-aliens-poster

Shocker….’Monsters vs Aliens’ did exactly what the producers from Dreamworks were hoping for…so much for the reviews from Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes. This’ll  only provide more ammo to Dreamworks chief, Jeffrey Katzenberg, to go ahead with his diabolical plan for world domination….ha, kidding….  to make all future animated films in 3D. Panda Hugger, out in Hollywood, said ‘Monsters vs Aliens’ played just fine in 2D in the Dome at the ArcLight. Just  look at the poor showing (yawn!)  made by Fox’s ’12 Rounds’. John Cena should stick to the WWE. And lord help us, ‘Dragonball Evolution’ is next on the horizon.  Fox was so through with their so-so ’12 Rounds’ marketing campaign weeks ago  and are gearing up for  a huge summer with ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ and ‘Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian’.

  1. ‘Monsters vs Aliens’  – wknd   $58.2 mil.

Review: ‘Monsters Vs. Aliens’

monsters-aliens

Is any animation studio every going to topple PIXAR?   Not that we’re looking for someone to do that, but DreamWorks is coming closer with every cinematic effort.   With ‘Monsters Vs. Aliens,’ it has become evident, to me, anyway, that there is something DreamWorks does better than PIXAR ever could do.

It has something to do with comedic timing.   Past DreamWorks animated films like ‘Kung Fu Panda’ and ‘Madagascar’ had superb comedic timing.   I can’t imagine the difficulty of pulling something like this off in the animated world.   ‘Monsters Vs. Aliens’ does this brilliantly.   I can’t think of a better animated film that has ever had better comedic timing than ‘Monsters Vs. Aliens.’

Much of this stems from the voice talents comprised within this film.   Reese Witherspoon, perky as ever, brings a real spirit to her lead character, that of a girl who, after being crushed by a falling meteor, grows to ginormous size and becomes Ginormica.   Witherspoon, while funny, is playing the straight-man to every other monster the US government has been hiding away for years, though.

The funniest of them is Seth Rogen as BOB (short for Bicarbonate Ostylezene Benzoate).   BOB is a Blob-like creature who doesn’t think you need a brain to survive and who forgets to breath sometimes.   Just having BOB break out in Rogen’s infectious laugh occasionally does the trick.

However, it’s not just BOB in this film that brings the funny in truckloads.   Every character is hilarious.   Dr. Cockroach (voiced by Hugh Laurie), The Missing Link (voiced by Will Arnett), and even the General who serves as all of these monsters’ warden (voiced by Kiefer Sutherland) all have at least half a dozen moments where they make you laugh out loud.   Rainn Wilson voices the invading Gallaxhar, and his Schrute-ness is in full effect.

The comedy found herein, however, doesn’t rely on voice talent alone.   The whole slew of screenwriters involved have crafted a charming and equally interesting story.   While a lot of the humor deals in the usage of   Gallaxhar’s invasion comes rather late in the game, and a little more Wilson would have benefited the film, but it’s a minor detail to complain about.

A lot of work went into the visuals, as well as the editing. Â  DreamWorks has never been at the head of the class when it comes to visuals. Â  PIXAR still rules in that category. Â  However, the computer animation on ‘Monsters Vs. Aliens’ is highly serviceable enough that it’s not a distraction from the story or the comedy. Â  It certainly looks grand in 3D.

And, while I’m on the 3D subject, I’ll say ‘Monsters Vs. Aliens’ is not a film that has to be seen in 3D. Â  Unlike ‘Coraline’, which was a film that benefited greatly from its 3D, ‘Monsters Vs. Aliens’ can be enjoyed equally with or without the images coming out at you. Â  There were only a few times where the film becomes conscious of its gimmick, where someone purposefully throws something at you for the sake of showing off the 3D. Â  These times, while a bit cringe-worthy, are fleeting, so that negative can be brushed off pretty easily.

I will say the kids will eat the 3D experience up. Â  Just in the opening credits, the kids will literally ooh and aah, and you can’t help but get a smile on your face when you hear a hundred kids scream at the sight of a meteor shooting past.

Funny and amazing in all the right aspects, ‘Monsters Vs. Aliens’ is an experience for everyone in your family.   Your kids will enjoy the hilarity of the sight gags and the amazement of the visuals.   However, the film never dumbs itself down to only work on a child-like level.   There are still plenty of jokes and visuals for adults to enjoy equally as much.   While there are better animated comedies that have come before it (‘The Incredibles’ is one such film), ‘Monsters Vs. Aliens’ could very well be the funniest animated film I’ve ever seen.

‘Monsters vs. Aliens’ [PG] opens today in theaters everywhere.

[Overall: 4.5 stars out of 5]

Post-Oscars Film Footage Here

oscar3

Hope you didn’t turn off the Oscar’s broadcast just as soon as Steven Spielberg pronounced the first “s” in ‘Slumdog Millionaire’.   If you did, however, you missed some pretty exciting footage of upcoming movies.   I love that they did this.   I really hope it turns into an annual tradition to reveal first-ever seen footage over the end credits of the Academy Awards.   For those of you who did miss out on this footage, here it is for your viewing pleasure:

‘Public Enemies’ and ‘Amelia’ look excellent.   Can’t wait for ‘Sherlock Holmes’, either.

