Review: MACHETE

“Machete don’t text.”

Danny Trejo is Machete, a former Federal agent who’s organization completely betrayed him. Their leader Torrez (Steven Seagal), killed his family and left him to die. Machete isn’t going out that easily. He resurfaces as a Mexican laborer just as a revolution is brewing. The local senator (Robert DeNiro) and his gang of renegade bandits (Lead by Don Johnson) are trying to stop immigration by any means necessary. This includes investigating a local taco stand that they believe to be the headquarters for an immigration ring, lead by Luz (Michelle Rodriguez). Machete is now being hunted and targeted by the bad guys, while being encouraged to fight for his people. Mix all of this together and you are in for one hell of a ride.

Let’s just start out by giving props to Danny Trejo. He is one of the most recognized character actors in the world and he certainly deserves his time in the limelight. I can not think of any other actor that could have played the role of Machete better than he did. The movie itself was a perfect Grindhouse movie. It was funny, some of the effects and lines were purposely bad or cheesy, and there were boobs. THERE WERE LINDSAY LOHAN BOOBS. Some speculate that she used a body double… but there is one scene that you can clearly see things through her hair. I guess the naked shots were there to cover her bad acting. I still can’t decide if her acting was bad because it was suppose to be, or if she’s just lost her touch. Either way, she fit her role in the film.

Michelle Rodriguez is always spot on. I honestly can’t think of one role where I didn’t like her. (Even if the movie itself was horrible.) She is perfect as Luz, as well as her alter ego ‘SHE’. Rodriguez a vulnerable side, a sexy side, and a side that says “I don’t care who you are, I can kick you ass.” Jessica Alba, on the other hand, is iffy to me. Sometimes she really shines in a role, and sometimes she is just plain horrible. I felt that she was just okay in this one. Her wig was HORRIBLE, and some of her dialog didn’t really flow. Yet again, not sure if it was suppose to be that bad or not. Still, I didn’t hate her in the role. DeNiro can certainly play the part of a redneck well. I think one of my favorite casting decisions was marketing Don Johnson as ” And Introducing Don Johnson”. It was clever, and pretty darn funny. Seagal was purposely left for last. I don’t get him. I don’t get his voice, I don’t get his stupid hair, and I certainly don’t get his wacky wardrobe… but all of those things combined made him perfect for this film. Jeff Fahey was way better in this than his role as the pilot in Lost. Hmm… two actors in this movie were in Lost. I like it!

Mr. Rodriguez… you are a genius! I could go into a long description of why you rock, but there are just so many that I will leave it at a HIGH FIVE! (Air slap!)

GO SEE THIS MOVIE! This isn’t my opinion… YOU NEED TO GO SEE IT! If you don’t, you will make a puppy cry. Do you want that on your conscious?

Sony Catches a ‘Machete’

machete

Sony sure knows not to mess with the wrong Mexican.  It was announced by The Hollywood Reporter that Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group has acquired most of the international rights to Robert Rodriguez’s ‘Grindhouse’ expansion film, ‘Machete.’

The company most recently had a hit with Neill Blomkamp’s ‘District 9,’ for which the company handled distribution in Italy, Russia and South Korea.  The company also handled most of the international distribution for Duncan Jones’ sci-fier, ‘Moon.’

While ‘Machete’ is still shooting in Austin, don’t be surprised if a release date gets set sometime soon.

Insane ‘Machete’ Cast List Confirmed

machete

It was an unconfirmed rumor a few weeks back, but it appears a lot of the rumblings behind some of the casting on ‘Machete’ has been confirmed.   In an article on Variety today by Mike Fleming about Overnight Productions, it was revealed that not only would Robert De Niro be joining Danny Trejo in the film, but Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, Steven Seagal, Lindsay Lohan, Cheech Marin, Don Johnson and Jeff Fahey would also be playing supporting roles.

This answers a few questions people were asking when De Niro’s name came up previously.   Primarily, if Fahey is returning, De Niro will not be playing Senator McLaughlin, unless, of course, Fahey has stepped aside to fill another role.   A few of these names like Lohan and Rodriguez were also pretty much confirmed already.   However, Seagal and Johnson have totally come out of nowhere.   I cannot wait to see what role Robert Rodriguez has Seagal filling.   This could be his chance at finally playing the villain.

One name peculiar by his absence is Jonah Hill, who was also rumored to be playing a character in the film.

‘Machete’ is currently in production and is set for release sometime in 2010.   With names like De Niro and Alba on board, the chances of it going straight to DVD have thinned, so look for this one in your theaters.

Lindsay Lohan Confirms Role in ‘Machete’

After a long stint out of acting, having been, well… “recovering”… she has now confirmed signing on for a role in Robert Rodriguez’s new film MACHETE. Rodriguez recently told MTV that he has “a cool part in the movie for her — if she takes it.” The casting news allegedly came from Lohan herself via Twitter.

Assuming this news is 100% legit, Lohan would be joining Danny Trejo along with a rumored cast that includes Robert De Niro, Jonah Hill, Michelle Rodriguez, Steven Seagal and Tom Savini. MACHETE is an extension of the fake trailer that played with GRINDHOUSE and is being co-directed by Robert Rodriguez and Ethan Maniquis.

Jonah Hill hasn’t signed on for ‘Machete’… yet

jonahhillmachete

Frosty from Collider got to sit down with Jonah HIll and talk about whether or not he has signed on for Robert Rodriguez’s ‘Machete’ and we get this:

Collider: Are you doing “Machete”?

Jonah: I haven’t read it yet. I love Robert Rodriguez. He called me today. He called me and said I’d like you to be in “Machete” and sent me the script and I have to read it tonight. So that was a little premature on their part to release that. But I’m definitely considering it. I have to literally read the script to decide whether I’m going to do it or not.

So has hasn’t signed on for the movie yet, but there is a change that he will since he is reading the script. I have a feeling he will provide the comic relief how Steve Buscemi did for ‘Desperado’ if he does sign on for the film.

Unconfirmed: Robert De Niro in ‘Machete’

robert de niro

There isn’t enough salt in the world to take this news with, but here it goes anyway.  Bloody Disgusting is reporting from an anonymous tipper that Robert Rodriguez’s upcoming ‘Machete’ film will feature not one, not two, but a whole slew of A-listers.  Leading this pack is none other than Jake La Motta himself, Robert De Niro. Danny Trejo Updates from CineVegas: No ‘Expendables’ and ‘Machete’ Shoot Date Set

machete

Our good buddy, James, over at Gordon and the Whale got their hands on some exclusive pieces of information out of Mr. Danny Trejo.   First off, Trejo is not, I repeat, NOT in the Sylvester Stallone-directed actioner ‘The Expendables.’   There were rumors going around that he was, and, with any dispute, it had begun getting referenced around the net as fact.

According to Trejo, his name was associated with the film for some reason.   However, he was never contacted by Stallone or anyone associated with ‘The Expendables’ about the film.

Also in speaking with Trejo, James asked the man about ‘Machete,’ the feature film adaptation of Robert Rodriguez’s fake trailer for ‘Grindhouse.’   Evidently, filming begins on ‘Machete’ in five weeks.   Trejo had just spoken with Rodriguez the day before, and the shooting date for ‘Machete’ is set.   This puts to end rumors and speculation on what Robert Rodiguez’s next film is going to be.

So, to recap, no ‘Expendables’ for Danny Trejo, but ‘Machete’ is set to begin shooting in a little over a month.
