COMRADES: ALMOST A LOVE STORY Screening at Webster University Thursday September 5th

Peter Chan’s COMRADES: ALMOST A LOVE STORY (1996) Screening at Webster University Thursday September 5th at Webster University’s Moore Auditorium (470 East Lockwood). The Film starts at 7pm. There will be a post-film discussion by Dr. Yongzhen (Joy) Shu Curtin, adjunct lecturer on Chinese cinema and culture studies at Washington University. The film is sponsored by the Confucius Institute at Webster University . A Facebook invite can be found HERE

Cantopop star-turned-actor Leon Lai (Fallen Angels) stars as a cute but helpless bumpkin from Mainland China trying to get accustomed to his new life in Hong Kong in Comrades: Almost a Love Story. As the title suggests, Lai’s Li Xiao-jun quickly falls in with the helpful and acclimated Li Qiao (Maggie Cheung, of Police Story and In the Mood for Love), who is remarkably good at the hustle of day-to-day life in Hong Kong. Featuring a supporting turn by the legendary cinematographer Christopher Doyle (in a rare acting role, here seemingly playing some version of himself) and a strong sense of place in Hong Kong between the 1985 Joint Declaration signing and the 1997 handover, Comrades is ripe for (re)discovery by an American audience.

In Cantonese with English subtitles.

Admission is:

$7 for the general public
$6 for seniors, Webster alumni and students from other schools
$5 for Webster University staff and faculty

Free for Webster students with proper I.D.

Sam Jackson Finally Becomes a ‘Basterd’

You knew it was only a matter of time before this news broke. Â  In fact, I’m shocked it took this long to come to fruition. Â  It seems Samuel L. Jackson has signed on for a part in his good buddy Quentin Tarantino’s WWII flick ‘Inglourious Basterds’ (still have to take my time with the spelling there).

We reported back in September that Jackson wanted a part so bad, he called Tarantino to try to work it out. Â  Well now, according to The Playlist, Jackson has landed a part, but not of the Frenchman he wanted before. Â  Instead, he will be the narrator of the film who will pop up from time to time throughout the film to add background information.

The Playlist also mentions that Maggie Cheung has signed up for the part of a French matron of a Cinematheque. Â  Yes, she’s Chinese, but, evidently, she speaks fluent French. Â  A Chinese woman living in WWII era France wouldn’t be the weirdest thing Tarantino has ever devised.