Dont miss the ‘Monsters VS Aliens’ superbowl spot in 2 days

2 more days until the ‘Monsters vs. Aliens’ Superbowl spot, which is the first commercial to be completely in 3D. If you havent already go out and get your 3D glasses at your local grocery store, they have distributed 125 million of them! Here is the press release:

DreamWorks Animation SKG, Inc. (NYSE: DWA) and PepsiCo’s SoBe Lifewater today announced that they have joined together with Intel Corporation and NBC to create a first-of-its kind, nationwide ‘Monstrous’ 3D event for Super Bowl XLIII. This first-ever all 3D Super Bowl commercial break event will mark the debut of DreamWorks Animation’s premier 3D movie trailer for its upcoming feature film, “Monsters vs. Aliens,† which comes to theaters in the U.S. on March 27th.

In addition, the timeslot will feature a 60-second 3D SoBe Lifewater commercial marking the return of the ultra-hip SoBe lizards, who made noise during last year’s Super Bowl broadcast with one of the most talked about spots.   DreamWorks Animation’s history-making 3D movie trailer was animated using Intel’s latest, high-performance processing technologies and will be broadcasted along with the SoBe television spot at the end of the second quarter of the game, which airs on NBC on Sunday, February 1, 2009. Viewers will have the opportunity to re-use their glasses for a special 3D episode of NBC’s hit comedy “Chuck,† airing Monday, February 2, 2009 (8-9pm ET.)

Intel has produced over 125 million pairs of 3D glasses, which are being distributed by PepsiCo through the SoBe Lifewater brand.   The glasses will be disseminated via 25,000 SoBe Lifewater retail displays in grocery, drug and other retail venues beginning in early January and will be FREE to consumers.   Should a display’s supply of glasses run out, consumers can call 1-800-646-2904 in order to obtain a pair.

NBC viewers will be alerted to the SoBe Lifewater Super Bowl Displays via a series of tune-in spots airing beginning on January 19th.   Displays and tune-ins will instruct viewers to use their 3D glasses on Super Bowl Sunday, with additional messaging, “Don’t Chuck Your Glasses,† prompting viewers to re-use them during the special 3D episode of “Chuck,† which will feature a special guest appearance by NBC Spo

rts analyst and Super Bowl champion Jerome Bettis.

The 60-second SoBe Lifewater spot, directed by Super Bowl commercial veteran and brand architect Peter Arnell, will mark arguably the first ever Super Bowl ad cross over event – with the SoBe Lizards sharing the screen with characters from the upcoming DreamWorks Animation film that will be showcased in the pod’s preceding spot. The SoBe Lizards and stars from DreamWorks’ “Monsters vs. Aliens” will dance alongside current NFL stars in what promises to be among the most highly-anticipated commercials on Super Sunday.   The spot features a modern interpretation of the famed ballet Swan Lake, and the rhythmic effects when the players and creatures are infused with the refreshing and re-invigorating impact of SoBe Lifewater.

Let me know what you all think of the 3D spot after the Superbowl!

Four Retro Character Posters for ‘Monsters Vs. Aliens’

Alex and the crew over at First Showing got their hands on these nifty looking retro posters featuring four of the characters from ‘Monsters vs. Aliens. Â  Personally, I think this looks much better than ‘Up’. Â  At the end of the year, PIXAR always seem to be the golden boys of animation, but I think DreamWorks may actually give them a decent run for their money this year.

‘Monsters vs. Aliens’ comes out in IMAX 3D and regular theaters on March 27th. Â  Also, don’t forget to get your 3D glasses for the special ‘Monsters vs. Aliens’ commercial that will be run this Sunday during the Super Bowl.

‘Monsters vs. Aliens’ in 3-D during Super Bowl!

Late last week, we got a little heads up via email to be on the lookout for a special announcement on ‘Monsters vs. Aliens’. Â  This info was supposed to have come out today, Sunday. Â  However, as I was watching my Indianapolis Colts get spanked by the San Diego Chargers last night, thanks for the face mask grab, Clint Session, a commercial came up about a special ad that will be run during the Super Bowl.

During the February 1st telecast of the Super Bowl, ‘Monsters vs. Aliens’ will run the first ever 3D trailer on network television. Â  Viewers will be instructed to pick up special glasses at any Sobe or Pepsi display at participating retailers to be able to watch the commercial in 3D.

NBC is also airing a special 3DÂ  episode of “Chuck” later in the month. Â  The ‘Monsters vs. Aliens’ trailer will more than likely re-air then.

New trailer for ‘Monsters vs. Aliens’

Take a gander at the new 2 minute, 27 second  “official” trailer released for the upcoming 3-D animated flick ‘Monsters vs. Aliens’ from DreamWorks… the movie is due out n theaters on March 27, 2009 and features a really great voice cast including Seth Rogen, Reese Witherspoon, Hugh Laurie, Rainn Wilson, Will Arnett, Stephen Colbert, Paul Rudd and Kiefer Sutherland. The movie taps back into the classic 1950’s monster movie mojo and adds some modern flair. The animation is surprisingly improved for DreamWorks and it looks to have a great story.
