THE PROTEGE – Review

So just over the horizon, after clearing a couple of weeks, Labor Day looms over the cinematic landscape. Not only is it a time for heading back to school and cooler temps, but at the multiplex, it ushers in more serious somber fare. So the studios want Summer to go out with a bang, actually several “bangs” with the release of this weekend’s high body count thriller. Sure, we’ve had several action flicks in F9, JUNGLE CRUISE, and BLACK WIDOW, but nothing that’s gotten really, well, messy and R-rated since THE HITMAN’S WIFE’S BODYGUARD a couple of months ago, which followed NOBODY. We haven’t had a visit from that efficient Mr. Wick in a couple of years now. So, in the meantime, how about a “Joan Wick”, a ruthless female super-assassin? Well, this weekend the bullets will be flying, courtesy of the lady known as THE PROTEGE.

Her story begins with a flashback thirty years ago to the bloody backstreets of Vietnam, as an American “free agent” named Moody (Samuel L. Jackson) walks into the aftermath of a bloody shootout and tries to befriend the only survivor, a pre-teen local girl clutching a still-warm pistol. Flash-forward to today, as Moody and the adult lass, now named Anna (Maggie Q) are concluding their latest mission in Bulgaria. They’re mercenaries for hire, but they only take out the “bad ones”. After the job is done they return to London where Anna runs a posh exclusive rare bookstore and Moody “chills” at his country estate while nursing a truly nasty cough (which could do him in, before his rivals get the chance). During his brief birthday celebration, he gives her a new “gig”, locating, “only finding” the now-grown son of a long-deceased business tycoon. The next day, Anna encounters an odd, but attractive book client named Rembrandt (Michael Keaton) who’s more interested in her than the literary rarities. Later that night her world crashes. Heavily armed thugs destroy the shop in an attempt on her life. Returning to Moody’s mansion, Anna sees that he was not as lucky. She vows to complete the job, which will hopefully “smoke out” the culprits. But in exacting her revenge, Anna must return to Vietnam for a most bloody homecoming. As she delves into the mystery, will those shadowy killers finish the “hit”?

The confident Ms. Q seems to be more than up for the task of carrying the lead in a “go-for-broke” energetic action-thriller after working on several TV shows over the years, most notably the lead in the CW series “Nikita”. As she’s eluding the hordes of hitmen, Q shows us how Anna’s mind is racing for the quickest solution to the problem (often an escape route, but more likely brutal retaliation). In between battles, she displays a knack for humor, imbuing much of the dialogue with a fun, off-the-cuff delivery. That’s the case for her exchanges with Jackson’s Moody, the type of role he can effortlessly toss off like a comfy old robe. Saddling him with a frequent cough just seems like a Camille-like affectation to give Moody a bit more urgency and a tragic future outlook. The flick’s real MVP may be the always surprising Keaton, who should be snatching up the grumpy but sweet grandpa’ roles as he hits the big 7-0. Instead, he’s proving his worth as a sexy (the grey hair adds to his rascally charm) action hero. His confident swagger extends both to the big action set-pieces (talk about kitchen calamities) to his playful banter with Q, almost making us forget the huge “age gap”…almost (this after he seems a bit creepy in his bookstore pick-up try). As a bonus, there’s a supporting role for a past terminator Robert Patrick, though he’s doing a crusty ole’ biker version of Bond’s Q “provider’ when he’s not cruisin’ the ‘Nam countryside in a variety of too-tight jean vests.

Speaking of Bond, this flick is helmed (and the marketers feature this prominently in the poster) by 007 vet (2006’s CASINO ROYALE) Martin Campbell, who tries to bring some of that same vitality to the big stunt set-pieces. Unfortunately, his efforts are tripped up by a needlessly complex script and an overall nasty attitude, embracing the R-rating as a way to proclaim how “radical’ and “edgy” it is. The many flashbacks of Moody and teen Anna in Vietnam derail any sort of momentum, while the roster of snarling Euro-kingpins makes little impact with the “big boss’ a near-lifeless “dud”. And though I hate to use the “double G’ combo, I found much of the gore so gratuitous, meant to shock and even titillate (did we knew to see a fountain of blood from the bottom of a poorly sculpted severed head). As with many action-extravaganzas, the film has multiple endings, none very engaging (much like this weekend’s other release). This is worth catching for fans of Keaton (and his career’s amazing ongoing third act), but the filmmakers don’t know what to do with the bullet-ridden banter between him and Q, actually dodging any real dramatic consummation. This is a “last gasp of Summer” throwaway potboiler that may distract and engage the adrenaline “junkies” but most audiences won’t recall THE PROTEGE by the Fall. Nice locales though (who knew Bulgaria could double for Southeast Asia).

THE FOREIGNER – Review

Jackie Chan and Pierce Brosnan face off in action thriller THE FOREIGNER. Director Martin Campbell (CASINO ROYALE, GOLDENEYE) helms this suspenseful thriller that has a serious, emotional Chan bent on revenge after his daughter is killed in a politically motivated bombing in London, a man who turns his focused on an Irish-born British official, played by Pierce Brosnan, who may know the names of the bombers.

Although there is a daughter and Jackie Chan’s character does have an unexpected “special skill set,” that is about all this smart, gripping thriller has in common with Liam Neeson’s TAKEN apart from the genre. This revenge-driven action thriller has some surprising twists and provocative commentary on assumptions based on appearance. The face-off between these two men with complicated pasts makes this more than a revenge movie, as well as one of the best Jackie Chan movies of recent years.

However, Jackie Chan (who is also one of the film’s producers) sheds his usual comic persona to play Quan, an unassuming businessman, running a small London Chinese carry-out restaurant and raising his teen-aged daughter alone. His teen-aged daughter Fan (Katie Leung) is picking up her prom dress from a shop when she is caught in a terrorist bombing of a nearby bank. A group calling itself the Real IRA claims credit but the authorities are baffled over who the group is. Heartbroken, Quan daily quizzes the police and other authorities about the bombing, seeking names of the suspects. Eventually, his focus falls on Irishman Liam Hennessy (Pierce Brosnan), a British official representing Northern Ireland. Now a wealthy, respected politician, Hennessy has past links to the IRA, so the British government turns to him in investigating whether the terrorists have links to the actual IRA, who have been quiet since the Irish “Troubles” ended nearly 20 years earlier, and, if not, who they actually are.

Even though Quan is a British citizen who has lived in London for decades, he retains some ways of his native China. The modest man politely bows and formally addresses the officials but he is relentless in his quest, even offering money for information. Quan seems bent and old as he quietly pads into the police office every day. It is easy to see why the police dismiss him, but he will not go away.

With his “foreign” demeanor, the police soon call him the “Chinaman,” although even they wince a little while saying it. The film is based on a novel called “The Chinaman.”Ironically, neither Quan nor Hennessy, the Irishman he confronts played by Brosnan, are native Englishman, making them both “foreigners.” They also share hidden pasts.

Chan and Brosnan are both terrific in this thought-provoking action film. Sporting a thick Irish accent, Brosnan alternating between arrogance and cunning as the Irish political leader. Brosnan’s character is under pressure from several sides, including the British government desperate to block a return of the Irish Troubles and its violence, and his fellow Irishman with their own concerns. Hennessy’s personal life is as complicated as his political one, while Chan’s Quan has a single focus.

Jackie Chan delivers a different kind of performance for him. Dropping his usual manic comic character, everything about Quan is still, sad and quiet. He unabashedly and quietly sheds tears as the police question him as a witness to the bombing, in one particularly moving scene. Chan’s tear-streaked face is so filled with sorrow in that emotional scene, and several others later, it is easy to see why the police are both touched and dismissive of the 60-year-old Quan when he persists with his questions about the suspects. But by the time the mourning father tracks the investigation to the Irish leader, Chan’s Quan is more hardened, and ready for action mode.

The Jackie Chan action sequences are thrilling – of course – but are also done with a touch of realism. Chan plays up Quan’s age, which makes his explosion into action all the more thrilling. Quan’s adversaries repeatedly refer to him as “that old man,” and are startled when he flies into action. While Chan’s Quan has amazing skills and speed, he also groans like an old guy after falling down stairs, gets covered in scratches and bruises, and gingerly tends his wounds.

The story plays with themes of modern terrorism, past conflicts and hidden personal pasts in an unexpectedly intelligent way for an action film. Director Marin Campbell is in top form here, with the right balance of cat-and-mouse suspense and thrilling action sequences. The pace builds steadily and the film never sags yet allows enough time to reflect on these two characters, alike and different. Past experience come back to haunt or help, and sometimes both. The emotional arc of both characters makes this a more interesting film than a standard actioner.

All told, THE FOREIGNER is a splendid, polished action thriller with brain and heart, and a marvelous pairing of two actors, Chan and Brosnan. For Chan fans, it is a wonderful, welcome return of the great Jackie Chan to English-speaking live-action roles.

CG Suit in GREEN LANTERN’s Future

Work on the Martin Campbell-directed GREEN LANTERN is well underway, as production began earlier in the month in New Orleans.  With that comes set visits, and, with that, comes news that Warner Brothers couldn’t keep under their hat for very long.  /Film is reporting the famed, green suit Ryan Reynolds’ Hal Jordan will be donning won’t be practical, but computer generated.

According to what /Film was told, Reynolds is wearing a motion capture suit on set and the suit we see in the finished film will be almost entirely made out of 1s and 0s.  The CG suit will be designed by Ngila Dickson who worked costume design for LORD OF THE RINGS, THE LAST SAMURAI, and for a little TV show called “Xena: Warrior Princess.”  Take from that what you will.

Evidently, there are those who are making comparisons to Reynolds on set to how Billy Crudup looked on the set of WATCHMEN, though don’t expect Reynold’s suit in the finished film to be as revealing as that of Dr. Manhattan’s.  Warner Brothers is claiming the finished version of the suit will look cool, but that isn’t really saying much, a studio claiming something in one of their upcoming, tent pole movies is going to look cool.  They’d be stupid to claim otherwise.

I’m sure we’ll be able to tell just how cool this all turns out when the film’s trailer begin to hit, but we’ll know for sure once GREEN LANTERN hits theaters in June of 2011.

Review: EDGE OF DARKNESS

Based on the engrossing 1985 BBC TV series of the same name, EDGE OF DARKNESS opens with Mel Gibson, as Boston Homicide Detective Thomas Craven, meeting his daughter, Emma (Bojana Novakovic), who’s come home for a surprise visit, at the train station. However, once home she begins mysteriously vomiting blood and, as the two race out into the pouring rain to the hospital, Emma is violently shot by a ski-masked gunman. She subsequently dies in her father’s arms and the murder is considered some kind of retaliation for Craven’s past police work. It’s only after she’s dead, that Craven becomes inconsolable upon discovering his daughter’s secret life as an activist and that her death was really a political assassination stemming from a corporate cover-up and government complicity. Here is where director Martin Campbell’s thriller of revenge begins.

During his investigation, Craven meets Emma’s former employer, Jack Bennett, played to the hilt by Danny Houston (a slithering opposite to his director-father, John Huston). As head honcho of  the nuclear facility,  Northmoor, Bennett builds dirty bombs for our government so that they in turn can use them to frame foreign enemies as the culprits. It’s for this reason that he callously snuffs out anyone, or any activist, who comes close to exposing his lucrative business. Huston’s overly dramatic nuances throughout the film exudes a menacing evil and it effectively permeates his every word and movement.

Craven is helped by the mysterious operative, Darius Jedburgh, played by Ray Winstone. It’s his occupation to tie up all loose ends for the sinister Northmoor company, including the murder of Craven’s daughter. Jedburgh has his own code of ethics, morals, and logic, perverse though they may be. Thanks to the script by screenwriters William Monahan (THE DEPARTED) and Andrew Bovell, Winstone’s various conversations with Gibson throughout the film are intense and riveting. Shame there wasn’t more of him in the film, as I for one could have used a few more portions of the  always fascinating Winstone. On a side note, Ray Winstone took over for Robert De Niro when he abruptly left “Edge of Darkness,” after it began shooting in Massachusetts on Aug. 18. De Niro just arrived on the set in early September and bailed due to “creative differences.” I wonder how Jedburgh’s character would have turned out with DeNiro’s interpretation of the role.

For a glimpse of another film where Huston and Winstone appeared together, it’ll be worth your while to have a look at the bloody Australian import, THE PROPOSITION.

For two hours, Director Martin Campbell (CASINO ROYALE, THE MASK OF ZORRO) uses a combination of black suburbans, nefarious hit men, and corrupt politicians to show that everyone is suspect, and no one is innocent, in Craven’s eyes. Each new situation or person Craven encounters is so searing that it  just about  leads to an embolism in his head at every turn.  The impassioned quest for his daughter’s killers is such that he even brutally beats the leader of Emma’s activist group, Nightflower, to a pulp. While extracting the much need information on how she was involved with their group, he wryly asks him to remove his glasses. It’s only when he comforts a terrified friend of Emma’s, who comes to him with an explanation,  that  Craven lets his guard down only once to become a father figure of sorts  again. It’ll be very interesting to see what  Campbell does with next summer’s adaptation of DC Comics’ superhero THE GREEN LANTERN.

No matter his past personal problems, EDGE OF DARKNESS proves that Mel Gibson is still a big movie star. His performance as the guilt-ridden father, complete with flashbacks, is compelling and heart-wrenching. Last time we saw him was eight years ago as the bereaved widow, ex-minister in M. Night Shyamalan’s SIGNS. Despite the long absence, the 54 yr old Oscar winner still has what it takes to unleash a fiery rage upon those who have wronged him, while bringing the audience along for the vengeful, Mad Max-like drive. As long as the ever-handsome Gibson is back on the silver screen, I’ll take one of those tickets to ride.

Rated R for strong bloody violence  and language. From Warner Bros. Pictures, EDGE OF DARKNESS is in theatres now.
